HISTORY OF THE SHETLAND PONY

Also known as "Scotland's Little Giant", the Shetland pony is the oldest of known breeds. Experts agree this breed to originate from Scotland (Shetland Islands) and are believed to trace back to the origins of other small ponies found in other countries like Ireland and Wales.
Because of the climate and rough conditions of the islands, these small ponies adapted to survive bitter cold weather, rocky and steep hills and poor grazing lands. This is believed why the Shetland has a thick neck, short ears, heavy mane and strong hooves.
The demand for this small pony did not have a great demand until 1847 when The Mines Act was enacted prohibiting children to work in coal mines. Children had been used to pull coal tubs through the narrow and cramped mines which were too small for an adult to maneuver. After The Mines Act, Shetland ponies became a hot commodity for the jobs previously held by children.
This hearty pony is known for its long life cycle, sturdy footing, stamina and excellent eyesight. It can carry up to half of its body weight on its back for long distances. These favorable characteristics made the Shetland popular for carrying peat on the islands as well as pulling coal carts in the mines. These ponies known as "pit ponies" were mainly used for coal mines until the introduction of the Miniature horse.

Question of the day: Would you be open to the idea of getting another horse if it was well trained, or are you content with the horse/horses that you already have?

For now the horses that I have keep me pretty busy, but in a couple years I might look into buying another horse ( if my mom and dad let me).

Thank you so much for all your support!
