orientation here in the houston area at major hospitals is like being back in college! i worked at md anderson and memorial hermann hospitals many years ago and their orientation is 4 weeks. now i'm working at a university teaching hospital so there is much to know. for example, on week ends mostly the medical residents cover, not the attendings. they toldis of an incident where a diabetic pts blood sugar was 410 and the RN kept calling the resident and he gave orders for regular insulin and recheck in an hour. after 3 hours the bs was still 410 so he ordered 30 units. neither the nurse or the resident recalled that reg insulin takes 3 hours to take effect. the pt nearly died from 60 units! i haven't had much med/surg so that nurse could easily be me. i don't want to kill anyone. also, we have all kinds of emergency and disaster protocols. we're a major triage center for psych patients in case of hurricane or major accidents. lots of stupid stuff like that to learn and be tested on. i'm studying now for a medication test on monday.
