on helmet awareness day google/search Courtney king dye and her story, also Jessica jahiel's true helmet stories online. you can't believe how easy it is to have a life altering injury just from being around horses. as a nurse I've cared for patients who are paralyzed or on life support from bicycle, trampoline, gymnastic and diving injuries. a helmet can prevent sometimes. it's totally worth it to your horse, your family and to you!
a good exercise to work on stride adjustability and control is to set up two ground poles 72 ft apart. first practice getting an even 5 strides at canter, between the 2 poles. when he's doing that calmly, try to shorten his stride and get 6 strides in between the 2 poles. once you 've done that a few times then try lengthening and getting 4 strides every time. try it and see how challenging it is.
