Good Morning, well the visit from the nutritionist was to say the least overwhelming. I'm still reeling from all the information. He was pretty impressed with her overall condition. Says, he has definitely seen a lot worse. The initial exam showed that she is a bit dehydrated, not bad, but he says with these older horses hydration is so important, often if they are better hydrated they will eat better. I always feed loose salt, he wants me to up that a bit. His main thing was, that hay cubes are going to be her saviour if we can trick her into eating them, he says start real small, like a couple at a time into her regular ration, I always soak her ration, them two or three then three or four and pretty soon, she is eating them and doesn't even know it. He also said she is 30 and she will call the shots, we won't fight her, she will eat what she wants. He wants to keep her on her complete senior, just more of it, he added some roughage and fibre in the form of pellets adjusted her vitamin mineral supplement, we are not going to beet pulp just yet, he thinks she will get enough fibre with what we are using right now, he said finer hay might help, too bad I already have my hay put in and it is quite coarse. He said sometimes with these older ones, they just won't eat the hay no matter what you offer. He also said, don't laugh, he does this with his racing TB's, water temp is very important, studies have shown that horses prefer their water between 40 and 65 degrees, he actually carries a little thermometer and checks his horses water. His suggestion was add hot water to her bucket, if you put your hand in and it feel like the bath, that is good, if you put your hand in and you want to take it right out, it's too cold. So, last night from supper on til bedtime I gave her warm water, guess what? She drank MORE. So, I am encouraged, hope you're not sick of hearing all this, I'll keep you posted, we left a vote, have a great day, Love Donna Lee
