so good to hear from you! were your ears "burning" today? joey and I had lunch and were talking about HC friends. she is the only friend from HC that I've been able to meet personally. I mentioned that I hadn't seen any blogs from you lately and I wondered how you were. so many people come and go on HC. it's nice when we have those we can network with and learn from. I truly believe we can learn from everyone. some of these kids have given me some great ideas. there's a great group of older experienced horsewomen who can share experiences and advice.
when I began riding again in my 40's, I headed on the show track because that was all I'd ever known. after about a year and 4 horse shows that broke the bank, I reconsidered my goals. now I just enjoy my horses on many different levels. much of the time i'm walking and trotting only. you are right that we tend to slow down. I work on square halts, neck stretches (bring their nose around to touch my boot toe), walking forward, trotting slow, then extended, etc. one of my son's teachers became interested in riding with me. she also had quit riding for 20 years and was my age. she took some lessons, then that worked into helping me teach lessons and finally finding her a horse. she credits me with giving her horses back again because she was of the mindset that you rode 5 times a week, WTC and jump, or it didn't really count. she was quite obese and just couldn't do it. with me, she rode when she could and if it was only a 15 minute walk, it still was fun. now she and her husband retired and bought a big horse barn in tyler. anyway, the point of it is that ANY time in the saddle is good. :)
