December 24th Christmas Eve Newsletter

***HOTD Joey 266079
Here is the story of Joey
Joey is a 14.3hh Navaho Pony weighing in around 900lbs. He turned 47 this year. His white spots are only due to his age. Joey was one of the first rescue’s at DreamCatchers Equine rescue. He came to DCER in December of 2007.

Joey’s last owner acquired him at age 22. She sent him to Flying AH Horse Rescue at age 40 to retire in the summer of 2007. It’s unfortunate but they neglected him and he was seized by DreamCatchers Equine Rescue. He had been eating dog food off the back porch at Flying AH to survive. He was thin, his feet were overgrown, and he only had 3 teeth.

DreamCatchers put him on a mash diet immediately which he still eats and thrives on today. He gets his hooves trimmed three times a year because ‘that is how he likes it’. He is very relatable to a grumpy old man in an old folks home with his ‘I don’t want to’ attitude. Joey ‘rules’ the old fart barn with an iron squeal and tossing of his butt from side to side (he cannot buck or kick).

He loves his belly scratched. He is the third one to be let out of his stall daily and you must scratch his belly or he won’t let you get back to work letting the others out. He is also the last one to go into his stall at night and you better have his food in there!!

In late Dec 2010, early Jan 2011 there was a virus going around the rescue that killed two other horses. Joey got it too. He stopped eating but kept drinking as if he just knew how to heal himself and survive. He was tube fed day in and day out. Joey never lays down so when he did, the thought that this was the end was inevitable. Everyone said their goodbyes to this amazing horse that night and made him as comfortable as they could. The very next morning, he was all better!! He had to be lifted back to his feet with a tractor but he was fine!!

If we could capture the way Julie’s face lights up when she talks about Joey it would bring tears to your eyes. She always says she would love to know what he’s seen in his lifetime. Please stop by and leave a vote for a very special horse.
