Today's Ride
Today my fifteen year old brother and I headed out into the winds of Kansas to ride and enjoy the warming weather. We rode west on one of the many dirt roads that stretch for miles. We were having a great time until, about 80 yards from a train track, my brother says, "Was that a train whistle?" I turned and looked down that track and yes, there was a train, and it was close! Now, neither of our girls have ever been that close to a train before. Dolly began to prance around, Cutter eyes were frightened. We turn and rode further away, but had to stop soon to get them back under control. I was trying to stay calm and reassure Dolly who (wouldn't you know) was the one getting the most upset. Singing usually calms both me and the horses, so I began to hum, 'Rock of Ages'. Cutter then stood still, yet Dolly still was side-stepping and throwing her head, but humming helped me relax some. Thankfully, the train wasn't a long one and it wasn't going fast. Soon enough the train was gone, and Dolly settled back down. The ride back was fun, and we had a great story to tell the others when we got home! :D
