A VERY BAD DAY....
OMG, yesterday was such a bad day. I turned them out on grass early about 6:30 right after their breakfast. All was well, I looked outside about 8:30, Charlie was just FRANTIC, he was wild and totally lathered, he was running wildly in the pasture, I went to get him, David helped, I got him in his stall. He was drenched from head to toe, and could not settle. Just circling in his stall. So an immediate call to Dr. Cook. He told me to give a small dose of tranquilizer, it would take about 20 minutes to work, report in an hour, that helped to settle him but he was still agitated, he would take a bite of hay, then circle, he was wearing a path in his stall. Even tho he was not showing classic symptoms of colic, we gave some anti gas meds, waited an hour, a bit calmer, but still off, then we gave a dose of ompeprezole(ulcer med) turned him back out, but even outside, he would take a bite of grass, then walk around, take bite and walk around, just not relaxed. Finally we gave 10cc's banamine and within 15 minutes he was grazing peacefully, looking like another horse.... I have said this before, our Canadian weather is hard on horses, this week has been particularly bad, cool nights, hot days, and Tstorms with lots of humidity. Dr. Cook said they had several gas colic calls this week. What thru him off was Charlie did not look like typical colic. I was instructed one small flake of wet hay overnight, and update in the morning, David checked him at about 10PM, he looked quiet, but he had eaten some. I went out at 5AM. He had 4 nice poops, and he ate every bite of his hay and was ready for his breakfast bucket. I love that horse, I love Dr. Cook. We left a vote, have a great day, Love Donna Lee
