Hey, that's okay that you haven't written in awhile. That's how I am a lot of the time too. I just get so busy.

Happy belated birthday to Bomber! Five is a perfect age. Pippin is 4.5. Riding bareback is fun and not only can you feel him better but he can feel you too. You can give subtler aids. So, how did the backing up go?

Thanks for mentioning Melian. She is doing pretty well in training for a 6 month old. If you want to get your dogs used to Bomber you might try tying them up in a field while you ride there. I did that for several weeks with Melian and Eddie and Prince before letting her fun off leash. Fortunately, the horses were already used to their own dogs.

I had a very exciting evening on Saturday. I drove Pippin across the highway and up the mountains for a bit. Melian ran alongside and somehow Sven (our little maltipoo) managed to wheedle his way into the deal too. So he rode in my lap and ran a little bit of the way. Once we were far enough from the highway I let Melian off the leash. Pippin was trotting away and she was running all over the place. It's one of Pippin's favourite places to go.

Melian was tempted to chase a car but I was very stern and she was good and listened to m. Then a Forestry truck drove by and Melian didn't chase it but guess who did? Pippin! He got so excited and started cantering up the hill after it. I let him because he was having fun and wasn't in too much earnest. The sun was setting and was shining in our eyes and the dust from the dirt road rose in a big cloud after the truck. Soon the dust cloud was completely illuminated by the sun so that it was completely bright and white. Pippin looked into it and had an expression on his face that said, "Where did they go?!" It was kind of funny. Melian looked a little confused. Perhaps they vanished into the mist. And Sven just looked cute.

When we turned around I picked up Sven and clicked at Pippin to run. He started galloping really fast down the mountain and Melian was running alongside. Then she stopped to sniff something and Pippin went on ahead. Melian realized that she wanted to catch up so she took off again and Pippin heard her coming. I thought he was going at full speed but suddenly, upon seeing Melian coming like a lightning bolt, he went into supersonic high gear and shot off at warp speed. But Melian was still faster and overtook Pippin. Despite going at warp speed with Pippin Melian just looked like a blur as she passed us. I guess she's faster than Pippin now. I estimate at least 30mph because the highest I've clocked Pippin is at 24mph and that night he was definitely faster than that. Sven just sat in my lap and wasn't worried by the speed at all.

We had to come to a quick stop though because one of the traces came off the cart. This is the part of the harness that actually pulls the cart. So, I slowed Pippin and then stopped him and reattached the harness. I guess it's not built for high speeds. And then we were off again. I
