Dear Pony
This right, bright pony
Eyes wild, coat tawny
Outwitting people is his game
Disaster is his proper name
Kicks the groom who brings him hay
Breaks his rope and wheels away
Jumps the fence, won't come to me
Avoids all capture skillfully
Ears back, expression mean
Stubbornness I've ever seen
And if he's caught he's not contrite
Turn your back and he will bite
When I saddle him, why then
Kicks my stirrup, bites again
And always bucks on mornings cool
Dumps me so I look a fool
But he, upon the roughest trail
Is skilled where other horses fail
Over Fences, leaping logs
Past the meanest baking dogs
Through the thick and tangled wood
Crossing rivers’ widest ford
Along thin Ridges skillfully
Dodging chuckholes carefully
Then he’s safe and sure and right
Every challenge, his delight
I want no other, meeker made
Not for any price would trade
Crazy mane and swinging rear
Sassy, spoiled and very dear
Eyes sharp, coat tawny
He’s my right, bright pony!
