continuing the story of tailor: after the problems at the ditch jump, his trainer and rider decided to work on the specific jump at home. they went back to getting him confident over the ditch and the liverpool (a stadium jump with "fake water" beneath it) in familiar surroundings. his next outing was an olympic qualifier. if he had a good showing there they would make the team.
i wanted to share with you that i had a problem at sing's first show. she was working well at home but just like WE get excited when we arrive at the show or fairgrounds, with all the sights and smells associated with the activities, so do our horses. she took a 6 stride hunter combination in 3 strides while we were warming up! that means her stride was about 21 ft, almost like she was back at the race track! i borrowed a twisted wire snaffle and was able to slow and shorten her stride and got it in the correct (and safe!) six strides during the show. some horse's are more sensitive than others. she responded well and i never had to use it again. once the horse understands to slow down to pressure, rather than run through it, their trainiing advances. tailor was SUPER sensitive and stopped, rather than slowed to the pressure. i see using a stronger bit as no more cruel than putting braces on kids legs or teeth to improve their quality of life. after patiently working with a training device the horse should learn the proper response and then you no longer need it. it's like moving from first grade to second. many horses even freak or hurt when first saddled. it just takes proper conditioning to adjust them to it so they become a safe riding horse.Come visit me, Sing & Herd.
