Feels like winter is back in Ontario. We left chilly, windy votes for all.
The next stage of Sterl May story could go on and on, I'm just going to give you the highlights. Even tho we live in the country, we had no place to keep her, so I gathered my thoughts and started to look for somewhere she could call home. I did have some criteria, like it needed to be safe, preferably with some kind of companion, Sterl has never been alone, it needed to be close enough that I could get there daily to feed etc. my work day starts early and I did not want to be driving all over the country side before work every day. I put the word out every where, I asked neighbors, I literally started knocking on doors. It was not looking good, until finally someone told me about an old abandoned barn not far from where we lived. There was an old shack of a house on the property that was rented to a young man that farmed with his family, he kept the house as a place to get away from work and be alone. But the barn and pasture had been let go for about 15 years. I took a look at it and at first rejected the whole idea, way too much work involved. But after David and one of my brothers hacked their way through the overgrowth around the barn door, they said "this could work". I used my imagination, the barn had water and electric, it had a pasture. about 5 acres, it needed fencing, but I saw in my mind a safe peaceful home for my girl. I located the owners, I told them my story. It was like it was meant to be. These people owned this property and had planned that one day when they retire, they would build on this land, they where huge animal lovers and where touched by my dedication to Sterl May. They said "if you think that place will work for you, you are welcome to it" the only restriction was, if something goes wrong we don't want to hear about it, I was responsible for the clean up and fencing, and I had to get along with Robert, the tenant in the little house. Hi, left a vote. Well Amber didn't come home yesterday, change of plans. She came home this afternoon! It was very cold and very wet here today. I let her run around the arena for a bit, then took her to her stall with the turnout. As soon as the halter came off, out she went. She must have stayed out in the rain for half an hour. She did finally come in and ate. I took some pics of her home coming today and posted them. She settled in pretty quick!

GOOD MORNING, We left you all a vote. Now that I had an answer although, not the answer I wanted, I have to admit that I did fall apart, there were lots of tears. Reaction varied at the barn, most were understanding and sympathetic but remember the lady that said I needed to "hit her harder", well she said "I don't know what you're crying about, you just sell her and get something else, it's not like you raised from a baby" I have never believed that animals were disposable, and I promised Sterl a home until the day she died. But, reality set in David said that I could not continue to pay board to go 4x a week to simply pat her, there was the wear and tear on the vehicle and the gas for all the travelling back and forth, for what, I can't ride her. I needed to THINK. bringing her home was not an option, we had no land or barn. I didn't know what to do, YET, but I knew I WAS NOT GETTING RID OF HER. Talk soon, Love Donna Lee & STERLY GIRLY

Hi Katie, here's a vote for ya. Hope that the vet makes it out this week. Was he on horse sugeries? Or is he also a small animal vet? Got a ride in on Paige today. She was very good, and considering that about 30 minutes into our ride and training session, it started to thunder really bad. I stayed with riding till after the third really big blast of rolling thunder, then decided I didn't need to test the footing and see if the landing area was soft or not. Paige never did offer to spook, but I wasn't about to take that chance. I got off and cooled her down doing showmanship work, cause it was pouring outside and I didn't want to get soak-n-wet and get my saddle wet either. It lasted about half an hour. Farrier coming back in a little while to do Indy and Bullseye tonight. He ran out of time the other night, he was late getting here and it was like 9 pm when he finished with Paige.Marion and the blondies.

Here's a vote from Buddy! Hopefully your vet appointment doesn't get pushed back again! Working again today, hopefully it's nothing like last night, and thankfully I'm not closing tonight. I also got my music festival ticket I worked hard for. I had to promote the festival and sell 10 tickets to get mine for free. Still trying to find a better job that pays good. Maybe even a stable that would allow me to work off board for Buddy, still have to get caught up on bills first tho :( Wishing you a good week!

Thanks for the concern about Sally. She is doing much better today. She went in to have a tooth removed and reacted to the anesthesia. Her face and throat swelled causinng severe breathing problems. She is on steriods and the swelling is now gone. She is sitting here watching me type:)

Here is an early morning vote for you, STERL MAY and I appreciate all the wonderful support, thank you.

Dr. Cook went to the University Hospital to go over Sterl's case with her Drs, he then came to us to explain the diagnosis in detail. This type of condition is sometimes seem in very high end dressage horses, because they are held in such tight collection for long periods, enormous stress is placed on the spine, it is sometimes caused from something like a fall eg. a horse flips over in cross ties, or an accident in a trailer, that type of thing, also studies have shown that pacing Standardbreds are more susceptible because of the diagonal motion of the legs during pacing, BINGO, STERL IS PACER BRED. Regardless of how it happened the outcome is the same. Sometimes with rest and time the bones will actually fuse, therefore no more rubbing of bone on bone and so no pain.
The bottom line was Sterl's riding days were over. Dr. Cook suggested that I give her a year off and try her again, in the meantime, she will learn to accommodate herself, she won't do anything that hurts, I now had a pet....see you tomorrow, Love DONNA LEE & STERLY GIRLY

Hi, left a vote. I posted a couple of pics from yesterday of Amber. She had been in her stall without any turnout for 4 days! I turned her loose in the arena yesterday, and of course she ran around and rolled a lot! I stayed in the arena with her the entire time, just stood in the middle of it. I just let her be a horse, just running around and snorting, rolling, that kind of stuff. She finally relaxed about 20 to 25 minutes in the arena. I then walked up to her, and gave her some love and talked to her. I then walked off, she came with me, no lead rope, just her walking next to me. When I stopped, she stopped. There were two poles set up at the other end of the arena. She didn't go near those poles when she was running around. So, of course, I am going to try to get her down to those poles. So, since she is walking with me, I start heading towards one of those poles. We would walk a little bit, then stop, then walk, then stop, kind of thing. All was going well, we were half way there, when we both could hear the horses outside running! She looked at me, I said "go on, go see what is up", she took three steps to the side and away from me, and then she took off running. She checked it out, and then came back to me. Then I started heading to the pole. We did it! Got her to walk up to the pole, she sniffed it, and then just stood there with me. It was great! I also paid her off yesterday, and she will be coming home tomorrow evening! Can hardly wait!

GOOD MORNING, please drop by Charlie's page, I posted a picture of his foot, 2 weeks shy of 10 months, lookin' good...We left votes for everyone too, thank you

You guys are really good, a couple of you asked about her saddle fit, before we even got Dr. Cook involved, we had a saddle fitter take a look, he was satisfied that we had a good fit, on palpation of her spine she showed no tenderness. So here we are at the Hospital, the referral was made and Dr. Cook had sent a history and asked for xrays. I have to say the day was very long, but incredibly interesting, I was warned ahead of time that this is a teaching Hospital,so this would not be a quick in and out visit. Sterl was assigned Dr's in charge of her case and then there were what seemed like a million students at varying levels all hovering around my girl. Every square inch of her was gone over, and a million questions were asked. How nice to spend a whole day talking about your horse and everyone HAS to listen. They told me they would gather all their info and a report would be sent to Dr. Cook. They did absolutely everything except watch me ride her. When they lounged her, she actually moved pretty good, I think it was adrenaline 'cause this was exciting for her too, in the end her assigned Dr's said they saw NO need to xray her spine. Those of you that know me,even a little know that I am non assertive, but, be proud of me, I became like a Mamma bear with her cubs, I said "do you know Dr. Cook? he sent us here for xrays, do you have any idea how hard it was to get here today? we are not leaving without xrays" So, they took our xrays, she needed some sedation because these needed to be very accurate, we waited until the films were ready, they were brought to a large viewing screen and all the Dr's and students that had been with us all day were gathered for the reading. Fancy and I enjoyed a cloudy evening! We were overdue for this show practice and time just hanging out. Fancy did not fret for Trigger one bit, even though Trigger screamed murder every time we got out of his sight. We are expecting rains and clouds all week. But the weekend may be nice. We will try to practice a little each day. It was so much fun! And today was the first day Fancy was ridden since her heel injury. She was great. Like she never missed a beat. I am glad I did not rush her.

GOOD MORNING, LEFT A THANK YOU VOTE, So, let's get right to it. On routine exam all her vitals where good, she, of course appeared healthy, she had regular vacs, wormings and her teeth were good. We drew blood for a complete work up, all neg, with nothing obvious we started the slow process of ruling out, one by one the possibilities. I mean slow because in order to not get confused we needed to give each treatment time to test effects, does that make sense?? Being a Mare, almost 15 and never bred, we wanted to rule out ovary issues first, I was happy and relived when the physical exam and the internal ultrasound was negative, we then went at the simple stuff like corrective shoeing, we tried a course of Regumate and a series of Prostoglandn injection, we tested for neurological issues, we looked at eye issues, double checked teeth and throat, there was no obvious tenderness in her back muscles, however she lounged better than under saddle. Thru all the testing, which took weeks, I still rode her and acted like everything was fine. When Dr. Cook was satisfied that we had ruled out EVERYTHING, he said he needed some very accurate xrays of her spine, he needed us to go to the Equine Hospital in Guelph. He called to make her appointment and I asked Val(our coach) to trailer us up there, and on Jan 15/98 in one of the worst snow storms ever off we went. TO BE CONTINUED. I planned on working with Fancy today, but the rains came in. She has shed her winter duds and she is slick and shinny. I guess I will get new photos after she has a bath. Trigger is slick and shinny too.
Mother's day the neighborhood kids came to visit Fancy and Trigger. The children gave them treats and pulled grass. Trigger is still quite aloof. I wonder if anyone ever gave him treats before we got him. He acts like they just rode him hard and put him up wet. Once you catch him, he is so sweet though.

i got to meet the wonderful joey and her sister nancy. they came for about an hour while i had lessons going so we kinda visited around the activity. had a parent take a few quick pics. i posted one of joey & me with sing, then joey and nancy with peach. it was so good to have my first meet up!

♥♡♥ Yep, grey skies changed my plans yesterday morning! I did spring cleaning till nearly 12:00! I ate lunch, and then brushed Deacon and Rocket-fly sprayed and turned them out. I got Whiskey next and bathed him! He looked so pretty...after that I was tired, plum pooped!! So I relaxed and watched them graze. It will be a few days before I can ride around my home area due to the rains!

GOOD MORNING, LEFT VOTES FOR ALL, TO THANK YOU FOR YOURS. This is where Sterly's story takes a bit of a twist. FF almost 4 years, we are still at the boarding barn, Sonya is now in University, I still ride 4x a week. I started to notice a slight hesitation from Sterl that was new, she did not want to go forward, at first it was mild, and I could push her thru it, but it got worse. She would actually do a small buck and a very tiny rear when I asked for forward. This was so out of character for her, but ever her resistance was polite, like she was trying to get my attention, she did. Believe me when I say there were lots of suggestion from folks that observed us, most thought that it was behavior and that I was not strong enough and I was letting her get away with it, one woman told me I had to beat her hard enough to make a welt on her skin, that would smarten her up!!!. I chose to call Dr. Cook, I explained the situation and we made arrangements for him to come and see her, I asked if it could be "just" behavior, he said "whenever a horse that was happy with its work begins to resist, they are trying to tell you something is wrong", in the meantime carry on as normal, act like everything is fine TO BE CONTINUED, Talk soon, love Donna Lee & STERLY GIRLY

Hi Katie, here's a vote for ya. Hope that all went well with spring shots and teeth floating. Hope that they don't get the sore necks that mine do! Had an awesome ride on Paige today. I even put a neck rope on her and gave the reins a lot of slack, like I don't ride that way anyhow! The grabbed the neck rope and worked her. She did well, not perfect, but good. Got a little faster at the lope and jog than what she's trained to do, but I didn't put a lot of leg on her either, I know Karen would have her going better like that. But I'll work on it once a week. Had them out this afternoon in the warm sun. Mowed another pasture, now I can't start all over again tomorrow with the lawn and follow with the pastures! LOL! Marion and the blondies.

i rode sing and worked on "finding a distance" for a jump by cantering over a pole and counting down from 3 strides out, "3-2-1 JUMP" i've never been very good at finding distances and helping my horse over tricky courses. this will improve my riding skills so i can help out more, not just be a passenger. peekaboo moved from 406 to 415lbs on the weight tape! yay!
i have the farrier for trims next week, then the vet for annual shots and floats the week after. love to get it all behind us. sing was reshod last week. she's my only one with shoes on front. she gets stone bruises without them. have a great week end!

GOOD MORNING MY FRIENDS,I would like to continue with Sterl May's story, thanks for reading them and commenting on them, because she is 30 and retired, it is also fun for me to remember the early years. THANKS FOR THE VOTES AND SUPPORT. All was well at the barn, Sterly's retraining was in full swing, I still leased Fool Kat, so I was a pretty busy girl, 2 horses to ride 4x a week and the barn was 40 minutes from home, a full time job, a house and husband to take care of plus 4 cats and a dog(Nicky) that I did agility with. The young couple that owned Fool Kat were pregnant and building a new house, they had no time for her but, did not want to let her go. So I was a perfect solution for them. Unfortunately, the baby arrived and the house was ready and they were ready to take her home. I had leased her for almost 2 years, I had Sterly but still it was a sad good by. Fool Kat was 23 when I started her lease, I kept in touch after they moved her home, she was basically a pet, she died quietly at 32. TALK SOON, LOVE DONNA LEE AND STERLY GIRLY

Had some Sadie time today. We both need it everyday. It's getting hot here, so I didn't ride. I put the halter on her and walked her off the property. She was a little nervous, so we took it slow, stopping when she needed to to look around and see that she was okay. Neighborhood dogs were barking at us. She walked a little fast on the way back to the house. Had to keep stopping her to slow her down. She loved it. Going to walk her more often to get her use going off the property. Going to work up to riding her. Last time I rode her off the property, she was nervous and wanted to fight me. She should trust me more now. Hugs and a vote.

GOOD MORNING, here it is day 16 already. WE LEFT A VOTE FOR YOU, and a big thanks for the wonderful support. Being a pretty new horse owner, I had sort of thought once I get the first year under my belt, I'd be good to go....Silly me, aren't we ALWAYS learning from them. One thing is for sure, if all horses were like STERL MAY, everyone would have a horse. By now she is pretty much the "sweetheart" of the barn. The owners loved her 'cause she was easy to handle, never caused a fuss and I was there regularly(every chance I had). One morning, Sterl was in the aisle cross ties, I was grooming her and Margaret was touring a new prospective boarder, they got to us and Margaret says "this is Sterl May, she is Standardbred, this horse jumps" as they walked past, I heard the guy say "nice butt!!!" HEY,he was talking about the horse. LOVE DONNA LEE & STERLY GIRLY

Went out to check on Sadie when I got home from work last night. She'd torn her fly mask off. It lasted 10 days. Hope to someday move away from the egg ranch. The flies are horrible. Temperatures are now in the triple digits, too. Sending love and leaving a vote.
