if he's been checked by the vet and is getting tons of feed, it doesn't make sense that he's losing weight. good luck and i hope you find a solution that works! it can be frustrating playing detective trying to find out what's wrong. Come visit me, Sing & Herd.

be careful with the feed changes! horse's can colic and die from sudden changes and overfeeding concentrates like sweet feed or pellets. are his teeth in good condition? they need to be floated at least once a year. he may have trouble chewing if not. all horse's move better one way than the other. he may be stiffer to the one side. you should be sure you work both ways and warm up by walking and suppling first. i'd talk to your vet about the feeding problem. there's certain calcium ratios that have to be right with alfalfa. don't start throwing feed at him to try to put his weight back on fast! could make him sick.Come visit me, Sing & Herd.

hi
is he sore or sour? it's hard to tell from far away but here's what i think of when i hear a horse doesn't want to go forward and pins his ears back....he's not liking his job. if he's hurting, then you have to fix it. did you check him over by probing and squeezing along his chest, shoulders back, legs, etc? if he's not sore for a reason then maybe he doesn't like leaving his barn buddies, he's bored or scared of the routine, or fill in the blank of many possibilities. i have a haflinger, peach, who tends to get like that. after years of training her (remember i may only work with her once a week so everything takes really long) we finally came to an understanding. i think she's got some stiffness in her back end but not bad enough to keep her from going when it suits her. i had to use a whip on her BIG TIME in order to get her to go forward to my leg cue. i always give her a chance....squeeze leg, cluck, then if she's not moving forward, pop with the whip. let's just say i had to do alot of that until suddenly she partnered up with me and seemed to say, "you're pretty clear what you want and fair with me so let's do it". some horses i would never use a whip on, because i can usually cluck and maybe slap behind the saddle with my hand and that's plenty for them to get on with it. they all have different personalities. buttercup never needs any encouragement since she's a speed demon. i only give one pop at a time....but if the horse ignores it, i continue giving a pop until they go. peach is the only one i've had to do this with but she does exactly what you describe with some riders. she's gotten better. now she pretty much just walks if they're not a strong rider and won't trot. doesn't pin the ears or look unhappy. this is a big blog cause i'm trying to cover alot. however, i don't have much to go on. if your horse is bored or barn sour that's another story.Come visit me, Sing & Herd.

well, it's natural to look at pics and think they're the owner, unless you read my page and learn that she's a lesson pony. i took those pics down so it won't mislead people. i just put them up cause magan, the rider, did so well in the show and i thought she might want to see her pic on there. :) she comes on HC sometimes.Come visit me, Sing & Herd.

i'm an adult and the pics of peekaboo are with my student rider :). hope you'll check out some of peek's videos. you can see this little girl riding her over the past year and she went through a big growth spurt just this summer. she is too big for her now at age 10. if you're a well balanced rider you can ride smaller ponies though. it's the dead weight slouchers that put all their weight in the seat rather than sit up tall and displace the weight into the stirrup and heel that are hard for smaller horses to carry! thanks for the vote! lots of circling will help GB learn to carry himself in balance and slow down at the canter, too. as he develops muscle he will fill out over the hips. hope this is helpful.Come visit me, Sing & Herd.
