About Me

Active within 1871 Days

I am from Rogers, TX and I've been a Club Horse member for 7 years, 8 months and 14 days

Nicknames: Blazin' Georgia Star, Baby Girl

Age: 8 years old

Gender: Mare

Breed: Paint Horse

Height:

Color: Bay tobiano

Type of Riding: Right now I am working on ground work with the help of my mom and little sister, since she is not of riding age yet. But when she is ready it will be lots of pleasure/trail riding.

My Horse's Achievements: I am so proud of Blaze's progress with her groundwork. When I got her, she was not even halter broke and had very little contact with humans. One her 2nd birthday, I saddled her up and got on her while my mom lead us around the yard. She never kick or bucked!!! Two months later, I got on her again, this time we added a trot and she still was calm!! I am so proud of her.

My Horse's Favorite Treat: She has not developed one yet, but she likes her hay over her grain.

My Horse's Favorite Things To Do: Right now, eat and hang out with the other horses. Oh! She loves her ears scratched too.

Pet Peeves: Blaze does not like to be messed with while eating, but we'll work on that.

My Horse's motto: Let the star shine on!

How We Met

On April 22, 2005, I acqired a young filly as my first horse, who I named Smart "Georgia" Star. Less than 7 months later, Georgia had to be put down due to West Nile. I was so heart broken. She had accomplished so much with her groundwork and was turning out to be such a good, sweet, curious horse. The day I picked up Georgia at the breeders, I met her dam, Cookie, who had her second foal on her, who was Georgia's sister out of the same sire. Although I wanted to have her after Georgia passed, it was a suprise graduation gift to have Blaze as my own--to continue Georgia's legacy. Hence, Blazin' Georgia Star because the star still shines strong. Blaze has not replaced Georgia, but instead will never let me forget her. STAY TUNED FOR NEW BLOGS ON BLAZE'S PROGRESS AND UPDATES!.

I can't believe it's been a year!
Wow! It has been over a year since I have left a blog updating Blaze's progress. We have still not finished our fence, so she still is staying with my parent's :( I have ridden her with a snaffle bit once with the help of my little sister on her horse, Beau. Blaze was very confused, but would follow Beau. She never offered to buck, but did take off once and when I relieved the pressure from her mouth, she slowed down. Of course she did not understand my cues to turn, but when she would start going the wrong way, my little sister would make Beau force her the other way! Awesome job!! Beau is an old ranch horse, so he was just doing his job!! I am scared to get on Blaze again because I feel like I just got lucky that she didn't buck me off!! On the other hand, she has always handled what ever we throw at her well. I have Clint Anderson's Downunder Horsemanship training book and am going to start following it from the basic groudwork up so I am sure not to get too ahead of myself. Otherwise I will be guaranteed to get bucked off if I don't teach her to respect me and my space, desensitize and sensitize, etc. His book is called "Establishing Respect and Control for English and Wester Riders", and I highly recommend it. Each exercise gives you: list of tools needed, goal, Why do it?, teaching steps w/ illustrations, common handler mistakes, common horse mistakes, troubleshooting and tips for success. Alot of time was spent making this book and it was well worth the $25 I paid for it.

Proud owners!!!
I just wanted to share with everyone that my husband and I just purchased 10 acres of land! We are in the process of buying a manufactured home to put on it and once we get some fencing up, Blaze will be able to live with US instead of with my parents. This means I will get to spend more time with her and prepare her for a trainer. She will be 2 years old in 3.5 months, so she is getting closer to being able to train her to ride.

Too Tight!
Blaze finally moved up a halter size from yearling to small. Well, it has been tight for a while, but we were finally able to switch when I brought up a new lead rope to my mom at Thanksgiving. I had to buy a new lead rope because the old one's clip is broke and cannot be removed from the smaller halter....not that it really needs to be removed. We do not keep halters on our horses while in the pasture, so there is really no need to remove the lead rope, but just in case it would be nice to be able to.

West Nile booter time
Blaze is due for her 1st 6-month West Nile booster this month. Is everyone out there vaccinating against west nile? Don't let your horse end up like my last one.....DEAD! Please vaccinate your horses. I pay between $20 and $25 for each vaccination which is not bad and well worth it. Check with your local veterinarian to see how often you should administer boosters in your area. There is also a new vaccination that is given once a year, I believe, too.

MY HORSE USED TO BE LIKE THAT. I PUT A LEAD ROPE ON HIM, AND PATTED HIM AS I APPROACHED HIM. IF HE RESPONDS SHARPLY, SAY NO AND TAP HER ON THE NOSE. BLOG ME AND TELL ME IF IT WORKS.

PLEASE HELP, I need ya'lls advice!
My husband and I are in the process of buying a house and land pending the sale of our current home. Blaze has been used to being with other horses since she was born, but especially since we got her last December. She currently has 4 other horse friends and 2 goat friends. All the horses do not hang out together all of the time. They are essentially 2 herds consisting of Blaze, a mare and a blind male that was gelded late in life, the other being two "old men" who are geldings. If all goes well and we actually buy this property, Blaze will be moving with us and away from her friends. I am afraid of how she is going to react. She is just about 17 months old. I considered bringing one of the horses with us just for a while, but we can't bring the blind horse with us because he pretty much knows the layout of the 15 acres he is on plus he gets help to manuver from the mare. It probably would not be a good idea to bring the mare not only because of the blind horse, but because she can be a pain to handle. And then there are the 2 "old men". Both are easy to handle, but neither really cares for Blaze. Does anyone have any suggestions on how I can transition her to the change without having to buy another horse (I am not opposed to getting a goat though)? Thanks for your help!

Saddle me up! Round 2.
I put a blanket and saddle on Blaze again on July 7th. I did not give her as much time to check it out and smell it this time. I just let her smell it briefly and then put it on her and immediately started cinching her up. As expected, she did great!! And this is after about a month or longer of not being caught. There has been so much rain this year that the grass in the pasture is more than enough, so my mom has not had to catch the horses up to feed them. I gave her a moment with the saddle cinched up and them untied her and lead her around the yard and trotted with her. She did so great!!! Stay tuned for more updates on her groundwork. And please blog me if you have any tips, but remember, she is only 15 months old.

I'm so proud!!!
Blaze turned a year old on April 19th. On May 12th, my mom and I put a blanket and saddle on her for the first time. We started out by putting the blanket and saddle on the ground next to her where she was tied up so she could sniff it while I was grooming her. We then put the blanket on and gave it a few minutes. She just stood there and would look back at it. Then we put the saddle on her (youth saddle) without cinching it up and left it on her for a few minutes. Once again, she just stood there. Then my mom, attached the girth strap and cinched her up tight enough to hold the saddle on....and she just stood there. I then lead her around the yard and she was actually ready before I was. She did so great walking, so then I trotted her....and she trotted without kicking or bucking!!!!! I was so proud of her. When I went to take it off, she did step away from me once, but that was it, she never threw a fit!!!!! I couldn't ask for anything better.

She is so pretty!I don't think Blaze will meet the same fate as my horse Sachem, the horse I lost, I think it was just a fluke and there was no way to stop it,but think of it this way if I never lost Sachem then I never would have resuced Patches,it is the same with you if Georgia hadn't passed away then Blaze might not of come in to your life. I hope you and Blaze have many happy years together:)

Come visit me, Calli, Patches SOLD, judgement, Kate, Cookie & Sachem i miss you.

There's a first time for everything!
So Blaze is coming up on 11 months old. She had her hooves trimmed for the first time on 3/3 and both my mom and the farrier were very impressed in her behavior! She pulled away a little when the rasp first hit her foot because it was a new feeling, but other than that, she did great! I am such a proud mom!!!!! Tomorrow, 3/6, she gets her first West Nile shot and her rabies. This will be only her second time of traveling in a trailer. Wish her luck, well, wish my mom luck, she is the one who is going to have to deal with her!!!

It's playtime! (or downtime?)
I wanted to tell ya'll how silly Blaze is. My mom called me up today to tell me Blaze fell. It's not what you think or what I thought. She's fine. Lately, she has been very playful with the other horses AND my mom, but my mom won't have anything of it. I wonder why! My mom let Blaze back into the pasture after eating, then my lil' sister's horse, Beau. She then proceeded to catch my dad's mare, Lucy, (they were all enjoying the green grass in the yard) and she decided to be difficult and sparked a little spunk into Blaze. Blaze came charging toward the pig pen from the interior of the pasture and then attempted to make a sharp right on a left lead. Down she went, her feet came right out from under her, then slid about 5 feet on her side! She only lost some of her winter fur on her shoulder and hip, maybe bruised a little, but she is not limping!!! After she got up, my mom said she curled her lips like "that hurt" and then began to trot away kicking up. Amazing! Hopefully, she learned her lesson!

Snow in Texas!!!
Check out the new photo I added of Blaze. It snowed at my parent's house where she is. This will probably be one of the few times she will experience snow since it does not snow very often. Isn't she so beautiful in the snow? I think so, but I'm kind of biased!!!!!!!!
