Thanks for listening to my stories of Sterl May, I guess by now you can see just how special she is to us. The trail ride was bad, but there were tons of great stuff that happened at "the barn" One morning I had just finished my ride and we jumped a few little jumps. I had turned Sterl loose in the arena to roll. As I waited for her, one of the other boarders came in with a friend. She introduced me and said her friend just came for the visit to watch her ride. I told them I was almost done, I'd be out of the way in a few minutes. I couldn't help notice that the friend was REALLY looking at Sterly, of course I thought because she is sooooo beautiful. As I got ready to leave the arena, I called "come on Sterl May, let's go" the friend says, "what did you call her? Is she a Standardbred?" "she said, I'm K. V. this horse was born on my Dad's farm, OMG, wait till I tell Dad that I saw her, she looks great, do you jump her? he will be so happy to hear that she is alive and well", we both cried a few happy tears, what a small world, what a great horse. After that day, I made sure that I let Mr. V know every year or so that Sterly was indeed alive and well. PLEASE VOTE STERL MAY JUNE HOTM
Thanking you all with a vote today. We were really enjoying life together at the barn. I love having the guys home but I have always missed the camaraderie of other riders support. Sterly was now jumping small courses, mostly xrails but also some verticals. We had advanced to the outdoor ring. One evening, late spring I was at the barn and had just started my warm up when a couple of the other riders came in and said "we are going on a trail ride, want to join us" We had not done that yet, so I thought OK, sounds fun.....WRONG...Sterl May thought there was something spooky behind every tree, bush, rock, everything was a monster. She just could not settle, so I could not settle. The other riders are like, she'll be fine come on. So I hang in, we struggle along, Sterl on high alert, snorting all the way. Just then we see ahead of us in the field a dozen or so cows and everyone is like HEE HAW, LETS GET 'EM. I'm like, NO. STERL JUST FREAKED...they all took off, left us there, me scared to death, Sterl just dancing and prancing. So I did what any chicken would do, I got off and we walked back to the barn. I was just fuming, nice friends, don't ever ask me to go on your stupid trail ride again, everyone had a big laugh on us, it was all soon forgotten, but we never went on another trail ride again. PLEASE VOTE STERL MAY JUNE HOTM
GOOD MORNING ALL, LEFT YOU A VOTE. Today's story is my personal favorite, here it is. Lessons were going well, we were becoming quite comfortable with one another, she loved her trot poles and her friend Doolie. She was learning to flex and bend but our canter was pretty rough. Sterl would anticipate my asking and she would throw herself into it off her front, not pretty. Our instructor said if we start her on some small jumps it will help her learn to use her hind end. Sterl was already a bit of a "wonder horse" around the barn. Lots of the other riders would chuckle "you can't ride a Standardbred" We practiced our two point, our release on the flat then, when we were ready we planned to jump next lesson. Word spread thru the barn like wildfire "she is going to jump that horse, Standardbred's can't jump" So, here we are next lesson, Val has a couple of TINY xrails set up, Sonya and Doolie were there, I was as nervous as can be. We do our warm up, get sort of relaxed, just then I notice that quite a crowd has gathered at the rail. They are all there to see a Standardbred jump. I trot around the arena, line up, get in two point, get ready for my release,PANIC..I turn my head to the right and CLOSE MY EYES... when I opened them we were on the other side of the jump, STERLY DID IT, Standardbred's can jump. GOOD MORNING, we left you a vote, thanks so much for yours. Happy Mothers Day.
Things were settling into a routine, my work schedule allowed me to be at the barn T,F,S,S, because I worked a 12 hour shift on M,T,W. Our lessons were going well, Sterl was an excellent student, she took easily to things like trot poles (Charlie still HATES trot poles) every time I was with her I was so proud, every one thinks their horse is the best looking. Sterly had only been at the barn a couple of weeks, she was turned out in a small paddock along side the road. When I got to the barn that morning, Max told me someone had come by and wondered if that Mare was for sale. We have a large number of AMISH farmers in our area, at first I was taken back. So, now Sterl May is safely at the boarding barn, life is good. I HAVE MY OWN HORSE, I had to tell you all about Sonya because I never would have made it thru the training and frustration without her. It did not take long to see that Sterly knew NOTHING about being ridden, she had had someone on her back a handful of times, but trained she wasn't. She had no bend, no flexibility, she had no idea what aids were, her head was straight up and out, when she was confused which was often, she paced. That was her comfort zone. But, none of that mattered to me, she was mine, we would learn together. As lucky as I was to have Sonya, Sterly was lucky to have Doolie(Sonya's horse) his stall was across the aisle from her. And of course, when I rode, especially at first Sonya was always there. Sterly had this huge crush on Doolie and once in the arena, she would follow him anywhere. I kept Fool Kat for those times when nothing went right and I just wanted to ride and noT really work SO HARD at it. We started lessons with Sonya's coach, in the beginning it wasn't pretty, but like I said, we were both learning together. FANCY'S PERCEPTIONS: “A mother understands what a child does not say” (unknown)
Are you finally enjoying spring? We went out of town last night to help a friend. It was soo late when we returned I had to call it a night. Fancy is ready for fun. She lets me know she wants an outing by neighing to me when I go outside for any reason. I tried to get some help taking the cart out, but no help just yet. I am giving my mom flowers for Mother's Day, perennials that will come back for her to enjoy. She seemed to be happy about that. I am tired of being still and I am ready to get creative. LOL.

LEFT A VOTE, THANKS FOR YOURS
Before I tell you more about STERLY and our adventures, I need to tell you a bit about the young rider that suggested her to me. I met her at the boarding barn which was primarily WESTERN, Sonya was the only English rider there. Sometimes after one of my lessons I would just hang around and watch her ride. I wanted to ride like that, SONYA often came to the barn when no one else was around. So, I started planning my trips when I knew she would be there. I would tack up my leased horse, Fool Kat in my borrowed tack, I didn't have any of my own stuff yet. I would ride up beside her, her horse Doolie was a huge TB, and I'd say "Hi" she would look down at us and say "Hi" I'd say "are we posting on the correct diagonal?" and she would say "NO" and I'd say "can you help me?" she would, and off I'd go, then I'd ride back up to her and say "are we cantering on the correct lead?" and she would say "NO" she would help me get the lead and off we'd go....I believe that we became friends because I drove the poor girl crazy, I think she finally said "I might as well be friends because she apparently isn't going anywhere". I'm telling you this because this amazing friendship that started all those years ago in that little boarding barn continues today. SONYA was only 16 when we met, I have watched that young lady grow up, finish her education, become a fabulous teacher, get married, and she now has 3 beautiful children, her daughter Kaitlyn is just 4 and has started riding lessons. SONYA was and still is there for me every step of the way with STERLY and every horse that came after. TO BE CONTINUED. has all your mud dried up?
i rode sing for an hour this week but haven't ridden since. got alot going on, like most of you do, too. hoping to ride this evening. doing housework until michael comes this afternoon, most likely to help weed eat and work some more on the drainage at the covered arena gate. peekaboo is not doing well. she's had a cough, which we treated with antibiotics. lost about 50 lbs, which is alot for a pony. she just eats really slowly and only so much. she looks like a bag of bones. :( we've started pergolide. my vet said it should help in 2 weeks if it's going to. she's been on one week. please pray for her.Come visit me, Sing & Herd.

Roxanne loved STERL MAY, after caring for her for the first 4 years of her life, she could not let her go. Sterly spent the next 6 years of her life at Roxanne's friends place, she was not a problem, she had two other horses to play with. It was always Roxy's plan to make Sterl a riding horse, and to be fair she did go out and ride her a few times over the years, but as we all know too well, life gets in the way. Fast forward Roxanne's life, there was a marriage a couple of moves, eventually she and her husband tried to set up a small breeding farm, they wanted to try and make it in the STANDARDBRED business, so they gathered a few mares and they even trained a couple for the track. Sterly came home. It is a tough business and it costs lots of money, money that they were not making, they both were holding down full time jobs as well as trying to make it racing. Long story short, it took about a year to realize they were broke and so liquidate the liabilities keep the assets. Sterly had to go. This is where I come in. At the boarding barn where I leased there was one other English rider, I would plan my trips to the barn when I knew she would be there, she is the one that over heard the conversation about me wanting to get MY OWN HORSE. She told me about Sterly, so I called Roxanne, I went to meet her and with my borrowed saddle and bridle I rode her right there in her paddock. The rest of that day you can read in her profile "how we met" STERLY had just turned 11 when Roxy and I delivered her to the boarding barn, I had my own horse, and she was BEAUTIFUL. FANCY'S PERCEPTIONS: “Always drink upstream from the herd.” (unknown)
Fancy & Trigger had their farrier trip this week. Great news, the farrier said Fancy's heel looks normal and you can't even tell it was wounded! We can begin riding when it is not so muddy in the corral. I am going to ride her for short periods of time before we ride out. I want to be sure both Fancy and I are ready when we ride out. And we can use this time to get ready for the horseshow this month. I want to try our first time at showmanship. ♥

Sterl May was born and raised on a small but successful STANDARDBRED farm not far from my home. Standardbred racing is very big in this part of Ontario. She was quite good at the track, but at 4 years old she got a respiratory virus that ended her racing career. Roxanne, the lady that I eventually bought Sterl's from worked on that farm. Because racing is a business and not a hobby, Sterly had to go. Roxanne remembers the morning she was told to get Sterl May ready for the market truck. Roxanne had known and cared for her for 4 years and could not bear the thought of her going to market, so she bought her on a whim. That night after work she trailered her to a friends house and said "I bought a horse can I keep her here for now" Sterly spent the next 6 years there playing with her two new pasture pals. we would love your support, please
Before I bought Sterl May(read her how we met story please),I used to lease a solid bred paint mare, at a local boarding stable not far from home. Her name was Fool Kat, I leased because as an adult getting back into riding, I wanted to be sure before I bought my own horse. The barn owners thought that I should buy a foal and raise it up. One of the other riders at the barn heard this and she said she knew of someone that had a horse for sale for not too much $$$ she mostly wanted a good home for this horse. The only thing was, she was a STANDARDBRED, that didn't mean anything to me. I went to meet her, and I will never forget the feeling I had when I walked into her paddock, she tuRned to look at me, THOSE EYES, THOSE BEAUTIFUL EYES, she still has those beautiful eyes, thanks for your support, we left a vote too. I can't believe that today is Fancy's 5th birthday, I did not spend special time with her today because it is damp, cold, and windy outside. I did spend a few minutes with her after church. I also
spent time just watching Fancy and Trigger. There is plenty of hay to share, but Fancy was chasing Trigger away from the hay. He would pin his ears to look like he was about to make a deal of it, but he still just ran off.
I think my wrist are improving, but still not 100%. I am still having some weird feelings here and there. Blessed are the pure in heart, they shall see God.
Here is a good night vote from our herd to yours. Hope you have enjoyed this weekend come rain or shine. The rains have set upon us for a few days to come. It feels relaxing, but chilly. I just watched Fancy and Trigger munching hay and while they ate their grain, I stood out in the rains to police Fancy. LOL. To keep Fancy from taking Trigger's grain. When I am in the house, I often look out at the flowers and to keep an eye on Fancy. My small flower garden has come a long way. I am going to bed soon. I am a bit tired.

Hi, I hope things are ok there with Chy.
Saturday vote 4 U! Do enjoy this great weekend :)
We went to the horse show, but we did not take Fancy nor Trigger because I could not clean them up. I helped out in the arena giving out ribbons. That was as much fun as showing. I really learned a lot helping in the arena. I am so excited and hyped up to show!
My darling Fancy Walk N’s heel bulb is all healed up! I just hope she can stay out of trouble now!!!

♡ whinny’s & a click on your horseshoe! I am off work this weekend so I do intend to spend some much needed horse time. I plan to ride after work today and then haul out and ride Saturday. I will ride Sunday around my home area if it doesn’t rain and get things to wet. We will be adding the last 30 “t” post on number 3 turnout as well! Once that is done we can let them graze it and give #1 & #2 turn out a rest. Grass is growing pretty good but not so much that weeds could grow thank goodness! We will have our brush hog delivered next weekend so when stuff gets to grown or to many weeds we can jump on the tractor and take care of it! Here is a fabulous Friday vote, have a great weekend :)
I spoke with the nurse this morning, I am not supposed to be putting any stress on my wrist yet. I thought after the 3rd day I could begin to do things. Our first horse show is this Saturday! Fancy won’t be going. If we can get Trigger cleaned up, we can take him. I wish I could get Fancy ready, but I don’t have anyone to help get her cleaned up really nicely.

today i i had a runny nose and eye so i took a bendryl and went back to bed. had a 17 yr old come out to volunteer around the barn. she was very nice. hope she comes back. i normally don't answer emails from strangers but decided to meet her. she's not very experienced but learns quickly. had her fill water buckets, muck stalls and groom. i rode sing tonight while teaching a lesson. feeling pretty good tonight.
is the water receding?Come visit me, Sing & Herd.

good to hear from you!! i'm busy with a new job where i clock in at the hospital for 40 work week. :/
had to go full time and higher pay to support my "horse habit". princeton and peach are both on previcox and are moving much more comfortably now. i buy the large size dog chewable and cut it in half, then each get 1/4 tablet daily. much cheaper that way if you haven't tried it. love the pic of chy with the chicken riding her.Come visit me, Sing & Herd.

✞ “Meeting of the minds” I posted this picture to honor one of the first responders/EMS Perry Calvin is the brother to “Paige Calvin” who rides with us. Her horse is the 2nd one to the right-May her brother rest in peace…
I have missed my HC family! My thoughts and prayers have and are with my sweet little town of West, Texas…I am sending thoughts and prayers to Boston with the bombing and everything that has gone on in their area. Me and Cliff, our kitties, our dog and of course our beautiful horses are ok physically, now mentally we are very tired and we have a longggg way to go here in our community. The support from around the world is so awesome. To see all people come together as they have here with this disaster is truly amazing. Again thank you to all of you for your support and checking on me and my animal family I love you all! My horses were very confused that night, wide eyed and heads held high as they ran circles and would stop and look toward Cliff in I as if to say “mom, Dad, is everything ok?” then run circles again-stop-look at us-and circle again! They did this nonstop for nearly 20 to 30 minutes. They to saw and felt the explosion so I wonder what really went through their minds….Remember to hold and love your family –including your pet family every day and tell them you love them, you never know what could happen. This disaster has changed my life forever!

☆★☆ Good Sunday morning! Hugs and a vote… 26 MPG winds! 44 degree’s but wind chill is 34. That is cold to us but compared to you folks in northern states it probably sounds warm-lol. I apologize for being a cry baby yesterday! I will get my” tech” stuff taken care of and I have a plan!!!
Yesterday made Deacon & I’s 6th anniversary together! It was cloudy after work but no winds and I did have to wear a jacket but it was pleasant outside so I haltered up each horse one at a time and took them to this spot that is about an 8’ by 12’ area that has a lot of green grass growing. It needed mowed so each horse got 5 minutes to eat! They were in HEAVEN!!!! Then I rode Deacon bareback with just his halter to celebrate our anniversary together. We walked, then trot and I backed him and side passed both directions. I repeated this about 3 times and then he gave me his famous kisses and I hugged him and turned him loose…he is such a smooth ride! Have a great day ♥

We lost our internet connection Tuesday, that is no fun!
I did get up with our vet Tuesday morning. Fancy's heel bulb injury will be slow to heal but it is healing normally :)
