My Horse Profile

Quarter Horse from Port Matilda, PA

Sydney

About Me

Active within 291 Days

I am from Port Matilda, PA and I've been a Club Horse member for 5 years, 6 months and 15 days

Nicknames: He's "Hat Trick" when we show. I usually call him Syd but sometimes we call him Ummsey (it rhymes with "clumsy.")

Age: 18 years old

Gender: Gelding

Breed: Quarter Horse

Height: 15.2 hh

Color: liver chestnut

Type of Riding: Hunter jumping

My Horse's Achievements: When I was in ninth grade, Sydney fractured the splint bone in his right front leg, but I didn't know what the lump was until the vet x-rayed it about two months later. During that time we had been showing in the Pre-Children's divisions and Sydney had already taken home some Championship ribbons. He didn't get noticeably lame until long after the lump appeared, and he never once refused a jump that I pointed him at. He showed me just how much heart he had by trying his hardest even when he was in pain.

My Horse's Favorite Treat: He will eat absolutely anything--frenc- h fries, pretzels, Chex mix, Cheerios (any flavor), potato chips, and Famous Amos chocolate chip cookies! Regular ol' horse treats are good too, along with peppermint and cinnamon candies.

My Horse's Favorite Things To Do: Mostly he likes to eat and stand still. He tries to convince me otherwise but I think he actually does like jumping, too.

Pet Peeves: He hates to be alone in the outdoor ring he starts whinnying and looking around. He also hates it when you stand in front of him without feeding him.

My Horse's motto: Trust takes time to build, but it only takes an instant to destroy it.

How We Met

I was looking for a horse when my trainer found Sydney in an old Quarter Horse magazine and called because he was "price reduced." When I saw his picture I thought he looked ugly. Just goes to show how you can't judge a book by its cover! He was the last horse I tried out before making a purchase, and I have never regretted passing up other horses..

yeah but its been raining alot lately, so thats more of an excuse for us to keep him in the barn. we just dont want to make him get stiff so we're trying to hand walk him as much as possible.

yeah hes actually doing pretty well. we're able to leave him out in a paddock (very small with no other horses of course!) now because hes healing so well and so quickly. but we're still leaving him up mostly just to prevent any other injuries.

yeah it sucks! the vet came to look at him today and get him his anti biotic so it wont get infected. she said we got lucky becuase the nail went in at a slight angle, so it just missed the bone in his fetlock. if it would have been a half a centimeter forward, it would've went straight into the bone and fractured it which pretty much means he wouldnt be able to jump again! so i geuss we're pretty lucky! (ha ha, his name does have some truth to it!)

ha ha, theres really not that many horse colleges out there though, so its kind of an obvious choice for me at least! plus it helps that both my parents and my sister went there, so its kinda in the family! lol, i'm soooo mad at myself right now though! When i was riding Lucky yesterday, his shoe was just a little loose, but it never stopped us from riding before, so i rode him anyway. so we were having a fabulous lesson, but we were airborne over a 3'3 oxer, and he landed hard and his shoe slid back off of his hoof and the nail jammed into his fetlock. so hes lame and probably will be for the next couple months! Its nothing major, but we have to deal with infections and healing correctly and all. so this leaves me to ride Abercrombie until hes better. which is not always a good thing. i mean shes fabulous, but i always rode lucky after i rode Abercrombie just to chill, because thats something she does not know how to do! lol

yeah my mom's practically got it all figured out for me! she's gonna stop competing (though i really wish she wouldnt!) and just start riding Abercrombie when she gets better, but only jumping her like 3 ft. so when i go to college in 4 years, (which i'm going to Meredith Manor) i'll be able to take Abercrombie w/me. i wish i could take Lucky since hes like my favorite horse in the world, but considering i'll probably be jumping higher than 3'9 (or at least 3'9 by then) then i'll need a horse that can jump bigger! and whats the use in buying a new horse, when i have one sitting right here that has the whole package!

thats good! yeah sometimes eq. is the only place where you'll do really good! which sucks, but at least you did good in that! I have a wonderful feeling about the show.....i rode Abercrombie yesterday, and we did 4 perfect hunter courses!! so i dont think we're going to do jumpers now since shes doing so well with hunters, but i geuss we'll make up our mind there! i'm so jealous of my sister though, ugh, ok go to Abercrombies page, and scroll down to the very bottom were all the pictures are, and look at the last few pictures of the black stallion! Shes been riding him, and there going to the Charlotte Jumper Classic on May 23, she gets to show against some of the top junior riders in the country (shes 18) and she gets to be trained by Beezie Madden all of May leading up to the jumper classic! i'm jealous, but not to jealous, because hopefully i'll be up there were she is one day!

yeah its a little bit scary! but trust me, when it happens all the time, you get used to it! lol. I'm so excited, i talked my mom into letting me show Abercrombie next weekend! we're showing in Junior Amateur jumpers (we figured that we might as well take advantage of her ginormous stride and very zippy turns lol) and then i'll show Lucky in childrens (ugh i cant wait to move up! 2'9 gets old after a while!) so it'll be a pretty hectic weekend, how did you do at the show?

oh i hate using double reins, we used to have to have them for Lucky b/c he was very heavy and always pulled me down. i would always drop one or sometimes even both! but i geuss it takes some getting used to! and it was so hilarious, yesterday i was giving Lucky the day off, and i rode Abercrombie. It was the first time i rode her in 3 days b/c of rain. and she was wild! she would never buck or anything when shes hyper but her stride can easily cut off a horse stride in a regular hunter course! so we went down this line w/ 3'6 jumps, and not only did she leave out 2 strides in the line (there was no way in the world i could've gotten her to shorten her stride) but she left literally a stride early so it felt like we were in the air for 5 minutes! lol, but i was laughing the whole time! lol

yeah hes pretty amazing! lol, but i'm always trying to ride other horses though b/c Lucky is such a cadillac i dont want to get used to having the point and jump kind of horse. cause my sister had this horse who was alot like lucky, and he pampered her (much like lucky pampers me!) and she had to get a new horse, and this new horse was a 6 y/o very green horse. and she would constantly get off crying, b/c she was so used to the easy ride w/ her horse, that she didnt really know how to demand a horse and be bossy! so i ride Abercrombie alot to keep me in shape (she'll do that for you!) and to make me a better rider! and yeah those mikmar bits are amazing!! We use one with Abercrombie cause she's got such a massive stride and she builds so easily that we cant hold her back for hunters when she gets excited so we'd be chopping off at least 2 strides to a regular horse stride! lol

He was a very spastic horse! lol, if he wasnt bucking, he was galloping a million miles an hour! or refusing jumps, or trying to ram me into the fence! My mom has this homemade bridle (literally, its homemade) we call it the war bridle. we sometimes have to use it with Abercrombie but thats about it. but i swear when i had matt we used it practically ever day. Its a regular leather bridle w/a double nosestrap, and it has this wire that runs through bit, and up the sides of the horses face and it puts pressure on the horse major, just to let them know that if they do anything wrong i'll pull on it and it wont be to comfortable. sometimes she'll change the noseband out so it will have a slight pressure builder on it if the horse is really bad, but at first when she told me to use it on matt i flipped out! I thought it would like hurt him bad, but all it does is put double or triple the pressure of a regular bridle on them. it works to! lol

well if he just has to pee he'll buck. but if we just ignore it and he really has to go, he'll start bucking AND refusing jumps! lol, and i always ride him in a full chick myler bit. Hes pretty heavy in the mouth, especially in the eq. when he has to frame up! he'll do it, but its not any fun for me! lol, I remember with my old horse Matt, we had to ride him in a extremely harsh Uxeter Kimberwick gag bit. he winced every time he saw it! but it wasnt our fault he had to wear it. lol

yeah the only time he'll pitch a fit is if hes really tired (which isnt often) or he has to pee! lol, it was hilarious, when we first got him the people who had him before us were practically obsessed w/ him! So they sent us a whole book on his antics and everything. the very first page it told us, that after every hack at a horse show we would have to take Lucky back to his stall, loosen his girth, and walk away so he could pee. well we kinda blew that off, and the first show he was awful! then we realized that it was all because he had to pee! so hes an extra wierd little horse, but i geuss all horses have there ticks

I show year round! lol, we carry many quarter sheets and rugs w/us though to wrap lucky up in outside the ring, plus i load up with under armour underneath my show clothes. but with my old horse, well He was awful to show in he winter. He was a Thoroughbred and i'm sure you know they dont take well to cold weather, so he would have random outbursts of bucking bronco fits! so i really never showed to much with him in the winter. but Lucky is pretty much the cadillac of show jumping, lol, he loves to show, he loves to win, and he loves to just flat out be ridden! lol

ooohh, that doesnt sound good! but now we're like so timid about what kind of shoes we get on Lucky, b/c he doesnt have that great of hooves (he loses shoes like that!) so now we have to get aluminum shoes w/out the tabs on the front (thats the reason it ripped the wall off his hoof) and we have to get him shoes ever 4 weeks instead of 6. so hes a pretty expensive little horse, but hes worth it! I remember one time, I was riding Abercrombie, and out of stupidity i had gotten 2 lawn chairs, and put a poll in between them, and the stupid chair jump was a 3'6 oxer. well her foot caught between the 2 polls, and both chairs flipped, and Abercrombie fell. We thought she had fractured her shoulder bone, but thankfully she just bruised it!! I was so mad at myself b/c she is a national show horse, so if anything happened to her over that accident, it would be on me forever! (plus it didnt help that my mom didnt know about it until after! it was just me and my younger sister being stupid! 'word from the wise' never do that! lol)

oh yeah, i remember over the summer, i was riding Lucky and his shoe was loose but i thought nothing of it b/c it wasnt that bad. but we went over the jump and landed wrong and his shoe slid back and he ripped an inch off the wall of his hoof. he was off for 3 1/2 months. it was awful. but my sister had this AMAZING horse, but he was a bit of a phsyco (fabulous jumper, but if you didnt rode him more than he wanted, or used to much spur, he would literally go bronco on you until you were off!) so i got to ride him for 3 months, and show him a few times until lucky was back in action!! but thankfully Lucky is a pretty healthy horse, and has never gotten hurt or injured to the point were i couldnt ride him (other than the hoof incident of cousre!) has Syd ever been injured?

well usually i only have time to ride Lucky during school, but i'll come home about 3:30, and ride then, if i have any more time i'll ride one of the other horses. but during the weekends, they usually have me riding 3 to 5 horses a day. so i'm worn slap out by Monday! lol, thats usually why i'm late to school! haha, is sydney the only horse you ride?

oh yes! lol, both my parents are trainers, so we have 35 horses. most of them are either boarded, leased, or schooling horses. We have 5 personal horses, 5 leased horses, and 8 schooling horses. the rest are boarded, but as far as our personal horses goes, theres Lucky (my boy) Joe (my moms 'old' boy) Abercrombie (my moms 'new' boy) Teddy (my dads horse) and Alfey (my dads 'old' horse) but Alfey is only 18 so i still ride him alot. actually i think that horse will still be running when hes 30. right now i jump him 3'3. but his max height when my dad rode him was 5ft. so all of our horses are pretty amazing! My sister was the lucky one though, and got to ride and show Alfey and Joe before they were retired! Shes 23, and is actually a trainer to. i'm only 13!

yeah we dont do it all the time, but just when i think hes up for it! Hes kinda lazy to, but he gets pumped up when we're jumping. when i do hunters i just use a crop, but he gets really fiesty when i use spurs, so if we do jumpers i'll put on ball spurs and use a crop, and its like he just knows there there so he goes! lol, whats syd's maximum jumping height?

no i havent jumped him that high. but my mom can jump like 6ft. and i had never seen lucky jump over 3'6 (which is what i ride him over b/c my mom likes for me to school over my competition level!) anyways, so i asked my mom if she would ride him and jump him at least 3'9. So lucky got a lil full of himself, and started over jumping the 4ft. jumps so we raised him to 4'6 (his old owners didnt even know he could jump that high) and he easily jumped 3 full 4'6 courses! I was like DANNNNNNGGGGGGG lucky! lol have you ever shown in jumpers with Syd?

I'm so excited! i think Sydney and Lucky are exact opposites! Lucky can jump about 4'3, and he HATES jumping smaller than 2'6. (he really hates that to though! lol) how high can Syd jump?
