How We Met

Most Recent Update! Soon after posting for help I found a way to transport Mia. Thank you to all that gave advice, helped with info., and offered their kindness! But as soon as she arrived, I could see that she was different from the last time I had seen her. I started researching these changes, and found out that Mia is IR (Insulin Resistant)--som- e call it Pre-Cushings. I have been struggling to find vets and farriers that would listen, feed stores that would order her special feeds and minerals, and testing blood and hay. . .We are still not totally there, but doing better. But now she is with me and I can take proper care of her--that is all that matters!
URGENT! NEW UPDATE! OUR FAMILY FRIENDS HAVE OFFERED TO GIVE MIA TO ME, BUT I HAVE TO FIND A WAY TO SHIP HER FROM WV TO LA! CAN ANYONE HELP?? SHE WILL BE SOLD FOREVER IF I CANNOT FIND SOMEONE! SHE IS ALL I HAVE LEFT OF MY FAMILY THERE!
My great aunt and uncle bought a pony for the grandkids to ride, but she was left in the pasture so long by herself that she didn't let anyone ride her anymore. Talk about an ornery pony! I was the only one that could ride her, and one summer I stayed with them in West Virginia and worked with her the entire summer. We became inseparable! She improved her attitude so much that the farrier thought she was a different horse! My uncle recently started fighting cancer and they had to sell the farm to friends of the family, but she will always be mine! Luckily, the people that bought her and the farm are friends, and I can see her anytime I can make it there!
***UPDATE***
RECENTLY I FOUND OUT THAT MY UNCLE IS LOSING HIS BATTLE WITH CANCER AND IT WOULD BE GREAT FOR HIM TO SEE HIS LITTLE PONY WIN HOTD!! SO VOTE PLEASE TO PUT A SMILE ON HIS FACE!!!
There is a picture of my uncle in Mia's photos.
CANCER UPDATE:
Thank you to all who voted for Mia yesterday, May 16; sadly my uncle passed on the same day, and I never got the chance to tell him that she got HOTD. But I'm sure he knows it now, if it even matters compared to all the glories of heaven. . .If anything, it helped me. I really appreciated all of the sympathy and shared stories about lost loved ones. I find it comforting how strangers can find a common ground and a shared feeling of humanity when they are suffering. To some this may have sounded like a silly thing to do, but to me it was worth it not to feel alone in my grief. Thank you all so much.

Thank you so much for stopping by today on the first of the year, 1/1/11 and the first day of Pippin's run for horse of the month! I hope you all had a wonderful day celebrating New Year's and that you enjoy the rest of your weekend.

Today's first mini fact!

Miniature horses have uniquely small feet!

Yes, it's true! And while that is an obvious fact unless you've met one you really can't imagine how small they really are. The first time I laid eyes on Pippin he was only 4 months old and what struck me were his teeny tiny hooves! Of course, they're bigger now but still at 2" in diameter they are mighty small.

Miniature horses cannot be shod because the nails required to keep shoes in place would splinter the hoof wall. But, their hooves are much sturdier than their larger counterparts. Because minis are small their hooves take very little stress and they can not only trot on hard pavement without any adverse affects but can even gallop. A trim every two or three months keeps them in shape and they're good to go.

Miniature horses that work as therapy or guide horses often wear horse sneakers. This keeps them from slipping on polished surfaces and stops their hooves from damaging delicate surfaces.

Thanks again for your support and I hope to see you all the rest of this month. Leaving a vote of appreciation.

P.S. I had to do a doubletake when reading about Mia and IR and the farrier. Someone has a sheep on here named Mia and at first I thought that's who you were! Congratulations on getting Mia but I'm sorry to hear about the IR. I know it's not easy but with proper care she can live a normal and active life. Good luck!

Come visit me, Prince, Pippin (Remembering Melian) & Eddie.

Even tho' the storm missed us Thursday, the winds got up. I was standing between the kitchen and livingroom and felt the house vibrating. I always check my trees to see if any more have blown over. About 7 miles north of us, the wind and rain hit so hard, roads were flooded, property destroyed and a mobile home was flipped over. .. When I got home from work last night, Lightning was calling out to me. He wanted a treat. He was so impatient, he started pawing the ground. I let him out of the corral yesterday and he arched his neck as he ran playfully. First time I've let him out in a while. Hugs and a Saturday vote.

congratulations on your hotd. i'd try vet and feed stores to find out if they know who has horses, then try to find out if any of them know anyone who does hauling. i'm often left cards for people trying to start up small business services, like hauling. seems like if you google "horse hauling or transportation" you'd get some companies.

HI Mia, here's a vote for you and a prayer that you get home safe and sound. This is the name and phone number of a commerical hauler that I used to bring a horse in from KS to NJ. Very good transportation eithnics. J.L. and Kay McLemore phone number 509-995-2140. They transported a three year old quarter horse/palomino for me in 2008. I can't say enough about the great care he got on the trip here. Marion & Indy . Indy is the horse they brought in for me. Check him out.

Congratulations HOTD Mia!!!
TGIF Yeah! One more Friday vote for you, have a fantastic day:) It looks like you have gotten some great answers, I hope something works out for you:)

I didn't ride Fancy for 2 days, then I rode her Thursday morning for a few minutes and let her eat grass. She was better than the last time I rode her. As usual, the closer to the road we get, she gets excited and wants to rush. And when we ride up the street, every now and then she rushes. Indy's mom reminded me to do circles. I do this in the yard. I don't know why I didn't think to do that when we are out. DUH:) But any way, I did this when she began to rush and I would go back down the street closer to home, like take 2 steps forward and 3 steps back. This seemed to encourage her to rush a lot less. It looks like I can work through this after all. Most horses are barn sour (wants to stay at the barn), my horse is street sour,LOL.(wants to go, go, go.) Any body elses horse have this condition:)????

I am getting better at sitting her gaits. I desire to post and there is nothing to post with. I feel like I'm just sitting not doing anything. Maybe that is because we are just walking too. Oh well. But riding Fancy is a lot of fun, I can't deny that:)

CONGRATULATIONS MIMI from Petite Fleur
I sure hope your transport works out! AND I hope your *H*O*T*D* brings a huge smile to uncle's face for his sweet little girl! Vote 284 for a gal who should have easy access to transport in the USA! A reputable one will have her with protection on her face head, legs and a sitter with her and deliver her to your home! I am praying she gets that and please make sure she is protected for the ride in a transport carrier rather than a van. Love and good luck from us in France! P.S. My own mare is being transported next week for a month while we are away, but we never have a problem with reliable transports here whether it is 18 kilometers or 600!

Hi...I have moved my horses from Ut to Texas and back again useing Horse express. I'm not sure if you are looking for transport service or just a friend to bring the horse to you. I have had great results with horse express and they can be found on the internet. The move for 3 horses was areound $750.00 Not sure for just one. Hope that helps:) Good luck

Vote 280 for beautiful PISTACHE (MIA) from Petite
In French it means Pistachio nut, but Cajun is totally different:)! I am looking into transports because I have friends who transport their horses from Arabia, Holland, etc. all the way to the USA! That should make yours easy! However, you should not need air transport! Just make sure she is face and body protected for a long trailer ride with a reputable transport! Iam here in France so I cannot offer a ride, he he! BUT I would do it in a New York nano second as I have a Landcruiser 4X4 with a hook for a horse trailer. Best of luck!
