More about mules in our Nation's history...Until the conception of the San Antonio-San Diego (SAAD) mail line, the military couriers took mail from the East to the West whenever it was convenient. James E. Birch, a business man from Rhode Island, won the contract for the SAAD from the government in 1857. Birch moved West and became the president of the California Co, the largest stage coach company in the world.
The first run left San Antonio July 9, 1857. 53 days later James E Mason & Samuel Ames rode on mules ahead of the mail wagon, going down in history as the first to complete the run. The first run used six armed men, one wagon, and 19 mules. Another coach and 27 mules were sent ahead for relay. Indians attacked them and stole the mules. After the first run the mail met the established standard of over 1475 miles in 30 days, each time, without fail. On the 3rd run, 3 coaches made the trip with 17 armed men, 38 mules and 4000 lbs. of rations and supplies.

Looks like it's gonna be a fine day here. I fixed another safe place to tie her out, but the ground is too soggy.
