I'm trying to catch up on my blogs. I'm about 2 weeks behind again. I suppose I may as well just accept the fact that I can't blog as much as I'd like. How is Bomber doing?

I'm glad you love the mountains too. There's nothing better as long as there are a few open spots to run flat out. I would always look for those when I rode my TB in NZ. Nevada mountains are just like the ones here. In fact, we're in the same mountain range. Small world, huh?

As for large dogs, well, Melian isn't so small as she seems. She's 24" tall. And Eddie's owner has a border collie who is always around the horses with no problem. She does try to herd them but she listens when she's told not to. I think it just takes patience, practice, and lots of time. The latter usually being the key ingredient that no one has!

How is your headache? I'm so glad you weren't badly hurt and that you were wearing your helmet. A friend of mine died by being bucked off her horse. I didn't use to wear a helmet when I was younger but I always do now and it has saved me at least a couple of times.

My sister and I rode this morning. It was pretty cold and both Eddie and Prince were quite lethargic. I guess I don't really blame them. We had a nice ride anyway but I didn't try jumping. Prince was barely lifting his feet so jumping was out of the question. Melian wore her new coat and she didn't run around as much either. But that isn't to say she didn't do anything. Normally she'll run flat out for an hour while we ride but this time she took a few breaks in between to sniff things. So she still got her day's worth of exercise in.

Pippin is doing great and I've taken him and Melian on a few more cart rides. He responds so well and Melian now runs to the cart immediately when I say "car". There's no hesitation and Pippin, of course, still goes to the far right when I say that. Melian is also getting really good at not being so tempted to chase them. Yet today when I was driving she looked out the window at a tempting truck and started licking her lips. Does she really think she can eat them?

Anyway, it's been pretty hectic here. My mother and grandmother visited a week ago and that was really nice to see them again. I hadn't seen my grandmother in two years because she lives overseas. And she got to meet Melian for the first time. They got along really well. And Pippin likes her because she gives him treats.

Well, that's all from me this time. The salmon are spawning here and it's really neat to see them. And we saw a golden eagle the other day eating something by the side of the road. It was just so magnificent. Okay, I'll stop now. Here's a vote for you and I hope everything is going fine for you and Bomber. ttyl

Hey, that's okay that you haven't written in awhile. That's how I am a lot of the time too. I just get so busy.

Happy belated birthday to Bomber! Five is a perfect age. Pippin is 4.5. Riding bareback is fun and not only can you feel him better but he can feel you too. You can give subtler aids. So, how did the backing up go?

Thanks for mentioning Melian. She is doing pretty well in training for a 6 month old. If you want to get your dogs used to Bomber you might try tying them up in a field while you ride there. I did that for several weeks with Melian and Eddie and Prince before letting her fun off leash. Fortunately, the horses were already used to their own dogs.

I had a very exciting evening on Saturday. I drove Pippin across the highway and up the mountains for a bit. Melian ran alongside and somehow Sven (our little maltipoo) managed to wheedle his way into the deal too. So he rode in my lap and ran a little bit of the way. Once we were far enough from the highway I let Melian off the leash. Pippin was trotting away and she was running all over the place. It's one of Pippin's favourite places to go.

Melian was tempted to chase a car but I was very stern and she was good and listened to m. Then a Forestry truck drove by and Melian didn't chase it but guess who did? Pippin! He got so excited and started cantering up the hill after it. I let him because he was having fun and wasn't in too much earnest. The sun was setting and was shining in our eyes and the dust from the dirt road rose in a big cloud after the truck. Soon the dust cloud was completely illuminated by the sun so that it was completely bright and white. Pippin looked into it and had an expression on his face that said, "Where did they go?!" It was kind of funny. Melian looked a little confused. Perhaps they vanished into the mist. And Sven just looked cute.

When we turned around I picked up Sven and clicked at Pippin to run. He started galloping really fast down the mountain and Melian was running alongside. Then she stopped to sniff something and Pippin went on ahead. Melian realized that she wanted to catch up so she took off again and Pippin heard her coming. I thought he was going at full speed but suddenly, upon seeing Melian coming like a lightning bolt, he went into supersonic high gear and shot off at warp speed. But Melian was still faster and overtook Pippin. Despite going at warp speed with Pippin Melian just looked like a blur as she passed us. I guess she's faster than Pippin now. I estimate at least 30mph because the highest I've clocked Pippin is at 24mph and that night he was definitely faster than that. Sven just sat in my lap and wasn't worried by the speed at all.

We had to come to a quick stop though because one of the traces came off the cart. This is the part of the harness that actually pulls the cart. So, I slowed Pippin and then stopped him and reattached the harness. I guess it's not built for high speeds. And then we were off again. I

How are you doing? I'm sorry I haven't written for a few days. Tiny's birthday was on Monday last week and then she won dog of the day. I had 4 pages of her blogs to answer and this week has been so busy.

Jake sounds really pretty. You should post a photo of him too. And that's really neat that Bomber jumped on a lead for you. Pippin will do that too.

Last night I took Pippin out with the cart and Melian ran alongside. I've only tried this a couple of times before. Actually, only once without a group of people there. Well, both of them were just perfect.

They both obeyed everything I told them and Melian didn't pull on the lead but just ran nicely alongside. Pippin knows that when I say car that he has to go to the far right side and he'll do that automatically. I only have to say it once and he's there.

Well, I want Melian to automatically jump into the cart when a car comes. It is much safer there. The first time I tried to make her do that she absolutely did not want to do it. She pulled back and panicked. I thought that it was going to take me several training sessions to make this work but last night everytime I said car and then stopped Pippin she came right over and jumped into the cart with no hesitation whatsoever. She is pretty amazing and once she understands what I want she'll do it.

Tonight I took them again and a friend rode her bike. Pippin loves following bikes and sometimes he tries to bite them. So he was really eager to go and at several points we were galloping and Melian was easily running alongside. She did get a little carried away. The faster we went the more she growled in excitement. And the more she growled the faster Pippin went.

I thought that it might be hard to control, one hand with the reins, the other with the lead, but Pippin listened nicely and slowed down. Melian still needs to learn the quiet command. I guess we need to work on that. It takes some concentration to control the reins and a lead. I don't know how one drives a huge team of horses. That's a lot of rein.

And there's one more thing about the cart ride. Twice Melian needed to go potty while we were in the middle of a fast trot. Well, she doesn't give any warning but just suddenly stops and squats. Pippin was so good that he stopped instantly on my whoa and there wasn't even any pull on Melian's collar from the lead. He's a pretty good boy.

I rode Prince on Thursday. There were a couple of men there taking photos of my sister and me riding. Their owner wanted a photo of Prince jumping but he absolutely would not jump. He walked over them a few times and jumped a ground pole a couple of times but that was it. I think he may have been a little spooked because they were there. I guess it's a good thing we aren't expecting to showjump him!

Here's a vote for the Bomber boy. I hope you had a great weekend and I'm wishing you a wonderful week.

I'm glad that everything is going great. Okay, I have to say that I've never seen a pile of broken computers on a trail ride. That is pretty funny.

I'm so glad that Bomber is fine after getting his leg stuck. That is so scary and could have been fatal. Yikes!

Yes, I do live in California but I've never taken the Donner Pass. It would be fun to do sometime. And we're not too far away from it. Time is always a problem. I only have time to ride once a week. So, are you in Australia? I used to live in New Zealand.

Tomorrow, Monday, is Tiny's birthday. She would have been 16. I miss her a lot but tomorrow is a celebration of her life and the wonderful years that we had together. I would really appreciate if you would stop by her page tomorrow with a note and a vote. If you can't leave a note because you don't have a profile on the DC then perhaps you could just leave a vote. Her number is 12997.

Thanks so much. And here's a vote for you. ttyl

How is Bomber doing? That's great that the flying changes are coming along. Is he behaving over the cavaletti better now?

Thanks for trying to watch Pippin's video. If it doesn't work for you on HC then you can try watching it on YouTube. Our username is PringlePoirot if you want to search under that.

I think it's a good idea to get your dog used to Bomber before letting him loose. I had Melian tied in the field quite a few times before I had her loose. Plus she's around Pippin so she is somewhat used to horses, even if he's a small one.

I took Pippin for a walk last night and there's an irrigation ditch that runs through the forest. It's empty right now and he won't cross it. Well, I managed to persuade him to cross because I had a couple of dog biscuits in my pocket. I was so proud of him. I'll have to try it again.

It was twilight and he saw a big pile of logs in the forest. He had been acting all tough but those were scary and he hid behind me and peeked around my side. Big tough guy! I just laughed at him and then he went and sniffed them and decided that they were alright. He's not really spooky but I guess they took him by surprise.

Melian is doing great. The other evening we were sitting on the couch watching TV and Melian couldn't get comfortable on the couch. I guess the cushions weren't quite right and she was too hot. So, twice she tried to arrange herself and then looked at me forlornly and howled a deep hound howl. It was so funny. I finally made her a bed on the floor with a couple of blankets where she could stretch out to her heart's content. She is so funny sometimes.

I took her to the vet for a social visit a few days ago and it was really funny because she was terrified of three tiny little kittens. They were in a cage on the floor and she wouldn't go anywhere near it. One of them was looking at her! Oh no! I had to stand between her and the cage before she would pass.

I hope you had a great weekend and enjoy a wonderful week. Here's a vote for you.

P.S. I would really appreciate it if you would please vote for Melian daily in the cutest dog contest and ask your friends for votes too. I think we may have a chance this week. We need about 1500 votes by the end of the week. Here's the link and don't forget to remove the spaces.

Good luck with those flying lead changes. How's it going? I know that one method for teaching them is to do a figure eight and place a ground pole at the intersection. At the pole transition to a trot for a couple of a paces and then pick up the canter again on the other lead. Eventually he'll learn to change leads at the pole and you'll be able to do fewer paces trotting until you just make a flying change. I hope that this helps.

I rode Prince again yesterday morning and we, with my sister on Eddie, went on a nice ride through the fields. It was nice to just ride and relax and not think about any training. In fact, Eddie was so relaxed that he fell asleep at the trot. His eyes were shut and his head was drooping so low!

Last week on Friday, (yep, I got 2 rides last week), I was going to jump Prince again. I pulled out that tempting alfalfa plant and fed it to him and Eddie after their rides. Then I was all set and cantered a little. Melian was loose for the first time and I wanted to see how she would react to the horses. I've brought her with me each time but always had her tied in the field and just watching us. Well, she was very good. She listened to everything that I told her while I was mounted and even came when I called. Then I had her follow while I cantered.

She did bark at Prince once while he was cantering and he bucked. That caused the stitching in the girth to come undone so I was basically riding with a loose saddle and no girth. I didn't realize, I just thought it felt a little loose but then my sister told me. I was just about to jump too. So, it's a good thing that I didn't otherwise the saddle would have slid off. I did canter a bit but I guess I must have been balanced enough for it to stay in position. Ah, the excitement for the day.

Now I need to fix the girth so that I can jump again. How are things? I hope you had a great weekend. Ours was long here for labour day. Did you get a chance to see Pippin in action yet? Here's another vote for you.
