How We Met

I'll never forget the day Boo stepped off the trailer that had brought him to us from South Carolina. It was three years ago this Thanksgiving. He walked off that ramp, straight into my arms, and stayed there, hugging me and whinnying wildly. I was instantly smitten. That cute face, that shiny black coat, that high whinny - and that adorable little white mustache on the bottom of his upper lip ("Got treats?"). Talk about charisma!
After a few months with Boo, I was thinking he might have been a "mistake." After all, he was 6 years old and my daughter was 7. Ugh - green on green makes black & blue! Boo had dumped our trainer and one of her intermediate riders in the first week at our old barn. Being a new horse owner, I didn't know how best to address these issues, but kept at it, trying to find the right combination of training "tricks."
Two years went by. We tried everything (we THOUGHT). We were told “he’ll never be a child’s pony!.” After some travels around with a couple of trainers that also had no luck, we decided to "bring him home" to the new barn we were at,as a companion for my mare, Shoni. We simply loved him too much to send him somewhere else, being afraid that no one would give him the chances we had. We did not expect him to do anything other than enjoy life and look cute.
Well, lo and behold, last spring Katie started riding him out on the trails near the barn, and he turned into this awesome, stone cold trail pony. My daughter was ecstatic; me too!
But then the "perfect storm" came in June. Boo got pigeon fever (Cornibacterium pseudotuberculo- sis), getting abscesses on his belly midline and - ouch! - in his sheath. Then he nearly drank himself to death on June 23: he blew out all the electrolytes in his system, went into acidosis and was seizuring violently. I found him on the ground, sweated, heaving, and ataxic. He was careening around the stall, cutting his face, shoulders, and haunches against the wall as he threw himself around in a post-seizure panic. Finally, after an eternity, the vets arrived, and managed to stabilize him well enough to take him to the hospital.
At the vets', Boo was also diagnosed with EPM. We decided to try treatment with Marquis for two months, and now.... well, today he is so well recovered that we took him to his first hunter/jumper show with Katie and they took 3rd place in both their classes!! We are even more in love with him than ever.

Our family decorated the tree yesterday, my baby boy really enjoyed this! But I couldn't find my outside decorations:( Fancy was so sweet when I went to feed her. She rears and twirls around when she sees me coming in her direction. And I wondered if it was a test of "Whose in Charge", I discovered by her actions when I get to her, she only misses me and wants me near. Because when I get there she is submisive and sooo sweet, when I get to her she gently blows into my nostrils, which means she accepts me. And I blow back, then puts her head close to me and she is just sooo sweet.

How does your horse greet you? Here is a "Christmas day will be here before you know it" vote.

I had a great time today out with my Fancy. I have left her warm and dry in her stall awaiting the rain (possibly mixed snow) late tonight. We leave for you "a very chilly Friday night in NC" Christmas vote.

We didn't get to walk yesterday because the men came to cut the large tree down and it took all evening. They got the tree down and hauled off the top part. They are coming back with some equipment to load the bottom half cause it is tooo big. They are going to make something with the wood so they couldn't cut it down. This was an excellent experience for Fancy because she was afraid at first. About 20 minutes into the sawing she calmed down and didn't even pay them any attention. I was so proud of her. Everything is a learning experience for our horses, which can be good or bad.

On this grand Monday morning we leave a vote for you in honor of Fancy's last day as QUEEN Of NOVEMBER. Life is short and friends are few, we appreciate HorseChannel and all the friends we have made thus far. LOVE & JOY TO THE NEXT REINING HOTM!!!

Fancy and Frances here leaving you an it's been wonderful reining as November HOTM vote. It has been a lovely Fri and Sat here in NC. We hope for more of this pleasant weather today. Both days we hung out in the yard with Fancy. Last night when I put her up my boys decided to take their Jack Russel, Bindi, for a walk up the street. Oh, this got to Fancy. She saw them walking toward the street and she twirled, looked at me, looked at them, reared, looked at me, lifted her head over the gate and looked at me. I knew she wanted to go. Fancy was saying come on and my boys were saying come on Mom. I felt bad, but it was getting dark and I had to put the water hose up, lock the shed, etc. I promised to accompany them another day because I don't like to walk Fancy out of the yard after dark. All in all our weekend has been great. We hope your weekend is all that and more!

Thanks so much for your loving response to my Friday blog. Please don't forget to visit and vote for Toby in McMinnville, OR as often as possible.

More of "Boo's Story"
In an effort to get Boo's Welsh Pony Association papers so that Katie can ride him in their shows next season, I managed to find out where Boo was born and a little more about his life story.
The poor little guy has been dragged all over the place in the first decade of his life. No wonder he had such a hard time settling down!
He was born at Mountain Ridge Farms in Utah. He was sold along with his brother, as a driving pair, to someone in Idaho. From there, they both went to Florida. Somehow, he (and his brother?) ended up at a very well-known driving barn in South Carolina, where the owner uses all black ponies with white marks in her teams. His driving partners all had "formal wear" names like "Spats" and "Top Hat" - sooo cute!
When I think of the fact that I bought him when he was six and a half, that means he had gone from - at least - Utah to Idaho to Florida to South Carolina to California in that short time. And that doesn't include all the places he must have been shipped to as a competitive driving pony (he hated that job, apparently) or any other moves between Florida and South Carolina.
So it makes me happy that we made the decision to let his perambulations stop with us, and to let him settle in to a happy, slow-paced life with us, where my daughter and I can give him all sorts of love and cuddlin, and RELAXED adventures from here on in!

Anyway, that's Boo's story so far - thanks for listenin'.

About some of the pictures in my gallery
There's nowhere to edit titles for the pictures in the gallery, so I just wanted to add that the last two pictures in Boo's gallery are of his daddy 'n momma. His sire was Menai Spartacus, and his dam was Tarry A Bit Patty Cake. Boo has white on 3 feet, just like Spartacus, but the shape of his face is just like his momma's. Come to think of it, Boo really is a momma's boy!!! :)
