How We Met

Shoni was a neglected horse at my old barn. Her owner saw to it that she was fed and watered, but that's all. I befriended her 3 years ago, and began going into her stall to brush her. At first, she would just stare at me from the back of the stall, but she found out soon I was friendly and wanted to give her good things. Soon I was brushing her each day, and then I asked her owner if I could turn her out. He was more than happy to let me take care of this animal that he claimed had been a family favorite (whoa, I'd hate to be OUT of favor in THAT family!), and by spring of 2007, he asked if I wanted to buy her. Against all my friends' advice, I went ahead and did it, because by then I was too much in love with her to let anyone else have her. I knew that I could take the time it would take to bring her back out of the shell she had climbed into.

5 months later, after slowly slowly slowly getting her to trust me and bringing her back into fitness, Shoni and I took our first ever trail ride together. It was a joyous day!

Since then, we have continued to come to know each other and developed a trusting relationship. We have a new trainer who is helping us learn dressage work so that I can keep Shoni fit for as long as possible. We have so much more to do together, so many more trails to ride together! I hope that next spring, we can do a novice rider class together at a small show. Just once, just to show her off, my little rescued princess!!
