Kind of weird....I believe Rio's mane has changed sides looking at her pictures.

How We Met

We had been looking and had just bought a little buckskin filly, (Doll) so I e-mailed the woman that had this one (helping someone that couldn't take care of her to find her a good home) that we had found one close to home already so we wouldn't be getting her's. The woman joked and said something like "But you do know she wants a companion...and I have it!!! My husband decided she was right and so this little filly came about the first of the year!

I know we are probably crazy but what fun to have two!.

I hope you gals and guys are saddling up Saturday and/or Sunday in support of our Veterans. People who give or gave their lives for others each day they served, when they really did not have to do so. Wow, what amazing people they are.

My granddad was in WWII and my oldest son has served in the Afghanistan wars, working on communications devices. I have one cousin serving in the navy, that was injured during the attack against the United States Navy destroyer USS Cole on October 12, 2000.

We all are affected by the military in some way.

No ride today, it was very chilly and windy :(

Does anyone remember reading last month, about a nationwide Ride to Remember Veterans during Veteran's Day weekend, Nov. 10-11, 2012? How would you guys like to have our own HorseChannel ride in honor of Veteran's Day? We can chose one day that we all will ride on, even if it is only for a few minutes or just to sit on the horse during the Veteran's holiday. Then we could share our pics from that day and share our story of the day. If you agree would Sunday November the 11 be ok for our ride date?

November is a time of thanks. Thanks should be part of our every day lives all year long. Let us be thankful for our friends and loved ones. Let us be kind one to another. Cruelty has no place among true friends.

Hi! Did you have a busy, fun weekend? What have you been up to?

I have been on the move, but I enjoyed it! Saturday morning, Fancy participated in her first parade! It was a really big homecoming parade, with lots of tight crowds and loud bands! Fancy was excited for the first 15 to 20 minutes, but after that she was very relaxed and was not bothered by bouncing children on the sidelines. In past years, I have ridden my previous horses in this parade, but I never got to participate in the tradition of riding around the football field before the game. I could not get my past horses onto the football field because they were afraid. Well yesterday, I did for the first time, ride around the football field, with my Fancy! Fancy even took the lead and she did that running walk at least half way around! It was so much fun! I will never forget the first time I got to ride around the football field!!!!! Oh, and to boot, the home team won their game!!!!!! I would like to believe Fancy gave them good luck when she went around the field. LOL!
Half way through the day all I could think of was how this has to be my best day ever with Fancy. And then I think to myself, I have had so many days that I thought were my best day ever with Fancy! Saturday morning, I lost my keys on the way out of town. The keys fell off the side of the trailer or the truck. But I found them completely mangled on the side of a busy street after 6 hours of being run over in heavy traffic. Even though I had the lost key problem, I still had that feeling of this being the best day ever!

Saturday night, our family attended our horseshow end of year banquet. This was our first time attending and I had no idea what to expect. So, I did not take my camera and I was very surprised to see Little Cowboy & Trigger won a good bit of awards. Little Cowboy was so excited to share the awards with Trigger, they used their new snaffle bit and new grooming kit tonight. He is going to save his new blanket for next years show season. Little Cowboy rode until dark, and I did get a few pictures tonight before it got too dark.

It was a lovely day until the rains came in. There was a long storm that recently ended. It feels really nice outside these days.
Trigger was blind in one eye before we got him. Monday his blind eye was very cloudy. Today the vet told me Trigger is fine long as he is in no pain. He is such a great kids horse. I hate that something happened to his eye and I pray that I can take good care of him from now on.

Please visit Sassy Sapphire #193884 and leave an encouraging word. From what I can tell, her blog to me says Sassy Sapphire's owner lost her father this past Sunday morning.

One of my friends was out last Saturday at one of the state parks riding and there was an accident. Her friend dismounted to help and her friend's palomino TWH walked off. They were on the news tonight asking for help to find the missing horse. Please pray that they find Jasmine in good health very soon.

THANKS for the congrats on Cowboy & Trigger's fun show success♥ He was tickled about the blogs!

We trailered to the farm for a trailride with Buttercup! I hate not being able to get any pics this time. Fancy surprised me! Fancy was not very familiar with the drop down into the creek, but she went slowly and with out any problem. Then we worked Buttercup at the same creek crossing because Buttercup was determined not to cross, but she didn't know about me. LOL. We got her to cross it several times before leaving! And Little Trigger was the champ of the day! He rode Little Cowboy and his smaller cousin all day. And he trudged along like a champ without giving them any problem what so ever. I am sure are getting to like that little horse ")

Any one enjoying any horse shows this weekend or any riding?

FANCY'S PERCEPTIONS:

Little Cowboy went to see the Avengers Thursday night with his older brother.
Buttercup has been acting like a bucking rodeo horse. Then my brother got a cramp in his leg. LOL

Friday I used the clippers on Fancy for the second time. I allowed plenty of time for desensitizing. She was very good and seemed to enjoy the vibration of the clippers on her chin. It was funny, the way she kept moving her chin towards the clippers when I would move them away.

Saturday Fancy and I attended our 2nd horse show. This was a very first show for Cowboy and Trigger. There was a lot more horses competing in each class this time!
I was not able to keep up with how many horses were in each class this time. Fancy got 5th place in Open Halter all mares and 3rd place in Adult Western Non-Trotting. Fancy didn't place in Adult Halter English or Western this time.

Trigger was on his best ever behavior! Cowboy and Trigger placed in each event they entered! They got 4th place in Youth Western Walk/Jog, 2nd place in Youth Catalog Race, and 4th place in Youth Flag Race. Cowboy and Trigger received lots of comments on how they seemed perfect for one other. My little duo made a ton of friends of all ages. The farm dog took a liking to them too. People were saying that dog would have to go home with Cowboy and Trigger. OH NO, Can't afford to feed any thing else! LOL :~)

FANCY'S PERCEPTIONS, Cowboy Definitions:
Adam's Ale - Water.

Cowboy took Trigg to the vet after school today. I thought he might be a pony or something. LOL! But the vet says he is a full Arabian, just kind of small and he says that can be normal.

After our vet visit, Cowboy and I visited the farm. Buttercup has given her little heart to my brother after all. Buttercup was out, eating grass when my brother walked by, she actually wanted to follow him with ears forward and a very happy horsey expression! So different from weeks ago!!! I am happy for him.

I forgot to tell you, I got Fancy some sweet rolls for her birthday and she did not like them. I had to get Fancy some watermelon. But Trigger loved the sweet rolls, so I gave him the sweet rolls. Fancy would get in between Trigg and the sweet rolls and try to keep him from eating them. When she walked or turned away from them Trigg would try to sneak around her to get them. It would take him a while, but finally he would get to eat them. Those two were so funny.

Fancy and I are learning some things for our new halter and showmanship interest. It is going to take some time before we are ready for showmanship. But we can have fun learning in the meantime.

I may be offline Saturday. I will try and log in to vote contest if I can't do anything else.

This morning, my husband told me I need to bring Fancy in the house so I can stop looking out of the window. I was really looking to see if she was still clean. And guess what?!!! I dedicate this special occasion of our first show together to Joanna and Pixie Dust.

Fancy spent Friday night in a blanket with hopes she would be more clean than dirty come morning. The back clip had come undone, but that blanket did serve the purpose. Fancy only had one area on the side of her neck that was dirty. Once at the farm, I cleaned her dirty spot and her feet before introducing Fancy to the sandy arena. At first she was a little excited to be in a new place, but soon settled down. We only entered two classes this time. Fancy was fine, except she did not like horses standing behind her. When horses were lined up behind us, Fancy kept trying to spin around to see exactly what they had in mind back there.
We entered class 2 Adult Halter with 6 entries and Fancy placed 3rd!!!! This was the first time I ever won a ribbon with any horse!!! I was so excited. We didn't do so well in Class 3 as we placed 5th out of 5. However, We did leave with 2 ribbons from our first show!!!

My brother and I did ground work exercises with Buttercup today. She is very smart, with the exception of the ear thing. She will do anything you ask of her, but she pins her ears back a lot. To me that is the sign of an unhappy camper. I guess she will settle in after she has been with us a little longer and maybe then she will be happy. Have you ever had a horse that does that? with people? What is your impression when the horse pins its ears back while doing what ever you have asked it to do?

FANCY'S PERCEPTIONS, ANGELS HAVE NO PHILOSOPHY BUT LOVE:

Sometime in 1991, Joanna came across 2 Shetland ponies for sale in a want ad. Both ponies were purchased by her family and given to Bloomfield Hills School Farm. Joanna named the ponies Tinkerbell & Pixie Dust. Joanna helped her mom create and teach 'LOVE-A-PONY', an afterschool and summer class for children. For seven years Joanna was with her ponies almost every day. It has been over 19 years since creating LOVE-A-PONY, and I have read that this pony class is still being taught this very day.

Joanna's was confined to her bed the last 9 years of her life, during which Pixie Dust was allowed to visit Joanna at her bedside. Joanna also made friends all across the world with the use of her computer, thanks to her dad for building a stand that allowed her to safely use the computer while lying down.

Pixie Dust at 21 years old, has joined Joanna in Heaven. I have read that this date was sometime around or on the 27 of February, 2012. I can only imagine the joy felt during that reunion.

Joanna was extraordinary. Always thinking of how she could help others, even through the use of her ponies. She loved unconditional and she reached out to others, even when she needed to be reached out to.

Pixie Dust, belonged to our Facebook pal and HorseChannel member, Joanna Wicke. Joanna was loved by all who knew her. She was always positive and uplifting to others. Joanna welcomed Fancy and I to HorseChannel with unbelievable love and daily support. After a disturbing disappearance of Joanna, Sadie's owner, Joyce informed us that Joanna had passed away in her sleep at the tender age of 34 on September 23, 2011. It was only then that her many health conditions were revealed. Even though being confined to her bed for the past 9 years, Joanna never once revealed a single pain to us. What a remarkable YOUNG person to have as a friend.
It was in 1991 that Joanna & her mom purchased Pixie Dust to share with the Bloomfield Hills School Farm. For 7 years Joanna helped her mom create & teach Love-A-Pony, an afterschool & summer class for children.

We have enjoyed a fun horsey filled weekend. Cowboy was feeling better and ready to get going. Saturday evening we spent at the horse auction. Cowboy was very shocked to see a run-a-way Halflinger run past us in a panic. His owner had beat him with a pipe and the poor animal was doing his best to run away. This happened twice before we left. Same horse, same man, same pipe. I could not understand how no one reported the man.
We have afternoon storms lately, so our herd of 2 was very dirty. It only sprinkled a little today, which allowed us to groom them. Cowboy could not believe how much shedding hair and dirt was on his little Trigger. I thought Fancy was close to finished shedding until I curried her today! What a load of fluff!
Cowboy was very proud of his little obstacle coarse made with cones he set in the back yard. We took turns walking Trigger and Fancy through them. It sure did turn cold as the sun set. We put our herd of 2 in the corral and we headed in for the night. Surprise for me! This was the first time we put Fancy and Trigg in the corral for the night that Fancy did not chase Trigg and be mean to him. Yay Fancy! My good girl :)

The day I met Fancy:
March 9, 2009,8am: found classified add for 10 month TWH. That evening, we traveled to a VA farm. The owner pointed Fancy out, my heart immediately fell in love with this untouched filly. I saw a beautiful future in this long legged, woolly, running like crazy, with her big round bulging belly, filly. The drive from NC to VA was not in vain. The owner and his sons drove all horses into the barn and then ran them out, except one, Fancy. They got the halter on her and the fight was on. After finally reaching the trailer, it took forever to get her in the trailer. The guys had to lift her up and push her in. Ok that done, the sun had parted with us and we were on our way home.
We stopped at the convenience store and I looked in to check on what I planned to be my new best pal. She was not happy, but doing fine.
In the dark of the night, Fancy would not back out of the trailer. She actually decided she would rather lay down in the floor of the trailer rather than do anything we wanted her to do. We had already moved the partition to the side of the trailer to give her space, but we had to work around the center bar in between the back doors. Fancy would not get up for nothing in the world. I wanted to leave her there for the night, but feared she would hurt herself on the partition or something when she did get up. We carefully pulled her out without hurting her. I put her in a stall for the night so I would not fear her getting hurt because she did not know her surroundings. I did not sleep all that night!
Each day there after, I would sit in her presence for a while and when she showed signs of relaxing, I went in to catch her. She was tricky, but so was I. LOL. She slowly learned and gave me her trust.
Each day with Fancy is as exciting as the very first.

Fancy Queen of Heart Month is blowing a heart vote in your direction this beautiful Monday morning.

We thank Joey, Ginger, and Angel Betsy for suggesting us doing the Black History blogs this past few weeks. I enjoyed this project, it was fun to share some of my most favorite horsey characters with you guys. I appreciate the comments and responses we received.

'C' & I trailered Trigger home Saturday morning. 'C' led Trigger to the trailer, however once Trigg saw that he was leaving he pitched a fit for King Kong. King Kong was so busy eating grass, he had no cares for Trigger's plight. Once loaded Trigger was just fine. He didn't like the idea of a bath, but it was fun cleaning him up. After his baths we take him walking and let him graze while he dries.
Sunday evening, Trigger and Fancy were turned out together for the first time. To my surprise, Fancy is not even mean to Trigger, not at all. She lets him walk anywhere he wants to, lets him eat her hay and she even eats with him. However, she does stay in between Trigger and I. I was patting Fancy on the side of her neck and Trigger wanted a pat to. He walked towards me and Fancy ran him off. He looked so pitiful. I think after a while she will allow him to come to me too, because Trigger is the very first animal in our yard that Fancy is not very mean to. I wonder if she is nice to him because she remembers him from last summer when we visited the farm, he visited us, and we went riding together.
I was very tired Sunday night. I did get my profile photos changed, then I was off to bed.

Lawson-Kelly, is a non-profit community-service organization, developed and operated by African-American female equestrians whose mission is to encourage and empower inner city youth toward positive and successful lives through the use of horses. This female group of skilled equestrians have delighted crowds wherever they go. They have appeared in parades, rodeos and horse shows all across America. They have the proud honor of being the first female African-American female Equestrian organization to have been invited to the Tournament Of Roses Parade, in Pasadena, California, 1990, and 1991. Ebony Horsewomen members have appeared in the Martin Luther King, Jr. Parade, in Atlanta, Georgia, as well as the Bill Pickett Invitational Rodeo circuit, just to name a few appearances. Additionally, the State of Connecticut Legislature proclaimed EHI "Goodwill Ambassadors and declared Connecticut to be the official home of the Ebony Horsewomen. Willie Simms, born 1/16/1870, near Augusta, Georgia, U.S.—died 2/26/1927, Asbury, New Jersey), 1 of only 2 African American jockeys (the other is Isaac Burns Murphy) 2 have been elected 2 the National Museum of Racing’s Hall of Fame in Saratoga Springs, New York.
Simms began racing in 1887 & became the most successful rider 2 adopt the short stirrup since the antebellum slave & rider Abe Hawkins. The short stirrup lifts the rider over the horse’s withers, allowing the animal better balance. In 1895 Simms became the 1st American jockey 2 win in England, where sportswriters referred 2 him as a “monkey on a stick.” The short stirrup earned more esteem after the white American jockey Tod Sloan used it 2 win English races in 1897, & it came to be known as the “American seat.”
Simms won the Belmont Stakes in 1893 & 1894, the Kentucky Derby in 1896 & 1898, & the Preakness Stakes in 1898; he is the only African American 2 have won all of the Triple Crown classics. Simms was the leading American jockey (on the basis of number of wins) in 1893 & 1894. He retired in 1901 with 1 of the best lifetime winning percentages in the sport, 24.8.

STAGECOACH MARY, legend in her own time!
A Black gun-totin' female in the American wild west? Smoked cigars, 6 feet tall, short-tempered, 2-fisted, & packed a pair of 6-shooters & 8 or 10-gauge shotgun! Mary Fields was born a slave in Tennessee during the administration of Andrew Jackson.
A free woman in 1884, made her way 2 Cascade County (Montana), took a job with Ursuline nuns at the St. Peter Mission in Cascade city. Hired 2 do heavy work & haul supplies 2 keep the nuns' operation going. She chopped wood, did stone work, carpentry, dug holes, & her customary supply runs 2 the train stop, Great Falls, or city of Helena.
Woe 2 ruffian men who attempted 2 trample on her rights & hard won privileges. She broke more noses than any person in central Montana claims the Great Falls Examiner, the only newspaper in Cascade then.
After being fired from the nunnery for a gunfight with a co-worker, Mary opened her own restaurant. Nobody would eat her cooking= the restaurant closed.
1895, she landed a job carrying United States Mail. Being independent & determined, this was perfect for her. Mary developed a reputation for delivering letters & parcels no matter what the weather, nor how rugged the terrain. She & her mule, Moses, plunged through anything, from bitterly raw blizzards 2 wilting heat, reaching remote miner's cabins & outposts with important mail which helped accommodate the land claim process & other matters needing communication. Her efforts helped advance development of a considerable portion of central Montana, a contribution for which she is given little credit. Known as Stagecoach Mary (for her ability 2 deliver on a regular schedule), delivered mail until she was into her 60's, but it wore her down. She retired from the mail delivery business, still needing a source of income.
At age 70, she opened a laundry service, in Cascade. She didn't do a lot of laundry, but spent most time in the local saloon, drinking whiskey & smoking foul cigars with the sundry assortment of sweating, dusty men who were attracted 2 the place. 1 lout failed 2 pay his laundry bill to her, he had ordered extra starch in the cuffs & collar. Hearing him in the street, she left the saloon & knocked him flat with one blow - at the age of 72. She told her wobbly drinking companions that the satisfaction she got from that act was worth more than the bill owed, so the score was settled. Luck would have it, the tooth of his that she knocked out was giving him trouble anyway, so there was no reprisal. Actually, he was grateful.
1914 Mary died of liver failure. In spite of her drinking, cigar smoking, & occasional fisticuffs, townsfolk were hard pressed 2 believe that this mellow (!?) old woman of 80 was the hard shooting & short-tempered female character of earlier years they heard so much about. They were wrong. SHE WAS.

FANCY'S PERCEPTIONS,Black Cowboys!:
Images of black cowboys are scarce in popular culture, giving the false impression that people of color were not among the men and women who settled the West. By the end of huge cattle drives of cowboy legend, at least 5,000 black men had worked as cowboys. Historians estimate an average crew included two or three black cowboys.

William (Will, Bill) Pickett was a legendary cowboy from Taylor, Texas of black, white, and Indian descent, born December 5, 1870. In March 1932, Pickett tripped while roping a stallion and fell under the horse, which kicked him in the head. For 11 days he clung to life with a fractured skull. April 2, 1932, he died in a hospital in Ponca City, Oklahoma. Bill Pickett was inducted into the Rodeo Hall of Fame, Oklahoma City, in 1971, the first black rodeo athlete to be so honored. At the Cowboy Hall of Fame, these words are inscribed to Pickett's memory:
Like many men in the old time West
On any job he did his best
He left a blank that's hard to fill
For there will never be another Bill.

He was also honored in 1994 by The United States Post Office, who issued a postage stamp honoring Pickett as part of its "Legends of the West" series. There is also the Bill Pickett Invitational Rodeo held each year since 1984 in his honor.

Bill noticed the bulldogs capture stray steers by biting them on the lip and he thought why couldn't he do that. Pickett's method for bulldogging was biting a cow on the lip and then falling backwards. His method eventually lost popularity as the sport changed into steer wrestling that is practiced in rodeos today.
Riding his horse, Spradley, Pickett came alongside a Longhorn steer, dropped to the steer's head, twisted its head toward the sky, and bit its upper lip to get full control. That's how Pickett's technique got the name "bulldogging." As the event became popular among rodeo cowboys, the lip biting became less popular until it disappeared from steer wrestling. Bill Pickett, however, became an immortal rodeo cowboy, and his fame has grown since his death.
Bill Pickett became known for his tricks and stunts at local country fairs. In 1905, Pickett joined the 101 Ranch Wild West Show that featured the likes of Buffalo Bill, Cowboy Bill Watts, Will Rogers, Tom Mix, Bee Ho Gray, and Zach and Lucille Mulhall.

What a cold & windy day in NC! I did spend a bit of time today cleaning Fancy's corral. I was on my way into the shed and Fancy nickered to me. I know the look, she wants time out. I actually promised her I would give her time out when I finished putting my yard tools away. The wind was blowing so hard when I came out of the shed that I forgot my promise to Fancy & was about to lock the shed door when Fancy nickered to me. She was standing at the gate patiently waiting for her time out. I told her Ok, you keep me honest! And back into the shed I went to fetch her halter and lead. On the way I was thinking to myself, I talk to this horse too much, she knows what I am telling her. I gotta stop talking soo much. LOL! I do love my sweet horse ♥

'C' had to visit his Trigger today. When we got there Trigg was across the creek. We called to him and he actually ran over. I think he thought it was supper time. 'C' gave Trigg a nice juicy apple. Trigg got himself a new nickname today. 'C' calls him Tigger now.

The rains held back and the winds were harsh, it was too cold to ride, but we had lovely weather this weekend.

Good morning vote!
I don't know what Fancy was up to yesterday morning, when I went out to feed her, she was acting like she was starving! I wondered what created that appetite. She was prancing between the gate and her food bucket , snaking her neck for me to come on with it, and doing a little pawing. What gives! Well anyway, she was happy for dinner time.

February 1st was the official day my son became the owner of Trigger. Trigger was my youngest brother's horse. My brother gave Trigger to my son because my brother is out of town working all the time. I created a page for Trigger and my son. I am still working on adding the pictures. If you have time please visit their page. I love the smiles on his face when he reads your comments:) Since I don't know how much longer Scotty will be staying with us, I deleted Scotty's page and added Scotty to the page with King Kong.
