How We Met
I had been looking for a horse for a long time. A good friend called me up one
day, and asked if I was still looking for a horse. She said her friend had a mare
that she needed to sell quickly. My friend bought her and told me that I could buy
her when I had the money. The first time I saw Skye, a palomino QH mare, she
was not too happy to see another human. No matter, she was pretty much my
dream horse, and I really wanted her. I bought her on February 25, 2011. I think I
was one of the happiest people on the earth. It would be a couple of months
before I would get to have that dreamed of first ride on my horse. In late May, I
would get that ride after a couple of days of training. I would go on to spend a
great part of the summer working with her daily. By mid-august, I was beginning
to see my dream come true in a stocky, little palomino mare. Skye was starting to
listen to me, and was willing to trust a human to take care of her. Over Labor Day
weekend, I took Skye to a the local county fair. We had a rough start to a couple
days of showing, but we came out of it with some ribbons. I think we both learned
a lot from it. Things where going good until October, when we had a week long
battle with colic. It was a long and scary, but she made it through okay. I am
looking forward to what the coming year will bring.

I planned on working with Fancy today, but the rains came in. She has shed her winter duds and she is slick and shinny. I guess I will get new photos after she has a bath. Trigger is slick and shinny too.
Mother's day the neighborhood kids came to visit Fancy and Trigger. The children gave them treats and pulled grass. Trigger is still quite aloof. I wonder if anyone ever gave him treats before we got him. He acts like they just rode him hard and put him up wet. Once you catch him, he is so sweet though.

♥♡♥ Yep, grey skies changed my plans yesterday morning! I did spring cleaning till nearly 12:00! I ate lunch, and then brushed Deacon and Rocket-fly sprayed and turned them out. I got Whiskey next and bathed him! He looked so pretty...after that I was tired, plum pooped!! So I relaxed and watched them graze. It will be a few days before I can ride around my home area due to the rains! Come visit me, ♥ Whiskey ♥ & ♥ Deacon ♥.

GOOD MORNING, LEFT VOTES FOR ALL, TO THANK YOU FOR YOURS. This is where Sterly's story takes a bit of a twist. FF almost 4 years, we are still at the boarding barn, Sonya is now in University, I still ride 4x a week. I started to notice a slight hesitation from Sterl that was new, she did not want to go forward, at first it was mild, and I could push her thru it, but it got worse. She would actually do a small buck and a very tiny rear when I asked for forward. This was so out of character for her, but ever her resistance was polite, like she was trying to get my attention, she did. Believe me when I say there were lots of suggestion from folks that observed us, most thought that it was behavior and that I was not strong enough and I was letting her get away with it, one woman told me I had to beat her hard enough to make a welt on her skin, that would smarten her up!!!. GOOD MORNING MY FRIENDS,I would like to continue with Sterl May's story, thanks for reading them and commenting on them, because she is 30 and retired, it is also fun for me to remember the early years. THANKS FOR THE VOTES AND SUPPORT. All was well at the barn, Sterly's retraining was in full swing, I still leased Fool Kat, so I was a pretty busy girl, 2 horses to ride 4x a week and the barn was 40 minutes from home, a full time job, a house and husband to take care of plus 4 cats and a dog(Nicky) that I did agility with. The young couple that owned Fool Kat were pregnant and building a new house, they had no time for her but, did not want to let her go. So I was a perfect solution for them. Unfortunately, the baby arrived and the house was ready and they were ready to take her home. I had leased her for almost 2 years, I had Sterly but still it was a sad good by. Fool Kat was 23 when I started her lease, I kept in touch after they moved her home, she was basically a pet, she died quietly at 32. Had some Sadie time today. We both need it everyday. It's getting hot here, so I didn't ride. I put the halter on her and walked her off the property. She was a little nervous, so we took it slow, stopping when she needed to to look around and see that she was okay. Neighborhood dogs were barking at us. She walked a little fast on the way back to the house. Had to keep stopping her to slow her down. She loved it. Going to walk her more often to get her use going off the property. Going to work up to riding her. Last time I rode her off the property, she was nervous and wanted to fight me. She should trust me more now. Hugs and a vote. i rode buttercup. worked on walk/canter transitions. she gave one buck then worked out of it. my little rider fell off into a manure pile when smooch spooked! i felt bad for her because i usually drag the arena since the horses spend most of their day out there. didn't have time though. she was a good sport about it anyway. GOOD MORNING, here it is day 16 already. WE LEFT A VOTE FOR YOU, and a big thanks for the wonderful support. Being a pretty new horse owner, I had sort of thought once I get the first year under my belt, I'd be good to go....Silly me, aren't we ALWAYS learning from them. One thing is for sure, if all horses were like STERL MAY, everyone would have a horse. By now she is pretty much the "sweetheart" of the barn. The owners loved her 'cause she was easy to handle, never caused a fuss and I was there regularly(every chance I had). One morning, Sterl was in the aisle cross ties, I was grooming her and Margaret was touring a new prospective boarder, they got to us and Margaret says "this is Sterl May, she is Standardbred, this horse jumps" as they walked past, I heard the guy say "nice butt!!!" Went out to check on Sadie when I got home from work last night. She'd torn her fly mask off. It lasted 10 days. Hope to someday move away from the egg ranch. The flies are horrible. Thanks for listening to my stories of Sterl May, I guess by now you can see just how special she is to us. The trail ride was bad, but there were tons of great stuff that happened at "the barn" One morning I had just finished my ride and we jumped a few little jumps. I had turned Sterl loose in the arena to roll. As I waited for her, one of the other boarders came in with a friend. She introduced me and said her friend just came for the visit to watch her ride. I told them I was almost done, I'd be out of the way in a few minutes. I couldn't help notice that the friend was REALLY looking at Sterly, of course I thought because she is sooooo beautiful. As I got ready to leave the arena, I called "come on Sterl May, let's go" the friend says, "what did you call her? Is she a Standardbred?" "she said, I'm K. V. this horse was born on my Dad's farm, OMG, wait till I tell Dad that I saw her, she looks great, do you jump her? he will be so happy to hear that she is alive and well", we both cried a few happy tears, what a small world, what a great horse. After that day, I made sure that I let Mr. V know every year or so that Sterly was indeed alive and well. i rode sing for an hour last night. she was very good. she tends to cough and blow a bit at first, due to the dust. she's 19 now and has never done that before but i guess it goes with age. peek is doing okay. she coughs after she eats the low starch pellets. we're all coughing around here. she's not been ridden much these past 3 months. i'm going to have my little saturday rider rider her. :) Come visit me, Sing & Herd.

2216 SKYE! Hey we are all busy, no worries here!
Long day of work from 6 AM to 5 PM. Came home and helped our (still without his vehichle for towing) neighbor unload his horse stables manure,etc. Took only 10 minutes but getting ridiculous. I claim ANKA for mine after all the loans,LOL! A tired vote for you and please vote Anka for her HOTD! Also heard from Thailand and DARLING is doing well on his meds for his perspiration problems and enjoying his ocean rides and hosing down with carrots cut & cleaned to eat! Thanking you all with a vote today. We were really enjoying life together at the barn. I love having the guys home but I have always missed the camaraderie of other riders support. Sterly was now jumping small courses, mostly xrails but also some verticals. We had advanced to the outdoor ring. One evening, late spring I was at the barn and had just started my warm up when a couple of the other riders came in and said "we are going on a trail ride, want to join us" We had not done that yet, so I thought OK, sounds fun.....WRONG...Sterl May thought there was something spooky behind every tree, bush, rock, everything was a monster. She just could not settle, so I could not settle. The other riders are like, she'll be fine come on. So I hang in, we struggle along, Sterl on high alert, snorting all the way. Just then we see ahead of us in the field a dozen or so cows and everyone is like HEE HAW, LETS GET 'EM. I'm like, NO. STERL JUST FREAKED...they all took off, left us there, me scared to death, Sterl just dancing and prancing. So I did what any chicken would do, I got off and we walked back to the barn. I was just fuming, nice friends, don't ever ask me to go on your stupid trail ride again, everyone had a big laugh on us, it was all soon forgotten, but we never went on another trail ride again. I hope all of you moms had a beautiful Mother's Day. I had to work, but didn't mind. Being a mom and loving my sons and they loving me in return is what makes it so special. An emotional week this week. My oldest son, a Msgt in the Air Force, leaves the end of this week for 3 years in Germany. He and his oldest son celebrate their birthdays this week, too. Howdy ♡ we missed you!
♥♡♥ Beautiful weekend! Whiskey and Deacon were awesome as usual! I often wonder if Deacon had an excellent rider with so much more talent to teach-how far could he go. He is so smooth and light in the mouth and he is so willing to try and do anything. I hope I am not holding him back from greatness…We BBQ’ed and just chilled other than my horsey time! So, now Sterl May is safely at the boarding barn, life is good. I HAVE MY OWN HORSE, I had to tell you all about Sonya because I never would have made it thru the training and frustration without her. It did not take long to see that Sterly knew NOTHING about being ridden, she had had someone on her back a handful of times, but trained she wasn't. She had no bend, no flexibility, she had no idea what aids were, her head was straight up and out, when she was confused which was often, she paced. That was her comfort zone. But, none of that mattered to me, she was mine, we would learn together. As lucky as I was to have Sonya, Sterly was lucky to have Doolie(Sonya's horse) his stall was across the aisle from her. And of course, when I rode, especially at first Sonya was always there. Sterly had this huge crush on Doolie and once in the arena, she would follow him anywhere. I kept Fool Kat for those times when nothing went right and I just wanted to ride and noT really work SO HARD at it. We started lessons with Sonya's coach, in the beginning it wasn't pretty, but like I said, we were both learning together. FANCY'S PERCEPTIONS: “A mother understands what a child does not say” (unknown)
Are you finally enjoying spring? We went out of town last night to help a friend. It was soo late when we returned I had to call it a night. Fancy is ready for fun. She lets me know she wants an outing by neighing to me when I go outside for any reason. I tried to get some help taking the cart out, but no help just yet. I am giving my mom flowers for Mother's Day, perennials that will come back for her to enjoy. She seemed to be happy about that. I am tired of being still and I am ready to get creative. LOL.

✞ I want to wish all you mom’s out there (human and horse) a wonderful Mother’s day! I am off this weekend so I will be phone voting and you know I don’t type much from my phone! I may haul out Saturday to ride Lake Whitney but I would be riding by myself ~ that actually sounds good to me….I will have horse time but will be BBQ’ing Sunday and watching the horses and chilling (it has rained 2 days so I can’t ride the property around the house). Sassy Miss Sadie's doing good. She's keeping her fly mask on, but has torn holes in it. I dumped her water trough out to clean it and found her old fly mask in it, again. While I filled the trough with fresh water, she blew bubbles in it. So silly. Heat's hitting triple degrees next week. Time to buy another misting system. ♥ I had a really nice day off that included horsey time. I saddled Deacon and rode for a few hours there on the property around our home. When we got back I bathed him from ears to hoofs! I really did the works; he looked so beautiful after his bath. I have a question for my HC friends: how do you wash your horses face? Do you use shampoo, or just water? I was just wondering because I use a wet towel with no shampoo. I do let the hose run on their forelock and I use my fingers to loosen dirt then I wipe the rest of their face & muzzle with a wet towel. we would love your support, please
Sterl May was born and raised on a small but successful STANDARDBRED farm not far from my home. Standardbred racing is very big in this part of Ontario. She was quite good at the track, but at 4 years old she got a respiratory virus that ended her racing career. Roxanne, the lady that I eventually bought Sterl's from worked on that farm. Because racing is a business and not a hobby, Sterly had to go. Roxanne remembers the morning she was told to get Sterl May ready for the market truck. Roxanne had known and cared for her for 4 years and could not bear the thought of her going to market, so she bought her on a whim. That night after work she trailered her to a friends house and said "I bought a horse can I keep her here for now" Sterly spent the next 6 years there playing with her two new pasture pals. Before I bought Sterl May(read her how we met story please),I used to lease a solid bred paint mare, at a local boarding stable not far from home. Her name was Fool Kat, I leased because as an adult getting back into riding, I wanted to be sure before I bought my own horse. The barn owners thought that I should buy a foal and raise it up. One of the other riders at the barn heard this and she said she knew of someone that had a horse for sale for not too much $$$ she mostly wanted a good home for this horse. The only thing was, she was a STANDARDBRED, that didn't mean anything to me. I went to meet her, and I will never forget the feeling I had when I walked into her paddock, she tuRned to look at me, THOSE EYES, THOSE BEAUTIFUL EYES, she still has those beautiful eyes, thanks for your support, we left a vote too. ✞ It hurts my heart to look at the HOTD today…that is no way to start a foal. Maybe old school does or use to but I am a total natural horseman believer. I hate that the baby has a bad start to its life-shame on that owner. I don’t know about the rest of you but I didn’t give congrats and I erased my blogged because it was not very nice what I wrote.

I'm exhausted! Just back to the trailer to bed down. Paige is going great, but it deep competition. Doing very well though. Both days started early and finished late. Should be on the road about really late afternoon, 4 or 5 pm leave time. Miss ya and HC, love ya Marion.
