No ride today, it was very chilly and windy :(

Does anyone remember reading last month, about a nationwide Ride to Remember Veterans during Veteran's Day weekend, Nov. 10-11, 2012? How would you guys like to have our own HorseChannel ride in honor of Veteran's Day? We can chose one day that we all will ride on, even if it is only for a few minutes or just to sit on the horse during the Veteran's holiday. Then we could share our pics from that day and share our story of the day. If you agree would Sunday November the 11 be ok for our ride date?

November is a time of thanks. Thanks should be part of our every day lives all year long. Let us be thankful for our friends and loved ones. Let us be kind one to another. Cruelty has no place among true friends.

Hi! Did you have a busy, fun weekend? What have you been up to?

I have been on the move, but I enjoyed it! Saturday morning, Fancy participated in her first parade! It was a really big homecoming parade, with lots of tight crowds and loud bands! Fancy was excited for the first 15 to 20 minutes, but after that she was very relaxed and was not bothered by bouncing children on the sidelines. In past years, I have ridden my previous horses in this parade, but I never got to participate in the tradition of riding around the football field before the game. I could not get my past horses onto the football field because they were afraid. Well yesterday, I did for the first time, ride around the football field, with my Fancy! Fancy even took the lead and she did that running walk at least half way around! It was so much fun! I will never forget the first time I got to ride around the football field!!!!! Oh, and to boot, the home team won their game!!!!!! I would like to believe Fancy gave them good luck when she went around the field. LOL!
Half way through the day all I could think of was how this has to be my best day ever with Fancy. And then I think to myself, I have had so many days that I thought were my best day ever with Fancy! Saturday morning, I lost my keys on the way out of town. The keys fell off the side of the trailer or the truck. But I found them completely mangled on the side of a busy street after 6 hours of being run over in heavy traffic. Even though I had the lost key problem, I still had that feeling of this being the best day ever!

Saturday night, our family attended our horseshow end of year banquet. This was our first time attending and I had no idea what to expect. So, I did not take my camera and I was very surprised to see Little Cowboy & Trigger won a good bit of awards. Little Cowboy was so excited to share the awards with Trigger, they used their new snaffle bit and new grooming kit tonight. He is going to save his new blanket for next years show season. Little Cowboy rode until dark, and I did get a few pictures tonight before it got too dark.

It was a lovely day until the rains came in. There was a long storm that recently ended. It feels really nice outside these days.
Trigger was blind in one eye before we got him. Monday his blind eye was very cloudy. Today the vet told me Trigger is fine long as he is in no pain. He is such a great kids horse. I hate that something happened to his eye and I pray that I can take good care of him from now on.

Please visit Sassy Sapphire #193884 and leave an encouraging word. From what I can tell, her blog to me says Sassy Sapphire's owner lost her father this past Sunday morning.

One of my friends was out last Saturday at one of the state parks riding and there was an accident. Her friend dismounted to help and her friend's palomino TWH walked off. They were on the news tonight asking for help to find the missing horse. Please pray that they find Jasmine in good health very soon.

magan, a 13 yr old former student, is helping me with horse camp this month. she quit english and is doing barrel racing now. i asked her if she'd like to ride buttercup a few times a week to exercise her. she came the past few mornings to help. i may try to use buttercup in my camp next week. we'll see how she settles into it. she just likes to trot instead of walk. i'm teaching her to walk or halt when the outside rein is pulled. i rode sing this morning. just an easy hack. it's 80 at 7am so it's hard to work too much.

I dedicate this special occasion of our first show together to Joanna and Pixie Dust.

Fancy spent Friday night in a blanket with hopes she would be more clean than dirty come morning. The back clip had come undone, but that blanket did serve the purpose. Fancy only had one area on the side of her neck that was dirty. Once at the farm, I cleaned her dirty spot and her feet before introducing Fancy to the sandy arena. At first she was a little excited to be in a new place, but soon settled down. We only entered two classes this time. Fancy was fine, except she did not like horses standing behind her. When horses were lined up behind us, Fancy kept trying to spin around to see exactly what they had in mind back there.
We entered class 2 Adult Halter with 6 entries and Fancy placed 3rd!!!! This was the first time I ever won a ribbon with any horse!!! I was so excited. We didn't do so well in Class 3 as we placed 5th out of 5. However, We did leave with 2 ribbons from our first show!!!

Your responses to my blogs have encouraged me during the blogs that I have written. Sometimes it is hard when you miss someone that has touched you in a special way. I thank you so much.

I really hope you have enjoyed reading and learned some things about our Angel Joanna. Thanks for reading these blogs and taking into consideration how Joanna touched many lives during her short stay on earth. We never knew just how giving she was until it was too late.

Be kind, be sweet, be loving to one another, because we don't know what a person is struggling with from day to day and we all have struggles.

Joanna loved animals, but she had other loves in her life as well. Joanna was loved by not only her personal family and HorseChannel friends. I learned that Jane Seymour, star of Dr. Quinn Medicine Woman, was a very personal close friend that paid several visits to Joanna. You see, people of all walks of life could benefit from knowing such a loving & kind spirit.

Joanna often mentioned Dancing With The Stars in her blogs. When Jane was on Dancing With The Stars I don't think Joanna would have missed a single show. Joanna has managed a fan website for Jane's Dancing With The Stars partner, Tony Dovolani and Karina Smirnoff. Joanna spent her last evening watching Dancing with the stars. ONLY NOW, I know how important the very thought of dancing must have been to Joanna. I bet the first thing she did when she arrived in Heaven was to dance. Something that so many of us take for granted. I hope that sometime today you will stand on your feet when you hear your favorite song or hum a tune to yourself and dance a few steps in honor of our Angel Joanna.

I hope through these blogs you can understand how unique Joanna was and the way she inspired me to try my best to be a better person. We all experience turbulence in our lives. But this young lady was able to look past the turbulence in her life with an amazing desire to share life and love with others. In spite of her many health issues, Joanna was a blessing to those that knew her.

Sometime in 1991, Joanna came across 2 Shetland ponies for sale in a want ad. Both ponies were purchased by her family and given to Bloomfield Hills School Farm. Joanna named the ponies Tinkerbell & Pixie Dust. Joanna helped her mom create and teach 'LOVE-A-PONY', an afterschool and summer class for children. For seven years Joanna was with her ponies almost every day. It has been over 19 years since creating LOVE-A-PONY, and I have read that this pony class is still being taught this very day.

Joanna's was confined to her bed the last 9 years of her life, during which Pixie Dust was allowed to visit Joanna at her bedside. Joanna also made friends all across the world with the use of her computer, thanks to her dad for building a stand that allowed her to safely use the computer while lying down.

Pixie Dust at 21 years old, has joined Joanna in Heaven. I have read that this date was sometime around or on the 27 of February, 2012. I can only imagine the joy felt during that reunion.

Joanna was extraordinary. Always thinking of how she could help others, even through the use of her ponies. She loved unconditional and she reached out to others, even when she needed to be reached out to.

Pixie Dust, belonged to our Facebook pal and HorseChannel member, Joanna Wicke. Joanna was loved by all who knew her. She was always positive and uplifting to others. Joanna welcomed Fancy and I to HorseChannel with unbelievable love and daily support. After a disturbing disappearance of Joanna, Sadie's owner, Joyce informed us that Joanna had passed away in her sleep at the tender age of 34 on September 23, 2011. It was only then that her many health conditions were revealed. Even though being confined to her bed for the past 9 years, Joanna never once revealed a single pain to us. What a remarkable YOUNG person to have as a friend.
It was in 1991 that Joanna & her mom purchased Pixie Dust to share with the Bloomfield Hills School Farm. For 7 years Joanna helped her mom create & teach Love-A-Pony, an afterschool & summer class for children.

Dropping by with mini votes tonight. I was hoping to get some blogging time but it was not to be. I did get Pippin time though and he's doing great.

Well, almost great. Yesterday I drove him about 4 miles. That was fun! But the day before I was jogging with him and he got excited. He put his nose between his legs, did a little twist and broke into a canter. However he must have misjudged something because he had hardly taken two steps when he fell flat on his nose which started to bleed.

Not to worry though, it's just a scratch. I think he was more embarrassed than anything. And he did NOT want me to spray it with Scarlex. He has lightning reflexes. Even though the nozzle was right up against his nose several times not one bit of spray hit its target! I can't move that fast!

Well, I guess I did blog after all! Sorry, it has to be c/p tonight though. I do need to go to bed at some stage. Early morning awaits me!

Fancy Queen of Heart Month is blowing a heart vote in your direction this beautiful Monday morning.

We thank Joey, Ginger, and Angel Betsy for suggesting us doing the Black History blogs this past few weeks. I enjoyed this project, it was fun to share some of my most favorite horsey characters with you guys. I appreciate the comments and responses we received.

'C' & I trailered Trigger home Saturday morning. 'C' led Trigger to the trailer, however once Trigg saw that he was leaving he pitched a fit for King Kong. King Kong was so busy eating grass, he had no cares for Trigger's plight. Once loaded Trigger was just fine. He didn't like the idea of a bath, but it was fun cleaning him up. After his baths we take him walking and let him graze while he dries.
Sunday evening, Trigger and Fancy were turned out together for the first time. To my surprise, Fancy is not even mean to Trigger, not at all. She lets him walk anywhere he wants to, lets him eat her hay and she even eats with him. However, she does stay in between Trigger and I. I was patting Fancy on the side of her neck and Trigger wanted a pat to. He walked towards me and Fancy ran him off. He looked so pitiful. I think after a while she will allow him to come to me too, because Trigger is the very first animal in our yard that Fancy is not very mean to. I wonder if she is nice to him because she remembers him from last summer when we visited the farm, he visited us, and we went riding together.
I was very tired Sunday night. I did get my profile photos changed, then I was off to bed.

Lawson-Kelly, is a non-profit community-service organization, developed and operated by African-American female equestrians whose mission is to encourage and empower inner city youth toward positive and successful lives through the use of horses. This female group of skilled equestrians have delighted crowds wherever they go. They have appeared in parades, rodeos and horse shows all across America. They have the proud honor of being the first female African-American female Equestrian organization to have been invited to the Tournament Of Roses Parade, in Pasadena, California, 1990, and 1991. Ebony Horsewomen members have appeared in the Martin Luther King, Jr. Parade, in Atlanta, Georgia, as well as the Bill Pickett Invitational Rodeo circuit, just to name a few appearances. Additionally, the State of Connecticut Legislature proclaimed EHI "Goodwill Ambassadors and declared Connecticut to be the official home of the Ebony Horsewomen. Twenty-three years ago, EHI was founded upon the knowledge and belief in the healing power that horses give to youth. Willie Simms, born 1/16/1870, near Augusta, Georgia, U.S.—died 2/26/1927, Asbury, New Jersey), 1 of only 2 African American jockeys (the other is Isaac Burns Murphy) 2 have been elected 2 the National Museum of Racing’s Hall of Fame in Saratoga Springs, New York.
Simms began racing in 1887 & became the most successful rider 2 adopt the short stirrup since the antebellum slave & rider Abe Hawkins. The short stirrup lifts the rider over the horse’s withers, allowing the animal better balance. In 1895 Simms became the 1st American jockey 2 win in England, where sportswriters referred 2 him as a “monkey on a stick.” The short stirrup earned more esteem after the white American jockey Tod Sloan used it 2 win English races in 1897, & it came to be known as the “American seat.”
Simms won the Belmont Stakes in 1893 & 1894, the Kentucky Derby in 1896 & 1898, & the Preakness Stakes in 1898; he is the only African American 2 have won all of the Triple Crown classics. Simms was the leading American jockey (on the basis of number of wins) in 1893 & 1894. He retired in 1901 with 1 of the best lifetime winning percentages in the sport, 24.8.

Fancy is leaving a vote & the story of a man who became famous for his contribution to a rodeo favorite known as bulldogging. Please enjoy reading our Saturday blog ♥

FANCY'S PERCEPTIONS,Black Cowboys!:
Images of black cowboys are scarce in popular culture, giving the false impression that people of color were not among the men and women who settled the West. By the end of huge cattle drives of cowboy legend, at least 5,000 black men had worked as cowboys. Historians estimate an average crew included two or three black cowboys.

William (Will, Bill) Pickett was a legendary cowboy from Taylor, Texas of black, white, and Indian descent, born December 5, 1870. In March 1932, Pickett tripped while roping a stallion and fell under the horse, which kicked him in the head. For 11 days he clung to life with a fractured skull. April 2, 1932, he died in a hospital in Ponca City, Oklahoma. Bill Pickett was inducted into the Rodeo Hall of Fame, Oklahoma City, in 1971, the first black rodeo athlete to be so honored. At the Cowboy Hall of Fame, these words are inscribed to Pickett's memory:
Like many men in the old time West
On any job he did his best
He left a blank that's hard to fill
For there will never be another Bill.

He was also honored in 1994 by The United States Post Office, who issued a postage stamp honoring Pickett as part of its "Legends of the West" series. There is also the Bill Pickett Invitational Rodeo held each year since 1984 in his honor.

Bill noticed the bulldogs capture stray steers by biting them on the lip and he thought why couldn't he do that. Pickett's method for bulldogging was biting a cow on the lip and then falling backwards. His method eventually lost popularity as the sport changed into steer wrestling that is practiced in rodeos today.
Riding his horse, Spradley, Pickett came alongside a Longhorn steer, dropped to the steer's head, twisted its head toward the sky, and bit its upper lip to get full control. That's how Pickett's technique got the name "bulldogging." As the event became popular among rodeo cowboys, the lip biting became less popular until it disappeared from steer wrestling. Bill Pickett, however, became an immortal rodeo cowboy, and his fame has grown since his death.
Bill Pickett became known for his tricks and stunts at local country fairs. In 1905, Pickett joined the 101 Ranch Wild West Show that featured the likes of Buffalo Bill, Cowboy Bill Watts, Will Rogers, Tom Mix, Bee Ho Gray, and Zach and Lucille Mulhall.

What a cold & windy day in NC! I did spend a bit of time today cleaning Fancy's corral. I was on my way into the shed and Fancy nickered to me. I know the look, she wants time out. I actually promised her I would give her time out when I finished putting my yard tools away. The wind was blowing so hard when I came out of the shed that I forgot my promise to Fancy & was about to lock the shed door when Fancy nickered to me. She was standing at the gate patiently waiting for her time out. I told her Ok, you keep me honest! And back into the shed I went to fetch her halter and lead. On the way I was thinking to myself, I talk to this horse too much, she knows what I am telling her. I gotta stop talking soo much. LOL! I do love my sweet horse ♥

'C' had to visit his Trigger today. When we got there Trigg was across the creek. We called to him and he actually ran over. I think he thought it was supper time. 'C' gave Trigg a nice juicy apple. Trigg got himself a new nickname today. 'C' calls him Tigger now.

The rains held back and the winds were harsh, it was too cold to ride, but we had lovely weather this weekend.

Fancy is happily running around in the yard being her usual busy self.
Trigg is hanging out with King Kong. You would think they were siamese twins. Trigg can be hard to catch, but once you get him, he is just fine.
'C' wants to bring Trigg home. I will need to leave him at the farm for a while to allow my body and our yard to heal.
We are expecting winds & light rains this weekend. I will try to let 'C' visit Trigg in between showers. We shall see.

My little C. read his blogs last night and he went to bed with the biggest smile on his little face as he thought of his Trigger. He saw his page this morning before school, and he asked me to tell everyone Happy Valentines and Thanks for HOTD. He is very excited to spend some time with Trigger. He wanted to visit the farm Thursday after school but it was not a good time. I plan to take him to the farm today after school.

Looking over Fancy's most recent blogs, I see "Congrats'. Ok, Fancy had HOTD in October. It dawned on me, today is February 1st. I checked and Fancy is Feburary HOTM. Fancy does have a kind and loving heart, so I think she will do a great job as Queen of February.
I am so thankful for HC friends. You are much more than friends. You are our horsey family. Thanks for understanding when I humanize Fancy. You don't criticize. You allow me to share my love for her. And in return, You share the love you have for your horse with me.

How are you doing? And how is your Dad? I sure hope he is steadily regaining his strength and spirit. I know it's been over a month since I blogged properly and I'm sorry about that. I hope the new year is going well for you. I wanted to stop by and wish all my friends a happy new year but our year started out very very sadly and I haven't been able to bring myself to spread the harsh news.

Have I mentioned Acorn, our squirrel, to you before? We raised her as a baby. On New Year's Eve she was run over by our neighbours. Our driveway is the right of way to several neighbours. I still miss her. She was such a cutie and so very smart and still quite tame. I'm also angry because one shouldn't be such a careless driver. Especially in the middle of a forest on someone else's private land.

It was just so awful. At 1.5 years old she was in the prime of her life and we were prepared to have her around for at least another 14 years. And her first babies would have been born this spring! We miss her.

And then, as if our year hadn't started out badly enough, we also lost one of our kitties. She was getting close to 17 but still seemed healthy enough to go on for a few more years. She took a sudden turn for the worse and now she is gone. Her name was CC and she has a profile on the Cat Channel, 66957. Acorn is also on the SAC at 188686.

She was really good friends with my special Tiny Girl (dog) who died a couple of years ago. It feels to me like I lost my last living link to her. I like to think of them together again.

I hope your year started out a lot better than mine! Pippin is doing great. I don't know what I'd do if something like that happened to him. I don't even want to think about it. How are you and the horses in your life?

Here's a vote for you and I'll try to be a better blogger. But don't hold your breath!

P.S. I would love for you to see the tribute, Remembering Barbara. It is on YouTube. I haven't had any success getting it on HC yet.

I am back on HC and hope everybody had a good Christmas and a Happy New Year!! I had a great Christmas!! I got leather boots, helmet, helmet cover, a flashing for one of my bridles, gloves, and a pair of muck boots (That is just my horse related stuff). I also got to go and see and ride my old farm horse and he was wonderful!! Last week I didn't get to spend much time with Fancy. When I was picking her hooves she turned her head towards me. I thought she was trying to see what I was doing, but she laid her head on my shoulder. That was the first time she had ever laid her head on my shoulder while I cleaned her hooves. I guess she missed me a little. I missed her too :)
The ground is soaked from the hard rains of this day. However it does not feel like winter in NC yet. I know those cold days will be here soon enough.

The rain lasted for 3 days. The corral's so messy. Going to take a while to dry out. I let the girls out and spent some time with them Thursday. I think Sadie's jealous. She bullies Star when I'm around. Trying to get her to stop it. She understands some things, like a firm no, but has to be in the mood to listen. Big butted brat, but a pretty one. Love and a vote.

Sorry I've been away from the computer so long!
Is it snowing in Davisburg? I can't wait for riding-in-the-snow season, although it probably won't happen here in Illinois until after the new year. Until then, I just keep watching Luna's winter coat get fuzzier and shaggier! Horses look so huggable when they are fuzzy!

i posted a photo of my attempt at making the carrot wreath that i read about here on HC. there's a pic of smooch and the rider who brought the carrots for her lesson. he got to eat them afterward. he was very dainty about it. i'm going to post video of him eating it next week.
the video of my horrible dressage practice ride is up. you can see how resistant and stiff buttercup is. :)

Hi guys, my girl Fancy is leaping by with a vote. She is so happy to be out of that stall that she rolled in the mudd and now her right side is covered with mudd! I love my muddy, spoiled horsey.

Let us remember our HC angels as we end this year. It has been extremely tough to lose HC pals, both human and equine. Life is short, loss is permanent. I pray we become better people each day.
