We are leaving for a camping trip this afternoon. Our family rarely goes camping so it should be fun.
Sierra has been doing really well with her training. I have been working on loping her in circles and figure eights. She isn't nearly as lazy now and is much more responsive to what I ask her to do. I used to have to work to keep her loping in a circle but now she will lope for as long as I want until I ask her to slow down. Voice commands are coming in handy now, sometimes she will go into a lope just by me saying lope and she stops when I say whoa and sit back. She is not always consistent but she is getting better and better. I have been doing more ground work with Cherokee and it has helped him to be more responsive when I'm riding him. The little girls haven't been able to come for lessons the last couple weekends and I wont be here this weekend but hopefully they can come next Saturday. We still have not had any super hot this summer. Upper 70s/lower 80s for highs and the mornings and evenings are usually cool and beautiful. We haven't gotten very much rain and we are pretty dry.
Have a great weekend!

Yesterdays riding lesson with the little girls went well. They both wanted to ride at the same time so I saddled both Cherokee and Dakota for them to ride. They were both good boys and behaved themselves. The little girls had a lot of fun and didn't want to leave when it was time to go! They liked Cheyenne too, thought she was very pretty and wanted to ride her too. Nope she's too young I told them! Not much going on today, it finally got hot out and I got to lounge in the pool for a while. Supposed to be hot tomorrow too so I am going to try to get some riding in in the early morning. I rode Sierra this morning and she did great, probably our best ride yet. We worked on lots of circles and figure eights at a jog and I got her to lope a complete circle. She is doing great!

When Warrior finally passed away at his home stables in 1941 at the incredibly old age of 33, he was fittingly granted an unprecedented obituary in The Times, under the title The Horse the Germans Couldn’t Kill. My grandfather lived on until 1947 but Warrior’s passing affected him greatly. Years later I found a touching entry in his diary on the day that Warrior passed which simply read, “To quote Byron, I do not believe that he can be denied in heaven the soul that he held on earth.”

So I’m proud that my telling of the story has helped that soul to live on. Because, without doubt, Warrior was simply the greatest horse that ever lived.

Todays story is about a Thoroughbred horse named Warrior-a real life war horse(as told by Brough Scott.)

The incredible story of Warrior, the real-life War Horse, has long been a legend in our family.
Bred by my grandfather General Jack Seely in 1908, a couple of miles from his home at Yafford on the Isle of Wight, no horse and rider can ever have been through such a sustained series of adventures. They walked off the boat together at Le Havre in 1914 to join the Western Front, and cheated death a thousand times, surviving all four years of the war from Ypres to the Somme, Passchendaele and Cambrai before returning home where they continued to ride on together.
I’ve always thought it rather sweet and poetic that this sturdy bay thoroughbred gelding was christened Warrior because from the peace and tranquillity of the Isle of Wight where he grew up, he remarkably went on to become one of the greatest warriors of all time.

More on Warrior tomorrow...hope you all have a great day!

Because of his many varied coat colors and patterns, the Paint Horse probably has been called by more names than any other horse. Dating back to the earliest Paint Horses in Arabia, the Moslem called him a kanhwa, which meant blotched with white and chestnut or black. In India a Paint Horse was a pulwahri, meaning a white horse that "flowers" with black spots, and in Spanish his name was derived from the word pintado, meaning painted or mottled.

The cowboys applied such names as piebald, skewbald, calico, overo, spotted, pinto and old paint. Generally, piebald horses were black and white, calico horses were roan and white, and skewbald horses were bay, sorrel, or dun with white. Among the ranch hands there were mixed views on the ability of a Paint Horse. As in every breed there were superb performers and mediocre ones. Those who rode one, owned one, or worked one knew that most Paint Horses possessed action as quick as any horse of their time. They were willing to give credit where credit was due.

By 1700 the sport of horse racing was well established and had spread throughout Maryland, Virginia, and the Carolinas. In the beginning "short" races for distances up to a quarter-mile were popular among the plantation owners and backwoods settlers. As Thoroughbred horses entered the American scene, longer courses were laid out in major racing centers for racing "pedigreed" horses. The Thoroughbred became the gentleman's flat-racing breed, and the little Quarter Horse followed the western migration. In the cattle country of the American West the Quarter Horse met with the mustangs and Spanish cow horses. Their blood and qualities naturally blended well. By the time the Quarter Horse reached Texas in the middle 1800's, the Spanish horses had been working cattle for over three hundred years. The mingling of the blood of the eastern Quarter Horse and the Spanish cow horse created a western stock horse with the physical stamina of the mustang, the flesh and muscle of the Quarter Horse, and the cow sense and fighting bull sense of the Spanish cow horse. The racing blood from the Quarter Horse proved to be just what was needed to produce the dependable cow horse that virtually "won" the west. In the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries the western stock horse was an "all-purpose horse" who could do his work handling vast herds of cattle and in his spare time run a matched race at one of the local brush tracks. And where was the Paint Horse when the western stock horse was born? He was hazing cattle out of the mesquite thickets, bringing up strays during the roundups, and taking part in the bulldoggings and calf ropings alongside his solid-colored brothers and sisters. Stock horses were of many bloodlines and of every color.

The show had been held annually for a thousand years, and in the past had always been won by an Arab horse. In the words of Anthony A. Amaral, writing of this famous race:

Slightly over one hundred horses started on the ride from Aden. The great caravan of skilled Arabian riders rode their most prized mounts. They were spirited, accustomed to the difficulty of the sands, accustomed to the sun that sprayed exhausting heat upon them. Even among the mass of mounted horsemen, Hopkins stood out with parti-colored, 950 pound Hidalgo from the American plains.

Hopkins held Hidalgo at a steady pace as they made their way through the dry heat and over sandy soil. The march progressed to the Persian Gulf and up toward Syria and then along the border of Iraq and Arabia. Each day the riders started with the sun, following it until they were marching into it. Horses dropped by the way, some exhausted, some lame. At the end of the first week, the scarcity of water and the meager diet the horses were forced to exist upon in the barren country had culled the inadequate horses. The strung line of riders dwindled daily.

Entering the second week of the grueling trek, Hopkins made his move and started to pass the other desert riders. In the wake of the sand kicked up by Hidalgo, treasured Arabian horses of the Bedouins fell farther and farther behind, while Hidalgo kept to a steady pace.

We are happy to report Sterly looks good this morning, we left votes. I hate when she is off, she is so easy to read, so is Charlie. I realize that even a mild gas colic is upsetting to their systems and it takes a couple of days to get everything straightened back out. Because she is generally pretty healthy, just the usual "old age" stuff, I have always thought that if something takes her from me, it will likely be colic. So I have had a couple of real bad days too... We do what we can, nature takes care of the rest. Have a wonderful Easter, Love Donna Lee

No ride today, it was very chilly and windy :(

Does anyone remember reading last month, about a nationwide Ride to Remember Veterans during Veteran's Day weekend, Nov. 10-11, 2012? How would you guys like to have our own HorseChannel ride in honor of Veteran's Day? We can chose one day that we all will ride on, even if it is only for a few minutes or just to sit on the horse during the Veteran's holiday. Then we could share our pics from that day and share our story of the day. If you agree would Sunday November the 11 be ok for our ride date?

November is a time of thanks. Thanks should be part of our every day lives all year long. Let us be thankful for our friends and loved ones. Let us be kind one to another. Cruelty has no place among true friends.

Hi! Did you have a busy, fun weekend? What have you been up to?

I have been on the move, but I enjoyed it! Saturday morning, Fancy participated in her first parade! It was a really big homecoming parade, with lots of tight crowds and loud bands! Fancy was excited for the first 15 to 20 minutes, but after that she was very relaxed and was not bothered by bouncing children on the sidelines. In past years, I have ridden my previous horses in this parade, but I never got to participate in the tradition of riding around the football field before the game. I could not get my past horses onto the football field because they were afraid. Well yesterday, I did for the first time, ride around the football field, with my Fancy! Fancy even took the lead and she did that running walk at least half way around! It was so much fun! I will never forget the first time I got to ride around the football field!!!!! Oh, and to boot, the home team won their game!!!!!! I would like to believe Fancy gave them good luck when she went around the field. LOL!
Half way through the day all I could think of was how this has to be my best day ever with Fancy. And then I think to myself, I have had so many days that I thought were my best day ever with Fancy! Saturday morning, I lost my keys on the way out of town. The keys fell off the side of the trailer or the truck. But I found them completely mangled on the side of a busy street after 6 hours of being run over in heavy traffic. Even though I had the lost key problem, I still had that feeling of this being the best day ever!

Saturday night, our family attended our horseshow end of year banquet. This was our first time attending and I had no idea what to expect. So, I did not take my camera and I was very surprised to see Little Cowboy & Trigger won a good bit of awards. Little Cowboy was so excited to share the awards with Trigger, they used their new snaffle bit and new grooming kit tonight. He is going to save his new blanket for next years show season. Little Cowboy rode until dark, and I did get a few pictures tonight before it got too dark.

Have a beautiful Autumn day ✞

FANCY'S PERCEPTIONS:
"The riding of young horses is an excellent nerve tonic." (Geoffrey Brooke)

Fancy leaves a good night VOTE 4 YOU :~)
Please vote Lady Aristocrat 232456 for HOTD
It was a lovely day until the rains came in. There was a long storm that recently ended. It feels really nice outside these days.
Trigger was blind in one eye before we got him. Monday his blind eye was very cloudy. Today the vet told me Trigger is fine long as he is in no pain. He is such a great kids horse. I hate that something happened to his eye and I pray that I can take good care of him from now on.

Please visit Sassy Sapphire #193884 and leave an encouraging word. From what I can tell, her blog to me says Sassy Sapphire's owner lost her father this past Sunday morning.

One of my friends was out last Saturday at one of the state parks riding and there was an accident. Her friend dismounted to help and her friend's palomino TWH walked off. They were on the news tonight asking for help to find the missing horse. Please pray that they find Jasmine in good health very soon.

Very Important Message from Logan #237047: Could you please spread the word that my wrist is in really bad condition and I can't vote for people today! It is swelled up pretty bad and moving it hurts! Please spread the word!

Have a blessed and peaceful night

magan, a 13 yr old former student, is helping me with horse camp this month. she quit english and is doing barrel racing now. i asked her if she'd like to ride buttercup a few times a week to exercise her. she came the past few mornings to help. i may try to use buttercup in my camp next week. we'll see how she settles into it. she just likes to trot instead of walk. i'm teaching her to walk or halt when the outside rein is pulled. i rode sing this morning. just an easy hack. it's 80 at 7am so it's hard to work too much.

FANCY'S PERCEPTIONS, in honor of Angel Pixie Dust's (profile 101958) May HOTM campaign for our Angel Joanna, ANGELS HAVE NO PHILOSOPHY BUT LOVE:
"If we were all like angels, the world would be a heavenly place." (Author Unknown)

I dedicate this special occasion of our first show together to Joanna and Pixie Dust.

Fancy spent Friday night in a blanket with hopes she would be more clean than dirty come morning. The back clip had come undone, but that blanket did serve the purpose. Fancy only had one area on the side of her neck that was dirty. Once at the farm, I cleaned her dirty spot and her feet before introducing Fancy to the sandy arena. At first she was a little excited to be in a new place, but soon settled down. We only entered two classes this time. Fancy was fine, except she did not like horses standing behind her. When horses were lined up behind us, Fancy kept trying to spin around to see exactly what they had in mind back there.
We entered class 2 Adult Halter with 6 entries and Fancy placed 3rd!!!! This was the first time I ever won a ribbon with any horse!!! I was so excited. We didn't do so well in Class 3 as we placed 5th out of 5. However, We did leave with 2 ribbons from our first show!!!

Love From our herd to yours♥

FANCY'S PERCEPTIONS, ANGELS HAVE NO PHILOSOPHY BUT LOVE:
"The guardian angels of life fly so high as to be beyond our sight, but they are always looking down upon us." (Jean Paul Richter)

PLEASE READ, CORRECTION TO PREVIOUS BLOG: I made an error in dates listed in my blog. I also somehow accidentally lost Joanna's first name in some of my blogs.

The CORRECT INFORMATION is Joanna Helen Wicke January 1, 1977-September 23, 2011.

I guess I am not very reliable at 3:30 in the morning. I appreciate Marion and Indy calling this to my attention and I apologize for the error.

There are a few active HorseChannel members that remember Joanna. If you remember Joanna, PLEASE share a blog on Fancy's page. I would love to read what you have shared with Joanna during her short stay here.

Hi! I hope you are doing well today looking forward to a horsey weekend and celebrating this Easter weekend. We are in a 3 day stretch of cold rain & I am freezing :) We are not expecting warmer temps, but we do expect the rain to clear up this afternoon. Then we can have some fun.

Enjoy a Blessed Easter season

FANCY'S PERCEPTIONS, ANGELS HAVE NO PHILOSOPHY BUT LOVE:
"Sometimes even the flight of an angel hits turbulence." (Terri Guillemets)

MESSAGE FROM JOANNA'S SISTER APRIL 4, 2012: I just found the webpage on HorseChannel and it is so sweet. My parents and I are really appreciate of everyone's kind gestures, which mean so much to us. Thank you!!

Your responses to my blogs have encouraged me during the blogs that I have written. Sometimes it is hard when you miss someone that has touched you in a special way. I thank you so much.

I really hope you have enjoyed reading and learned some things about our Angel Joanna. Thanks for reading these blogs and taking into consideration how Joanna touched many lives during her short stay on earth. We never knew just how giving she was until it was too late.

Be kind, be sweet, be loving to one another, because we don't know what a person is struggling with from day to day and we all have struggles.

HorseChannel friends are the BEST!!!
Be Blessed ♥

FANCY'S PERCEPTIONS, ANGELS HAVE NO PHILOSOPHY BUT LOVE:
"We're all kissed by angels but some of us never think to pucker." (Terri Guillemets)

Joanna loved animals, but she had other loves in her life as well. Joanna was loved by not only her personal family and HorseChannel friends. I learned that Jane Seymour, star of Dr. Quinn Medicine Woman, was a very personal close friend that paid several visits to Joanna. You see, people of all walks of life could benefit from knowing such a loving & kind spirit.

Joanna often mentioned Dancing With The Stars in her blogs. When Jane was on Dancing With The Stars I don't think Joanna would have missed a single show. Joanna has managed a fan website for Jane's Dancing With The Stars partner, Tony Dovolani and Karina Smirnoff. Joanna spent her last evening watching Dancing with the stars. ONLY NOW, I know how important the very thought of dancing must have been to Joanna. I bet the first thing she did when she arrived in Heaven was to dance. Something that so many of us take for granted. I hope that sometime today you will stand on your feet when you hear your favorite song or hum a tune to yourself and dance a few steps in honor of our Angel Joanna.

I hope through these blogs you can understand how unique Joanna was and the way she inspired me to try my best to be a better person. We all experience turbulence in our lives. But this young lady was able to look past the turbulence in her life with an amazing desire to share life and love with others. In spite of her many health issues, Joanna was a blessing to those that knew her.
