How We Met

She is a rescue. They found her in a field with about four others. They had all been terribly abused & starved. Her feet where so long they had curled under. she was in awful shape. But my Sister got her & brought her back to wonderful condition. We gave her to my youngest niece for Christmas. They are bonded so well. She can go into her stall & lay down with her, but nobody else can she gets up & gives you a look that says why are you hear. She is not a morning horse. She hates to get up in the morning it is very funny. She has come a long way.

We have been having surprisingly low temps here this summer. Some days it feels more like fall! Right now its only 64 degrees and feels kind of chilly out. Not our typical hot, humid July weather! It looks like it may start getting warmer this weekend though. This morning Ethan woke me up at 4:00 am and said the horses are out! The gate was open for some reason and they were out grazing. I put some feed in a bucket and got them back in without any trouble. Last Saturday some people my aunt knows came to her place and their 2 little girls wanted to ride so I rode Dakota over for them to ride. They had a lot of fun and Dakota behaved himself. They will be coming out to my aunts every Saturday(they are keeping calves at my aunts) and their mom wants to pay me to give them riding lessons. So we will see how it goes! Any tips for what all I should teach them? I have done my 3 driving classes so now I need to wait 6 months and get my 40 hours of practice in before I can try to get my license. I drive to and from church and I am starting to enjoy driving. Got to go now, hope you all have a great weekend!

Hi Ya!
Riding this weekend? If so have a wonderful time and be safe.

We had another family look at Trigger yesterday. Then one adult person says, 'well he is not big enough for me' Then I ask "I thought he was for your children?" They tell me the children are in their family and will visit. So we still have Trigger. LOL.
I did sell my cart yesterday. The man used it yesterday evening. And he was very happy with it!

Have a very blessed weekend!

Whew today was the last day of drivers ed. I take my permit test on Monday. On Wednesday I gave Sierra a bath and rode her around the yard for a while. She was really good. Today it was bath time for Cheyenne, she was a muddy little pig! Tomorrow I'm hopefully going to give Cherokee a bath. It has been raining so much, it is kind of a daily occurrence. The ground is saturated! Next week looks to be nice though. Wishing everyone a great weekend!

I had a great ride and training session with Sierra yesterday. My sister came down to watch and she was impressed at how well Sierra is doing. I have started taking her out of the pasture and up around the barnyard. She stays calm around the cats, dogs, calves, pigs, and chickens but she is curious about them and likes to watch them. I gave Cheyenne a bath and shampooed her mane and tale, she is so soft and clean now. She still has a big stubborn patch of winter fur on her back. She is taking so long to shed out even though I brush her often. If it gets warm enough today I want to give Cherokee a bath. School is done for the year, such a relief! Hope your having a good week :)

The weather has been lovely here lately, I just love spring. The horses are finally almost all shed out and are starting to get shiny. Yesterday I had an early morning ride on Cherokee and then most of the rest of the day I helped my mom do yard work and gardening. In the evening I went to see Sierra and Misty and lunged Sierra. She did really good. She had gotten skinny over the winter but now that she is out on pasture she is filling out again. I cant wait to ride her again soon!

As General of the Canadian Cavalry, my grandfather was no shrinking violet. An undeniably brave man, he was a popular general. But it’s fair to say, not as popular as his horse. Warrior was simply a four-legged inspiration. There was a sense among the men that “if Warrior was OK, we’d be OK.” And my grandfather shared the troops pride in Warrior, because he felt he could never have earned their love and affection were it not for his horse.

This was no ordinary rider-and-horse relationship. They were incredibly close. If the General walked, Warrior would follow behind like a dog. You have to remember this was a horse he had bred and had ridden every day of his life, including some of the most pivotal moments of his existence so they had a bond like no other.

Thanks for your support!

More on Warrior:
It was evident from an early age that he had special qualities. My grandfather would take him down to the local beach and let the waves break on him. Most horses would normally shy away, but Warrior stood stock still while the water crashed on him. Instantly he knew this horse had an abundance of courage. And so it proved in the summer of 1914 when Grandpa had no choice but to take him to war.

Weeks later in the first major action of the war, at the Battle of Mons, a cluster of shells fell within yards of them. Any normal thoroughbred would have bolted in terror. But not Warrior. As my grandfather later wrote, “To my amazement, Warrior made no attempt to run away. He simply turned his head and unconcerned, looked at the smoke of the burst.” It’s evident that he never once shirked danger despite Grandpa, at the front, galloping around wearing a red General’s cap, making for a huge and obvious target.

I didn't get to ride Sierra over the weekend but I did have a nice long trail ride on Cherokee last night. Its raining today but supposed to be warm and sunny tomorrow so hopefully I can ride Sierra then.

Continuation from yesterdays story...
Then, Trashadeous was sold to Mitch and Debbie Zuckerman, longtime friends of the Horns. He remained at the Horns’ farm and continued his schedule of working thirty minutes to an hour, five days a week, and then getting two days of rest at turn out.

Trashadeous‘ first performance at the 1990 Quarter Horse Congress was not a sign of what was yet to come. In the ring he got confused and reared straight up. But even with this fault, he still managed such a wonderful performance that he placed third. His next debut at the NRHA Futurity was a little less disastrous. He placed second out of the 370 three-year-olds to earn a whopping $57,000.

Then came the Lazy E Classic in April 1991. It was the coming out of what this reining horse could really do. Bill Horn still believes it was the best run of his life. This continued with the horse placing first or second in nineteen of twenty-three showings from age three to age five, and included winning the NRHA World Championship and the Saddlesmith Award.

Happy Mothers Day!

Early Americans closely associated themselves with the horse. Horse racing was their sport, horse trading their delight, and horse breeding, but a slight necessity, was in some respects their challenge. Consequently, the appearance of light, trim "blooded" horses in England had tremendous effect on American horsemen and horse breeding. Following the pattern set by the English for improvement of their racing stock by infusing a generous amount of Oriental blood, settlers in the eastern colonies brought in horses of Barb, Arabian, and Turk breeding.

lmportations of Paint Horses were relatively few and were for the most part of the Hackney and French Coach lines, which were by and large indirectly descended from the early English Thoroughbred foundation sires, the Godolphin Barb, the Darley Arabian, and the Byerly Turk. The painted horses of this blood were showy animals with a natural gait, making them excellent harness horses.

Have a great Sunday.

I had an early ride on Sierra this morning. We worked on circles and figure eights at a walk and trot, and then around the pasture a few times. She was very good, she is getting more and more responsive. It doesn't take as much leg pressure to get her going as it used to and she also listens to my voice commands better.

On the sixty-eighth day of the ride Hopkins rode Hidalgo to the finish stone, leaving behind him three thousand scorching miles. The tough Paint Mustang was the winner by thirty-three hours over his nearest competitor. The only American Paint Horse in the history of Arabian endurance racing ever to win the historic race, Hidalgo did it, and did it on merit. In the eastern United States horses transplanted to the mainland from the islands off the Florida coast were called Chickasaws by the early English settlers. There was little difference in this breed of horse and the Spanish horses in the southwestern United States and Mexico. Both were descendants of sixteenth-century Spanish stock and were endowed with the same fine Oriental blood. The Chickasaw was of a more even temperament, but that can be attributed to his close association with man, while the Spanish cow horses and mustangs roamed freely in the rough, unsettled West. The early colonists acquired several Chickasaw mares and mated them with their own well-bred stallions imported from England and France in an effort to improve their using stock and to produce a running horse for short distances up to a quarter of a mile. This successful blending of blood formed the foundation of today's American Quarter Horse.

Sierra turns 3 today! I can still remember the first time I touched her soft little nose and I couldn't wait for her to be all grown up. How the time has flown! I plan to start riding her very soon, maybe today if it doesn't get so windy. I am excited!

An interesting story has been told of an Indian and his Paint Horse who played a part in the massacre at the Little Big Horn in 1876. The army under Custer went down in defeat before the nearly three thousand Sioux warriors who had gathered to protest the invasion of their buffalo lands. After the victorious warriors rode back to their camp, the only survivor on the battlefield was a horse called Comanche, whose rider had been Captain Myles W. Keogh of the Seventh Cavalry. Unknown to anyone at the time, one other horse survived, a tough, range-raised Indian pony belonging to one of the army scouts. The Pawnee and Arikara tribes have honored in a war-dance song a spotted horse who walked into the Arikara village alone some time after the battle, still wearing an army saddle with the reins up as if he had been ridden.

As Custer's Seventh Cavalry marched from Fort Lincoln, members of each company rode different-colored horses: A Company rode black horses, B Company rode bays, and C Company rode sorrels. The Arikara scouts rode army horses and their own ponies, which were mostly Paint. After the Sioux had their revenge at the Little Big Horn, there was mourning in the Arikara village for the three Arikara scouts slain with Custer. The song originated at that time and handed down from generation to generation refers to a young warrior and his spotted horse. The words of this song, translated into English mean: "Little Soldier's [the Arikara scout killed with Custer at the Little Big Horn] spotted horse has returned [home] alone." The horse they were singing about was the Paint Horse who walked all the way from the hard-fought battle and arrived early in the morning at his village, scarred, injured, and showing signs of a hard journey. The Arikaras knew the horse and knew how far he must have traveled. They also knew the young scout who did not return as Little Soldier, and today on a granite marker at the Custer National Monument in Montana listed under Scouts is the name Little Soldier.

Fancy's Perceptions: "The wagon rests in winter, the sleigh in summer, the horse never." (Yiddish Proverb)

Here is a vote. Have a peaceful night.

Thank Marion and Paige for the wonderful and informative video they posted on HC this week. I studied the video and today Fancy and I practiced for showmanship. I was very excited! At first Fancy was doing well. We were a bit awkward but we will get it right. There were a lot of children visiting their grandparents and the neighborhood was very busy. I think all the noise and Fatima took Fancy's attention today. We shall try again tomorrow.

Fatima saw Fancy's work out and she did not want any part of me today. Fatima ran from me so, I had to lounge Fatima so I could catch her. After I caught her, Fatima was good. I groomed her, put her bridle on and drove her from the ground. She is not good on walk command nor whoa. But today was the best day with her yet. And the more she fills out, the more she begins to look Arabian like. She has an Arabian face after all. Fatima acts like Trigger when he first came to live with us.

Good night.
