How are you doing? I am going to write a pure copy and paste message because I am so far behind with my HC blogs that you wouldn't believe it.

A lot has happened since I last blogged properly on here and I can't promise to be on as much as I would like.

Eddie has settled in really well. He and Pippin are great friends but boys will be boys and because of their giant size difference, 2000lbs vs 200lbs, they cannot be alone in the same field. So, Eddie has a pen within Pippin's huge day pen and they get at each other through the fence.

Eddie is the tall silent type and his previous owner has never heard him make a noise. Well, now that he's here he whinnies if we take Pippin for a walk and leave him behind. He nickers low and sweetly when Pippin is put in the pen near him. They are cute together.

We've had a couple of tough moments, health-wise, with both of them. Eddie had several episodes of choke earlier this year leading up to a major case which almost killed him. The vet actually thought he wouldn't make it and we were discussing the dreaded topic of carcass disposal…

Well, the long and short of it is, he's completely and absolutely healthy and looks the best he's ever looked. He's fit and shiny and has a spring in his step. That is, when he's not sleep walking which he'll do on a hot day like today.

3 weeks ago Pippin had surgery for the removal of 2 large enteroliths from his colon. They weigh about 3lbs and I've kept them as souvenirs. He's on the road to recovery and is also doing super well.

For a couple of months he was rapidly going downhill and we couldn't figure out what was wrong with him. Using a portable x-ray the vet discovered the stones. They are so huge that she actually screamed when spotted them on the radiograph. It's a wonder that he was still eating and pooping fine. Not sure how that was even possible.

Anyway, that's what's up here. I will try (really I will!) to write more often.

I hope you had a great weekend! Leaving a vote.

Come visit me, Eddie (In Loving Memory), Prince & Pippin (Gone too soon).

so good to hear from you! pigeon fever is also known as dryland distemper. it has nothing to do with pigeons and is called that because the classic abscess forms in the horse's chest area giving him a puffed chest pigeon look. it's passed from a bacteria that biting flies carry. i'm keeping smooch covered so that, hopefully, no fly bites him then goes and bites one of my other horses. if you google it you can find lots of info. it's normally not here in TX because we're humid. it thrives in dry climates. we're in a severe drought right now so it's moving in. neither of the vets that i use have seen a case here. i'll know for sure if it is truly pigeon fever when the culture gets in. it's not lethal and they get over it fairly quickly.
i'm headed out to feed and then do smooch's wound care. he's better with the separation from the others today. he just whinnied at them when they left for turn out and resumed eating the grass in my yard. i'm keeping him in my covered arena, then my yard for some grazing. the others go out into my pasture.

congratulations on your colt!
i've had a difficult and busy few days. the heat is 100 and i was outside doing horse camp and barn chores so you can imagine how hard that is! then, i haven't had time to blog everyone but some of you know via email that smooch came up with a swollen area on his right chest. i believe it to be pigeon fever and it's probably what hershey had on his belly area, we'll know for sure next week when the culture results come back. i thought it was going away but yesterday it was hard and he was walking with short stiff steps so i took him to the vet for it to be aspirated. now it's draining and he's really mad because he has to be separated from the herd until the wound closes. i have to squirt saline inside the incision until it closes, spray bleach water around the arena and i'm keeping a fly sheet on him to , hopefully, keep the flies from biting and spreading the blood from the wound. he's racing around and bucking when the horses go out so he's feeling much better now that it's open. it was about the size of a walnut. i posted a pic of hershey's area, smooch's chest and a pic of smooch as a foal just for fun! :)

O! thus be it ever, when freemen shall stand
Between their loved home and the war’s desolation.
Blest with vict’ry and peace, may the Heav’n rescued land
Praise the Power that hath made and preserved us a nation!
Then conquer we must, when our cause it is just,
And this be our motto: “In God is our trust;”
And the star-spangled banner in triumph shall wave
O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave! (The Star-Spangled Banner by Francis Scott Key)

We are getting our late vote in tonight.
Wow! I saw those gorgeous photos, what a nice baby!
The doggie in our photo is Hollie. I got her May the 5th 2011. Her mommy is a blue mearle Collie and her daddy is a solid black Australian Shepherd. She seems to take her body from her daddy and sometimes she appears to have a Collie head, but mostly she looks like the Aussie. I love the Collie long snout. Hollie's snout is not as long. Guess the Aussie just took over. LOL. How did you like the Aussies?

After finishing my work in the yard I enjoyed Fancy and Hollie for a while. Fancy is learning to be very good with Hollie. I wonder if it is because she knows I want her to like Hollie.

Sammi had her foal it is a beautiful "COLT"
our morning started out early this morning, I laid in bed and told my husband, "I suppose I should get up and go out to the barn, I have a feeling we have a foal out there." He groaned and rolled over the other direction. I went out to the barn, nope, nothing in there, I went out to the water tank, having noticed that three of the horses were out in the far pasture, then as I rounded the next corner by our loafing shed/shelter, I saw the other horses all standing around the door looking in, then as I looked I saw our Sammi standing over, looking down at a gorgeous little ?Red & White? or maybe a ?Chocolate & White? tobiano. Then with further attention to the little one, I noticed, YEP it's a little COLT!! Not what I wanted, but oh boy he is as cute as a bugs ear, as grandma used to say. Anyway we have been out in the barn from shortly after 6am until 5:30pm this afternoon. He is rally cute, but I need a break, food and sleep.

did sammi have her foal yet?
today marks the 38th anniversary of secretariat's record breaking run of the belmont that made him a triple crown winner! his record still stands.
also, it's helmet safety awareness day. HC has helmet facts and myths. some are interesting. i didn't know that horse riding head injuries are more frequent that motorcycle riding head injuries. or that you should replace your helmet after a fall or every 5 years, whichever comes first. i think it's time for a new helmet! may have had a fall in both the ones i use now...i can't remember!
i posted some pics from my bareback ride on buttercup last week. she was a good girl! so glad i stayed on. :)

John 17
“Father, the hour has come. Glorify your Son, that your Son may glorify you. 2 For you granted him authority over all people that he might give eternal life to all those you have given him. 3 Now this is eternal life: that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent. 4 I have brought you glory on earth by finishing the work you gave me to do. 5 And now, Father, glorify me in your presence with the glory I had with you before the world began.

"Love is unstoppable!!!"

GOD LOVE=John 3:16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish.

This is a 'cold wet day' vote from Fancy:) We were hoping to spend some time with the new horsey and get to name him this weekend. But I don't know if the weather is going to cooperate. It is very cold and rainy here, and is expected to continue through the weekend.
