Are mini horses smarter? Well, this is debateable because no scientific studies have been done. Ponies are often considered smarter than horses and the shetland pony makes up a large proportion of the genetics of the miniature horse. Personally I think that there are geniuses and dumb asses (pun intended) within all shapes and sizes of the equine world. Perhaps smaller equines evolved a smarter brain to cope with their size and their often very harsh environments. Setting aside assumptions, I do have to admit that Pippin is the smartest horse I've known, big or small. He never forgets a thing and that can be a bit intimidating because when I make a mistake I know he'll remember it! Here's a prime example. A couple of winters ago we had about 2 feet of snow. There was nothing for him to eat and we let him loose in our 4 acre yard so he could scrounge around for tidbits. At that time we had kale growing and it stuck up out of the snow. Pippin discovered it and decided that it was worth munching on. Of course, we had the kale because WE wanted to munch on it so I chased him off. Pippin ran off and dug around elsewhere in the snow for bits of food. A few minutes later he was back at the kale eating as fast as he could. I yelled at him and believe me, he turned up the speed and ate even faster. I grabbed him, put him back in his pen, and gave him his afternoon hay. End of matter. Right? Nope. A year later, yes, a whole year, I put him out to graze in the garden. He hates most vegetable plants, including kale, and will only eat them if he's desperate. He was unaware that I was keeping an eye on him and was very good. A couple of hours later I walked out to catch him and put him back in his pen for his hay and guess what he did! He took one look at me, looked at the kale on the other side of the garden, looked back at me, winked (okay, he didn't wink but he thought it!) and charged across the garden after the kale and started chomping away at it like he hadn't seen food all his life! The little stinker. He remembered that it made me mad and he was just teasing me. He doesn't even like it! And there was plenty of grass! I've never underestimated him after that incident. And when I'm teaching him he knows what to do immediately after being shown. He'll learn a new trick after a couple of tries. As long as I can make clear what I want he'll remember it. Talking of tricks, the featured video of the day is: Pippin, The Smart Miniature Horse. http ://ww w.yout ube.co m/wat ch?v=d sBPn toZCjE (Don't forget to remove the spaces!) Thank you so much for stopping by today on the first of the year, 1/1/11 and the first day of Pippin's run for horse of the month! I hope you all had a wonderful day celebrating New Year's and that you enjoy the rest of your weekend. Today's first mini fact! Miniature horses have uniquely small feet! Yes, it's true! And while that is an obvious fact unless you've met one you really can't imagine how small they really are. The first time I laid eyes on Pippin he was only 4 months old and what struck me were his teeny tiny hooves! Of course, they're bigger now but still at 2" in diameter they are mighty small. Miniature horses cannot be shod because the nails required to keep shoes in place would splinter the hoof wall. But, their hooves are much sturdier than their larger counterparts. Because minis are small their hooves take very little stress and they can not only trot on hard pavement without any adverse affects but can even gallop. A trim every two or three months keeps them in shape and they're good to go. Miniature horses that work as therapy or guide horses often wear horse sneakers. This keeps them from slipping on polished surfaces and stops their hooves from damaging delicate surfaces. Featured movie of the day: Dances with Horses http ://www .you tube.com /wat ch?v= ojFc JSyrpuU (Don't forget to remove the spaces!) Thanks again for your support and I hope to see you all the rest of this month. Leaving a vote of appreciation. P.S. I love your main photo! And thanks for noticing how pretty Pippin is.Come visit me, Prince (Rest in peace sweet Tiny girl.), Pippin (Tiny is forever in our hearts) & Eddie (Our BIG boy!).
