How We Met

I received Kody for my 16 Birthday. My family pooled the money together to get him for me, after I was deemed responsible enough. Especially after buying my own and taking care of Cattle. It was kinda funny because, most kids get a car for their 16 Birthday, but I got a Horse, Hehehe. He and I share the same birthday because, I don't know when he was born. He came from West Virginia and was bought at a sale barn by the previous owner. He's a Mystery..

Weather here is HoRrIbLe!!!! It's currently pouring here, and I swear the windows are going to have holes in them from all the rain hitting them. Sleeping may be hard for me tonight, but mommy says that the sound of rain puts her to sleep. :) She also has this thing that in the summer, she will sit on the boat and eat Oreos and listen to the rain and the fish slap their tails up against the side of the boat. Haha, WOL. We are supposed to get 3-5 inches here and it's not supposed to stop until Friday afternoon!! **sigh** (again...) Well, have a great night!!

Come visit me, ♥Riley, Boo, and Maddie too!♥.

Mini Digestion

Okay, so today's topic isn't very glamorous. A horse's digestive system is very delicate and when out of balance can cause great harm to the horse. An inbalance in food can cause laminitis, a painful swelling of the laminae of the hoof, which in turn causes chronic bouts with lameness and often consequentially, death. Colic (bloat) is another common illness that is very hard to treat and if not caught in time almost always results in death. There are numerous other feed related problems that can occur but these are the most common.

Unfortunately, miniature horses are especially prone to these two. Their very effective digestive system makes them prone to overeating which results in obesity. Only a little too much causes them to pack on the extra pounds and leaves them vulnerable to disease.

A nice bale of good alfalfa is perfect for a large horse. However a mini with his tiny stomach cannot properly digest alfalfa stalks and they will easily cause bloat. They need very fine grass hay and in order to meet their protein needs they require alfalfa in a different form, i.e. pellets.

A field of beautifully lush green grass can be a death warrant. A couple of hours on that and the sugars from the grass cause an imbalance which creates the perfect environent for laminitis and colic! Especially if the mini is unused to grazing, such as fresh spring grass after a harsh winter.

This affects large horses too but one can imagine that since a big horse while grazing only processes half the nutrients that his mini friend does, the mini is going to be affected sooner. So, his especially adapted hardiness can be a curse if one is not vigilant to one's mini's needs.

And escaping to raid the chicken coop is especially unhealthy! (Are you listening, Pippin?) Fortunately, for me (and Pippin) he has never had the misfortune to suffer from either of these awful maladies and I hope to keep it that way.

On that happy note, today's totally unrelated video is: Pippin, Lord of the Reins

Are mini horses smarter?

Well, this is debateable because no scientific studies have been done. Ponies are often considered smarter than horses and the shetland pony makes up a large proportion of the genetics of the miniature horse. Personally I think that there are geniuses and dumb asses (pun intended) within all shapes and sizes of the equine world. Perhaps smaller equines evolved a smarter brain to cope with their size and their often very harsh environments.

Setting aside assumptions, I do have to admit that Pippin is the smartest horse I've known, big or small. He never forgets a thing and that can be a bit intimidating because when I make a mistake I know he'll remember it!

Here's a prime example. A couple of winters ago we had about 2 feet of snow. There was nothing for him to eat and we let him loose in our 4 acre yard so he could scrounge around for tidbits. At that time we had kale growing and it stuck up out of the snow. Pippin discovered it and decided that it was worth munching on. Of course, we had the kale because WE wanted to munch on it so I chased him off.

Pippin ran off and dug around elsewhere in the snow for bits of food. A few minutes later he was back at the kale eating as fast as he could. I yelled at him and believe me, he turned up the speed and ate even faster. I grabbed him, put him back in his pen, and gave him his afternoon hay. End of matter. Right?

Nope. A year later, yes, a whole year, I put him out to graze in the garden. He hates most vegetable plants, including kale, and will only eat them if he's desperate. He was unaware that I was keeping an eye on him and was very good.

A couple of hours later I walked out to catch him and put him back in his pen for his hay and guess what he did! He took one look at me, looked at the kale on the other side of the garden, looked back at me, winked (okay, he didn't wink but he thought it!) and charged across the garden after the kale and started chomping away at it like he hadn't seen food all his life! The little stinker. He remembered that it made me mad and he was just teasing me. He doesn't even like it! And there was plenty of grass!

I've never underestimated him after that incident. And when I'm teaching him he knows what to do immediately after being shown. He'll learn a new trick after a couple of tries. As long as I can make clear what I want he'll remember it.

Talking of tricks, the featured video of the day is: Pippin, The Smart Miniature Horse.

Thank you so much for stopping by today on the first of the year, 1/1/11 and the first day of Pippin's run for horse of the month! I hope you all had a wonderful day celebrating New Year's and that you enjoy the rest of your weekend.

Today's first mini fact!

Miniature horses have uniquely small feet!

Yes, it's true! And while that is an obvious fact unless you've met one you really can't imagine how small they really are. The first time I laid eyes on Pippin he was only 4 months old and what struck me were his teeny tiny hooves! Of course, they're bigger now but still at 2" in diameter they are mighty small.

Miniature horses cannot be shod because the nails required to keep shoes in place would splinter the hoof wall. But, their hooves are much sturdier than their larger counterparts. Because minis are small their hooves take very little stress and they can not only trot on hard pavement without any adverse affects but can even gallop. A trim every two or three months keeps them in shape and they're good to go.

Miniature horses that work as therapy or guide horses often wear horse sneakers. This keeps them from slipping on polished surfaces and stops their hooves from damaging delicate surfaces.

I get to ride tomorrow morning with my dad and sister!!! Can't wait. I haven't got to ride since November. My sister took a few pictures of Purl and Beauty, I just need her to get them on the pc now. Beauty is so muddy. It will take a hole hour to clean her up I bet. Nothing else really going on her. Leaving a vote.

In the Pasture...
In the Pasture
(By: Erin Ellert)

Horses run and run
In the pasture
Manes flowing
Tail trailing behind them
Sweat glistening their coats

Stallions gallop around,
Keeping track of their mares
Foals bucking and playing
Mares graze softly
In the pasture

And when their time ends
They will go
In the pasture
In the sky

As many know
Horses will gallop
Into our hearts

..·:*¨¨*:·. *VOTE PIPPIN HOTM*.·:*¨¨*:·. .
Hi, my name is Pippin and I am running for horse of the month in January. I am a cute but feisty miniature stallion and at 31" tall and 200lbs, I can literally pull my own weight! I love going out with my humans and my favourite activities (after eating, of course!) are driving and jumping. But… really I'm game for anything asked of me. Nothing much scares me and I LOVE new and exciting adventures.

Do I have any faults? If you ask me, of course not! I'm perfect! If you ask mama? Well, she doesn't like me nipping her (oh, but it's so tempting!) and she wishes I were better with water. I'm not too keen on baths or puddles.

Next month I will have been on the Horse Channel for 4 years and I'm the oldest active member. I would greatly appreciate your daily votes and support for me all next month. I plan to educate all my fans on the wonders of minis and I hope to highlight one of my movies each day.

Thank you in advance and I hope to see you all next month so that I can reach my vote goal of 10,000 votes! Wishing you all the best for the new year and leaving a vote!

Come visit me, Eddie (In Loving Memory), Prince & Pippin (Gone too soon).
