There is a song that plays in America. It is the sound of hoof beats. For if there would be no hoof beats, there would have been no horse, and if there would been no horse there would be no settled land beyond the Mississippi River. It was the horse that carried the Indians and the Indians that made the first roads. It was the horses that pulled the covered wagons and the wagons that carried the pioneers farther west. It was the horse that carried Daniel Boone while he blazed a trail through Kentucky. It was the wild horse that was used by the ranchers to round up their cattle. It was the horse that carried the Pony Express riders east and west, with news and letters. It was the horse that carried our ancestors in battle, to make America a free country at last. It was the horse that pulled boats along the Erie Canal, making way for people to travel. It was the horse that worked underground, providing power for a carousel, making many happy hours for children. Now.... it is the horse that is the Amish and Mennonite's transportation. It is the horse that provides pleasure, money and work for many riders. Alas, it is also the horse that is fed to the dogs, the horse that is slaughtered mercilessly by the thousands. What is the horse to you? It is a machine for transportation? Is it food for your dogs and cats? Is it your money-maker? Or is it your faithful, lifetime companion, that has feelings and loves you when you feel as if every body else hates you? What is the horse to you? Without the horse, America would not be as it is now. Say thank you to your horse! (I wrote that this morning when i was bored:^) I hope you have fun with your horse!Come visit me, Sweet Pea & Flicka & Acorn (me riding Flicka!!).
