GOOD MORNING ALL, we left votes on this sunny Saturday morning.
Clean up got under way, basically this property had been left about 15 years ago, the barn closed up the fences left to fall down, the house had been rented over the years and as you can see from the pics, the barn was used as a garbage dump. We had to literally hack the overgrowth away with machetes in order to get inside, we carted away at least half a dozen trailer loads of "junk". It took a good couple of months to get it ready to be a safe comfortable home for Sterl May, but thru all the work I stayed focused on my goal. Once she was settled and happy I would look for a horse to ride. The only issue was Sterl had never been alone and I worried about her stressing by herself, that is where "Jackie" entered the picture (today's profile shot) Our coach, Val had a few boarders, one owed back board, they had a horse and little Jackie, they came in the middle of the night and took the horse but left Jackie, Val gave him to Sterl May for company. Jackie was about 7 when we got him, part mini, part Shetland pony, about 9hh, but don't worry, he didn't know he was little. He became Sterl's "little side kick". Life was good. Votes for both your horses
Feels like winter is back in Ontario. We left chilly, windy votes for all.
The next stage of Sterl May story could go on and on, I'm just going to give you the highlights. Even tho we live in the country, we had no place to keep her, so I gathered my thoughts and started to look for somewhere she could call home. I did have some criteria, like it needed to be safe, preferably with some kind of companion, Sterl has never been alone, it needed to be close enough that I could get there daily to feed etc. my work day starts early and I did not want to be driving all over the country side before work every day. I put the word out every where, I asked neighbors, I literally started knocking on doors. It was not looking good, until finally someone told me about an old abandoned barn not far from where we lived. There was an old shack of a house on the property that was rented to a young man that farmed with his family, he kept the house as a place to get away from work and be alone. But the barn and pasture had been let go for about 15 years. I took a look at it and at first rejected the whole idea, way too much work involved. But after David and one of my brothers hacked their way through the overgrowth around the barn door, they said "this could work". I used my imagination, the barn had water and electric, it had a pasture. about 5 acres, it needed fencing, but I saw in my mind a safe peaceful home for my girl. I located the owners, I told them my story. It was like it was meant to be. These people owned this property and had planned that one day when they retire, they would build on this land, they where huge animal lovers and where touched by my dedication to Sterl May. They said "if you think that place will work for you, you are welcome to it" the only restriction was, if something goes wrong we don't want to hear about it, I was responsible for the clean up and fencing, and I had to get along with Robert, the tenant in the little house. GOOD MORNING, We left you all a vote. Now that I had an answer although, not the answer I wanted, I have to admit that I did fall apart, there were lots of tears. Reaction varied at the barn, most were understanding and sympathetic but remember the lady that said I needed to "hit her harder", well she said "I don't know what you're crying about, you just sell her and get something else, it's not like you raised from a baby" I have never believed that animals were disposable, and I promised Sterl a home until the day she died. But, reality set in David said that I could not continue to pay board to go 4x a week to simply pat her, there was the wear and tear on the vehicle and the gas for all the travelling back and forth, for what, I can't ride her. I needed to THINK. bringing her home was not an option, we had no land or barn. I didn't know what to do, YET, but I knew I WAS NOT GETTING RID OF HER. Here is an early morning vote for you, STERL MAY and I appreciate all the wonderful support, thank you.
Dr. Cook went to the University Hospital to go over Sterl's case with her Drs, he then came to us to explain the diagnosis in detail. This type of condition is sometimes seem in very high end dressage horses, because they are held in such tight collection for long periods, enormous stress is placed on the spine, it is sometimes caused from something like a fall eg. a horse flips over in cross ties, or an accident in a trailer, that type of thing, also studies have shown that pacing Standardbreds are more susceptible because of the diagonal motion of the legs during pacing, BINGO, STERL IS PACER BRED. Regardless of how it happened the outcome is the same. Sometimes with rest and time the bones will actually fuse, therefore no more rubbing of bone on bone and so no pain.
The bottom line was Sterl's riding days were over. GOOD MORNING ALL, LEFT YOU A VOTE, Thanks for being patient with the story, I don't want to bore you if they are too long. Have you heard the expression "egg on my face"? well, that is exactly how all these Dr's felt as they went over Sterl's xrays, here is the diagnosis "xrays revealed sclerosis,periosteal proliferation,decreased interspinous space and lytic cysts along the 14-18 thoracic vertebrae" to break that down it means that the bones of her spine are rubbing bone on bone and causing her great pain, add a saddle and weight and it it even greater...One of her Dr's said after reading the xrays he could not believe that she let me on her back at all, he said "all I can say is your horse has ONE HELL OF A HEART" I already knew that. In such cases sometimes cortisone is injected into the spaces, so they brought in a Dr. to assess that option, it was determined that there was not enough room to get the needle in, surgery was discussed but not recommended, we were offered an acupuncture treatment and we took it, they said improvement could take up to 2 weeks, if nothing happened it wasn't going to help. It didn't. Howdy ♥ Good to hear from you!
★ Whiskey’s profile picture is of our turnout #3. We will brush hog it this coming weekend if our shedder is delivered. It has not been delivered yet! Deacon’s profile is of turnout #2 with Cliff, Whiskey was going to bow for him because he wanted back in the #3!!!!! We only let them on #3 for nearly an hour. Days seem short when you have so much to do! Have a great week, I only work 3 days this week. Will be off Friday, Saturday, Sunday & Monday! Another vote.
Had some Sadie time today. We both need it everyday. It's getting hot here, so I didn't ride. I put the halter on her and walked her off the property. She was a little nervous, so we took it slow, stopping when she needed to to look around and see that she was okay. Neighborhood dogs were barking at us. She walked a little fast on the way back to the house. Had to keep stopping her to slow her down. She loved it. Going to walk her more often to get her use going off the property. Going to work up to riding her. Last time I rode her off the property, she was nervous and wanted to fight me. She should trust me more now. Sadie's a handful. She does need to be worked with a lot. Wish my time wasn't so limited. Looking forward to the day when I can have more time with her. She deserves it. we would love your support, please
Sterl May was born and raised on a small but successful STANDARDBRED farm not far from my home. Standardbred racing is very big in this part of Ontario. She was quite good at the track, but at 4 years old she got a respiratory virus that ended her racing career. Roxanne, the lady that I eventually bought Sterl's from worked on that farm. Because racing is a business and not a hobby, Sterly had to go. Roxanne remembers the morning she was told to get Sterl May ready for the market truck. Roxanne had known and cared for her for 4 years and could not bear the thought of her going to market, so she bought her on a whim. That night after work she trailered her to a friends house and said "I bought a horse can I keep her here for now" Sterly spent the next 6 years there playing with her two new pasture pals. Before I bought Sterl May(read her how we met story please),I used to lease a solid bred paint mare, at a local boarding stable not far from home. Her name was Fool Kat, I leased because as an adult getting back into riding, I wanted to be sure before I bought my own horse. The barn owners thought that I should buy a foal and raise it up. One of the other riders at the barn heard this and she said she knew of someone that had a horse for sale for not too much $$$ she mostly wanted a good home for this horse. The only thing was, she was a STANDARDBRED, that didn't mean anything to me. I went to meet her, and I will never forget the feeling I had when I walked into her paddock, she tuRned to look at me, THOSE EYES, THOSE BEAUTIFUL EYES, she still has those beautiful eyes, thanks for your support, we left a vote too. Left a vote, this will be short and sweet, the surgery went just awful,the pain it pretty intense, the repair was more extensive than we had anticipated, the GA made me quite sick, the nerve block in my arm and shoulder wore off way too fast. SO, the way I see it, is everything from here has got to be better.
