My Horse's Achievements: Because he's so handicapped, he gets an abscess like every winter. So we've become pros at soakin' the feet.:) And even though he still has flashbacks, it just takes a little reasurance from me to get him through the moment. He also rears on command, and can bow, though he does it in a 'special' kind of way.
My Horse's Favorite Treat: Apples, pears, carrots, basically any kind of fruit
My Horse's Favorite Things To Do: Eat, cause trouble, eat, laze around, eat, look cute, eat
Pet Peeves: Being teased, and never having enough time to be lazy. Being locked in a stall, or part of the barn completely ticks him off, so if he doesn't get to stretch his legs out of the pasture during the winter, he tends to be extravagant and worrisome. Too much energy:)

How We Met
Once upon a time, a young girl and a young horse were thrown together for a summer. The lady who owned the young horse wanted him trained for trail riding. The horse had never been ridden outside of an arena, and the young girl had never ridden inside of one. She rode on her road. Gravel and dirt. The young girl wasn't too sure she liked the narrow, skinny horse, but he had soft eyes, and a gently way. When she fell in love with him, she asked her mother if they could buy him. Her mother said they couldn't afford to, and said that the price was outragous because the young horse wasn't a horse for anybody. When the lady who owned the horse said she had him sold, and that she wanted the young girl to ride him for the people, the girl jumped at the opportunity to say good-bye to her young love. She didn't like the people at all, and tried to explain to them everything about the young horse. They wouldn't listen, and the young girl was devastated.
I was 14 when I met Stewy. The people who bought him, abused him, and then expected him to be a perfect angel. They decided to give him back to the lady who owned him, and she knew he was ruined, emotionally, and gave him to me. Her husband, who the horse belonged to technically, gave me his registration papers for christmas in 2008. I have finally gotten Stewy to the point that he doesn't rear or freak at the slightest things. It's amazing to know that through everything, he remembered the kindness he had known at our home. It makes you believe that Miracles do happen..

Hi Stewy, here's a vote for ya. So you're having a great time riding as much as possible since you got home. Good for you! I got to ride first today, so I got my lesson in. Then Karen worked her for like 45 more minutes, Paige had a sweat going on this mornin' and the temps weren't even that hot! LOL! Then I did some chores and then got the kids out for an hour now on grass, if the weather holds up, they'll be up to an hour and a half by the weekend. Put down more weed killer around the indoor arean outside walls. Gotta keep it clean. I have never seen so many ticks as this week. Took one off Harley and now up to my third on me. GROSS! Hi Stewy, here's a vote for ya. Congrats on the job! Need that to make some money and pay for the kids! LOL! Trail ride sounds like it was lot's of fun. What a beautiful day to have as our First Anniversary together, Paige and I, a show team! She rode really well, of course after two days of Karen tuning her up, she better ride great! LOL! Then I rode Indy, he's just such a sweet heart too!. Mowed a pasture and got a couple of little things done. Washing machine quite working again. We're moving the other out to see if it holds water and runs, if so, in it goes! Otherwise, I have to bit the bullet and get a new one! Oh well, that's life in the fast lane! LOL! Galloping by with some votes! So, spring shots/teeth work didn't happen on Fri. Our vet got backlogged with surgeries so we had to move it to this Fri (unless he gets backlogged again). After having several weeks of sunny weather sometimes getting in the 80s, the rain has returned with a vengeance. Today, we got about 1/4 to 1/2 inch of rain and man was it windy and cold! Suppose to get more of the same tomorrow. Come visit me, Katie.

GOOD MORNING, LEFT A THANK YOU VOTE, So, let's get right to it. On routine exam all her vitals where good, she, of course appeared healthy, she had regular vacs, wormings and her teeth were good. We drew blood for a complete work up, all neg, with nothing obvious we started the slow process of ruling out, one by one the possibilities. I mean slow because in order to not get confused we needed to give each treatment time to test effects, does that make sense?? Being a Mare, almost 15 and never bred, we wanted to rule out ovary issues first, I was happy and relived when the physical exam and the internal ultrasound was negative, we then went at the simple stuff like corrective shoeing, we tried a course of Regumate and a series of Prostoglandn injection, we tested for neurological issues, we looked at eye issues, double checked teeth and throat, there was no obvious tenderness in her back muscles, however she lounged better than under saddle. Thru all the testing, which took weeks, I still rode her and acted like everything was fine. When Dr. Cook was satisfied that we had ruled out EVERYTHING, he said he needed some very accurate xrays of her spine, he needed us to go to the Equine Hospital in Guelph. He called to make her appointment and I asked Val(our coach) to trailer us up there, and on Jan 15/98 in one of the worst snow storms ever off we went. TO BE CONTINUED. GOOD MORNING, LEFT VOTES FOR ALL, TO THANK YOU FOR YOURS. This is where Sterly's story takes a bit of a twist. FF almost 4 years, we are still at the boarding barn, Sonya is now in University, I still ride 4x a week. I started to notice a slight hesitation from Sterl that was new, she did not want to go forward, at first it was mild, and I could push her thru it, but it got worse. She would actually do a small buck and a very tiny rear when I asked for forward. This was so out of character for her, but ever her resistance was polite, like she was trying to get my attention, she did. Believe me when I say there were lots of suggestion from folks that observed us, most thought that it was behavior and that I was not strong enough and I was letting her get away with it, one woman told me I had to beat her hard enough to make a welt on her skin, that would smarten her up!!!. I chose to call Dr. Cook, I explained the situation and we made arrangements for him to come and see her, I asked if it could be "just" behavior, he said "whenever a horse that was happy with its work begins to resist, they are trying to tell you something is wrong", in the meantime carry on as normal, act like everything is fine TO BE CONTINUED, Talk soon, love Donna Lee & STERLY GIRLYCome visit me, Sterl May````PROUD TO BE HOTM````, Angel Sassy Mac & Friends & Royal Mes.

Hi Stewy, here's a vote for ya. It's probably better that there is no divider in it. This way he can slant himself to balance better. Yes, very slow on those winding roads. I crawl on them with my rig. Had an awesome ride on Paige today. I even put a neck rope on her and gave the reins a lot of slack, like I don't ride that way anyhow! The grabbed the neck rope and worked her. She did well, not perfect, but good. Got a little faster at the lope and jog than what she's trained to do, but I didn't put a lot of leg on her either, I know Karen would have her going better like that. But I'll work on it once a week. Had them out this afternoon in the warm sun. Mowed another pasture, now I can't start all over again tomorrow with the lawn and follow with the pastures! LOL! on her new job!!!! I remember working all summers during scholl breaks! First job was cleaning the fancy horse stalls down the road from us! I quit when a friend of my parent's had a daughter who was jumpi,ng a stone wall and her & the horse both had to be put down. GOOD MORNING MY FRIENDS,I would like to continue with Sterl May's story, thanks for reading them and commenting on them, because she is 30 and retired, it is also fun for me to remember the early years. THANKS FOR THE VOTES AND SUPPORT. All was well at the barn, Sterly's retraining was in full swing, I still leased Fool Kat, so I was a pretty busy girl, 2 horses to ride 4x a week and the barn was 40 minutes from home, a full time job, a house and husband to take care of plus 4 cats and a dog(Nicky) that I did agility with. The young couple that owned Fool Kat were pregnant and building a new house, they had no time for her but, did not want to let her go. So I was a perfect solution for them. Unfortunately, the baby arrived and the house was ready and they were ready to take her home. I had leased her for almost 2 years, I had Sterly but still it was a sad good by. Fool Kat was 23 when I started her lease, I kept in touch after they moved her home, she was basically a pet, she died quietly at 32. GOOD MORNING, here it is day 16 already. WE LEFT A VOTE FOR YOU, and a big thanks for the wonderful support. Being a pretty new horse owner, I had sort of thought once I get the first year under my belt, I'd be good to go....Silly me, aren't we ALWAYS learning from them. One thing is for sure, if all horses were like STERL MAY, everyone would have a horse. By now she is pretty much the "sweetheart" of the barn. The owners loved her 'cause she was easy to handle, never caused a fuss and I was there regularly(every chance I had). One morning, Sterl was in the aisle cross ties, I was grooming her and Margaret was touring a new prospective boarder, they got to us and Margaret says "this is Sterl May, she is Standardbred, this horse jumps" as they walked past, I heard the guy say "nice butt!!!" Thanks for listening to my stories of Sterl May, I guess by now you can see just how special she is to us. The trail ride was bad, but there were tons of great stuff that happened at "the barn" One morning I had just finished my ride and we jumped a few little jumps. I had turned Sterl loose in the arena to roll. As I waited for her, one of the other boarders came in with a friend. She introduced me and said her friend just came for the visit to watch her ride. I told them I was almost done, I'd be out of the way in a few minutes. I couldn't help notice that the friend was REALLY looking at Sterly, of course I thought because she is sooooo beautiful. As I got ready to leave the arena, I called "come on Sterl May, let's go" the friend says, "what did you call her? Is she a Standardbred?" "she said, I'm K. V. this horse was born on my Dad's farm, OMG, wait till I tell Dad that I saw her, she looks great, do you jump her? he will be so happy to hear that she is alive and well", we both cried a few happy tears, what a small world, what a great horse. After that day, I made sure that I let Mr. V know every year or so that Sterly was indeed alive and well. Thanking you all with a vote today. We were really enjoying life together at the barn. I love having the guys home but I have always missed the camaraderie of other riders support. Sterly was now jumping small courses, mostly xrails but also some verticals. We had advanced to the outdoor ring. One evening, late spring I was at the barn and had just started my warm up when a couple of the other riders came in and said "we are going on a trail ride, want to join us" We had not done that yet, so I thought OK, sounds fun.....WRONG...Sterl May thought there was something spooky behind every tree, bush, rock, everything was a monster. She just could not settle, so I could not settle. The other riders are like, she'll be fine come on. So I hang in, we struggle along, Sterl on high alert, snorting all the way. Just then we see ahead of us in the field a dozen or so cows and everyone is like HEE HAW, LETS GET 'EM. I'm like, NO. STERL JUST FREAKED...they all took off, left us there, me scared to death, Sterl just dancing and prancing. So I did what any chicken would do, I got off and we walked back to the barn. I was just fuming, nice friends, don't ever ask me to go on your stupid trail ride again, everyone had a big laugh on us, it was all soon forgotten, but we never went on another trail ride again. Hi Stewy, here's a vote for ya. That BBQ sounds great, and home cooked food. I'm into the mirco-wave thing. Lean Cuisine, Stouffers, all the easy stuff. Hate to cook! LOL! Didn't do a whole lot today. Ran downtown and did some errands. Did ride Paige though. Worked on pushing that hip over and making her hold it and travel with the shoulders straight, good exercise for the lope offs. Then worked on downward transitions and stopping and then backing on a slack rein. I gave my legs a workout! LOL! Indy got the day off. Very cold, 35 this morning and a high of 52 only, windy too. GOOD MORNING, we left you a vote, thanks so much for yours. Happy Mothers Day.
Things were settling into a routine, my work schedule allowed me to be at the barn T,F,S,S, because I worked a 12 hour shift on M,T,W. Our lessons were going well, Sterl was an excellent student, she took easily to things like trot poles (Charlie still HATES trot poles) every time I was with her I was so proud, every one thinks their horse is the best looking. Sterly had only been at the barn a couple of weeks, she was turned out in a small paddock along side the road. When I got to the barn that morning, Max told me someone had come by and wondered if that Mare was for sale. We have a large number of AMISH farmers in our area, at first I was taken back. We got a little rain on and off all day, but not the thunderstorms and heavy rains that they talked about yesterday! Got 2 nice rides in today. Rode Paige first, she was on! Then rode Indy, he was very good and he even loped for me, of course he would have preferred not to have used so much energy! LOL! Then I played with editing two video's that I did of friends showing this past weekend. Cut, splice, and added music and sent them to CD's to give to them. So, now Sterl May is safely at the boarding barn, life is good. I HAVE MY OWN HORSE, I had to tell you all about Sonya because I never would have made it thru the training and frustration without her. It did not take long to see that Sterly knew NOTHING about being ridden, she had had someone on her back a handful of times, but trained she wasn't. She had no bend, no flexibility, she had no idea what aids were, her head was straight up and out, when she was confused which was often, she paced. That was her comfort zone. But, none of that mattered to me, she was mine, we would learn together. As lucky as I was to have Sonya, Sterly was lucky to have Doolie(Sonya's horse) his stall was across the aisle from her. And of course, when I rode, especially at first Sonya was always there. Sterly had this huge crush on Doolie and once in the arena, she would follow him anywhere. I kept Fool Kat for those times when nothing went right and I just wanted to ride and noT really work SO HARD at it. We started lessons with Sonya's coach, in the beginning it wasn't pretty, but like I said, we were both learning together. Before I tell you more about STERLY and our adventures, I need to tell you a bit about the young rider that suggested her to me. I met her at the boarding barn which was primarily WESTERN, Sonya was the only English rider there. Sometimes after one of my lessons I would just hang around and watch her ride. I wanted to ride like that, SONYA often came to the barn when no one else was around. So, I started planning my trips when I knew she would be there. I would tack up my leased horse, Fool Kat in my borrowed tack, I didn't have any of my own stuff yet. I would ride up beside her, her horse Doolie was a huge TB, and I'd say "Hi" she would look down at us and say "Hi" I'd say "are we posting on the correct diagonal?" and she would say "NO" and I'd say "can you help me?" she would, and off I'd go, then I'd ride back up to her and say "are we cantering on the correct lead?" and she would say "NO" she would help me get the lead and off we'd go....I believe that we became friends because I drove the poor girl crazy, I think she finally said "I might as well be friends because she apparently isn't going anywhere". I'm telling you this because this amazing friendship that started all those years ago in that little boarding barn continues today. SONYA was only 16 when we met, I have watched that young lady grow up, finish her education, become a fabulous teacher, get married, and she now has 3 beautiful children, her daughter Kaitlyn is just 4 and has started riding lessons. SONYA was and still is there for me every step of the way with STERLY and every horse that came after. TO BE CONTINUED. If I didn't get to blog last night, it's my Internet Provider went down! Was on the line with the help desk for almost an hour, it was their side messed up on the DSL service. Came back up this afternoon!
Wednesday, Karen came up to work with Paige and then give me a lesson. Of course the mare was on her game. Did awesome.

Roxanne loved STERL MAY, after caring for her for the first 4 years of her life, she could not let her go. Sterly spent the next 6 years of her life at Roxanne's friends place, she was not a problem, she had two other horses to play with. It was always Roxy's plan to make Sterl a riding horse, and to be fair she did go out and ride her a few times over the years, but as we all know too well, life gets in the way. Fast forward Roxanne's life, there was a marriage a couple of moves, eventually she and her husband tried to set up a small breeding farm, they wanted to try and make it in the STANDARDBRED business, so they gathered a few mares and they even trained a couple for the track. Sterly came home. It is a tough business and it costs lots of money, money that they were not making, they both were holding down full time jobs as well as trying to make it racing. Long story short, it took about a year to realize they were broke and so liquidate the liabilities keep the assets. Sterly had to go. This is where I come in. At the boarding barn where I leased there was one other English rider, I would plan my trips to the barn when I knew she would be there, she is the one that over heard the conversation about me wanting to get MY OWN HORSE. She told me about Sterly, so I called Roxanne, I went to meet her and with my borrowed saddle and bridle I rode her right there in her paddock. The rest of that day you can read in her profile "how we met" STERLY had just turned 11 when Roxy and I delivered her to the boarding barn, I had my own horse, and she was BEAUTIFUL. Hi Stewy, here's a vote for ya. Sounds like so much fun, riding with your mom! My parents didn't ride. There's no real up-keep to an indoor arena, just a tractor with a drag and keep the sand lose and moist, I keep mine moist by using Magnesium cloride flakes in it every couple of years. Mix it in and it draws moisture out of the air, you never have dust and don't have to wet it! What a great ride today on Paige, darn that mare! Why couldn't she have been like this on sunday! Think I said that yesterday too!. Karen came up to work her and give me a lesson, of course the rains were pouring and hitting the indoor roof hard, Paige could care less, she's good about stupid things like that, don't care much about anything! Except being alone in the barn or away from Indy! Couldn't work outside, so I played with the camera and lap top, working on doing a edit for Karen of her showing Richie in Hunter Under Saddle and then one of Terry and REdford in the Select Western Pleasure. Was doing good, then hit a wrong key and now I'm all messed up! LOL! Blonde moment! Love ya, Marion and the blondies. Come visit me, Nuttin But Good. Thanks for 3400 Sterl Mae, HOTM!, R.I.P. Hi! Glad you are home and with your beloved horses again! Leaving a blog on Gizmo's page also. Had a fun horse day today!
A fun Wednesday vote ! I rode ANKA with my neighbor’s 14 year old daughter on her show guy TAO ! Photos below, will add more later. We had 2 hours of relaxing fun and Anka being only 3 years old and barefoot was great! No slipping on any rocks like Tao with his metal shoes. I am a big fan of polyurethane padded shoes with no nails & vibrating metal! THANKS FOR YOUR SUPPORT....
Sterl May was born and raised on a small but successful STANDARDBRED farm not far from my home. Standardbred racing is very big in this part of Ontario. She was quite good at the track, but at 4 years old she got a respiratory virus that ended her racing career. Roxanne, the lady that I eventually bought Sterl's from worked on that farm. Because racing is a business and not a hobby, Sterly had to go. Roxanne remembers the morning she was told to get Sterl May ready for the market truck. Roxanne had known and cared for her for 4 years and could not bear the thought of her going to market, so she bought her on a whim. That night after work she trailered her to a friends house and said "I bought a horse can I keep her here for now" Sterly spent the next 6 years there playing with her two new pasture pals. Got some rest, well passed out on the couch last night and was out for the count. Felt good. Rode Paige today, now if she only rode like that sunday, we could have shown! Silly mare! Then we went and got 4 ton of mason sand for the indoor, top dressing in a couple of low spots. Then mowed two and a half pastures, supposed to rain the next few days, needed to get it done. Now that your mom is back, but be a good paint horse and stop the bucking! NOT GOOD! Hey, I never got bucked from any kind of horse, just a out of control freaked out horse last year for the first time in my life and I am alot older than you! I hate to see horses bucking in saddle. But if they buck and kick up their hooves in the pasture when they see you it is so cool because they are happy! Tell Stewy to be a good & cool guy when you are in the saddle! Paints are usually so calm. Hi Stewy, here's a vote for ya. Guess you are home now and enjoying the horses! Hope you got a ride in as soon as you could.
What a great 5 days we had at the show. First let me tell ya, Indy is just great with his girls. Ella did very well with him in the Small Fry Showmanship, there's a video the mom posted on FB and I put it up on my home page also! Paige did very well for her first show of the season. It was a huge show. Rented out 240 plus stalls. All my classes had no less than 13 horses in them. And really broke to death horses! Paige placed anywares from 3rd to 5th in her halter classes. We got a couple of low end placings in showmanhip, two pilot errors on my part! OOPS! Karen rode Friday night in the pro class, but it was deep compatition, but Paige was good. I rode two classes later in the non pro and it was just as deep, I went against really broke to death compatition. We had a ways to go yet. Sunday was Paige's like Monday Mare day, so I didn't even waste my money showing her, we just schooled her in all the arenas. The circus out back didn't bother her at all, the bull riding across the field didn't entice her either. She was very calm about it all. So was Mr. Indy. Glad to be home, up everyday at 5:30 and not hitting the sack till 10 pm half the time. On the go all day, this ole'cowgirl is wooped! LOL! Hi Stewy, here's a vote for ya. So close to Home Sweet home time! Happy for ya! Well, all packed and ready to leave bright an early for our first Quarter Horse Show of the season. Spent the entire day working with the horses, packing the trailer, packing the truck, shaving the horses, mowing the lawn and anything else that needed to be done before going showing! Will be off line till Monday night, vote please and blog, I'll try to read as many as I can when I get home. I am taking the lap top, but don't know if they have WI-Fi on the grounds. Also friday and saturday will be all day shows and the money classes at night. So I doubt I'll have time to play on the computer in the trailer! LOL! Will miss ya'll.
