Fancy is leaving a chilly Monday morning vote for you as she chases Scotty away from me. LOL. Silly girl, might be a little jealous. She always tries to get in between Scotty and I. She really has no need to fret. She is my only horse.

Voted in honor of our special HC friend Hi Tech Image #40041. I have been out of town since 1am last night. It is now 6:30pm and I just got home and logged in to HC to find blogs informing me we have lost yet another precious friend. We are sad for Marion. We have enjoyed reading about HT in his HOTM run blogs. Each horse here deserves HOTD and HOTM. Please vote for HT diligently, so he can win November HOTM.

FANCY'S PERCEPTIONS, BORN TO SPOOK!!!

JACK-o-LANTERN
Jack-o-lantern, Jack-o-lantern,
You are such a funny sight.
As you sit there by the window,
Looking out into the night.
You were once a sturdy pumpkin,
growing on a curly vine.
Now you are a Jack-o-lantern,
See your night lights shine.

Fancy is leaving a superb Saturday vote.
Thanks for voting Scotty HOTD, his owner is visiting today and he will get treats & lots of attention today. Scotty has done many things. 3 years ago he was a kids horse. Since then he has participated in some parades and Buffalo Soldiers presentations. Every one seems to like him very much.
Fancy seems to like Scotty too much. The first evening with Scotty, I was not very happy! Fancy did not want to come to me and I thought Fancy was going to starve for not eating. Each day she gets closer to her normal self again. The only thing now, Fancy seems to be a little skiddish, which is not normal for my girl. I have taken her out on walks each day that Scotty has been here. I rode Fancy around the block yesterday and she was very good, but a little hyper to go. I stopped and took her bridle off to let her graze for a while too.
I have been dealing with horses for almost 20 years with plenty of horses and never had my toe stepped on. Well, guess what? Dog gone if Scotty didn't step on the tip of my boot Friday evening. I believe he was very aware of it too! Gonna work on his ground manners:~)
Any riding going on this weekend for you? If I get the opportunity, I better take it!

Q: Why do potatoes make good detectives?
A: Because they keep their eyes peeled.

Today's photo was taken September 28, 2011. Fancy is performing the only trick that I know I have taught her. I say stump and she will put her front feet onto that old tree stump.

How was your weekend? We enjoyed a nice cool Carolina weekend here. Fancy's hooves had grown out and were beginning to chip, so I decided to try my hand at rasping. I had the tools for over a year, but I was afraid to try. I looked up how to trim hooves on youtube and I did it! I did as little as possible since it was my first time. Made my back hurt, but no more chipping hooves for now. I was very glad they didn't need to be trimmed, only shaped up. I tell you if you ever try it, you will appreciate a farrier with a strong back, LOL. Have you ever tried to do a horses hooves? If you have, how did you come out on the job?

Fancy is leaving a vote for you this Friday morning.

King Kong was very bad yesterday. King did not want to listen to my brother and my brother's friend wanted to help, so he got on King. While my brother's friend was riding King the horse reared and they fell back. He is ok, only suffered whiplash and soreness. We don't know what got into King. When he reared, there was no bit pressure at all. So he could have moved in any direction and he chose up :(

Fancy was very good. My son has ridden her. He has gotten bored riding in the corral, so we walk around the block and through the car wash. My son loves to ride her. He would like me to turn him lose. But I don't think Fancy or my son are ready for that. Because she is still very young and I know my son does not have experience in case something did frighten her. But so far she has been so wonderful on his rides out. I don't take that for granted and I pray that she remains steady.
What are you up to on the last Friday in September?

Fancy & I love all of our HorseChannel friends and we hope you guys will stop by her page to vote each day in October so Fancy can be your November HOTM.

Fancy & King has left a Sunday vote for you!

As Paula says it,"Horses are healers" Now my brother may have his healer. Thanks for welcoming King to HC with your awesome comments and with HOTD! I was surely surprised I called my brother just now to tell him. He says "THANKS!" He got the news as he is riding King for the fist time right now as I type. I am jealous, they didn't call me!!!!!! You all are so sweet to us and we totally think you guys are the best, love you with a really big hug!

When my brother said he was ready for another horse, I was very excited and happy! The lady said King is least 16HH and he was vetted in May, which was good for us because he is up to date on vaccines and a new coggins.

Friday morning Fancy was stiff from the rabies vaccine she got Thursday. Good thing we had Bute left from the time she had a reaction to the vaccines she had months ago. I gave her the Bute, it helped. I did spend Friday walking her around to eat grass to loosen up her body. I walked her 1 1/2 hours several times Friday and Saturday. In her corral she stands in one spot when she is not feeling well. And then the stiffness and swelling get worse.
Saturday Fancy was not very stiff, we trailered to the farm where King is. We had them on leads and let them graze for a few hours.
When I got home, some old horseriding pals came by on horseback! One guy rides a Percheron cross and she is huge and beautiful! The other guy rides a well behaved paint. Fancy wanted to ride out with them. She was doing her little gaited thing all over that corral and pitching a fit. She looks at me like she is saying, "LET'S GO, RIGHT NOW!!!" Well maybe we will get some good long rides in soon!
We hope your weekend was nice. Did you have any excitement, or just a nice weekend?

FANCY'S PERCEPTIONS:
“When your horse follows you without being asked, when he rubs his head on yours, and when you look at him and feel a tingle down your spine...you know you are loved.” (John Lyons)

Fancy is prancing by with a Thursday vote!

Today was very busy for us. Fancy got her coggins and rabies updated today. Now we wait for the coggins papers to come in the mail. Our trip was very nice. The vet loved all over my girl. I was glad I gave her a bath before we left. He said she was so soft as he hugged all over her. It was so cute. LOL!!! LOL!!! Fancy was enjoying the attention.
After I got her home, I handwalked her around the neighborhood for some grazing and met some new faces. Fancy was walking on the near side to the ditch and this young man crossed the street in front of us and he spoke politely. When he walked by Fancy she ran from him like he was going to eat her up. I told her it was ok, he kept walking, she kept her eye on him, and then we finished our walk. She did let some toddlers hug and rub her. She always sniffs the toddlers. They don't know what to think of that. But at least she likes them and doesn't run away from them. We walked some new streets and found some nice fields of grass for grazing. Finally got home tired, but it was such a nice day. Fancy enjoyed 3 apples when we got back.

Did you ride any this week? We hope your Thursday was very pleasant as well. Have a pleasant nights rest and happy horsey dreams!

FANCY'S PERCEPTIONS:
"A friend is one who walks in when others walk out" (Walter Winchell)

Fancy's sliding by in the mud to leave you this Tuesday vote. We hope your holiday weekend was most delightful. Did you enjoy any horsey time? We did nothing here this weekend. Now it is raining off and on☁

Lots of friends asked how I began to teach Fancy to lay down. Here is my comment on that.
1. First you teach the horse to let you handle his front feet. You teach them to let you hold that foot up for long as you want to with out taking it back.
2. Rope breaking helps. I mean throwing the rope all around their body, head, and legs till they are in no way fearful or uncomfy with that feel and touch.
3. You need 2 SOFT ropes. Don't tie, but loop one around the horse's front near pastern (ankle area), you will use this to hold the hoof up only, Make sure this rope never gets tight because it may slow or stop blood flow.
4. Second SOFT rope attaches to the halter as usual, except you run it between the front legs to the off side of your horse and across the back to lay on the same side of his body as the leg you are going to lift.
5. Lift the foot using the rope that is around that foot. Hold still until he is o.k. with that. Hold the foot up at the point that it touches the belly. No tighter than necessary and don't tighten as you go.
6. Teach the bow. Grab the rope that is attached to the halter it should lay just behind the withers and pull slowly and softly until he gives with his nose. His head will tip slightly then he is ready for a bow. He should go back and downward until his knee touches the ground. You have to know your horse. Let him up before he gets upset. Just in case he lays all the way down at this point, keep in mind, which ever way his nose tips is the direction his feet will lay. Stay clear of his feet so you don't get kicked.
7. If he lay down from the bow, you want to rub all over him before he gets up and tell him how great he is!
8. If he didn't lay down from the bow on his own, redo the bow and hold in the bow position and he should lay down. You may need to slightly increase the pressure with the rope that is across his withers. But remember to be very gentle. He should lay down. Depending on the horse, it may take a few times to get all the way down.

Look up Ken McNabb on the internet, his method is very gentle.
I also learned that you do not want to ride a horse up from the ground until it is over 5 years old because it's bones are still growing and you can damage it's developing bone structure, which could lead to future problems.
If I confused you, let me know or look it up on the internet. I hope this has helped.

Also if you know something that will help me with this, please leave me a blog about it!

FANCY'S PERCEPTIONS:
“He who opens a school door, closes a prison.” (Victor Hugo)

We are laying down your Tuesday vote.

Thanks to all of you who helped with my bareback mounting problem. I tried two suggestions, the first method: I don't seem to have enough upper body or arm strength to make it. The second method: I wound up kicking Fancy in the hip/side. I did not like that and I can't blame her if she didn't like it either. But she stood there and I figured if I did that too many times she would be very unhappy with me.
The technique of laying her down was also suggested. Thus, Fancy doesn't have to endure my feet kicking her in the hip.
I viewed some youtube videos on how to teach your horse to lay down. I tried to pick the gentlest techniques I saw and combined them.
Fancy had her first lesson on laying down Monday evening. I could not believe she did it on the 2nd try. We repeated this 3 times and since she was so nice about it, I handwalked her around the neighborhood and let her graze. She really enjoyed that!
Teaching her to lie down has always been something that I felt was too much for me to handle. I couldn't believe we did it. I think once Fancy fully understands, it will be like a fun trick!!! It is not hard as I thought it would be, but it would have been easier if I had taught it when she was smaller. Have you ever taught a horse to lie down?

Angel is so pretty. Have you been able to ride this summer?

Did you have a great weekend?

Sunday was nice here. Fancy and I rode out after church. Fancy didn't want to go in, but we headed for home when the storm came up. It was thundering when we got home, so I didn't get to groom her. Usually horses will roll when you put them up after a ride and don't groom them. I expected Fancy to be dirty from rolling. This morning Fancy was pretty clean. I think she uses her scratching pad that is screwed onto the tree.

The Horse
Where in this wide world can man find nobility without pride,
Friendship without envy,

There is nothing so quick, nothing more patient.

I tried the bareback mounting again yesterday. Didn't work out. So I used the tractor tire again. Once mounted, Fancy listened very well. We walked around in the corral and even did some leg yields. It was so much fun!
