Mustang from Yamhill, OR

Gizmo

About Me

Active within 38 Days

I am from Yamhill, OR and I've been a Club Horse member for 3 years, 5 months and 26 days

Nicknames: Gizzy Girl, Gizimo, Giz, Punky, Gizzy Moto, Goofy Gizmo

Age: 7 years old

Gender: Mare

Breed: Mustang

Height: Haven't actually measured her, but would guess about 15, 15.1 hh

Color: She's a solid liver chestnut with dapples During the summer.

Type of Riding: Bareback, Western, trail, and have ridden in the English saddle.

My Horse's Achievements: I have her complete trust, which is amazing, she bathes, lifts her feet, has been shod, she now officially trailers, leads, is trail broke, and is an amazing learning experience that will benefit me greatly in future horses I work with. We also, have learned to rear on command. She's done it on her own for a while, so I just started asking for it, and she gave it to me!

My Horse's Favorite Treat: She likes peppermint treats. I have discovered her love of pears, and she will eat an apple now if it is cut up!! Mostly just being loved on by ME!

My Horse's Favorite Things To Do: She likes to eat. When I was gentling her, she discovered how delicious grain is. And she loves being loved on! When we go for a ride, she likes for me to let her go so she can stretch her legs on a good run. She enjoys trail riding, as she likes to explore cause in the wild they went anywhere and everywhere they wanted.

Pet Peeves: She doesn't really like dogs, but you wouldn't know it when you're in with her, or have her on a halter. Unless they're strange dogs. A neighbor has dogs that come running out at you, (Not viciously) and she's not sure if she should eat them:)

My Horse's motto: Opportunity is missed by most people because it is dressed in overalls and looks like work.

How We Met

I have been wanting to adopt a mustang from the BLM since as long as i can remember. When i started learning about senior projects, and the requirements and different things you can do, I decided to adopt, gentle, and train a genuine wild mustang. My uncle, mom, and myself went down to Burns, Oregon on June 24, 2011 to pick a horse out. There was a four day thing, where you can pick a horse out, and they haul it for free within a four hundred mile radius. She arrived on July first, and was calm as could be, which is wierd, seeing as she was wild. It's been so exciting, and an amazing adventure!! I always wanted that bond that can't be broken between a wild animal and the first person to gain it's trust, and now I do. It's truly amazing. She's opened my eyes to what the bond between man and beast can really become.

The Horse

Where in this wide world can man find nobility without pride,
Friendship without envy,
Or beauty without vanity?
Here, where grace is served with muscle
And strength by gentleness confined
He serves without servility; he has fought without enmity.
There is nothing so powerful, nothing less violent.
There is nothing so quick, nothing more patient.

hi Gizmo & Stewball
Good Morning, HC is so S L O W, sorry I wasn't on yesterday, it was a budy day. We had my brother and his family for dinner. Robbie, my brother helps me a lot with computer issues, and I like to have them for dinner once in a while to say thanks. My sister in law suggested turning the radio off at night, that maybe Charlie finds it distracting, it's worth a try, but I think most folks leave a radio on? I always have. Someone else suggested opening the stall door and making it one large area. I don't like that idea, Sterly will have no where to go if Charlie is being a goofball. I hope the pads work. Have a great weekend, we voted, Love Donna Lee

The more we rode the better Whiskey got at reining. The more miles and trails the easier it got on me and him. I discovered Whiskey loves the water. The picture today was taken 8/2012. We can get in a few minutes but I have to move him out or he will try to lie down, but I can take him right back in and then he settles to stand, doesn’t swim yet with me. We are still working toward that. We haven’t camped out in nearly 2 years, and that is when I can try to swim with the horses. It’s too hard to try swimming when I day ride because of the drive home (driving wet is no fun) -ha ha =) Deacon is my true water baby-he will actually swim with me and never try to lie down. I have also found that Whiskey hates for any type bug to fly in his face-so needless to say while we ride in the open if there are grass hoppers or butter flies, regular fly’s he tosses his head slightly. It doesn’t bother me now but it used to. Thank you for your support we appreciate it!

whiskey is sending hugs & love
Monday we left off about Whiskey’s color and me with 5 hundred questions for Karla! Here we go…That poor girl had never met me before and I could not shut up :) I then walked over and looked Whiskey right in the eye and he looked back into mine and my heart sunk. His beauty was striking and the color was outstanding. He had a smart, sharpness about him-I’m sure he was thinking “what in the world is she doing”. The ride finally got underway; usually everyone has me ride out front and calls me the trail boss! Deacon is a faster walking horse but can ride in the middle or behind after the first hour or so. Well, here comes Rio & Whiskey with their smooth selves!!! They just gaited their smooth self’s right past me & Deacy. I watched Whiskey and noticed he didn’t quite move the same as Rio but still a difference from a QH. 2 hours into the ride we decided to rest a few minutes in a place we call “Carol’s lounge”. We have names for all our spots we ride to rest or to take a break out there because it’s so big. Thank you for your support we appreciate it!

Whiskey would love your support for his HOTM run
In 2008 the decision was made after a talk with our boy’s and Cliff. It was time for me to get back on my horse journey. I purchased Deacon in March 23, 2008 and then bought Whiskey in May 2010. When I run Deacon I will tell more about the 1st 2 years back on my journey. Now that you have some back ground on me and my journey I will start Whiskey’s story with me. As many of you know I trail ride and use to camp with the horses all the time, now we just day ride. Hoping this spring sometime to camp again-fingers crossed =) It has been 2 years sense we have camped out with them. We would camp at Mccown or Plowman Valley at Lake Whitney Texas or at Reynolds Creek Lake Waco, Texas. During those times I have met a lot of people and their different type of horses. On one Oct. weekend we had some friends of Bill’s that was coming that I had never met. I asked Bill as we all were getting our horses ready for our ride that day, what type horses did these friends have? He said Rocky Mountain horses…I said hummmm, never heard of that breed. The thoughts in my head about this breed had me so curious. Now tomorrow we are into his story fully….hang in there! Thank you for your support we appreciate it!

I will explain how I came about choosing my Whiskey and Deacon so it takes us Wwway back~~~~~ lol ~ I got out of the Navy in 1986. I knew I wanted to get a horse at the time and I wanted to try barrel racing. I had a friend in California (last place I was stationed) that was running the circuit barrel racing and a boyfriend riding bulls so I guess that is what made me want to try barrels. I really just wanted a horse to care for and ride because I loved them so much. I moved back to Texas and started my search. I met a lady where I started working that raised quarter horses and she had a beautiful dark bay mare that I started riding, her name was Fanny. She was very gentle and easy to handle. My sister said I could put a fence up on her property and use their garage to convert into a stall and storage area. So I went to work with a few friends and converted this place and added one stall and a tack area. It took a few months to get everything ready so the lady let me make payments. Once she was paid off, and the property was ready I brought her home with me. Things just didn’t work out for Fanny & me. I’m sure you all can relate to the fact that some horses and humans are not a match. That is how it was with her, just didn’t feel right. The hunt was on and a new year began 1987 ~ Thank you for your support we appreciate it!

Generally healthy horses, they often live long lives but do have a tendency to be extremely "easy keepers". Care must be taken to keep your Rockies from becoming too overweight, particularly in their later years.* Thank you for your support we appreciate it!

It was so windy after work yesterday but it was 65. I didn’t want to wet manes and tails mainly because I didn’t want to get wet! High winds again today but nearly 70 this afternoon. We will see if I can fit it in. Rocket will get to go along again tomorrow. I have a dear friend riding with me so Rocket will enjoy getting out. Whiskey is the chosen one for me. CAN'T WAIT FOR SPRING....
Good morning my friends, sending chilly, snowy greetings. I want you all to know just how much we appreciate the love and support. Trevor has completed 3 weeks of treatments. He still has his amazing attitude, but there is no question it is taking a toll on him and of course the rest of us. David looks terrible, I always thought my husband was a very handsome man, but right now he looks exhausted and worried. Trev's hearing is going, especially high pitch, he has pain, his mouth and throat are very sore, eating is difficult and he says food doesn't really taste anyway. It is almost a full time job to keep track of his appointments and his med schedules. He lost some hair and of course he is very tired. His next big whack of chemo is Monday so he has the weekend to phych up for feeling really crappy...As for me, Charlie, Sterly and all the other four footed critters, we are hanging in. Cisco
Thank you all!!!! I will never know everything Cisco has been through, and I don't want to know. All I know for sure is his tongue had nearly been severed in half, probably either from a really harsh bit or having his head tied around, and his R eye socket fractured (again, don't wanna know). Steve said he's pretty sure at some point someone attempted to train Cisco to buck, to this day he WILL NOT tolerate a flank cinch. I believe that Cisco was loved and treated well early on, then things just went south for him. I'm also sure he's been through mutiple sales, with his striking looks and proud manner always finding a buyer that's sure he would be the one to "fix" him. I remember Steve telling me at one point that Cisco wasn't only PTSD, but MPD (multiple personality disorder) and probably Bi-polar to boot. One thing everyone has remarked on wherever we go, is how Cisco watches for me. Whenever I am in sight, his eyes follow me. It's an awesome feeling to have that kind of connetion with a horse. Eventually, I think Cisco would have been on one of those one-way trips to Canada or Mexico, instead we plan on continuing our adventures...

REALLY APPRECIATE ALL THE SUPPORT, THANKS! Steve and Amanda returned to Texas last summer, and Cali, Mystic and Cinco went home to their new training facility. I have been out for a few lessons, and a clinic they did in November. Cisco did well, and was voted by the clinic participants the easiest horse to do groundwork with (he had us switch and do some groundwork with each other's horses). Joe, my farrier stopped in to watch for a while, and when he was out next he told me that while he knew I had been riding and doing clinics with Cisco, he couldn't believe how calm he was. He remembered watching Steve work with him in the "early days" PS - found Gizmo on Whinny Warz yesterday.

AND RIDING...
THANKS FOR ALL THE VOTES. Rest of our trail ride was uneventful, except for the heat(high 90's) and for one rider who started to get heat stroke. Christy was able to get hold of her husband (cell service iffy there) and he drove out and picked her up, and her horse was also ponied back. We went through some pretty steep ravines and overgrown trails (to shorten the distance, we cut through on a hiking trail). When we got back, I was so glad to get OUT of the saddle. I think Cisco was just as glad to have me out of the saddle! We had been out over 9 hours. I stayed over that Sunday night at the B&B, and Cisco and I got a good night's rest before heading home. I had put in 38 hours in the saddle in 5 days, and Cisco had to have his cinch taken up 2 notches by the end!

We Keep Riding...
REALLY APPRECIATE ALL THE SUPPORT, THANKS! We had a great, if slightly late, lunch on the trail. As we were starting back, Christy (owner of the B&B), realized she had misjudged the trail and we were still 3-4 hours out. At this point, 2 people opted out and left when the lunch truck went back (one horse was ponied, the other ridden back by Trevor's wife). I decided to hang in there. Everyone wanted to trot to get back sooner, and the 2 horses ahead of us hit out in a long trot. Cisco decided to really move out and catch them, and I realized I was too tired to post. When I pulled him up, it was rodeo time! He got in 4-5 bucks (he was REALLY mad), before I was able to yield his hindquarters and settle him down. Trevor commented "I thought you liked to dance!" (Earlier, I had been moving his hindquarters back & forth in a kind of rumba). Replied "Dancing is one thing, jitterbugging is something else".

THE LONG RIDE...
THANKS, EVERYONE! Was supposed to go on a moonlight ride, but I was getting pretty tired, so passed on the ride that night (we had been spending 8 hours in the saddle every day). The last day, Sunday, we were to do 4-5 hour trail ride, with a lunch break out on the trail. Cisco handled everything beautifully, EXCEPT for the wooden bridge over a ravine. He walked up to it like he was going over, then simply planted his feet (4 feet in concrete!) and refused to budge. It took the clinician a half hour, and then Cisco walked across calmly. I had offered to dismount, but was told no, he needed to learn to go over whatever I asked him to. (That was the only thing he tried to refuse the whole 5 days)

Jumping & Swimming
The fourth day, we went out to the jump course, and worked on that for a while. I had never liked jumping Cisco, he would launch himself like he was jumping 5' over a 1' obstacle, but after working for a couple of hours, including having to meet oncoming riders over the jumps, he was doing so well; jumping just enough to clear the obstacle. We did a short trail ride, then broke for lunch (there was a 4 hr break each day to avoid the heat). That afternoon, we all took the horses for a swim in the tank (pond). Several of us had been taking the horses down to cool off in the water during the afternoons. I needed a little help getting on him bareback, and was pretty wobbly at first but Cisco actually moved to stay under me. Walked out in the water till it got deep, and then we were swimming. Cisco loved it, he groaned the entire time he was swimming like he does when having a good roll. That was only my 2nd time on him bareback, and the first time I had ever been on a swimming horse. Passed on the moonlight ride that night, too tired.

ONE WEEK DOWN, SIX TO GO...
Good Morning All, thanks to everyone for the prayers and good positive thoughts, we really appreciate it. It has been a horrible week, Trevor's schedule is every day except Saturday and Sunday, so one week down, 6 to go. Monday was a huge blast of chemo as well as radiation, and by Wednesday he was feeling pretty terrible, he was prepared, so it is not a shock, and he knows it will get worse before it gets better, pray it gets better....they told him that his hearing may be affected because of the location of the tumor, he may loose his hearing, it has started to be affected already, if he does loose it, they say it is permanent. COWS!
THANKS SO MUCH! Quickly learned that Cisco was fine with being ridden twice a day, he was always waiting for me at the gate to his paddock, it was like "Are we going to have more fun? What are we going to do next?" Next day, we started cow work after warming up. The 20 or so cows were brought in the arena, and we just rode around letting the horses get used to them, as some of them had never been around cows before. Then we learned how to "boil" the herd (get them in close together and milling), then we individually walked our horses thru and parted the herd. After that, we actually started cutting! Cisco was amazing, he locked on to whichever cow I picked out and stayed with it. That was thrilling. The 3rd day, we trailed the herd out to pasture in the morning, and did some more cutting, then trailed them back to the arena. Went back out in the evening, trailed them out to pasture, and worked cattle until the full moon came out, then continued working till nearly 10PM. Brought the cattle back in, and called it a night. Cisco LOVED it.

A BIG Step
Cannot believe how much support we are getting, thanks! Our next BIG step was a 5 day Parelli Horse Camp last June. I wasn't sure I could ride that much, but decided to go anyway. The first day was spent mostly on ground work and arena work, making sure everyone could sidepass, back at least 10 steps, and do rollbacks, and walk, trot and canter quietly. We also played some games, notably trying to keep another horse and ride from reaching the opposite side of the arena. It rained that afternoon, so we learned some knot tying before going back out to ride that evening. I was nervous when I found out that we would be riding twice daily, wasn't sure how Cisco would feel about that. We would ride in the morning, take a break in the heat of the day, then go out after an early supper and ride till dark or after (full moon week).

No More Bucking
THANKS FOR YOUR VOTES & SUPPORT!!! The Chiropractor pretty much adjusted everything, and said that the horse had been in pain for quite a while. Really made me feel badly - at least some of training problems I'm sure were related to him being in pain. He had also started bucking when asked to canter, this has resolved. And also, while he had gotten pretty good about his feet, he always really fussed about his L hind being done. He has been much better, even my farrier has remarked on what a change it has made. Cisco will usually now lift a hoof as soon as you bend down. The Chiropractor also pointed out that Cisco's R eye orbit had been fractured - and when you really look at him head on, his R eye is sunken a bit.

A Job Offer
THANKS, EVERYONE!!! Early last spring, we went to a clinic put on by the head trainer/farrier of a large metropoliton mounted police force (Houston). It was an ART Clinic: Attention, Respect,Trust. Did a lot of groundwork and obstacles in the mornings (including firecrackers while mounted) and then trail rode in the afternoons. At the end of the clinic, he asked if Cisco was for sale. When I told him no, he said that if I ever wanted to sell him or couldn't take care of him, would I please contact him, that Cisco would make a good police horse. I remarked that Cisco was too short and colored, and he replied "If I say he's tall enough, he's tall enough, and we are an equal opportunity employer". He also strongly suggested that I have Cisco seen by a chiropractor, which I did and it really has helped him.

I try flying!
Wow, love Gizmo's background! THANKS FOR YOUR VOTES & SUPPORT!!! In February of last year, Cisco became very nervous when I was riding in the pasture. There was a lot going on in the neighbor's pasture, it was very windy, and it was almost the last straw when Cinco decided to come see us. I shooed him away, then went to the south side of the pasture to ride. Cisco spooked at something and spun, and I didn't. Hate that feeling of waiting for the ground to come up. Lay there for a few seconds, wondering what was broke. Nothing seemed to hurt, so I got up, caught Cisco, and remounted (he was a little nervous - wondered if I was going to do that flying trick again, LOL). Rode for another half hour or so. When I removed my helmet (which I didn't always wear) I discovered it was nearly cracked in two. Now I never ride without one.

thanks for supporting Angel Sassy Mac HOTM
Thanks to everyone that voted us HOTD, we are so excited, we are getting close to the end of the month, I still have lots of story to tell. We left you a vote this afternoon. When things started to go wrong, at first I didn't know what the issue was, mostly because it was not consistent, some days everything was great but other times it was like Mackie had two left front feet. I can't describe it any other way, he stumbled quite a bit, I know lots of horses stumble on occasion, but remember, I knew this horse, and this was not just a stumble. We had his farrier check him, we checked saddle fit, we looked at teeth, we had corrective shoeing done to help with breakover. The strange thing was it was not all the time, I lunged him and tried to see it, it was like he didn't know where to put his feet. Years earlier Dr. Cook gave me a book entitled Lameness in Horses, he has since lived to regret that....I read that book everyday, and when it got to where I felt we needed Dr. Cooks expertise, I called him and said "can you come and look at Mackie? I think he has navicular" Talk soon, Love Donna Lee

we need your vote, please
Good Morning, here is a vote and a wish that everyone had a wonderful Christmas Day. Thank You so much for HOTD, this will help us on our HOTM journey.
Mackie had just turned 9 in the spring of 2004 and I brought him home in August, the next spring we dealt with all the health issues, which we overcame. Spring 2006 came and believe me I was terrified about his vaccinations. Dr. Cook had decided to premedicate plus we broke them up and did them over a few days rather than all at once. I watched him like a hawk, I bet I took his temp on the hour...poor Mackie. All went well, our riding also went well, we were working so well together, I had him doing small courses of just xrails, but still it was great fun. I had managed to put a few pounds on him, race horses tend to be a bit too slim for me. Life was good. funny how it can change so quickly. Love Donna Lee & Mackie

we left a vote today
We are trying to get our votes and blogs done before we lose power, we had freezing rain all night and forecast for all day too, yuk. Thanks again for supporting us, we love it. When spring arrived I could not wait to get my boy going, we had a wonderful winter of just getting to each other. His movement was much different than Sterl May, I posted a couple of pics, he had a lovely long stride. He was smooth even at trot. Trouble started with his spring vaccinations, first he had a reaction to either tetanus or rabies, we know because Dr. Cook, gave both of those in the hip, and the West Nile in the neck. Mackie seemed off within hours of the shot, sometimes not uncommon, but by the next morning he was running a temp, and he was not wanting to move. We tried hot compresses, but when he started to swell at the injection site, Dr. Cook came and we started him on antibiotics. I called Kathy and she said he had never had an issue.. Remember I said if it wasn't for BAD LUCK I'd have NO LUCK. Well, it got worse, Mackie now had a swelling the size of a soft ball on his rump, and he was getting 2 injections a day of the meds. On the second day, didn't he react to the antibiotic, YES HE DID. Next step, Dr. Cook changed the meds and decided that the abscess had to be opened. When the pressure was released, it literally expolded in Dr. Cooks face, and it hit the ceiling of the barn, that must have felt so good for Mackie. This procedure had to be done twice and there were almost daily visits from Dr. Cook, remember it isn't about the money... cha ching....We finally got this mess all cleared up and decided that he would have to be premeditated before any vaccination in the future. Have a great day, talk soon, Love Donna Lee & Mackie
