Did you partake in any horse event during this first few days of 2013? It has been a bit muddy in our yard, so we have not :( I enjoyed the rains, and the quiet times that came with it. Into the new year with a vote ♥ COWBOY & TRIGGER, the Young Prince & King of January: I called Cowboy into the room and told him to read the computer screen. He read it and he said smiled. I asked him if he knew what it meant. He said Trigger won HOTD. I told him no, read it again. He asked me what is HOTM. I explained to him that means Horse Of the Month. He was very excited as he told me in his own 11 year old words that HOTM was a great surprise in addition to his birthday being Monday! Trigger was his usual calm ole self, just mellow and go lucky, and trying to get along with miss Bossy Pants, Fancy. Cowboy and Trigger send thanks for voting them Jan HOTM. I could not figure out who left their landmark votes. Any way we thank each of you for every vote! LITTLE COWBOY CLASS/ Word of the day: Youngstock - A general term used for all equines old enough to bite, kick or run you over, but not yet old enough to dump you on the ground. FANCY'S PERCEPTIONS, Into the New Year: "The new year lies before you, like a spot less tract of snow. Be careful how you tread on it, for every mark will show." FANCY'S PERCEPTIONS, Let There Be Peace: Please keep the Sandy Hook Elementary School community in Newtown, Connecticut in prayer. Also pray for the safety of all children, for evil does not respect boundaries. Matthew 2:16-18 16 Then Herod, when he saw that he was deceived by the wise men, was exceedingly angry; and he sent forth and put to death all the male children who were in Bethlehem and in all its districts, from two years old and under, according to the time which he had determined from the wise men. 17 Then was fulfilled what was spoken by Jeremiah the prophet, saying: 18 "A voice was heard in Ramah, Lamentation, weeping, and great mourning, Rachel weeping for her children, Refusing to be comforted, Because they are no more." Friesian Horse History The Friesian horse is unique, truly a breed to be proud of. It developed from a very old breed which was inherent to all of western Europe. It's the only horse native to Holland. Historically speaking, the Friesian horse has been influenced by eastern bloodlines and has often been threatened with extinction. The armored knights found the Friesian Horse very desirable, having the strength, courage and heart to carry great weight and still maneuver precisely, in the face of the enemy. The Hungarian King Louis II used a Friesian Stallion on the battlefield on June 15, 1526. The Friesian was used as a war horse by Friesian Soldiers fighting with the Roman Armies, and later was used by knights and traveled all the way to the Middle East with the Crusaders. The suppleness and agility of the Friesian Horse became sought after in the riding schools of Paris and Spain in the 15th and 16th centuries. In the middle ages, it was mainly a knight's horse, but in the 18th and 19th century the Friesian was especially famous as a trotting horse on short distances. The Friesian was so adapted as a fast trotting coach horse that it was, in fact, Friesians who invented trotting races over short distances during the 18th century. At one time, the amount of registered Friesian Horses became even less than one thousand and the fate of the breed was uncertain. In fact, the number of Friesian Stallions reputedly was reduced to ONLY three, prior to World War I. Thanks to the single-mindedness and dauntless dedication of true Friesian horse lovers and Breeders in Friesland, a northern province of Holland, one can still appreciate the many facets of the Friesian horse today Question of the day: What is one skill that you would like your horse to learn? I would like to teach Dakota to pull a cart, but unfortunately I do not have a cart or a harness. You only have a few days left to vote for Dakota, and winning HOTM would mean so much to us so please come vote for him! HISTORY OF THE GYPSY VANNER What were the reasons for breeding a small draft horse such as the Gypsy Horse? One such reason, to have a horse showy enough to complement the brightly colored wagons driven by the Gypsy breeders, was given above. But the Gypsy Horse was not just for show; he performed a vital function—pulling his family’s wagon. For this type of work, a heavy draught horse such as the Shire, which typically stands between 16.2 and 17.2 hands and weighs between 2,240 and 2,688 lbs, was overkill. Even the smaller Clydesdale was too much horse for this task. An even smaller draft horse such as the Gypsy Horse was capable of performing the work needed and required only a fraction of the feed needed to maintain the massive Shire. This need to create a draft horse capable of performing the relatively light work of pulling a wagon and needing minimal feed was the primary reason for the creation of the horse we call the Gypsy Horse. While the Gypsy Horse was bred for the road, the nomadic life of the road further shaped him, both physically and mentally. By necessity, he was hardy, thriving on uncertain forage found at campsites as the Gypsy caravans traveled from place to place. These campsites most likely provided no shelter for the horses; his profuse mane, tail, and feathers provided protection from the cold and wet. He was an integral part of his family and so had to be tolerant and kind. He had to able to be handled and managed even by the family’s children. Any horse which behaved aggressively was immediately banished. The American discoverers of the breed were Dennis and Cindy Thompson. While driving through the English countryside in 1994, they glimpsed an extravagantly feathered black and white stallion and stopped to inquire about him. Two years later, they imported the first two Gypsy Horse mares, and founded the Gypsy Vanner Horse Society, one of the breed's registries. Other registries include the Gypsy Horse Association, the Gypsy Cob and Drum Horse Association, and the Gypsy Cob Society of America. The Thompsons coined the name “Vanner” for this imported breed, and intended the name to refer not to all Gypsy-bred horses, but only to those which they felt embodied the vision of the breed’s originators, whom they sought to honor. Some lovers of this breed choose not to use the name “Vanner”, but rather prefer to use one of the other accepted names for the breed, Gypsy Cob or Gypsy Horse. Question of the day: If you could change one thing about your horse, what would it be? Have a great weekend! HISTORY OF THE MORGAN( REQUESTED BY KOKO) In the coming years, the offspring of these strong, willing, able light horses grew along with the young nation that was building itself upon hard work and determination. In the hands of American colonists, Morgans cleared rugged Vermont mountainsides and converted them into rich farmland. But they weren't mere workhorses, Morgans had the style and elegance to capture the admiration of any city horseman. While some Morgans earned their keep on the farm others were in high demand to become smart roadsters for Boston and New York financiers. When harness racing reached its heyday in the 1800s, the World's Fastest Trotting Stallion was Ethan Allen 50, old Justin's handsome great-grandson. As America grew so did the feats of the Morgan. New England men answered the call of gold and headed for California on Morgans. In the Civil War, the famed Vermont Cavalry was mounted on Morgan horses. Not only did the Union's General Sheridan ride his Morgan Rienzi, Stonewall Jackson rode his Morgan, 'Little Sorrel,' for the Confederacy as well! In the Indian Wars, the only survivor in the Battle of the little Big Horn was Keogh's Morgan-bred horse Comanche. If the pathways of history are paved with the bones of the horse, surely America's are paved by Morgans. Question of the day: Do you blanket your horses during the wintertime? I have never blanketed my horses and probably never will, but I know it makes a different if your horses are clipped. Well, my goal for Dakota was to get 600 votes during the month of October, and thanks to you and all my other wonderfull HC friends he has already exceded his goal. I am hoping to see the big number 1,000 soon but I need your help so please come vote for my little guy! Thanks so much for all your support! I had a great Horsey day with Sadie. She's was so good. She even lifted 3 of her hooves for me to pick them. I had to work with the left front one until she gave in. Didn't take long. When I dismounted after our ride, my legs were tired from being out of shape. Felt like noodles. It's a good tired, tho'. Hugs and a vote. HISTORY OF THE MORGAN( REQUESTED BY KOKO) Over the next 30 years, the little bay stallion worked long, hard hours in the fields and on the roads of Vermont. Gradually, the local population began to talk about the feats of "the Justin Morgan horse". Standing just over 14 hands tall, Justin Morgan's exploits gained him fame because he was not as big as colonial workhorses nor as tall and long-legged as racehorses, yet he consistently outperformed both. There was the time he pulled a log no draft horse could budge, the day only he had the beauty, spirit and manners to carry President James Monroe on a muster-day parade ground; and the time he outran the most winning racehorse central Vermont had ever known, at least until that day. Doing it all and doing it well, Justin Morgan remained sound of eye, wind, and limb throughout a lifetime of two ordinary horses. That should have been enough, but the stallion added still more: showy, ground-covering gaits with speed to spare at any one of them; a gentle disposition that made him safe enough for a child to handle yet spirited enough for any horseman, beauty men would to recall decades after his death; and a rare courage that made men who lost bets on him hit their flagons of rum and say, 'To the little Morgan!' and drink deeply. Hi, how was your weekend? I had a pretty good weekend, a bit dreary though. We finally got some rain, not very much, but enough to at least wet the dust down. Of course when the ground gets a little bit muddy the horses have to roll, so I got them all brushed out. Thankfully Sierra doesn't roll very often yet. Question of the day: If it is raining outside, would your horse rather stay out in the pasture or come into the barn? Misty doesn't usually mind being out in the rain, but Sierra is a bit of a weenie and will run to her shed if she feels a few drops of rain. Dakota will usually stay out in his pasture unless it is really storming. Have a great Sunday and dont forget to vote Dakota for your Nov. HOTM! Maria, Dakota N the girls PS.There is a bird named Chaka#215291 over on birdchannel that has been voting for Dakota, and he would like me to spread the word that he is running for BOTM. The Morgan Horse - An American Legend Justin Morgan was a living legend. In the manner of so many heroes, he began as an unremarkable colt and became the father of an entire breed of horses recognized for quality and dependability. Born in 1789, Justin Morgan started life as a small, rough-coated colt known as "Figure." In 1791, he left his birthplace in Springfield, Massachusetts with his new owner, the soft-spoken schoolteacher Justin Morgan, by whose name the stallion eventually became known. Although his breeding was unknown (thought to be of Dutch, Thoroughbred, or Arabian breeding), the quality of Justin Morgan's ancestry showed in his straight clean legs; deep muscling over his quarters and shoulders; and fine, intelligent head with large expressive eyes and short, pricked ears. Add to these the quality of his movement, a thick but silky mane and tail, and a clean-cut throatlatch, and you have the conformation of the ideal light horse. Despite these fine qualities, Justin Morgan's lack of size was such that his debt-ridden owner found no buyers on their journey north to Randolph Center, Vermont. It was simply fate that no one but, his new owner realized what a little giant he was. Question of the day: When buying a horse, how important is color? Color really isn't really a factor for me, I care more about the horse's personality, however I do really like paints. I hope you are enjoying your weekend, and once again thanks a million for all your support! BREED HISTORY OF THE CANADIAN HORSE(REQUESTED BY HARDWIN) The Canadian Horse is a little known national treasure of Canada. This hardy breed descended from horses originally sent to the “New World” by King Louis XIV of France in the late 1600’s. These Norman and Breton horses were felt to be of Arab, Andalusian and Barb ancestry – traits of which can still be recognized in the Canadian Horse today. For hundreds of years, the French horses bred with little influence from outside breeds. They eventually developed into their own distinct breed - the Canadian Horse or Cheval Canadien. Because they evolved under the adverse conditions of harsh weather, scarce food, and hard work, the Canadian Horse remains the sturdiest and most acclimatized horse in Canada today. They are tough, strong horses, tolerant of inclement weather conditions, and are extremely “easy keepers”. Because of these traits, the Canadian Horse is often referred to as “The Little Iron Horse”. Wow has it ever warmed up around here! Yesterday we had upper 70s but I dont think it is going to last very long. Yesterday some people came over to my aunts place to help her with some yard work( my aunt lives a very short distance from us). They had a couple kids that wanted pony rides so I brought Dakota over for them to ride and thay had a lot of fun. Question of the day: Wich of the following is your horse most likely to spook at? A. A loud vehicle passing nearby. B. A vehicle moving in the far distance. C. A plastic bag flapping in the wind. D. A rustling noise coming from tall grass. My HC pals are awesome and I hope you have a great day! Maria, Dakota N the girlsCome visit me, ~Sierra~ thank u Whiskey & Deacon for vote 1,400!!, ♦Misty♦, Dakota, <>Cherokee<> & ~Scout~RIP~.

HISTORY OF THE ARABIAN The modern Arabian, though no longer a warhorse subject to the cruel and unforgiving environment of the Arabian Desert, remains a breed of horse richly abounding in the qualities that made his ancestor a survivor. Above all, the Arabian horse was bred to serve his master, whose very life depended on the bravery, faithfulness and swiftness of his steed. These intrinsic merits as a synergistic whole define the breed as distinctly Arabian, comprising the essential elements of the authentic Arabian horse. Perhaps, best described as a cross between an Olympic gymnast and a champion long distance runner, the Arabian horse is unrivalled as an athlete in the equine world. The defining characteristics of the Arabian horse are most often those that have historically been in highest demand by horse breeders of the civilized world down through the centuries. As the original racehorse, the Arabian was crucial to the foundation of the Thoroughbred, contributing the ability to run at great speeds over vast distances with courage, tenacity and superior physical fortitude. Arabians put the “hot” in the “hot-blood”, and all horses considered as such are largely Arabian in origin. The superior density, structure and quality of bone along with balance and harmony of proportion are unrivalled in the equine world and have been highly sought after in all equine breeds in which athleticism is of primary importance. Superior beauty, quality and refinement have always been distinct Arabian traits – all warm-blooded horses inherit these aesthetically pleasing and spiritually inspiring attributes from the horse of the Nejd. Question of the day: Do you put up your own horse hay or do you have to buy it? My dad is a farmer, so we put up our own hay. Usually during the wintertime we run out and have to buy some, but this year the weather conditions for putting up hay were really good and we have lots and lots of A1 horsehay. I hope you all enjoyed your weekend, remember to vote Dakota for your Nov. HOTM! Vote #691 for Buddy! It was such a wonderful surprise to see Luna had been voted HOTD yesterday...and she wasn't even running for it! I gave her extra carrots, of course. I went riding yesterday, but afterwards I tried something I saw in a YouTube video. I started teaching her to "shake hands" (or hoofs? LOL). She started getting the idea of what I want after about 15 minutes. She doesn't offer up a hoof on command yet, but she started lifting her hoof towards me (instead of backwards, as if I was going to clean the hoof)and letting me hold it as long as I like. So that's progress, and today I will repeat until she gets it. It's just a stupid trick, but it's fun! It's getting real cold around here now, but that won't keep me away from Luna. Is it getting cold in Indiana yet? Have a horsey day! Voted. ---Cindy and LunaCome visit me, Wizard & ~Luna~.

Brrr, it was cold and windy again yesterday, but this morning it looks like the wind finally died down. Yesterday I didnt do any riding, I just did some groundwork with Sierra.I have been teaching her to back out my space by wiggling the leadrope, and she is getting pretty good at it, except I cant seem to get her to back up straight. When I wiggle the leadrope she pulls her head to the side and backs up sideways.I have tried bumping her head back around every time she pulls it away, but then as soon as I ask her to back up, she just pulls it away again. Does anyone have any tips for me on how to get her to back up straight? If you do, they would be much appreciated. Question of the day: How often do you ride your horse, and for how long? I ussually ride every other day, and for about an hour and a half at a time.(Of course this varies) Please continue to support Dakota during his HOTM run! Leaving votes for everyone! Week two of the HOTM run, Woohoo! Question of the day: Has your horse ever been in a near death situation and lived to tell about it? ( or rather whinnny about it) A long time ago when my fencer wasnt working Dakota used to break out of his fence all the time, and several times ran down the middle of a busy tar road near our place, but never got hit. Another time he was inside his 3-sided shed when a tornado picked it up and completely demolished it, and somehow never got a scratch. If your horse has ever been in a near death situation, I would love to hear about it! Thanks for all the support! Hey guys, how was your weekend? Did you get to do any riding? Yesterday I didnt do any riding, I just did some groundwork with my guys. They are just starting to get their winter woolies, and not too soon either, it has been very chilly and and windy for the past few days, I even saw a few snowflakes yesterday! Well I said I would have a question for you guys, so here it is: If you were to be able to go to a tack store of your choice and pick out one item out of the entire store for free, what would you choose? I would definently get a new saddle as both of mine are pretty old. I look forward to hearing your answers! HISTORY OF THE WELSH COB, SECTION D, CONTINUED The Welsh Cob is a strong, general purpose animal with free forceful movement. He should show great quality and have as much substance as possible without being coarse. Welsh Cobs have spirit and inner fire, however this is tempered by a gentle, kindly disposition and a willingness to obey. These attributes, combined their stamina and proud, aristocratic bearing make them the natural choice of many discriminating horsemen of all ages. The Welsh Cob made an outstanding contribution to man; both in war and in peace. During 1845, Henry Tudor ascended the throne of England due to the efforts of the Welsh Cob militia mounted on their swift and hardy Welsh Cobs.Up until 40 or 50 years ago the Welsh Cobs was so valuable to the British war office that premiums were payed to the best stallions. The War Office used Welsh Cobs for the mounted infantry and for pulling heavy guns and equipment through rugged, mountainous terrain noy easily surmounted by motorized vehicles. The Morgan horse almost certainy owes his origin to the Welsh Cobs left behind in America by the British Cavalry at the end of the 18th century. In peacetime, prior to the advent of motorised vehicles, the Welsh Cob proved to be the quickest, most reliable transport for docters and businessmen. Recent importations from Great Britain have sparked an active interest in these animals across North America. As did their ancestors, the modern day Welsh Cob and Welsh Pony of Cob Type truly personify the words of the motto on the Welsh Coat of Arms-Ich Dien-"I Serve". THIS IS PROBABLY THE LAST BLOG I WILL BE DOING ON WELSH PONIES AND COBS, I HOPE YOU HAVE ENJOYED THEM! I WILL HAVE A QUESTION OF THE DAY FOR YOU GUYS TOMMOROW, THANKS AGAIN FOR ALL THE SUPPORT! PS. HISTORY OF THE WELSH COB, SECTION D A Section C is a Welsh Mountain Pony of Cob Type, and Section D is the Welsh Cob. The main difference between the two is size. The Welsh Pony of Cob Type resulted from a crossbreeding between the Welah Mountain Pony and the Welsh Cob.The Welsh Cob was probably the result of a crossbreeding between the Welsh Mountain Pony and the horses brought by the Romans to Britain. Welsh ponies have run wild on the hills, valleys and mountains of Wales for centuries;over the years the Welsh ponies developed into several different types. Farmers and shepherds who needed a fast mount that could easily traverse the the rough terrain favouredthe larger ponies, the smaller ponies were used extensively in the coalmines in the 19yh and 20th centuries. In the aftermath of the industrial revolution, th Welsh Cob was a popular form of transport for those who had to travel for business. From there a whole industry emerged, with trotting races a popular method of selecting the best bloodlines when breeding ponies for transport. In South Wales, a 35 mile uphill route was used, many ponies would complete the race in under 3 hours. Aptly described as "the best ride and drive animal in the world", the Welsh Cob has evolved throughout many centuries for his courage, tractability and powers of endurance. The general character is the embodiment of strength, hardiness and agility. The head shows great quality with pony character: bold prominent eyes, a broad forehead and neat, wellset ears. The body must be deep, on strong limbs with "hard wearing" joints and an abundance of flat bone. Action must be straight, free and forceful, the knees should be bent and then the whole foreleg extended from the shoulders as far as possiblein all places, with the hocks well flexed, producing powerful leverage. The Welsh Cob is a good hunter and a most competent performer in all competitive sports. In recent years they have had great success in the international driving world. Their abilities in all spheres are now fully recognised throughout the world. YEAH, DAKOTA HAS GOTTEN OVER 100 VOTES SO FAR, THANK YOU HC PALS! THE WELSH PONY OF COB TYPE SECTION C The Welsh pony of Cob Type is a stronger counterpart of the Welsh Mountain pony but with Cob blood. Their true worth as a dual purpose animal has been fully realized in recent years and their numbers have increased accordingly. Active, sure-footed and hardy they are ideal for so many purposes, both for aadults and children. Ideal for competetive events, both under saddle and in harness, a sure-footed mount for pony trekking and hunting. As there are few things they cannot do, a Welsh Pony of Cob Type, Section C, is the perfect all-around family pony. His origin is well documented; beginning in Medieval times when he was described as "being fleet of foot, a good jumper, a good swimmer and able to carry a substantial weight on his back". He was part of the essential string of mounts for a British Knight. A Welsh Cob, 'rouncy', was used to lead the mighty fighting horses, known as 'destries', whose natural gait was the trot. The Welsh Cob had to cover great distances, matching the great war horse stride for stride. To this day the forceful, ground-covering trot of the Welsh Cob is legendary. Thanks soo much everyone for supporting my Welsh Mountain pony Dakota during his HOTM run so far! I hope everyone is enjoying their week! WELSH PONY SECTION B The general description of the Welsh pony section b can be described simply as a larger version of the Welsh Mountain pony section A, with greater emphasis on on riding pony action and ability, while retaining true Welsh type. The Welsh Section B has been selectively bred from the Welsh Mountain pony, and is generally taller and lighter in build. First bred to meet the demand of a larger riding type for Welsh hill farmers; Who needed a means of transport for shepherding across the hills, cattle herding, and rounding up wild mountain ponies. Their uses even extended to riding to stock fairs and taking part in pony races. It is thought that infusions of Thoroughbred and Hackney blood were used to create this type. In 1911, it was decided to ban Hackney bloodlines from registering into the stud book; There had been several incidences of pure Hackneys competing and winning at National Welsh pony shows. The Welsh Section B has excellent riding pony qualities, combined with good temperament and natural athletic jumping ability. They make an ideal choice of pony for the competitive child to excel in any sphere: from jumping, endurance to driving, as well as being able to hold their own among top class riding ponies in the show ring.
