FANCY'S PERCEPTIONS:
“Autumn, the year's last, loveliest smile” (William Cullen Bryant)

Q: Why do potatoes make good detectives?
A: Because they keep their eyes peeled.

Today's photo was taken September 28, 2011. Fancy is performing the only trick that I know I have taught her. I say stump and she will put her front feet onto that old tree stump.

How was your weekend? We enjoyed a nice cool Carolina weekend here. Fancy's hooves had grown out and were beginning to chip, so I decided to try my hand at rasping. I had the tools for over a year, but I was afraid to try. I looked up how to trim hooves on youtube and I did it! I did as little as possible since it was my first time. Made my back hurt, but no more chipping hooves for now. I was very glad they didn't need to be trimmed, only shaped up. I tell you if you ever try it, you will appreciate a farrier with a strong back, LOL. Have you ever tried to do a horses hooves? If you have, how did you come out on the job?

FANCY'S PERCEPTIONS:
“For man, autumn is a time of harvest, of gathering together. For nature, it is a time of sowing, of scattering abroad.” (Edwin Way Teale)

Please view the video tribute in Horse Vidos: PIXIE DUST: IN MEMORY OF JOANNA, which was submitted by Pippin's family (profile #11626) In honor of our friends: Joanna Wicke her horses, Pixie Dust (profile #101958), & Brisco (profile # 140827), and her family.

Fancy is leaving a vote for you this Friday morning.

King Kong was very bad yesterday. King did not want to listen to my brother and my brother's friend wanted to help, so he got on King. While my brother's friend was riding King the horse reared and they fell back. He is ok, only suffered whiplash and soreness. We don't know what got into King. When he reared, there was no bit pressure at all. So he could have moved in any direction and he chose up :(

Fancy was very good. My son has ridden her. He has gotten bored riding in the corral, so we walk around the block and through the car wash. My son loves to ride her. He would like me to turn him lose. But I don't think Fancy or my son are ready for that. Because she is still very young and I know my son does not have experience in case something did frighten her. But so far she has been so wonderful on his rides out. I don't take that for granted and I pray that she remains steady.
What are you up to on the last Friday in September?

Fancy & I love all of our HorseChannel friends and we hope you guys will stop by her page to vote each day in October so Fancy can be your November HOTM.

Fancy is here with a cool first day of Autumn vote!

Has anyone seen the new show, America's Best Trail Horse? I have seen the first two shows. I love it! If you have seen it, what do you think? It kind of reminds me of Craig Cameron's Extreme Cowboy Race.

FANCY'S PERCEPTIONS:
"A friend is one who walks in when others walk out" (Walter Winchell)

Fancy's sliding by in the mud to leave you this Tuesday vote. We hope your holiday weekend was most delightful. Did you enjoy any horsey time? We did nothing here this weekend. Now it is raining off and on☁

Lots of friends asked how I began to teach Fancy to lay down. Here is my comment on that.
1. First you teach the horse to let you handle his front feet. You teach them to let you hold that foot up for long as you want to with out taking it back.
2. Rope breaking helps. I mean throwing the rope all around their body, head, and legs till they are in no way fearful or uncomfy with that feel and touch.
3. You need 2 SOFT ropes. Don't tie, but loop one around the horse's front near pastern (ankle area), you will use this to hold the hoof up only, Make sure this rope never gets tight because it may slow or stop blood flow.
4. Second SOFT rope attaches to the halter as usual, except you run it between the front legs to the off side of your horse and across the back to lay on the same side of his body as the leg you are going to lift.
5. Lift the foot using the rope that is around that foot. Hold still until he is o.k. with that. Hold the foot up at the point that it touches the belly. No tighter than necessary and don't tighten as you go.
6. Teach the bow. Grab the rope that is attached to the halter it should lay just behind the withers and pull slowly and softly until he gives with his nose. His head will tip slightly then he is ready for a bow. He should go back and downward until his knee touches the ground. You have to know your horse. Let him up before he gets upset. Just in case he lays all the way down at this point, keep in mind, which ever way his nose tips is the direction his feet will lay. Stay clear of his feet so you don't get kicked.
7. If he lay down from the bow, you want to rub all over him before he gets up and tell him how great he is!
8. If he didn't lay down from the bow on his own, redo the bow and hold in the bow position and he should lay down. You may need to slightly increase the pressure with the rope that is across his withers. But remember to be very gentle. He should lay down. Depending on the horse, it may take a few times to get all the way down.

Look up Ken McNabb on the internet, his method is very gentle.
I also learned that you do not want to ride a horse up from the ground until it is over 5 years old because it's bones are still growing and you can damage it's developing bone structure, which could lead to future problems.
If I confused you, let me know or look it up on the internet. I hope this has helped.

Also if you know something that will help me with this, please leave me a blog about it!

“Donkey, donkey, old and gray, ope your mouth and gently bray: lift your ears and blow your horn, to wake the world this sleepy morn” (unknown)

My version of Tangalayo (the way we sang it as a child)

My donkey hee, my donkey haw,
My donkey sits on a pile of straw.
My donkey likes to eat the best,
but most of all my donkey like to rest.
Tangalayo, come little donkey come, tangalayo, come little donkey come.
My donkey come, my donkey go,
My donkey, he say yes, but he mean no.
My donkey come to me today,
But might tomorrow go the other way.
Tangalayo, come little donkey come, tangalayo, come little donkey come.

FANCY'S PERCEPTIONS:
The Horse
Where in this wide world can man find nobility without pride,
Friendship without envy,
Or beauty without vanity?
Here, where grace is served with muscle
And strength by gentleness confined
He serves without servility; he has fought without enmity.
There is nothing so powerful, nothing less violent.
There is nothing so quick, nothing more patient.
(Ronald Duncan, "The Horse," 1954)

I tried the bareback mounting again yesterday. Didn't work out. So I used the tractor tire again. Once mounted, Fancy listened very well. We walked around in the corral and even did some leg yields. It was so much fun!

You have a Blessed day and please keep Paula(horse is Lena #216601) in prayer as she handles the loss of her father and travel.

"Features a selective sense of smell: bitterly complains about hubby's sticky sweet cigar smoke, while remaining totally oblivious to the almost visible aroma of her barn boots drying next to the heater.”

Fancy is Whinnying, "Wednesday Vote!" So here it is, right from Fancy herself.

Some of our friends thought Fancy got shoes at the farrier's place. She only had a little trim. Fancy has never worn metal shoes. We are going to try and stay barefoot. I have rubber boots on the way for my Fancy. I can't wait till we get them here. I am excited. I hope she likes them!
Do you use metal shoes, rubber boots, or none at all?

A Tuesday vote from Fancy.
Fancy is enjoying some cooler, cloudy moments through these hot days.

Monday afternoon, I happened to look out the back door, to see Fancy flipping something up and down. I went to see what it was. The first time she has gotten her fly mask off. It is the one with the velcro that folds back to fasten twice. I wonder how she did it. She saw me coming and she was going to show her new found skills of flipping and tossing her fly mask. I told her no and she looked disappointed, but she did not pick it up. LOL.
