Thoroughbred from Lakeside, ON

Royal Mes

About Me

Active within 1 Day

I am from Lakeside, ON and I've been a Club Horse member for 3 years, 10 months and 3 days

Nicknames: His registered name is ROYAL MES we call him Charlie Bubbles, he blows bubbles in his water pail....

Age: 13 years old

Gender: Gelding

Breed: Thoroughbred

Height: 16.3 hands

Color: dark bay

Type of Riding: english riding, some jumping and just pleasure hack. We started dressage spring 2012, it seems to be more our "thing", Charlie can be a bit lazy and although I wanted to jump, he isn't really into it.

My Horse's Achievements: I am proud of Charlie everyday, but what I love about him most is that he has no idea he is TB....He has a very kind heart and would never think of doing anything goofy when you are on his back, his manners are impeccable. He is the reason that Sterl May is still going strong, he keeps her moving when they are outside and when they are in, he is company for her across the stall door. I don't ride in the winter and when I tack him up in the spring he literally acts like I rode him yesterday, such an easy horse. Love him so much, lucky day for me when I found him. He was HOTD October 24, 2011. He was proud to be HOTM April 2012. He got HOTD for a second time October 25, 2012
Charlie was HOTD for 3rd time October 25, 2013
Charlie was HOTD for 4th time October 25, 2014

My Horse's Favorite Treat: carrots, apples, actually anything to eat, his appetite is great, recently found out they both LOVE pears.

My Horse's Favorite Things To Do: he loves to have his neck and belly scratched, he would stand there as long as you could do it.

Pet Peeves: He hates to get wet, eg. the rain, snow, he will tolerate a bath, but it is not fun!!

My Horse's motto: it's all about me, everybody loves Charlie.

How We Met

About 1 1/2 years after the heartbreak of
losing my horse, Sassy Mac (Mackie) due to heart failure, he has a profile page Angel Sassy Mac. I started to look for a new horse with the help of my coach. I looked at probably 25 horses, everything I tried was nice, but nothing really got me excited. Finally my coach told me the problem was I was trying to replace Mackie, and that was never going to happen. She said I had to just pick a horse and fall in love with it after I got it home. I took offence to that remark, I have always believed that when the connection is there, you will know. I was not prepared to "just pick one" so I decided to stop looking for awhile. Two days later my coach called and told me about a horse she wanted me to see. I said NO, she proceded to tell me about him anyway, first, he was only 6, too young, he was a Thoroughbred, I didn't want a Thoroughbred and he was 16.2, he was a bit bigger than I wanted. But she insisted, the horse was fairly close to home, so I agreed to just go and look. I know some of you will understand this, when I walked into his stall and our eyes met. The connection was instant. It was the feeling I had been waiting for. I could not believe it, I forgot that he was big, and a Thoroughbred, I rode him that morning and fell in love. I called our Vet the minute I got home and asked for the pre purchase exam, Charlie was delivered the next week. He is just a very amazing horse. Love at first sight, it does happen!!

Hi Charlie, here's a vote for ya. Well another hot humid one today. Feels like was 96 with a real of 92 again. Started packing by 8 am and was done in about 90 minutes of loading bedding, hay and all the other major stuff. I was dripping wet in sweat! Gave Indy and Paige their show shaves and then did our Showmanship patterns in the indoor with Paige. Only stayed in there about 15 minutes and then back to the barn and 6 fans going! We'll be leaving about 10 am tomorrow, since it's only a 30 minute drive to the Fair Grounds. Hopefully beating out the thunder storms and getting all settled in. Will miss y'all and might list on FB if I have time. Love, Marion and the blondes.

In answer to the question as to what caused the proliferative lesion, not really sure. Not sure why she got pythium and the other horses at the same pasture didn't. They did say that her immune system could have played a part. The birth of her foal could have weakened her immune system and made her more susceptible to diseases. After all of this we did put her on a supplement for her immune system called Tri-Mune.~~~

The grafting process consisted of taking punch grafts from Susie’s left side of her neck underneath her mane. They took a total of 22 punch grafts and implanted them into the wound bed. Her leg was bandaged and they would wait five days before the bandage could be removed. Susie remained at LSU until October 31st. Halloween day she retuned home after a total of 17 days. Now the fun begins! lol (A click on the horseshoe)

Hi Charlie, here's a vote for ya. Well it was a hot humid one today. Heat index was at 95 degrees, straight up temp was 90! So Indy and Paige were both only lunged for 15 minutes, with every fan going in the indoor, plus the big 36 round fan by the one door way. So it wasn't all that bad in there out of the sun and humidity. Then I waited for the sun to move and shade the backside and northeast side and then I weed whacked all that down. Moved the trailer into the driveway closer to the garages and will start to pack it up tomorrow. Remembering to bring a ton of electrolytes for both the horses, dog and myself. Although the dog will be into the trailer almost 24/7 in the A/C! Lucky him! Love Marion and the blondes.

Almost at the end of our HOTM run...yay! Keep the votes coming and thank you.~~~

Susie was going to have to return to LSU to have skin grafts done. The wound would not completely heal without having the grafts done. They needed the wound to start healing first and then after it reached a certain point, they were going to implant the skin grafts into the wound. She returned to LSU on October 15th. However the wound bed was not ready for the grafting, so she stayed there and on October 22nd they preceded with the grafting process. (Voted)

My goodness! Horses are so smart. I've noticed that Sadie sometimes has what looks like dried drops of water on her back. Monday, she filled her mouth with water and tossed it on her back. How cool is it that she knows how to cool herself off? I don't know if this is something horses normally do, or if she was inspired by being hosed down or cooling off in the sprinkler. Just amazing! So thankful for the wonderful things we learn from our four legged loved ones. Love always and a vote.

Hi Charlie, here's a vote for ya. Got a lot of little things done today. Spread out 200 lbs of Mag/Cal in the indoor in the super dry and dusty areas, yes I have those, along with some still wet spots from that storm almost 2 weeks ago now! UGH! Well last night we had that storm, I don't think we've ever had lightning and thunder that lasted so long, it was well over two hours of it. And the rains finally came, heavy for a while too, I was worried about more seeping into the indoor on the low side, but all was well. Rain gauge said one inch. Today was major food shopping day and get all that's needed for our horse show this Thursday when we leave. Horses were out late in the afternoon, as it was very hot and humid earlier, then it seemed to drop in humidity and a nice breeze came in. Tomorrow it's back to riding and start to pack up the trailer. Love, Marion and the blondes.

The next day October 25th, a surgical excision of the lesion was done. Preliminary results were not consistent with pythium. However a culture was taken and sent off for testing. The initial diagnosis was an ulcerative and proliferative lesion on the lateral aspect of left rear pastern. After the surgery was done Susie remained at LSU for 9 days, where she was confined to a stall and her bandages changed every 3 days. She was sent home on October 2nd. We were told to keep her confined to her stall. However we separated the barn to give her two stalls and the middle isle, where we placed a round hay bale for her to eat. We also had to change her bandages every 3 days. This again was just like when she had her head wound. It is very difficult for someone, without any medical background, to apply these bandages. This bandage consisted of six steps (telfa pad, white cling gauze, cotton combine, brown gauze, vetwrap and elasticon). Try putting this on all while the horse is moving. lol Just lucky there were two of us working together. Susie seemed to be enjoying, once again being treated like a queen. Here's a vote.

I'm on late tonight, still on vacation so my schedule is all off. lol~~~~~

O.K. here comes Susie’s drama. It is October 24, 2012, only two months after Lollipop’s death. We bring Susie back to LSU. This time she has a lesion on her left rear pastern. We noticed it a couple of days before and decided this time we would go straight to LSU. We thought for sure that it was the pythium again, it looked just like the lesion on her head. We didn’t even bother to call a vet, we loaded her up and headed to LSU. We knew she would be in great hands. Left a vote.

Hi Charlie, here's a vote for ya. Well, thank goodness I woke up a new woman! Got a lot done to make up for the lost day yesterday. Rode Miss Paige and she was really awesome today. Then they got turned out and I mowed the lawn and did a few other outside things. Knowing that this storm we are now getting was movin' on in! It's been thunder and lightning for over 45 minutes now, no rains yet! But I saw pictures on FB of the damage it did to Norther PA! Hope it's worn down a little by the time we get the full effect of it. So if you don't hear from me and are reading this on someone else's page, it's cause it's really close now and I shut the computer down. Love, Marion and the blondes.

HI Charlie, here's a vote for ya. So on Friday, I got Indy lunged and Paige ridden. Did a couple of other things. Got them turned out to pasture and took a nap! I knew the wedding at 6:30 pm would be a long night! But I held off on feeding till 5:30 and put me leaving about 6:10 pm. Missed the vows thing, glad for that. Cocktail hour with all the many tables of picken's was under way. I had my first in 25 years drink of a Toasted Almond. Took me two hours to finish it! LOL! Glad I filled up on the goodies at all the hot food stations. Cause for the main meal it was a choice of Filet Mengion, Salmon, or Chicken stuff with spinach and red peppers, since I don't do meat or fish, went with the chicken! Wish I could have had the kids meal of chicken fingers. Ate two bites and called it quits, horrible! The night dragged on, very slow in doing every thing! Cake cutting was at 10:30 pm, but with an open serving stations of all kinds of Italian deserts. Good thing, made up for missing my meal! LOL! Hardly anyone danced, DJ wasn't playing good tunes at all. Just wasn't a lively wedding party for sure! Felt so sorry for Eileen, the brides mother, she got stuck holding their kid all night long, and she too has bad back problems. Not right! Called it quits by 11 pm and had the 45 minute drive one. Checked the horses, let the dog out and thought I could pass out. Nope. Spent this morning making up for lost sleep. Nothing got done today. What a waste of a day! Horses did get out all afternoon to graze however. I'm not a night time person! No more weddings for me, I'm out of town! LOL! Love, Marion and the blondes.

On late today had a spa day and lunch with my Mom and sisters. Very relaxing day. ~~~

On August 23rd Lollipop was euthanized, at the age of 24. This was a horrible day. I remember it well. Lollipop was my husband’s favorite horse. She was the best horse he’d ever had or would ever have. He loved her so much and still speaks of her fondly. He had called the vet and told him that he needed to have Lolli put down. They set up a time when he could come out. I went to work that morning, but told my supervisor that I would need to leave for a while that afternoon. Knowing the circumstances she of course said no problem. My husband called me when the vet was on his way. I got to the pasture and the rest of the horses were in their stalls. We led Lolli out to the pasture near where she would be buried. My husband said his goodbyes to his sweet mare and he left to go continue digging the hole. I held Lolli out in the pasture waiting for the vet to arrive. I spoke to her and comforted her all the while. I wanted to let her know that her baby Ace would be fine, that Susie would love and care for him. I told her that she would be going to a much better place, where she could run and play, and would no longer be in pain. Soon the vet arrived and with two quick injections, Lolli was gone and the tears came. My husband could not watch this happen but when it was over, he came and picked her up with the tractor and carried her to the hole he had dug. She is buried on our pasture where we can visit with her everyday. The herd of course mourned her for the next several days. They seemed lost without her, she was the Alpha mare. However Gypsy soon took over the herd and things got back to somewhat normal.

That was the third reason we decided to keep Ace. He was a part of Lollipop and we could keep her with us through him. RIP Lollipop.~~~~ Here's your vote.

Hi Charlie, here's a vote for ya. Well got a lot done today again. Indy got the day off, just turn out time. Paige got lunged and a ride. Did good. Then it was mow time, got the last two pastures done today. Tomorrow is going to be hectic! Want to ride again and have to weed whack, then get them out for a little while. Remember that baby shower last summer I didn't want to go to, then the bridle shower last month that I still didn't want to go to! Well tomorrow is the wedding! And yes, I still don't want to go! It's a 6:30 pm wedding. And of course my heard is used to eating dinner at 7 pm. So I'm going to pray that they'll be okay feeding about 5 pm (think I'll cut the grain in half) and shower and leave by 6 pm hopefully. I won't get there to till close to 7 pm, but that's when the cocktail hour starts, who cares about the wedding ceremony, this way I won't open my mouth! LOL! Love, Marion and the blondes.

It’s August 2012 now. Lollipop seemed to be having more and more trouble with her feet. We had been watching her pretty closely the past few months. She was laying down more in the pasture and for longer periods of time. We of course talked to the farrier about her, but he said since the coffin bone had already rotated, nothing could be done to stop it. There of course were options like certain type of horseshoes that would help with the pain. Early on we did buy her some boots to wear whenever we rode. We also had her on a herbal supplement , called herbal bute. This stuff really helped her. But we knew it was only a matter of time. She started having trouble coming into the barn to eat. We would have to go out to her in the pasture and feed her. This was hard to watch. My husband made the decision that something had to be done. (Left a vote)

Hi Charlie, here's a vote for ya. Well the temps broke and it was just beautiful out there today. High was only 78 and a very nice cool breeze! Got a lot done. Worked Indy and the lunged and rode Paige in the indoor. All doors wide open and the breeze just blowing through, made for a really nice work session. Everyone got out for a while for grass too, they loved that! I then mowed another pasture. And speaking of mowing, new neighbor out there mowing his rocks on this side of his house. I wonder if he realizes that his blades are now shot and he's making rock pieces fly over here! Better not ding my L/Q trailer! Love, Marion and the blondes.

Now let’s see…oh yes it is the year 2012. June 1st and Lollipop’s colt, Ace, is now one year old. He is a handsome little fellow and so good to. We never even had to wean this one. We tried once separating him by putting him in a little pen, but he jumped the fence to be with his mom. Lollipop pretty much weaned him herself. We just left them together in the pasture with the other horses. Ace was eating feed early on. Lollipop was pretty old at this point and she was slowing down. She was having trouble with her feet, she had foundered several years earlier and the coffin bone in her hoof had rotated. We still rode her on occasion but not often and not for long periods. We would soak her feet in buckets of water with apple cider vinegar and rub her legs with absorbine. She loved the pampering.

Hi Charlie, here's a vote for ya. Well today was one of those goof off days! I knew it was going to be, had a luncheon date for my birthday with some very dear friends. An hours drive to meet them and the same for the ride home. Over three hours in the Bistro Restaurant gabbing. We only get together about once a year and there's a lot to catch up on all around! LOL! And besides, it was another really hot humid day! So horses had a late lunch themselves and then the storm rolled in. We got very lucky, only lightning, thunder and high winds, which cooled it down by 15 degrees. Nice out now. But Southeast of us got the heavy duty rains! They can have it. Tomorrow I'll drag the indoor, mostly dry now and then work Indy and ride Paige. Love, Marion and the blondes.

I’m sure you all know Ace…he has his own profile page!
Ace was really special to us for several reasons. First, because he was Lollipops foal, which was a miracle in itself. Second, because he was born on my husband’s birthday, June 1st. And there is a third reason…we will get to that one later. Ace was born at our new pasture in Charenton. We moved the herd to this pasture in the beginning of 2011. He was really smart and had a good disposition. Everyone said that he was a “keeper”. I said we definitely had to keep him because he was a birthday present to my husband from his special horse Lollipop.

So I guess by now you can see why we never made good on our deal , for that second breeding with Susie. We were having foals left and right. All my husband wanted was a little filly…but no such luck. We still talk about it every now and again, breeding Susie. I am not sure I want to put her through that again. We will see how things go. I’m also not sure that we want to raise another foal. We are getting to old to handle those young ones. Who knows it may happen… one day! (A click on the horseshoe)

HI Charlie, here's a vote for ya. Well it was a busy day today. And another really got one, 91 with index of 94, but we did have a tiny breeze! Got Indy lunged, then Lunged Paige and was all set to ride and my hay man called. I'm on my way over with a wagon of hay, meet me at the hay barn. So much for riding. But Paige was looking really good! Got 120 bales of nice second cut grass, he got it up last week before all the storms set in. It was in his drive in hay barn on the wagon, so it was curing nicely. Okay load me up! Don't mind paying extra to have them stack it! Then when they left, I had to run to town and drop off some show cloths to the dry cleaners. Got home and just hayed the horses, was way to hot and miserable out for them. But I decided to mow a pasture. By then I had it and needed a shower and a rest. Love, Marion and the blondes.

Now it is the following year 2011. Lollipop gives birth to her foal on June 1, 2011. This means that we have had four foals, one each year for the last four years! All of them colts! Lucky, Dusty, Kicka and now Ace. We were not sure how Lollipop would make out with having a baby. She was so old and we weren’t sure if she had ever had any babies before. However she did great. She had her colt during the night or early morning on June 1st. The colt was standing by her in the pasture when we got there. Although Lolli was not a very good mother. She did not want to let her foal drink milk. At times we would have to hold or tie her so the foal could drink. She wasn’t very protective of it either. We thought maybe it was because she was so old and possibly because she had never had any other foals. Here's your vote.

Hi Charlie, here's a vote for ya. Well with it as hot as is was by 10 am, nothing got done as far as working horses out! By 1 pm it had a heat index of 99! So everyone up to the wash station for a cold hosing and washing of manes and tails. Then back to the barn in front of fans! Bullseye loved his hose treatment too. Even the big tractor got a hosing off! LOL! It is drying out the indoor however! More like melting it! LOL! Hoping to maybe ride tomorrow and see how it goes! It's supposed to break by Tuesday and be in the low 80's with a lot less humidity! Love, Marion and the blondes.

Yes we are sharing each others love of horses, but remember he had a love of horses before me! I am new to this horsey stuff. lol ~~~~~~~

So what could possibly happen next, you ask? Well let’s recap for a moment. Our new mare we bought, Gypsy, that was pregnant, had her colt in 2008. Susie was bred in 2008 and had her colt in 2009. Gypsy was “accidentally” bred in 2009 and had her colt in 2010. So now what happens, our dear sweet Lollipop gets bred, by that same stud that broke through our pasture fence and knocked up Gypsy! Yes Lollipop was bred on June 20, 2010. The stud still in the pasture, ran out through the same opening he got in through, when he saw my husband coming. lol

So we had a new little colt that we had to deal with. Lucky was just two years old and we were just getting him gelded and sent off to the trainer to be broke. We didn’t feel like we wanted to go through this same thing again so soon. One young one was enough to handle. And now with Lollipop expecting, we decided to sell Kicka to the guy we were leasing our pasture with at the time. So we sold him in October 2010, but still got to see and play with him daily. This way it was easy to wean him from Gypsy too. We were able to separate them in the different pastures we had there. So this was a win, win for all involved. (Left a vote)

I've spent a day and a half fixing a broken pipe at the barn. It shouldn't have taken that long except that I don't know how to fix broken pipes. It's tight and not leaking anymore, so that's good. Now to fill up the hole and get on with the rest of my chores. Hope you're having a good weekend

Come visit me, Allie & BJ and his mom,Gracie.

Hi Charlie, here's a vote for ya. Well, it was drizzle, sun, overcast, drizzle and then hot and humid with sun! 91 for a high today with heavy duty humidity. This heat for the next few days will really dry up the indoor, along with the big fans running. Lunged Indy and then lunged and rode Paige. She's good so far. Don't think I'm going to pack the hoof tonight. See what I have tomorrow. Ran into town and wound up spending an hour talking with a former co-worker. Had a nice chat. Of course by the time I got home, it was so hot, I opted out of mowing the pasture. Love, Marion and the blondes.

Well while I was so involved with talking about Susie’s new foal and then with her surgery and all…I forgot to mention that our mare Gypsy managed to get herself bred. Yep Susie had Dusty in April 2009 and in May 2009, Gypsy was bred by a stud that broke through our pasture fence. We know this because the stud was still in our pasture when my husband got there. So here we go again. Gypsy had her foal on May 6, 2010. This was Gypsy’s second foal ( she is the one that had Lucky, who at the time was now 2 yrs. old). She had another colt and we named him Kicka. Kicka was a playful little thing. He loved to run around and kick all the time. That is how he got his name. (Here's your vote.)

Hi Charlie, here's a vote for ya. Well the indoor swimming pool is drying out slowly. Had more usable ground this afternoon. So Indy and Paige just got a lungeing. I did have to close all the doors tonight, as we are expecting rain over night. But not the horrible heavy stuff, just showers. Should be okay, I hope cause I didn't really fill in the wash out areas yet along the foundation! Bad me! Did get them out for a while and got the lawn mowed all around the house. So kinda productive day after all. Love, Marion and the blondes.

Yes I am thrilled this chapter ended so well! We are a couple days past the half way mark in this HOTM run. But don't worry with a horse like Susie...there is still more drama to come. lol ~~~~

After Susie returned home and things settled down, we went to visit Dusty. He was 5 months old now. He had adjusted well at the breeders. The first time he saw me again, I felt like he remembered me. We visited him on several occasions. He grew up to be a handsome stallion. He looked a lot like Susie, only more like a Palomino. The breeder ended up selling him to another guy we knew. He took Dusty to Mexico to live. They changed his name to Tesoro. He is still a stud used for breeding. We kept in touch with the new owner for a while. Tesoro had one foal that we know about, we received some pictures. Our little Dusty would be six years old now. I posted some of the last pics we received. (Another click on the horseshoe)
