My Horse Profile

Thoroughbred from Lakeside, ON

Royal Mes

About Me

Active within 1 Day

I am from Lakeside, ON and I've been a Club Horse member for 3 years, 1 month and 23 days

Nicknames: His registered name is ROYAL MES we call him Charlie Bubbles, he blows bubbles in his water pail....

Age: 12 years old

Gender: Gelding

Breed: Thoroughbred

Height: 16.3 hands

Color: dark bay

Type of Riding: english riding, some jumping and just pleasure hack. We started dressage spring 2012, it seems to be more our "thing", Charlie can be a bit lazy and although I wanted to jump, he isn't really into it.

My Horse's Achievements: I am proud of Charlie everyday, but what I love about him most is that he has no idea he is TB....He has a very kind heart and would never think of doing anything goofy when you are on his back, his manners are impeccable. He is the reason that Sterl May is still going strong, he keeps her moving when they are outside and when they are in, he is company for her across the stall door. I don't ride in the winter and when I tack him up in the spring he literally acts like I rode him yesterday, such an easy horse. Love him so much, lucky day for me when I found him. He was HOTD October 24, 2011. He was proud to be HOTM April 2012. He got HOTD for a second time October 25, 2012
Charlie was HOTD for 3rd time October 25, 2013
Charlie was HOTD for 4th time October 25, 2014

My Horse's Favorite Treat: carrots, apples, actually anything to eat, his appetite is great, recently found out they both LOVE pears.

My Horse's Favorite Things To Do: he loves to have his neck and belly scratched, he would stand there as long as you could do it.

Pet Peeves: He hates to get wet, eg. the rain, snow, he will tolerate a bath, but it is not fun!!

My Horse's motto: it's all about me, everybody loves Charlie.

How We Met

About 1 1/2 years after the heartbreak of losing my horse, Sassy Mac (Mackie) due to heart failure, he has a profile page Angel Sassy Mac. I started to look for a new horse with the help of my coach. I looked at probably 25 horses, everything I tried was nice, but nothing really got me excited. Finally my coach told me the problem was I was trying to replace Mackie, and that was never going to happen. She said I had to just pick a horse and fall in love with it after I got it home. I took offence to that remark, I have always believed that when the connection is there, you will know. I was not prepared to "just pick one" so I decided to stop looking for awhile. Two days later my coach called and told me about a horse she wanted me to see. I said NO, she proceded to tell me about him anyway, first, he was only 6, too young, he was a Thoroughbred, I didn't want a Thoroughbred and he was 16.2, he was a bit bigger than I wanted. But she insisted, the horse was fairly close to home, so I agreed to just go and look. I know some of you will understand this, when I walked into his stall and our eyes met. The connection was instant. It was the feeling I had been waiting for. I could not believe it, I forgot that he was big, and a Thoroughbred, I rode him that morning and fell in love. I called our Vet the minute I got home and asked for the pre purchase exam, Charlie was delivered the next week. He is just a very amazing horse. Love at first sight, it does happen!!

My Ginger had chronic dehydration in the summer so getting her to drink enough water was tough. I put apple juice in her water bucket and wetted down her feed to sneak extra water in. Hope you get it figured out!!

HI Charlie, here's a vote for ya buddy. Personally, I would go with looking into the Neigh Lox and putting him on it and seeing how it goes. Yes a scoping is the true method of checking, but like you said, Dr. C is good and you really know Charlie. I would just make sure that he gets as much fiber as possible. Both high fiber grain, and lot's of hay, and yes, alfalfa hay at least on flake a day. You can do this, you know him the best. AS for the water, yes the heated buckets are great. I also have a long tube like heater that I make an extra 5 gallon bucket and pour that in their regular water bucket with the hose water. Each horse has two water buckets, except Bullseye, he only needs one and he even gets the hot water mixed in his. You can do this! Love, Marion and the blondes.

Sorry the nutritionist wasn't much help. Sounds like you're doing everything right. I think the oil is a good idea, can't hurt and may help things move along. Molasses in the water is another good idea, I think I remember you saying you keep their water warm? Only thing else I can think of is, don't know how often you feed, but maybe more frequent feeding would help? Just a thought, and I don't know if in your situation it's doable.

a woman near us who raises TWHs, many of whom are black and get dehydrated easily, adds loose salt with no iodine to her horses' feed during season changes and when it is very hot. ive done that too after having a few colic episodes related to seasons, and have had good luck with it. in your case, i would definately check with dr C about the safety of that and how much.

I'M FRUSTRATED, GRRR
I should have the blood work back today, as far as the nutritionist. She is reluctant to make a change in feed for and ulcer he "may" or "may not" have. She can't get her head around an impaction colic, to her that means lack of moisture, so #1 should be let's get him drinking more water...Charlie is a good drinker. She says the only way to know for sure if he has an ulcer is to scope, I said Dr. C is treating on clinical signs, he knows this horse. She said he has adequate fat and fibre with his present ration, keep up with the alfalfa hay and add corn or vegetable oil to his feed. Not much help there....we lft a vote, Love Donna Lee

been busy this past week. spreading the winter rye grass seed. didn't have any real help so had to do it myself. also rain and rain then more rain! have had to bring them into the stalls out of the wet cold. that makes more work in mucking and stall care. :/
hope you got them out today and Charlie's bloodwork is normal.

Hi Charlie, here's a vote for ya buddy. Another cold and very windy one. Today was take the new truck on an adventure to Home Depot. First time it got to be a work truck! Carried it's first load of materiel in the bed. I picked up 3 insulation panels for the three dutch doors on the front of the horse barn. One sheet of plywood to go over the top of Indy's door, don't want him eating the insulated board. And several bags of ice melt in prep for the winter. Steve across the street helped me get the big stuff to the barn and hopefully tomorrow he'll help me cut everything to size and place in the door frames. Kids got hay for lunch and fresh water, they were happy. Tomorrow it could go above 35 degrees in the afternoon, so I'll ride them then if we are done with the project, otherwise at least lunge them again. Love, Marion and the blondes.

Someday I will move to a warmer area, maybe back to the Low-country of South Carolina where I lived for 3 years; loved it there. We will warm up some this w-end but rain the whole time. I planned on getting the rest of my winter hay from my hay guy, but he said he'll hold it as long as I need him to. We're really moving through the hay already. CAN'T BELIEVE THIS WEATHER...
I'm off work today, our plant is having some major maintenance done, this works out for me except for the lack of $$$. Dr. Cook is coming to pull a blood on Charlie, hope it shows the inflammation is gone...the nutritionist is coming over after lunch to discuss his feed program. He has been on the maintenance dose of his ulcer meds since Monday and so far so good. Yesterday was so miserable they had to stay in again, I think they can get out for a bit today. Just because I don't talk about her, Sterly is doing great...She loves winter. We left a long weekend vote, Love Donna Lee

HI Charlie, here's a vote for ya. Let me first clarify, I'm not moving or going anywhere. Yes, I have owned my own farm and built it from dirt up, over 36 years now. Love this place. It's my Trainer Marissa that'll be moving in the early spring. She rents where she's at, it's nice by they haven't made any of the improvements that needed to be done by winter, and winter is fast approaching and things are going to be ugly over there again. So she's looking into a couple of other farms to rent. Okay, this just wasn't a good day. I had a noontime appointment to take my 1991 Trail-Et goose neck trailer too to have the frame looked at. I have some really bad rust spots that started getting really ugly this summer. This first shop told me to scrap it, not worth fixing the frame and not safe to haul in! Really upset me, as this trailer is lighter and smaller than my L/Q trailer by far. So I called the place I brought my Featherlite L/Q from and they told me to call back Monday for appointment to take a look at it. Bill thinks he might be able to salvage it. Interior for horses is excellent, so is the tack room and small dressing room. Anyhow, got home and was so bummed I didn't even work the horses. Went to Kevin's and crying on his shoulder. We'll see what happens next week! Love, Marion and the blondes.

Hi Charlie, here's a vote for ya. Nasty cold, cold day. Didn't get above 28 degrees again. Did get everyone lunged and cleaned up today. Then went on a road trip with my trainer to look at a new barn and indoor with another barn with a hay loft and bedding storage area above it. Same distance from my house, so I don't care were we go. It's got pro's and it's got con's, but with some TLC is can be doable. So time will tell. Hopefully tomorrow it'll warm up enough so I can get a ride in. Love, Marion and the blondes.

Hi Charlie, here's a vote for ya. Burr baby Burr! 23 this morning with a wind chill of 14, and the high was only about 27 with windchill of 16! So it was not nice out there. I have to find my knee warmers, I didn't put them on and working out two horses in the indoor and then being outside getting wood, my poor ole'arthritic knees were screaming when I came in the house. Only lunged today, hopefully tomorrow ride Paige. She was bucking up a storm lungeing, it was about 36 inside the indoor and she felt good, kinda glad I didn't saddle up! LOL! Heats on in the barn, it's about 50 right now in there when I feed a little while ago, kids are nice and toasty in their blankets. Love, Marion and the blondes.

Hi Charlie, here's a vote for ya. Well we got lucky last night, no ice and no snow, just rain and rain all day today. But going down to 23 tonight and a high tomorrow of only 28 then 12 over night tomorrow, winter is moving in on us. Got the L/Q trailer all winterized today, Anthony and I got it done, so I don't have to worry about the pipes freezing and busting lose! Lunged Paige and did some showmanship, then it was time to go for my Chiropractic adjust and to Wally world to get some things and groceries. Guess I'll make sure the heat goes on tonight in the barn for them. Spoiled kids, well me, cause it's more comfortable for me working in there and breathing in there. Love, Marion and the blondes.
