Deacon would love your support for HOTM!
♡ When I got Deacon he had previously pastured on Bill’s brothers property with 3 other horses. All 3 others horses were taken in to have sarcoid tumors removed. Deacon had a small knot on his left flank that I had Doc Edward’s check out. He said to leave it alone until it started to change or he could remove for cosmetic reasons if I wanted. I choose to wait. I don’t show my horses and I wasn’t interested giving Deacon Surgery after just newly purchasing him. It didn’t bother him either. Several years ago I did have it removed. It started to change. Doc had learned how to also prevent future ones as well. This method is to take a small piece of the tumor and put it in the neck area. You can’t even tell where the cut on his flank was now. In his knot he actually had 2 small tumors in it.
Equine Sarcoid:

Sarcoid tumors are the most common skin tumor in horses. These tumors are unique in that they are the product of infection with Bovine Papilloma Virus (BPV), which is probably transmitted by flies. Many horses can be infected with this virus, but no two horses will express it in the same way. Tumor appearance and size can vary greatly between horses, and even on the same horse; similarly, response to different treatments can be highly variable. Tumors can originate at the site of a wound or tack rub, and originally present as a wound that isn't healing; on the lower limbs, they also are often mistaken for proud flesh. Though sarcoids are the most common skin tumor of horses, they are also one of the most misunderstood maladies of horses.
Here is a hug & a Wednesday vote :)

Wow! Everyone got HOTD all at once! Thanks!
Had a great time yesterday do some more in-hand jumping with Tarnation. Today I worked some more with bathing Rocky, because he pretty dirty. Then I went to let him graze and he bucked as we were walking just out of pure energy. So I put him in the round pen and he ran and ran. I couldn't get him to slow down. After awhile I caught him and rode him a bit. Then were roping cows in the biggest arena and he was very interested so we went over and checked it out. Then turned him and Tarnation out. So it was a really good day.

Congratulation’s Queen Paige “Nuttin But Good” our April HOTM! Here we go with our campaign with Whiskey 237221 to be May 2014 HOTM! I need everyone’s support so vote on his page daily please!!! Every other weekend I am not around a computer so I will phone vote as many as possible, also 1 x a week that I will phone vote :) I will start my story with why I have and will ONLY have such well trained and gentle geldings, then I will start how Whiskey & I became each other’s very best friends along with some Rocky Mountain facts about the breed ♡ * Rocky Mountain Horses are slow to mature and do not reach their full size and weight until about five to six years of age. Generally healthy horses, they often live long lives but do have a tendency to be extremely "easy keepers". Care must be taken to keep your Rockies from becoming too overweight, particularly in their later years.* Thank you for your support we appreciate it!

We left an early morning vote for you. 6 for 6, Woo Hoo, my arm was quite sore all day yesterday, but the forecast is for T-storms today, soooo, I very carefully tacked up and we had a nice ride, there was a wonderful breeze after dinner ao the flies were not too bad. I can now get Charlie to stand next to the mounting block for dismount, that way I'm not straining my arm, he is such a smart boy, talk soon, Love Donna Lee

Well Sterly has has all 3 doses of the bute, however, we may re do this exercise if she does not show improvement in a couple of days. My bute is past expiration date, it was fine when Charlie neede it in January, but Dr. Cook says it is likely ready to be chucked. It will be less effective. She is showing minimal improvement, I would like to see better...had another lovely W, T ride on Charlie last night, just need a bit of help tightening the girth and dismount, I try to step off on the block, I can't use my right arm to slide off. Doesn't look very pretty, ho well, Love Donna Lee

We left a vote today, yesterday morning Dr. Cook came by to power float Sterly's teeth. It was quite a procedure, and he did what he could for her. She has a couple of issues with her bite, and he chose to not be overly aggressive, he said he did not want to cause a problem by trying to fix a problem. After her sedation wore off I put her back outside, she went straight to her hay and started eating, I was so relieved, however overnight she only tried a bit,it was a bit more than she has been eating, so it is a step in the right direction, fingers crossed for her please...after we had everything step up for her teeth, Dr. Cook went to the truck to get her sedation, and yelled at me, "come here and get your cat out of the truck" I ran over, but when I looked in I said, "OK, but that is not our cat" she had climbed in from the last clients place, we caught her and put her in our carrier until they were ready to go, back track to drop off the cat. Have a great day, Love Donna Lee

Looks like an all day light rain, too bad it is so hot and humid, the horsed can't decide whether they want in or out. I'm keeping a close eye on Sterl's breathing when it is this hot, she is better off inside, but I also need her to eat, and seems to like the grass. She went out at 5 this morning just incase she has to go in at noon. As I have said before, too many coyotes in our area to leave them out all night, plus I think Charlie is afraid of the dark, soon. GOOD MORNING ALL, LEFT A VOTE TODAY. It has only been 2 days with the increased meds, and she seems to be making some small improvement. Her attitude is good, she is peeing better, she has been eating her bucket up, so I let her have as much as she wants. We use a Senior pettet plus a vitamin mineral supplement plus an extra supplement for her hind gut, I soak the whole thing and add loose salt. I tried her again on the hay cubes but she doesn't seem interested in them, and I am soaking them too. She is fine on pasture, and she wants to eat her hay, but she just can't chew it up. Meds first, then teeth. Talk soon, Love Donna Lee & Sterly Girly

Sterly isn't feeling tip top. She seems to be having teeth issues. She gets a regular float in spring with her vacs, and because she is 30 she gets one in the late fall, so every 6 months for her. Dr. Cook said that she will need the power equipment next time. But she has been having trouble chewing her hay, she seems fine on pasture, but when she comes in for the night, she won't touch her bucket and she just picks at her hay. All her vitals look good, but we drew blood yesterday anyway, we did another float adjustment, we couldn't find a beam to support the tie down for the speculum when he uses the power equipment. We hoped she would be doing better in a couple of days, I turned her out at 5AM, she barely touched her hay, so, I guess we will need to find a way to get at her with the power tools, have a great day, talk soon, Love Donna Lee

GOOD MORNING, I need a giant kick in the behind, yesterday the humidity was terrible, but there was a lovely breeze, so, I thought it wasn't too bad. Usually when it is hot I keep a very close eye on Sterl May's breathing. I didn't check her until almost noon and she was really struggling. We brought them into the cool barn, put her fan on, I gave her a bit of "ventipulmin" she settled soon after. I put then out at 4 AM, the air quality is so bad, they won't be out long, talk soon, love Donna Lee

With Jackie and Sterl settled in their new home and David and I in our new house, things were great, except Jackie's health was failing and his quality of life was sometimes quite poor. I convinced myself that I should really look for another horse because if something was to happen to Jackie, Sterl May would be alone. Plus I would like to ride again. After an EXTENSIVE search(please read ROYAL MES "HOW WE MET") I found Charlie. What can I say about Charlie, he is simply the best. Charlie arrived Oct.8,2008, Thanksgiving Sunday. Jackie passed quietly with David, Sterly and me by his side on June 9, 2010. She loved her little buddy, she watched and called for him for several days. Dr. Cook told me to let her be, they mourn the same as we do. We had him cremated and he is buried in the pasture where Sterl can be close everyday. This is her last move, it is my last move until they cart me of to the "old folks home" Everyday is an adventure, what I have tried to say this last month, is that thru all of it, STERLY GIRLY has always been there. THE END, LOVE TO ALL DONNA LEE & STERLY GIRLY.

Just when I was sure things could not get any worse, guess again. Not only was I looking for a new place for Sterl & Jackie to live, understand that boarding 2 horses that are not ride-able was out of the question. Jackie was also having some health issues, he had COPD and Cushing's disease, plus due to an old case of laminitis he wore special shoes, all of this cost $$$. You know that expression, "BEING AT THE RIGHT PLACE AT THE RIGHT TIME" Well, I could almost not believe my luck, I heard from a neighbor that a place just down the road was going to be available, to make a long story short, when I looked at it, it was perfect, it needed fencing and the barn needed some reno, but nothing like what I had been thru, the only catch was if we rented the barn and pasture, they really wanted us to take the house as well. I would actually be where my horses were, I could see them all day, it would be amazing. I believe in life it isn't where you go, it's how you get there....we were home. LAST STORY TOMORROW, THANKS TO EVERYONE, IT HAS BEEN GREAT FUN SHARING STERL'S JOURNEY, LEFT A VOTE, LOVE DONNA LEE & STERLY GIRLY

Here comes another rainy day vote, THANKS SO MUCH FOR THE SUPPORT, WE LOVE IT.
I just bet you are all thinking that finally everything is going my way and we all live happily every after.....not so fast. Mackie was without a doubt, a truly wonderful horse(please take a moment and read his"how we met"on his profile. He is ANGEL SASSY MAC. I think it best describes him to say that he was like a sick child, he was constantly struggling with something and of course, we worked thru it all. When we had been in the barn almost 9 years and Mackie was 11, EVERYTHING started to go downhill fast. The barn owners had a change of heart about retirement and decided to sell the property. There I was with 3 horses and looking for a new home again. I thought of tons of possibilities, some you don't want to hear. The farm sold in 3 days, however, the new owner gave me until spring to move, that gave us almost 10 months to find a new home. In the meantime, MACKIE'S health deteriorated and on AUG 8/2007 at the University of Guelph EQUINE HOSPITAL, with me by his side until the end, he was euthanized due to heart failure. He was only 12. I can tell you, I miss him every day. So, it was just me Jackie and Sterl May again. TO BE CONTINUED. LOVE DONNA LEE & STERLY GIRLY

RAINY DAY VOTES FOR ALL, My search began again, Sonya and I had 3 horses lined up to look at, none were close to home so we made a day of it. The first 2 were not even possibilities, I was tired, it was getting on in the day and I wanted to just go home, Sonya convinced me we had come this far, let's just go look. The directions were bad, we got lost, when we finally got there I was in a bit of a cranky mood. Everything changed when we were introduced to Sassy Mac. He was so handsome (but I had learned that is no reason to pick a horse)His manners were excellent, I actually wondered for a minute if he was drugged, he wasn't, we spent several hours with him, hearing his history, his training, the personal medical reason the owner had to let him go. He was 8, 16hh and oh so sweet. I rode him, we video taped him, we came home to think it over. Mackie arrived the next week, Jackie and Sterly had a new friend and I had a horse to ride. Life was good again. One thing I have learned over the years, with horses, THERE IS ALWAYS SOMETHING, talk tomorrow, thanks for helping Sterly, love to all, DONNA LEE & STERLY GIRLY

GOOD MORNING, LEFT VOTES FOR ALL, TO THANK YOU FOR YOURS. This is where Sterly's story takes a bit of a twist. FF almost 4 years, we are still at the boarding barn, Sonya is now in University, I still ride 4x a week. I started to notice a slight hesitation from Sterl that was new, she did not want to go forward, at first it was mild, and I could push her thru it, but it got worse. She would actually do a small buck and a very tiny rear when I asked for forward. This was so out of character for her, but ever her resistance was polite, like she was trying to get my attention, she did. Believe me when I say there were lots of suggestion from folks that observed us, most thought that it was behavior and that I was not strong enough and I was letting her get away with it, one woman told me I had to beat her hard enough to make a welt on her skin, that would smarten her up!!!. I chose to call Dr. Cook, I explained the situation and we made arrangements for him to come and see her, I asked if it could be "just" behavior, he said "whenever a horse that was happy with its work begins to resist, they are trying to tell you something is wrong", in the meantime carry on as normal, act like everything is fine TO BE CONTINUED, Talk soon, love Donna Lee & STERLY GIRLY

GOOD MORNING MY FRIENDS,I would like to continue with Sterl May's story, thanks for reading them and commenting on them, because she is 30 and retired, it is also fun for me to remember the early years. THANKS FOR THE VOTES AND SUPPORT. All was well at the barn, Sterly's retraining was in full swing, I still leased Fool Kat, so I was a pretty busy girl, 2 horses to ride 4x a week and the barn was 40 minutes from home, a full time job, a house and husband to take care of plus 4 cats and a dog(Nicky) that I did agility with. The young couple that owned Fool Kat were pregnant and building a new house, they had no time for her but, did not want to let her go. So I was a perfect solution for them. Unfortunately, the baby arrived and the house was ready and they were ready to take her home. I had leased her for almost 2 years, I had Sterly but still it was a sad good by. Fool Kat was 23 when I started her lease, I kept in touch after they moved her home, she was basically a pet, she died quietly at 32. TALK SOON, LOVE DONNA LEE AND STERLY GIRLY

GOOD MORNING, here it is day 16 already. WE LEFT A VOTE FOR YOU, and a big thanks for the wonderful support. Being a pretty new horse owner, I had sort of thought once I get the first year under my belt, I'd be good to go....Silly me, aren't we ALWAYS learning from them. One thing is for sure, if all horses were like STERL MAY, everyone would have a horse. By now she is pretty much the "sweetheart" of the barn. The owners loved her 'cause she was easy to handle, never caused a fuss and I was there regularly(every chance I had). One morning, Sterl was in the aisle cross ties, I was grooming her and Margaret was touring a new prospective boarder, they got to us and Margaret says "this is Sterl May, she is Standardbred, this horse jumps" as they walked past, I heard the guy say "nice butt!!!" HEY,he was talking about the horse. LOVE DONNA LEE & STERLY GIRLY

Thanks for listening to my stories of Sterl May, I guess by now you can see just how special she is to us. The trail ride was bad, but there were tons of great stuff that happened at "the barn" One morning I had just finished my ride and we jumped a few little jumps. I had turned Sterl loose in the arena to roll. As I waited for her, one of the other boarders came in with a friend. She introduced me and said her friend just came for the visit to watch her ride. I told them I was almost done, I'd be out of the way in a few minutes. I couldn't help notice that the friend was REALLY looking at Sterly, of course I thought because she is sooooo beautiful. As I got ready to leave the arena, I called "come on Sterl May, let's go" the friend says, "what did you call her? Is she a Standardbred?" "she said, I'm K. V. this horse was born on my Dad's farm, OMG, wait till I tell Dad that I saw her, she looks great, do you jump her? he will be so happy to hear that she is alive and well", we both cried a few happy tears, what a small world, what a great horse. After that day, I made sure that I let Mr. V know every year or so that Sterly was indeed alive and well. WE LEFT YOU A VOTE TODAY, THANKS FOR YOURS, talk soon, Love Donna Lee & Sterly Girly

Thanking you all with a vote today. We were really enjoying life together at the barn. I love having the guys home but I have always missed the camaraderie of other riders support. Sterly was now jumping small courses, mostly xrails but also some verticals. We had advanced to the outdoor ring. One evening, late spring I was at the barn and had just started my warm up when a couple of the other riders came in and said "we are going on a trail ride, want to join us" We had not done that yet, so I thought OK, sounds fun.....WRONG...Sterl May thought there was something spooky behind every tree, bush, rock, everything was a monster. She just could not settle, so I could not settle. The other riders are like, she'll be fine come on. So I hang in, we struggle along, Sterl on high alert, snorting all the way. Just then we see ahead of us in the field a dozen or so cows and everyone is like HEE HAW, LETS GET 'EM. I'm like, NO. STERL JUST FREAKED...they all took off, left us there, me scared to death, Sterl just dancing and prancing. So I did what any chicken would do, I got off and we walked back to the barn. I was just fuming, nice friends, don't ever ask me to go on your stupid trail ride again, everyone had a big laugh on us, it was all soon forgotten, but we never went on another trail ride again. Talk soon, Love Donna Lee & STERLY GIRLY

GOOD MORNING ALL, LEFT YOU A VOTE. Today's story is my personal favorite, here it is. Lessons were going well, we were becoming quite comfortable with one another, she loved her trot poles and her friend Doolie. She was learning to flex and bend but our canter was pretty rough. Sterl would anticipate my asking and she would throw herself into it off her front, not pretty. Our instructor said if we start her on some small jumps it will help her learn to use her hind end. Sterl was already a bit of a "wonder horse" around the barn. Lots of the other riders would chuckle "you can't ride a Standardbred" We practiced our two point, our release on the flat then, when we were ready we planned to jump next lesson. Word spread thru the barn like wildfire "she is going to jump that horse, Standardbred's can't jump" So, here we are next lesson, Val has a couple of TINY xrails set up, Sonya and Doolie were there, I was as nervous as can be. We do our warm up, get sort of relaxed, just then I notice that quite a crowd has gathered at the rail. They are all there to see a Standardbred jump. I trot around the arena, line up, get in two point, get ready for my release,PANIC..I turn my head to the right and CLOSE MY EYES... when I opened them we were on the other side of the jump, STERLY DID IT, Standardbred's can jump. LOVE THAT GIRL, talk tomorrow, thanks for the votes, LOVE DONNA LEE & STERLY GIRLY

GOOD MORNING, we left you a vote, thanks so much for yours. Happy Mothers Day.
Things were settling into a routine, my work schedule allowed me to be at the barn T,F,S,S, because I worked a 12 hour shift on M,T,W. Our lessons were going well, Sterl was an excellent student, she took easily to things like trot poles (Charlie still HATES trot poles) every time I was with her I was so proud, every one thinks their horse is the best looking. Sterly had only been at the barn a couple of weeks, she was turned out in a small paddock along side the road. When I got to the barn that morning, Max told me someone had come by and wondered if that Mare was for sale. We have a large number of AMISH farmers in our area, at first I was taken back. But then I was so proud, because, I realized they thought, "WOW, look at that Mare, she would be a great buggy horse" See, it wasn't just me that thought she was good looking...Talk soon, Love Donna Lee & STERLY GIRLY

So, now Sterl May is safely at the boarding barn, life is good. I HAVE MY OWN HORSE, I had to tell you all about Sonya because I never would have made it thru the training and frustration without her. It did not take long to see that Sterly knew NOTHING about being ridden, she had had someone on her back a handful of times, but trained she wasn't. She had no bend, no flexibility, she had no idea what aids were, her head was straight up and out, when she was confused which was often, she paced. That was her comfort zone. But, none of that mattered to me, she was mine, we would learn together. As lucky as I was to have Sonya, Sterly was lucky to have Doolie(Sonya's horse) his stall was across the aisle from her. And of course, when I rode, especially at first Sonya was always there. Sterly had this huge crush on Doolie and once in the arena, she would follow him anywhere. I kept Fool Kat for those times when nothing went right and I just wanted to ride and noT really work SO HARD at it. We started lessons with Sonya's coach, in the beginning it wasn't pretty, but like I said, we were both learning together. TO BE CONTINUED, Left a vote, thanks for yours, talk soon, Love Donna Lee & STERLY GIRLY

Before I tell you more about STERLY and our adventures, I need to tell you a bit about the young rider that suggested her to me. I met her at the boarding barn which was primarily WESTERN, Sonya was the only English rider there. Sometimes after one of my lessons I would just hang around and watch her ride. I wanted to ride like that, SONYA often came to the barn when no one else was around. So, I started planning my trips when I knew she would be there. I would tack up my leased horse, Fool Kat in my borrowed tack, I didn't have any of my own stuff yet. I would ride up beside her, her horse Doolie was a huge TB, and I'd say "Hi" she would look down at us and say "Hi" I'd say "are we posting on the correct diagonal?" and she would say "NO" and I'd say "can you help me?" she would, and off I'd go, then I'd ride back up to her and say "are we cantering on the correct lead?" and she would say "NO" she would help me get the lead and off we'd go....I believe that we became friends because I drove the poor girl crazy, I think she finally said "I might as well be friends because she apparently isn't going anywhere". I'm telling you this because this amazing friendship that started all those years ago in that little boarding barn continues today. SONYA was only 16 when we met, I have watched that young lady grow up, finish her education, become a fabulous teacher, get married, and she now has 3 beautiful children, her daughter Kaitlyn is just 4 and has started riding lessons. SONYA was and still is there for me every step of the way with STERLY and every horse that came after. TO BE CONTINUED. Left you a vote, thanks for supporting us, I can't tell you how much this means to us. Love Donna Lee & STERLY GIRLY

we would love your support, please
Sterl May was born and raised on a small but successful STANDARDBRED farm not far from my home. Standardbred racing is very big in this part of Ontario. She was quite good at the track, but at 4 years old she got a respiratory virus that ended her racing career. Roxanne, the lady that I eventually bought Sterl's from worked on that farm. Because racing is a business and not a hobby, Sterly had to go. Roxanne remembers the morning she was told to get Sterl May ready for the market truck. Roxanne had known and cared for her for 4 years and could not bear the thought of her going to market, so she bought her on a whim. That night after work she trailered her to a friends house and said "I bought a horse can I keep her here for now" Sterly spent the next 6 years there playing with her two new pasture pals. TO BE CONTINUED, thanks for the votes, we appreciate the support, left you one too, Love Donna Lee & Sterly Girly

HELLO! So my mom, Lena, has decided she want to run for HOTM, but, in order to do that she's going to need at least 600 votes! Now I think she misplaced them somewhere and I don't think we are smart enough to know where she put them. But by pressing a button at the top of my club horse account I'm pretty sure we'll be able to find them! Also if you do we'll return the favor! :)
