Color: Digit went from a black skin and bones baby, to a brown with spots growing boy, and now he is almost completey white with spots... crazy color changes in 9 months!!
Type of Riding: Digit will be going to his very first Gymkhana event on June 1st.... We have worked very hard on barrels and he has become a sexy studmuffin beefed up bad a** and it is time to show him off!!!
My Horse's Achievements: He has learned his cues for walk, trot, and canter
My Horse's Favorite Treat: Anything apple flavored and carrots, beet pulp, grain... pretty much any food
My Horse's Favorite Things To Do: get treats, meet other horses, and sniff every pile of poop he can find! He has to bite everything too.... like a toddler, has to put everything in his mouth

How We Met
DreamCatchers Equine Rescue saved him from sure death. He was emaciated.. small, skin and bones and I worried that he wasn't going to make it when I adopted him, but I loved him and knew he would be beautiful some day. He's been though alot since then.... criptorchid, barbed wire gashed, hoof trouble.... but he is tough and comes through it all stong. I am shocked at how his hair pattern has (and keeps) changing..

ANOTHER LOVELY DAY COMING OUR WAY, WE LEFT BIG THANK YOU VOTES.
Once I got hurt, there really was no way for me to shake off the fear, and once BRAY was on to my fear, we were going nowhere together, I decided that although I really LOVED that horse, I didn't LIKE him very much. I sold him to a young woman at a large show barn, she had far more riding experience than me, plus she had a large support group around her. I was happy for BRAY, I really thought he would do well in that environment. He was such a handsome guy(his picture is a the bottom of the page)So, off he went to his new adventure. Now, here I was back a square one again, just me, Sterly and Jackie, there had to be a horse out there for me....Three weeks after I sold BRAY, I got a call from his new owner, he had an accident in his paddock, when he came in that night, he walked on 3 legs, refusing to put right hind on the ground. She got two veterinary opinions, both agreed after xray and ultrasound that the stifle muscle was torn, prognosis was hopeless. She chose to euthanize. She asked if I'd like to come and say good bye, because he had actually been my horse more than hers. It wasn't suppose to be like this, I had already said good bye once. GOOD MORNING ALL, we left votes on this sunny Saturday morning.
Clean up got under way, basically this property had been left about 15 years ago, the barn closed up the fences left to fall down, the house had been rented over the years and as you can see from the pics, the barn was used as a garbage dump. We had to literally hack the overgrowth away with machetes in order to get inside, we carted away at least half a dozen trailer loads of "junk". It took a good couple of months to get it ready to be a safe comfortable home for Sterl May, but thru all the work I stayed focused on my goal. Once she was settled and happy I would look for a horse to ride. The only issue was Sterl had never been alone and I worried about her stressing by herself, that is where "Jackie" entered the picture (today's profile shot) Our coach, Val had a few boarders, one owed back board, they had a horse and little Jackie, they came in the middle of the night and took the horse but left Jackie, Val gave him to Sterl May for company. Jackie was about 7 when we got him, part mini, part Shetland pony, about 9hh, but don't worry, he didn't know he was little. He became Sterl's "little side kick". Life was good. Feels like winter is back in Ontario. We left chilly, windy votes for all.
The next stage of Sterl May story could go on and on, I'm just going to give you the highlights. Even tho we live in the country, we had no place to keep her, so I gathered my thoughts and started to look for somewhere she could call home. I did have some criteria, like it needed to be safe, preferably with some kind of companion, Sterl has never been alone, it needed to be close enough that I could get there daily to feed etc. my work day starts early and I did not want to be driving all over the country side before work every day. I put the word out every where, I asked neighbors, I literally started knocking on doors. It was not looking good, until finally someone told me about an old abandoned barn not far from where we lived. There was an old shack of a house on the property that was rented to a young man that farmed with his family, he kept the house as a place to get away from work and be alone. But the barn and pasture had been let go for about 15 years. I took a look at it and at first rejected the whole idea, way too much work involved. But after David and one of my brothers hacked their way through the overgrowth around the barn door, they said "this could work". I used my imagination, the barn had water and electric, it had a pasture. about 5 acres, it needed fencing, but I saw in my mind a safe peaceful home for my girl. I located the owners, I told them my story. It was like it was meant to be. These people owned this property and had planned that one day when they retire, they would build on this land, they where huge animal lovers and where touched by my dedication to Sterl May. They said "if you think that place will work for you, you are welcome to it" the only restriction was, if something goes wrong we don't want to hear about it, I was responsible for the clean up and fencing, and I had to get along with Robert, the tenant in the little house. GOOD MORNING, We left you all a vote. Now that I had an answer although, not the answer I wanted, I have to admit that I did fall apart, there were lots of tears. Reaction varied at the barn, most were understanding and sympathetic but remember the lady that said I needed to "hit her harder", well she said "I don't know what you're crying about, you just sell her and get something else, it's not like you raised from a baby" I have never believed that animals were disposable, and I promised Sterl a home until the day she died. But, reality set in David said that I could not continue to pay board to go 4x a week to simply pat her, there was the wear and tear on the vehicle and the gas for all the travelling back and forth, for what, I can't ride her. I needed to THINK. bringing her home was not an option, we had no land or barn. I didn't know what to do, YET, but I knew I WAS NOT GETTING RID OF HER. Here is an early morning vote for you, STERL MAY and I appreciate all the wonderful support, thank you.
Dr. Cook went to the University Hospital to go over Sterl's case with her Drs, he then came to us to explain the diagnosis in detail. This type of condition is sometimes seem in very high end dressage horses, because they are held in such tight collection for long periods, enormous stress is placed on the spine, it is sometimes caused from something like a fall eg. a horse flips over in cross ties, or an accident in a trailer, that type of thing, also studies have shown that pacing Standardbreds are more susceptible because of the diagonal motion of the legs during pacing, BINGO, STERL IS PACER BRED. Regardless of how it happened the outcome is the same. Sometimes with rest and time the bones will actually fuse, therefore no more rubbing of bone on bone and so no pain.
The bottom line was Sterl's riding days were over. Dr. Cook suggested that I give her a year off and try her again, in the meantime, she will learn to accommodate herself, she won't do anything that hurts, I now had a pet....see you tomorrow, Love DONNA LEE & STERLY GIRLYCome visit me, Sterl May````PROUD TO BE HOTM````, Angel Sassy Mac & Friends & Royal Mes.

GOOD MORNING ALL, LEFT YOU A VOTE, Thanks for being patient with the story, I don't want to bore you if they are too long. Have you heard the expression "egg on my face"? well, that is exactly how all these Dr's felt as they went over Sterl's xrays, here is the diagnosis "xrays revealed sclerosis,periosteal proliferation,decreased interspinous space and lytic cysts along the 14-18 thoracic vertebrae" to break that down it means that the bones of her spine are rubbing bone on bone and causing her great pain, add a saddle and weight and it it even greater...One of her Dr's said after reading the xrays he could not believe that she let me on her back at all, he said "all I can say is your horse has ONE HELL OF A HEART" I already knew that. In such cases sometimes cortisone is injected into the spaces, so they brought in a Dr. to assess that option, it was determined that there was not enough room to get the needle in, surgery was discussed but not recommended, we were offered an acupuncture treatment and we took it, they said improvement could take up to 2 weeks, if nothing happened it wasn't going to help. It didn't. GOOD MORNING ALL, LEFT YOU A VOTE. Today's story is my personal favorite, here it is. Lessons were going well, we were becoming quite comfortable with one another, she loved her trot poles and her friend Doolie. She was learning to flex and bend but our canter was pretty rough. Sterl would anticipate my asking and she would throw herself into it off her front, not pretty. Our instructor said if we start her on some small jumps it will help her learn to use her hind end. Sterl was already a bit of a "wonder horse" around the barn. Lots of the other riders would chuckle "you can't ride a Standardbred" We practiced our two point, our release on the flat then, when we were ready we planned to jump next lesson. Word spread thru the barn like wildfire "she is going to jump that horse, Standardbred's can't jump" So, here we are next lesson, Val has a couple of TINY xrails set up, Sonya and Doolie were there, I was as nervous as can be. We do our warm up, get sort of relaxed, just then I notice that quite a crowd has gathered at the rail. They are all there to see a Standardbred jump. I trot around the arena, line up, get in two point, get ready for my release,PANIC..I turn my head to the right and CLOSE MY EYES... when I opened them we were on the other side of the jump, STERLY DID IT, Standardbred's can jump. Digit doing so good
Finally had a trainer out to finish and fine tune this feisty big boy..... he was perfect for her!! I am happy about this since I know I have done a good job getting him this far in his training..... I am also not happy about this because it makes it difficult for the trainer to correct the issues I am having!!!!
