I was impressive with Hobby Lobby, somewhat....but over whelming. So many choices. I had fun reading all the signs and posters. I was looking for chains to put some horse charms on for Christmas gifts. Found a cute little deer/buck ornament for Dominic, since he was the only one to get a buck this season. To do the work on Mikey's denture, would take 4 hours, so went to Farm and Fleet, and filled nearly all the animals Christmas list. Grizzly got canned cat food, Sadie wanted more treats and of course more dog food, Shadow got a soft bed, that I used coming home. Whisper, Willow and Mistit got more treats. Brought mineral blocks for cows and one for new Highlanders and Jack. Menards next stop and Mike got some things he wanted, and I brought fuzzy socks for any littler (teenagers) girls that I know....they will also get a necklace with horse charm. Picked up decks of kids card games, for any younger kids that stop here. See when Mikey was home, all his friends would come here, well, most of them have kids that came along, so now they stop to tell us Merry Christmas and I always have a little gift for kids and a box of homemade cookies and candies for them to take home. If I see them in a store, they always stop and chat and ask about the horses and animals....my reward....even if I never remember what their names are. They grow up so fast and change in looks.

Did your Mom get to go out for Black Friday shopping?? I stayed home like a good girl and cut and wrapped venison. Will make sausage later. Scraps we feed to the chickens and the clean up the bones. Dogs do not get them unless they are cooked first. But Mikey's girl friend went to Farm and Fleet and I did get 4 bags of "All purpose grain", for 4.25 a 50 pound bag. Sort of a sweet feed, which will help the new Scottish Highlander bull put on some weight. He never had grain before, and sort of thin for our winters, the heifer was like that too, when she came. Backbone sticks out a bit and no fat to speak of. He is getting alot more friendlier, at least comes to me and stands about 5 feet away. His name is Harry and hers Harriet, other calf is Jack.

Wow, even have Thanksgiving dishes all done up. Have a few more minutes now to send out votes. We had 10 for dinner yesterday. Mikey's girl friend made the turkey, which was home raised. Other than the buns, everything was raised in my garden, at least veggies, and all the pickles veggies. No I did not harvest wheat to make the buns. :). Surprised that the pumpkins pie tasted good, but I did cheat and buy bought pie crust....I did practice making crust, but even the dogs would not eat them, Jack the calf loved them. So the hardest part of making the pie, was making the round pie crust into a square cake pan.....but I made it do. Had a couple of guest, just friends of one or two of my sons, who had no where to go, so just tell them come along.

Boy, what a difference one day makes. Yesterday morning did chores with sweatshirt, no hat, no gloves....then it rained, cold rain and temps dropped all day. Winds really picked up, after 6, buckets everywhere. Down to 24 this morning, and some snow, not even tracking snow. Very windy, but what a start to deer hunting season, usually we have enough snow at least a few inches, that do not melt, and winter was here to stay. Chickens and other birds stayed, inside. Only, because of the strong winds, they might start heading South otherwise. :) Heard some shooting this morning, and all the horses are staying close to the barn/shed. Since do not have that winterized, but it takes more than just Mike and me to do it. Want to use the bucket on the tractor, to push dirt up along the East side, and hang a tarp in the North doorway. There is a doorway on each side, which are at least 12 x 12, big enough for a tractor to drive threw and clean if needed. Soon we will put the Scottish Highlanders in with the other 2 steers, and Whisper and Willow, but everyone is still on pasture and a large round bale to eat.

Rained most of the day, sometimes really poured, horses stayed in the shed, because if they stepped out, its pure mud about a foot deep, other door way is worst. It was about 4-5 inches of rain in the buckets which were empty. It's raining out now, but not hard, just enough to get stuff wet. Mike is off to Eau Claire again for Tristan, but my brother in law, was forced...like talked in to forced to go along. Keep Mike company. Hopefully, I can get more canning done. Did 2 batches of tomatoes yesterday afternoon. That's 14 qts, of like strew tomatoes. Also did a batch of salsa, and one of green tomatoes relish, but these are still draining off the juice, and I will add the vinegar and salt, sugar, spices cook them and then put them into jars and can them. Guess what...there will be more in a day or so.

Weather is feeling more like fall, a few nights with 35, but usually in the 40's. Got home from Mass yesterday afternoon, and not one horse...pony...of steer were in the field. Took a bit to find them, got all the horses in first, and then tracked down the steers and new heifer in or at the edge of the neighbors corn field. Finally got everyone in, and it was getting dark. I guess all that walking and running made me tired because I slept until 7 this morning.

Hope you have a enjoyable Labor Day weekend.
New heifer...still no name for her...got into the pen with the other 2 steers. They are twice as big as she is. We had put Little Black, in with her hoping he would teach her how to eat grain, since she needs some fat for winter, but he showed her, if you push right her, the gate will move and we can go into the big field. And she listen, so all afternoon, she followed Cookie and Little Black around, and then followed them back in a night. But had to put all the horses and ponies into the pen where the new heifer was in, and everyone was sure ready to run this morning.

Mike is still going to be "bumming" today, have to run to Ladysmith for grocery shopping, then to Phillips after school to watch the high school football game, and bring Dominic home with him. Saturday to Mass, and Sunday to Tomahawk for his oldest brother family get together. I get alot of work done when he is not here. All small jobs, but lots of cleaning in the garden and feed it to the little pigs, and their moms. If you check under Willows page, I put a picture of the Scottish Highlander heifer, who is a yr old.

Well another day of driving for Mike today. Yesterday, he took our dryer to Tristan in Eau Claire, (90 some miles), and today to Marshfield a bit over 100 miles to take Mikey in for his wound dr.'s appointment. Hopefully, they can get to the bottom of his toe issues. I didn't go along yesterday, canned tomatoes and make a big batch of green tomato relish. Just packed tomatoes whole in jars, no juice like stewed tomatoes without the celery. Full canner of 7 quarts, and 8 pint size of gr. tom relish. My Mom is going along to visit with her older sister in the nursing home. I get to stay home....saving all my days staying home so I can go to the Neilsville Central Wis Horse Sale on Sept. 20th. 4 day sale, but Saturday is riding horses. Lots of draft and machinery the first 3 days. 40 yr old sale event.

Enjoy our time with Tristan, short as it was. Takes about hour and half to get there, visited awhile at the trailer, and Mike helped him fix or showed him how to fix a few things. Dominic played with a kitten that one of the roommate has. Dominic has wanted a kitten for a long time, so Tristan told me he thought the littermate might still be available. So he just might be the best and only brother Dominic has, but I know ahead of time his Mom will not let him keep it, but he also know that GrMa will.:) Our grass is the same way, sometimes, its like a hay field. I save the clipping, feed some to the pigs, but dry the rest, and use it for the chicken coop and baby chick pens. Funny, how Mother Nature always seems to keep us busy. In fact, it is pouring outside now.

Whisper, Willow and the little herd are again sending quick votes. Got alot of little jobs done while Dominic was here. Made a old book shelf, which was in my tack room, into a chicken box nest. Fitted the front with small board, and put in dividers, the filled each with dry grass clippings from the lawn. Then Dominic collected eggs and put one in each hole. Dug up a 40 yr old pneonia plant and planted most of the roots next to the house. Worked on digging out more cockburrs and bringing them to the big pile I have started. Finally, we took him home, he said he was ready for a rest....he likes to work and we pay him each time, and feed that kid good. He loves fried potatoes, so he helps me make them so he can do it at home. We even dug up a few plants and he had baby reds...and some whites fresh from the garden

Have to rush again this morning. Someone coming around 11 to buy some chicks and a few keets. Hope its enough to buy feed next week. Temps were in the 40's yesterday and very breezey, but good weather for fixing fence. Mike did most of it, while I make another pen for guineas keets...time to move them out of big rabbit cage. Willow finally got to go in with whisper, as ponies and all went into the hay field, now they have 10 acres to run and run they did, of course Willow limped most of the time after, but so good to hear the "thunder of hooves" even if they were little beats.

Sunday vote from Whisper, Willow and the little herd for you. NIce out today....so far...getting some jobs done outside, that usually is too hot out in the morning to do. Trying to move the turtle cage out to the shed for the little keets, because they are out growing their rabbit cage. The turtle cage is about 5 feet high, 4 ft wide and 10-12 ft long, and no bottom, so they can learn to scratch in the dirt. Because its made from chicken wire, I can put long sticks in for roosts, also put branches, and plants so that they learn to hide in the grasses. I feed them clover and grasses now, but cut it up with the scissors. They are too small to be out with the little chicks, yet. The keets have one fault, they hide their little heads into a hole....like between the hay bales, when being picked on, thinking they can not be seen, but they do not know how to move backwards, only forwards, so they get deep between the bales and die. They are a very smart bird...except for that one stupid fault. So I keep them safe until they are older. Most are spoken for except for the ones I will keep...some different colors than what I have now

Some good new on Mistit...her milk is now yellow, before it was just white coloring. Still keep her separated at night, just incase. Rainy again today, but not a all day rain, but enough to make everything sticky and humidity sort of bad. Try to chop down "cock-bur or burdock" this morning, and some are getting like little trees. Like to do them just before they seed out, it is like a small ball of sticky seeds which get in the horses manes and tails, and nearly impossible to get out.

Going to storm today, Mike is taking Mikey to his dr. appointment, and will stop and get me "another" bag of chick starter. Probably, would not need it, but when I sell keets or chicks, I send some feed with them. Sometimes, a 3 pound coffee can full, and with the month old chicks eating like they were starving, 50 pounds goes very fast.
Humidity is so high that the floors, (wood) are wet. Everything is sticky, including my keyboard. Baby sitting 2 little yappers, (dogs) for the past week, Barky is the worst, because he likes to live up to his name. Chance is a Yorkie and wants out and two seconds later wants in....runs back and forth between the front and back door barking. I go to let him in and he is already running to the other door. Stay cool!!

Still working on the outdoor stove, it is working, "but" now the water is not coming around threw out the house. We have hot water heat, and someplace in a pipe there must be a airlock. Here I thought our house would be warm tonight, but maybe not. Weather is miserable outside. Still rainy and cold. Moved one batch of chicks to the calf hutch, moved the bigger ones to the little room in the chicken coop, so soon they will be going outside. Making room in the back of the shed so ponies can have a pen on that side, has large siding door, and then their pen Mistic will get because it has a large pen outside under the lento where when she foals, I can put them to keep them safe. May 23 is due date.

Was busy digging a hole to put in the plastic pond for the turtles, have to be near a plug in, so that means next to the house. Hubby, finished digging it this morning. Have a long cage big enough to walk in, to put over the top and still have about 5-6 feet so they can crawl out of the water. I sure hope my flowers and plants grow like I picture them in my mind. We had snow/sleet/rain from last evening to this morning. So spring must be hiding again.

Quick voting this morning before I do chores Can hear the birds singing outside, and little chicks starting to peep in the incubator. Going to start putting in the pond for the turtles today, needs electric for the filters so thinking next to the house or even in the day lillys over by the garage, even have the large cage to put over the top of everything, to keep them safe. Want to dig now while the ground is soft, since it has rained the last two days. Ponies seem to like to stay inside again, before they kept walking to the door like they wanted out, but that means more pen cleaning. Been trying to keep it clean, so all I had to do was put down lime, to kill anything in the soil, (it has dirt floor), then the sawdust, and straw, before Mistic has to use it for her baby. She other wise will be outside all day, and come in at night. So much for a quick vote, huh. :)

More snow this morning about 4-5 inches but the wind is blowing so bad, some drifts are a foot deep, it was hard to walk to do chores, because the snow is blowing off the roofs and trees. Did not bother to even let chickens and guinea hens out. Chickens for some reason love to eat the snow off my boots, perhaps because I tell them its Ice Cream....:) Woman called to say she could not make it today to buy 8 of the guinea hens, but can make it on Tuesday. Another girl was coming for some baby chicks and did not show up yesterday. Was hoping to get enough to buy the spring shots for the ponies and Whisper. Well, I did call Jeffers and ordered already, so it will go out Monday.

Well, do you need a cat named Angel, who it seems loves to go up the tallest trees, without the foggiest idea how to get back down, other than to meow to me, in a pitiful voice. This time was not as high up and a few branches, but standing on the top of a 15 ft ladder, trying to drag him off his perch on the next branch, is very hard, when he was again digging in with all 8 feet and claws. But we made it, is only a few scratches to my hands and face, one too near my eye, but next time will put on goggles. Note: It says "next" time.

On day, 22 I woke up to little peepers. Still hatching, and I can only look in tiny holes, to see what is inside. Friday, night, I will open up the incubator, to take them out. Hopefully, I can sell a few this year to help pay for the feed. If not, I can always use more eggs, to trade for other things. I guess, if you "have to" have a bad habit, horses, ponies and chickens aren't too bad of ones. Oh, yes, can forget the rabbits. Nice out, but lots of cool air with moisture. Yesterday was so nice, clean the little ones pen most of the afternoon, hauled out 9 wheelbarrow full, across the driveway and then across the lawn, to where I want to make a new flowerbed.....like I do not have enough of them, and worked until my wheelbarrow and broken hand manure fork started complaining they were getting tired. By then it was time to bring in the clothes I washed and hung outside, usually I dry them inside on one of those old wooden racks, like the old Grandmas use to use. Today is warm too, yesterday I seen the temps up to nearly 60, but now it will rain and very foggy out. Not alot of snow left, but plenty of water, which I love walking threw.....must be the kid in me, or just because my boots do not leak yet.

The kitten was a "drop off" so in other words just dumped. We get so many of them, living out in the country. At least here, they do get care, and working with a county rescue group, get them fixed. Mostly, they stay out in the barn and have food out there. Right now he is being a pest in the basement, because he needed to be warmed up, and make sure he was not going to be sick. So far so good. He is only about 4-6 mts. This coming week, it will start warming up again, and he can go outside again to play. The tree he was in is huge, and had plenty of shelter, where the clump of branches were together. I think I will have to change his name to Angel, which I felt he was going to be.

Well, good news, I got the kitten down. Was not a easy job, had to get the tractor with the bucket, I went into the bucket with a 12 ft ladder, bumpy ride all the way up, because my hubby is just learning how to use the bucket. Still with the 12 ft ladder, it was about 3 feet to short to even reach the branches he was on. I went up the ladder, balancing on a branch I was hanging on, and still could not get my hands on him. Finally, my husband was brave enough, with his artificial knees to stand on the top of the tractor and hold the ladder still, so I could actually get to the top ring, and I pulled him down to me. He is hanging on for dear life, because he could see down, good thing I did not look because we were up about 35-40 ft, and it was so windy that the ladder was moving and the bark on the tree was so uneven that I could not find a spot to put it flat. Now, he is in the basement where it is warm, and having a breakfast of warm milk and tuna. He was starting to get sick, his eyes were matted up, and after 3 days, of nearly 0 windy cold weather getting a cold. Well, good new, he still has at least 8 lifes left.

In between this sharp cold wind, icy conditions, we have a kitten stuck up a tree. Its about 50 ft straight up. The tree is next to the house, so I did go out threw the window, onto the story and a half side of the house, walk out on the peak, and try to call him down, but only small branches hang out over the peak. Of course, we have a metal roof, and it is so slippy with my winter rubber boots. Its been up there for 2 days now, and we did try to use a rope to see if we can pull down on the branch.....to be continued.

Mother Nature must have thought today is April Fool's Day. Some places in Wisconsin were up to 60 yesterday, (we got up to 45-50 range) and today will be down to 8-18, depending where you live. Even some places are having winter storm warnings. Wind is just terrible, had to chase down a bucket, I put down when I went into the chicken coop, it ended up across the lawn, and over the field, into the ditches, and the brush helped me catch it. Silly, bucket, thought it could just run away and really make it.

Mother Nature was very generous yesterday. We were nearly up to 45 most of the day, but coming home from Mass late in the day, I see the car's reading said 51, but dropped quickly. Snow really took a beating, can see a "few" bare spots coming in the fields, but with frozen ground, its hard for the water to run downwards, but I did not see too many puddles, driveway is icy. Whisper will have to send your herd some apple seeds to plant for your own apple trees, like she has. Doesn't hurt that she has her own servant either. :)
