How We Met

We needed a new trail horse and found Cowboy's ad. The prior owner is so sad to let him go, but we are happy he is coming to join our horsey family.

Cowboy has arrived at his new home Friday, 4/13/2012. First all the horses are inside the barn to begin getting used to each other.
4/14/2012 - Cowboy was in the Round Pen for preliminary introduction to his new stablemates. Rocky likes him!! Yay
4/17/2012 I rode Cowboy on the trail 1st time. He was out already twice for testing with my daughter riding and was good. :)
4/24/12 Cowboy is turned out with Rocky for the 1st time & they do great together - as in nothing happened.
5/14/12 - 1st away trail ride for Cowboy (with Comet)! Cowboy is a champ!
5/26/12: Cowboy is turnout with the full herd on the pasture. Everything goes well but he's staying close to Rocky when the others approach.
6/10/12: Saratoga Battlefield National Park Trailride
6/23/12: Grafton State Park Ride
8/7/12: 1st solo trail ride on Cowboy
8/4/13 - Cowboy shows in English Open Pleasure and in his 1st show took 3 blues and the show champion for Open Pleasure! Way to go, Cowboy (& rider, my daughter).
Nov 7&8, 2013: Cowboy is ridden at the Equine Affaire in W.Springfield MA by my daughter in two of Julie Goodnight's clinics. The training my daughter has been doing on Cowboy is showing. I am so proud of the team!
Dec 25 2014 - I gave Cowboy to my daughter for Christmas.

Seems hotter this summer than last summer. Wish I could stay home and out of the heat until it cools down, but life calls. Work, errands, etc. I haven't seen any scorpions, so far, and don't want to. Have an awesome day. Lots of love, always, and a vote.

When I hear of your weather, I am glad I live in Northern Wisconsin. We get hot, but nothing like you and the others in Texas, and other Southern states have.
Just took keets, (baby guniea hens) out of incubator. I "think" I have about 20, plus 2 more than their little legs were stuck into the plastic mesh at the bottom. stuck and swollen so one we had to cut the plastic to get it out, and I had rubbed baby oil on each trying to slip it out. I hope they make it. They are so hard to count...its like counting ants. Still no baby, and she is big. Have to recount days from when I was first told she was bred, 21 days. I think I did it wrong last time, but she certainly is bred. I still get on Willow each night, for a bit. Ride her out in her pasture with just the lead rope. Stay cool and drink alot....well that did not come out right....drink alot of water.....that sounds better. :)

Mike's incision will not stop bleeding. Called back to the hospital, said to bring him back....100 miles one way. Figured if I put a pressure bandage on it, perhaps that would help. His friend next door is staying with him, she know alot about taking care of him, since she had to take care of both her Mom and Dad. You can not put pressure anywhere up his leg, because of the stint. They have his leg opened up on both sides of his knee, about 7-8 inch and I think left the bottom open. He has to be on blood thinner because of his heart.
I sure understand what you mean about the heat and humidity. Bad here too, but it did sprinkle around 4 just as we were walking into church for 4 o'clock Mass. Then later it rained hard, and around 4-5 this morning started all over again. Still have all of Sunday before I can check how many baby keets I have in the incubator. If I open it, the humidity leaves and shrink wraps the unhatched ones. So I wait and peek in a tiny airhole. Plastic one so I keep it in the Styrofoam box it came in, to keep the heat in. Baby pigs go from one pen to the other, white sow is a much better MaMa, she lets all the babies nurse. They have chubby little cheeks and butts. Some of the baby chicks I let out of their rabbit cage, but sure is a pain to try to round them all up in the evening. Been waiting until the all try to climb into their feed pans, and put the whole pan chicks and all back in the cage. Have get back out in the garden to weed as soon as this heat ends. I do not sweat, just get red, red face, and never know when I am too hot. Something is broke inside with my thermostat. :) Stay cool everyone!!

I guess I will never complain about the cold, when the heat is this bad. 10 o'clock and horses have all ran into the shed. We brought all the round bales in this morning, Mike brought them in, and I just help make sure he is getting them straight. So while he is doing that, I moved most of the baby chicks, now about 3 weeks old into the chicken coop, there is a separate little room in there, for feed, but feed never gets into it, so nice place for chicks. They have out grown their large rabbit cage. At least there is a window to open.
Baby guineas, (keets) are hatching now, I can hear them inside the incubator. Have another batch due next Saturday. Wanted to take them to the next swap on the 30th, but that is our family reunion, (Mike's side) this time near Minneapolis, about 3-4 hours away. Most people are staying over night, but we have no one to check on critters, so we will just go for a bit and come home. Stay cool, sorry I did not read any one's comments to me, so will try to catch up later on any news.

Everyone's prayers must be working, because surgery went well. So I want to Thank Everyone!! My son has spent more time in the hospitals and clinics, than all of us put together. When he had his transplants they told us 2 weeks, 3 at the most, well he was there from Feb. 24th until the end of July, and then out a few days and back in for nearly another 3 mts. He had a infection "someplace", I figured right where his home dialysis tubes when into his stomach, but that is the only place they did not check, since it is suppose to be mainly fatty tissues.

Surgery went good, seen some pictures he sent me, foot and toes looked like a big balloon with digits. He said his hip hurts him very bad. I sure hope the stints work, because other wise he will loose his foot, with his toes always being infected. They did remove one toe, about 5 yrs ago, since it was being forced way out of place. Yrs ago, he was in a 4-wheeler accident, and drs. said his foot was not broke, and I kept telling them something was wrong with it, well, after him walking on it for nearly 2 weeks, yep, it was broke and they had to go in threw the top of his foot, so his whole foot is litterly smashed down with 2 long scars about 6 inch long, I am sure that is why he has issues now.

Very humid today, still calling for rain, but high temps too. At least 84 now, but there is a nice breeze too. Had to run to get a part for the tractor, so sort of late for me, about 11 now. We have about 15-16 acres of hay, only cut about half of it down and had a guy round bale it. Going to try out a small sq. baler to put up the hay from new seeding. We did not want to take the chance of getting it down, then get rained on because it is thick. Trouble is no barn the type where you had a hay mount like the old barns. Can store some inside side the shed, but not more than a 150.

Whisper, Willow, and the little herd are sending you a vote. Hay was cut yesterday, all except where we planted new seeding. Because that will take longer to dry, and its calling for rain again. Before, the weather station said rain on Thursday, then changed it Wednesday. So we left that part, going to small bale it, then try to figure out where to store it.

A vote from Whisper, Willow and the little herd. Cloudy today and is suppose to rain. Can not get 3 nice days in a row to make hay, and since we do not have equipment have to have neighbors help. I finished the garden, at least of pulling 5 gallon buckets of weeds out. I have been eating beets and carrots already, plus things that grow fast like lettuce and radishes. Cucumbers, winter and summer squash, way too many tomatoes, since I had to replant about 16 of them, I now have close to 25 plants, many just come up by themselves, and I move them to a row, or a place where something did not grow. Dill is growing here and there, but I also plant it in flower beds, since butterflies like to lay their eggs on it. Potatoes are now have flowers. Flower beds mostly can take care of themselves, since they are "grow where you fall" type gardens. Lots of them about 17 small ones, and all around the house. I have no color theme, just what the butterflies and birds like. I have one corner of the house, where the water hose comes out, that I need to redo, since I had to dig it up, but this year, I just planted pumpkins there, to keep the weeds down.

Good Morning vote from Whisper, Willow, and the little herd. "Today" I take it all back about Pickles being a "problem child", he was so good, I guess him having to be in the other pen, made him be on his best behavior. So, he got staked outside of the pen, (with Mistit) as a treat. Let me put his halter on and gave him a treat, and he followed me out, without tugging, did a few whoa, and "kissing" to step up. We'll see what the day brings with him.

Spent most of yesterday, in between the rain showers on my knees, not praying in church, but weeding the garden. Nearly caught up, still have the one row left between the potatoes and squash, planted another package of beets, because I have been picking nice size beets, and also carrots. The rabbits, Auroa, BB, and guinea pig, Raisin, said they are ready and taste great.Just North of us, road have been washed out, over 0 inches of rain, 3 people died. 30 some people, camping had to be rescued at a camping ground. Seen pictures, and its a messy. North of us is a big tourist area. I wish I had smaller gates to make little stalls, and a better way to clean them out. Right now, I have one big pen inside the shed, and a fenced in area under the lean-to part of the shed. So when I open back big door, it has a long 20 ft board up to keep ponies out of the small sq. bales of hay, and then the 2 side doors, its stays breeze and cooler inside, but also makes a messy with poop and being wet. So, I have been trying to see where I could bring Pickles in or outside the shed, daily to work with him, by himself, without all his little friends being in the way. I hope your weather clears up for you. We, too, have been getting rain, but I know enough not to complain. Nice yesterday, besides the rain, had around 70's.

Things are always busy here, never seem to have enough time, to really finish most jobs. Trying to get weeds pulled from the garden, pulled 5 - 5gal bucket full, like just packed them in, for the pigs and guinea hens that have to stay in, because they do not listen very well....take after me, I guess. They like to go on the road, so I lock the hens in and let the 2 males out, and 1 in. Later, this evening after supper, I let them all out, but then I can be out weeding flower beds and keep a eye on them better. I ride Willow a bit each evening, and try to work with Pickles too. Too many little ones around to get any place with him. I have never seen a horse so afraid of hands, unless I start behind him. If he is tied, he is not bad, but out in the pen, its like always out of reach. He is not aggressive, and I can start at his but and work my way up to his head, or under his chin, as long as the hands are out of site. I wish he could talk to tell me what happened to him. Paisley is nothing like that at all.

Mares are suppose to come into their cycle every 21 days, so if I took the first date given, June 23, then count another 3 weeks, into July, August to see what dates Mistit "could" have been bred, go back one month, plus 1 day, is around her due date, well, 2 of those months have passed, (May and June) so only have July and Aug left. I got her in Sept.
The little piglet I was trying to bottle feed did not make it. I am sure the mother knew something was wrong with it, that is why she kept trying to bury it. But the other 5 are running around on those tiny high heel shoes of theirs. Their legs are so long compared to their body, and pointy little hooves, so they look like little high heel shoes that women wear.

MaMa pig is fine. She gets up a lot more than what I remember our other sows, (from yrs ago) did, but I really think it was because the heat. The baby pigs are so cute and tiny compared to her, she is a good Mama. I see her push the babies into one spot with her nose, before she lays down. Her 350 pounds would surely, squash them.
I have my camera all ready. to take some first pictures of Mistit's foal. I just hope I figured out all the days right, by counting back 21 days from the first date that I was told she was bred. I still say she like her special treatment. Going to rain today. Yesterday, we moved the fence next to the woods getting ready to cut the hay field. Our son worked up a small deer plot, and we planted that with sugar beets. Moved little chicks out out to the shed into large rabbit cages and kept the baby keets in, well, until they get bigger.

Sorry, I did not get you leave everyone a vote lately. Usually, I figure, in the evening I will have more time, which means I never have more time after supper. I have such issues with the "pop-ups" and it takes me forever to finish. Late last night the white sow, (pig) decided its time to make a nest. So of course she picks the deepest hole in her pen, not under her lean to, where there is shelter, and clean, started carrying the grass I was picking for her and beet tops to line the nest. I gave her hay so she would stop trying to rip the traps off the lean to. Well, this morning no babies yet, still pushing, first one sometimes is born stillborn, and plugging the way. Mother Pigs are not something like a dog or cat and go sit with them, they will eat there young, if they get mad or bother, specially since we did not raise them. I have been going into the pen and letting them get use to me "bothering" them. Normal, if she does what my pigs we had before, they lay for about 3 days until the baby pigs are strong enough to get out of the way when MaMa lays back down, or she will squash them. But tomorrow is calling for rain, and that hole will fill up with water, so we went out and put in a few more steel pole and built her a tent.
