How We Met

We needed a new trail horse and found Cowboy's ad. The prior owner is so sad to let him go, but we are happy he is coming to join our horsey family.

Cowboy has arrived at his new home Friday, 4/13/2012. First all the horses are inside the barn to begin getting used to each other.
4/14/2012 - Cowboy was in the Round Pen for preliminary introduction to his new stablemates. Rocky likes him!! Yay
4/17/2012 I rode Cowboy on the trail 1st time. He was out already twice for testing with my daughter riding and was good. :)
4/24/12 Cowboy is turned out with Rocky for the 1st time & they do great together - as in nothing happened.
5/14/12 - 1st away trail ride for Cowboy (with Comet)! Cowboy is a champ!
5/26/12: Cowboy is turnout with the full herd on the pasture. Everything goes well but he's staying close to Rocky when the others approach.
6/10/12: Saratoga Battlefield National Park Trailride
6/23/12: Grafton State Park Ride
8/7/12: 1st solo trail ride on Cowboy
8/4/13 - Cowboy shows in English Open Pleasure and in his 1st show took 3 blues and the show champion for Open Pleasure! Way to go, Cowboy (& rider, my daughter).
Nov 7&8, 2013: Cowboy is ridden at the Equine Affaire in W.Springfield MA by my daughter in two of Julie Goodnight's clinics. The training my daughter has been doing on Cowboy is showing. I am so proud of the team!
Dec 25 2014 - I gave Cowboy to my daughter for Christmas.

Hi Cowboy. Sissy's doing well. I still have to license her. Hopefully, next week. She's so spoiled. She went from not stepping foot inside the house, to begging to come in and stay in. Love and a vote.

I was impressive with Hobby Lobby, somewhat....but over whelming. So many choices. I had fun reading all the signs and posters. I was looking for chains to put some horse charms on for Christmas gifts. Found a cute little deer/buck ornament for Dominic, since he was the only one to get a buck this season. To do the work on Mikey's denture, would take 4 hours, so went to Farm and Fleet, and filled nearly all the animals Christmas list. Grizzly got canned cat food, Sadie wanted more treats and of course more dog food, Shadow got a soft bed, that I used coming home. Whisper, Willow and Mistit got more treats. Brought mineral blocks for cows and one for new Highlanders and Jack. Menards next stop and Mike got some things he wanted, and I brought fuzzy socks for any littler (teenagers) girls that I know....they will also get a necklace with horse charm. Picked up decks of kids card games, for any younger kids that stop here. See when Mikey was home, all his friends would come here, well, most of them have kids that came along, so now they stop to tell us Merry Christmas and I always have a little gift for kids and a box of homemade cookies and candies for them to take home. If I see them in a store, they always stop and chat and ask about the horses and animals....my reward....even if I never remember what their names are. They grow up so fast and change in looks.

Looks like spring outside, with all the mud. Let chickens and guineas out, they have not gotten to go out, not that they even wanted to with the rain, wind and cold/snow. Steers and Whisper, Willow and Mistic returned to the big field, if not for eating, just for a good gallop. They have lots of room to run inside their winter and the pen I put them in at night, but with that many hooves also too much mud right now.

Did your Mom get to go out for Black Friday shopping?? I stayed home like a good girl and cut and wrapped venison. Will make sausage later. Scraps we feed to the chickens and the clean up the bones. Dogs do not get them unless they are cooked first. But Mikey's girl friend went to Farm and Fleet and I did get 4 bags of "All purpose grain", for 4.25 a 50 pound bag. Sort of a sweet feed, which will help the new Scottish Highlander bull put on some weight. He never had grain before, and sort of thin for our winters, the heifer was like that too, when she came. Backbone sticks out a bit and no fat to speak of. He is getting alot more friendlier, at least comes to me and stands about 5 feet away. His name is Harry and hers Harriet, other calf is Jack.

So much to do before Thanksgiving. Tristan came with his kitten, Grizzly, who Grandma gets to babysit for. He has long days at school and then a field trip in Dec. to either North or South Dakota for school trip. Still very cold, but winds have let up. I feel sorry for all the people in the East when are now getting our lefts. We do not have much snow, but Mike's joints is saying more snow coming.

Sissy and Scruffy's vet is a good one. Sissy's doing good. Hard to get her to eat. I'm thinking it's because of her surgery. I crush her medication in her food. She may taste it. Going to apply for her license next week. Because of my schedule this week, I won't get to ride Sassy Butt until next week. Love and a vote.

Boy, what a difference one day makes. Yesterday morning did chores with sweatshirt, no hat, no gloves....then it rained, cold rain and temps dropped all day. Winds really picked up, after 6, buckets everywhere. Down to 24 this morning, and some snow, not even tracking snow. Very windy, but what a start to deer hunting season, usually we have enough snow at least a few inches, that do not melt, and winter was here to stay. Chickens and other birds stayed, inside. Only, because of the strong winds, they might start heading South otherwise. :) Heard some shooting this morning, and all the horses are staying close to the barn/shed. Since do not have that winterized, but it takes more than just Mike and me to do it. Want to use the bucket on the tractor, to push dirt up along the East side, and hang a tarp in the North doorway. There is a doorway on each side, which are at least 12 x 12, big enough for a tractor to drive threw and clean if needed. Soon we will put the Scottish Highlanders in with the other 2 steers, and Whisper and Willow, but everyone is still on pasture and a large round bale to eat.

When Austin took Sissy in, the vet didn't know, for some reason, that she was already spayed until she opened her up. She knocked off around $100, but with getting her microchipped, too, her surgery still cost over $300. Now, I have to get her licensed. She staying in the kitchen. I let her out to go potty and to allow my cats some time to escape my bedroom where they are kept most of the time. Leaving love, always, and a vote.

Our weather is so nice for November. But I know its coming...snow. Snow, I do not mind, but rain/snow mixture is hard to deal with. Everything is so wet then frozen. Mistit still wants to stand outside of the shed. Big enough for a whole herd inside, and I know Whisper always makes her move. I think for the winter she can go in with the calf, Jack, but Jack gets grain and she sure does not need it.
Get 150 bales of small bales of hay, so have to move the large chicken/guinea pen out, and clean where it was. Glad to get extra hay, it will help insulate the over head which slides sideweays.

Calling for cold weather near the end of the week...highs in 30's, lows 20's, and of course snow. But the 19th is opening day of deer gun season, so it is expected. Some yrs we have had blizzard conditions, so this is really too warm for us, but so nice to get firewood in. Which is where we will be going in a bit.

Well. I think we got our "killing frost" last night. Ice on all the water, and heavy frost. Weather should warm up today. Mike's sister Barb will be buried today in Kennan. This is where she was born. Just a cemetery service, and a small luncheon at the local bar/restaurant. Our young bull is coming today. Scottish Highlander same as the heifer. Her name is Harriet, so his will be Harry. Horses are really in a frisky mood lately....must be the cooler weather. Or the deer and other critters moving around with hunting season(s).

Most of the bigger cities are nearly 100 miles of us. 80 is the closest and that is Rhinelander. We have a clinic/hospital at Ladysmith, which is 33 miles, but if you go there, they just send you to one of the bigger hospitals, and then you have 2 bills to pay. Mikey's toes is looking great, so no more twice a day dressing, long way from a few months ago, them removing the toe. Once, they opened up all the closed veins in his lower leg, (They were like that from being a diabetic for 30 years.) his foot, (he only has 1) is now warm and blood circulating. When to St. Vinny's, found 2 Breyer horses for 3 dollars each and a foal for a 1 dollar. Got some ribbons, I need for a few necklace projects, a Christmas wooden rocking horse and a book, to start read going back home. Mike has been so grumpy, so we are not talking. Of course at Farm and Fleet, got cat, puppy food, along with sunflower seeds to mix with the cracked corn and squash/pumpkin seeds and then rendered lard to make bird/chicken food for the winter. Got home and of course deer had to take down one whole line of electric fence and horses and cows were in the north pasture. So got that fixed.

A nap sounds good to me...daylight saving time always throws me off, and I do not sleep well the way it is.
Grizzly will run to Tristan when he gets home from school, and runs right up his leg into his arms. Tristan said he must miss him. There is another young cat at the trailer so they do play.
Have finish up voting and comments later today, need to drive Mikey to his dr. appointment for his toe/wound clinic about 100 miles from here.
Hopefully, I will get to go to Farm and Fleet, it is far better than the one I went to about a week ago. One is Fleet Farm, the other Farm Fleet...they were brothers or cousins who started both chain of farm stores.

Hope everyone got to vote, I was either 84 or 85. Did not check to see who won yet. Our township, with the village, and another township, brought a voting machine, which seemed easy enough to use.
Weather here is still nice, but windy, I know it will not last. Funeral is planned for Saturday for Mike's oldest sister, so trying to get a few things cleaned up, just as fast as Sadie messes it up. She drags all her toys out, or brings sticks, and small pails, my coffee can feed dippers to either the back or front door. Still have a few more flower containers to bring in, I think I have all my gladiolus in, but have to dig up some others.

Finally got some rest. Still drained. I know what PTSD is, and it's horrible. Got to focus on the loving memories. I'm not mad at Sissy, just hurt. I, immediately, wanted to get rid of her. I realize, though, that it was that untamed nature that took over. She looks at me with those puppy eyes. She saw and had to feel what I was going through. I picked Brudder up and held him, too upset to cry, at first. I yelled at her. She backed away and kept her distance. She approached me slowly, yesterday. I could tell she was cautious. I'm thinking she somehow knows what she did was bad. Most people think she should go as I did. Giving her another chance. Something someone else didn't by tossing her out. I noticed she eats like she was one of many and seems to feel she has to eat fast. Someone did take the time to be good to her. If not, I may not be here. I didn't think about the possibility of her turning on me. Because of her loving nature, she didn't. Guess it seems weird that I still consider her loving, but she is. If I'd gotten rid of her, Pa would go back to being mean to Scruffy. He's the ass I should get rid of, but I'm financially stuck. Have a blessed Tuesday. Love and a vote.

From my FB page because I'm too physically and emotionally drained to rewrite this...............My animals are special part of my family. Each with a personality and a gift of love. I've taken a lot of pictures over the years. I'm thankful I did. Along with those pictures, I have memories, too. The new dog attacked Brudder, around 3 am. He was out front, heard me outback and came around to the backdoor. The dog got to him before I did. I yelled, waking neighbors, and ended up on the ground trying to save my cat. Injured, not by the dog, and heartbroken, I could only watch in horror as Brudder was viciously slaughtered in front of me. I know it was an act of untamed nature. I sat on the ground, physically unable to move from the shock and horror. I couldn't breathe. As soon as I was able to get up, I picked Brudder up, walked through the house to the front steps and sat, holding him. Yes, just a cat, but not to me. He was a loving companion.....Leaving love and a vote. Thanks for being there.

I was on HC, first thing in the morning, but we started cutting firewood, more than 2 truck loads full. I got my votes in, but no comments to each. Then around 2 started baking cakes for Dave's birthday party, he died 4 yrs ago, but we still get together and have pizza, (his favorite) and cake and ice cream. Made one apple tort, and a lemon cream cheese cake. Dropped them off at Mikey's before Mass, which was said for him. Did not get home until dark and had to do chores in the dark. Same firewood plan today, but also have to fit getting a baby or young bull deliveried to Mikey's and Jennifer's, for their 2 heifers. Ours will come later. They will be Scottish Highlanders like the heifers. Tristan's kitten Grizzly, hid for about 2 days, but now is coming and playing. Dominic is happy with his surprise phone, Mike told him it was mine, then called it and told him to answer....told him Happy Early Birthday. Got a hug in return, and that kid does not give out hugs easily....I have to steal them for him.

Fast trip to Rice Lake, about 80 miles north of us, with Tristan to get his phone replaced...cracked the screen. Ended up buying one for Dominic birthday in a few days. He has been saving his money we paid him for helping load fire wood, but this was a deal, pay 1 dollar for 24 mts, plus 20 dollars line charge, so hopefully it will be affordable. Got to go to Farm and Fleet had to load up on kitten food because Tristan will be taking Grizzly back when he goes back to Eau Claire for school. He left last night because found out there was an opening for his CLD truck driving class. (Linesman school), I tell him so next time Angel gets up a tree, he goes after him. LOts of frost this morning so horses have to stay in a bit longer.
