How We Met

I found Gracie in a Kill Pen waiting for the slaughter truck to take her, and all horses in the Kill Pen for slaughter in Mexico. Gracie was knowingly sold to a Kill Buyer at auction by her owner. A person at the auction video taped the auction for every horse in it. Gracie was very good, doing EVERYTHING asked of her without any problem. The person riding her was whiping her, spurring her, and jerking on the bit in her mouth for no reason at all. Every horse being ridden had this done to them. And owners that sold horses to the kill buyer knew they sold their horse for slaughter. Horses in the Kill Pen were ridable, but some were so starved and neglected, they needed to recover before any riding could start. The number of horses in the Kill Pen grew, as owners took horses, and put them into the Pen for slaughter. The horses dumped by their owner were clearly denied food and showed visible injuriees from abuse. The first horse to be dumped by his owner was a 7 year old well trained to ride gelding. He was extremely scared, and in a painic. He calmed down the next day, and was a very sweet horse. The next owner to dump her horses in the pen for slaughter brought in two registered Arabian stallions. The stallions were starving, and neglected. One of the studs, was very sad, and would put his head in the arms of anyone visiting the Kill Pen, and begged for love. A picture taken of him doing this is a VERY powerful photo, you can see the heartbreak and misery in his eyes. The horses in this Kill Pen got very lucky, all 16 were saved. 12 horses went to forever loving homes, and the 4 left behind were saved by a rescue. I had one week to get the word out and help save the life of these horses with the help of others. Horses will be in this same Kill Pen from the auction next month. And it will be harder, and harder to help these horses find homes and get a second chance at life every month this happens. The ONLY way to reduce the number of horses in Kill Pens, is to pass a law making it illegal to sell a horse for slaughter in Mexico and Canada..
