How We Met

I saw her last Aug 2011 at our Palomino Show and fell in love with her. Asked if she was for sale, she wasn't.
But came up for sale this springtime, I found her on the internet at a trainer's barn that I know and loved how she progressed in Western Pleasure. I just purchased her on May 29th 2012

Ah, so both hocks? As you say, may as well. When will you get them done? A winter off should help too, right?
Glad the weather has been nice for you. Wow, 60 dogs? Can you imagine? Bless them for their work and you for your donation.
Glad Winter is doing well. She'll be happy to get rid of her "cone of shame". How's Kevin getting along?
Yep, I think some horse time is just what the doctor ordered, lol. Actually, all of sept is going to stay busy. Besides that shelter roof, which I haven't started on, I have a ton of continuing ed stuff to finish for work by the end of this month. I'm pretty caught up on the eeducation stuff, but they've thrown in an extra class, plus my ACLS is due before oct 1. I'm hoping to get all of it finished with one day of classes and tests on monday.
I did do a little 10 min ride on Gracie last night. I really need to get back to Allie, but she has to be tacked up and have a lot of groundwork before I ride and I don't have that much time. Sweet Gracie, I just get on with a halter and lead rope and I get a ride in 10 or 15 mins. We have a game going. She knows the end of the ride is flexing her head both ways laterally as well as vertically at a standstill. So I've been trying to sneak the reins off her neck from where they're resting looped over her withers, and I get them maybe a 1/4 inch off her neck and she tucks her nose in. Got all kinds of slack still in the reins. It's so funny, she's nailed it every time. It's her way of saying, "are we done yet?"
Well, gotta get the day moving. Hope you have a great thur.

Hi Marion, Indy & Paige! That is wonderful news that Kayla came out to ride Paige and it all went so smoothly. At least now you know what to do with Paige to help make her feel a bit better. Enjoy that good night's sleep! It's pretty dark by 7:30pm here as well. By about 7pm is when it's getting dark outside so ya, not so fun. I am enjoying the cooler weather a bit though, but not the shorter days that are coming. Well I'm off to see Koot after work today. Have a great day! Voted. XOXO Danya and Koot

Sorry I wasn't on HC yesterday, I worked 2 in a row, and there just isn't time for anything but work and sleep those days. Seems like I'm doing more of those back to backs lately. But that does free up the rest of my week.
Glad Kayla could come ride and diagnose Paige for you. Sounds like Paige likes the western pleasure style, ie, stay out of my mouth. Who wouldnt, right? Did she recommend both hocks to be injected?
Glad Jose missed you. Seems like just south and east of you catches a lot of bad weather? Poor souls. The Atlantic seems bent on firing off one after another lately.
Not much here. It's back to dry and pretty hot, hit 90 today. Still too busy to ride, plus I've caught a cold. Shouldn't complain, I just get grumpy when I can't ride, lol.
Well, hope you have a great hump day. Take care.

Did you and Honey get your daily walk in?? Or get rained out. It is nice to have someone else help with the work, isn't it. We started setting up the pellet stove today, moved it where it needs to be, and trying to figure out the piping.
Dominic should be a good driver, likes to tease alot. We had thunder and lightening storms early this morning around 4 until 8. Everything is wet outside, so worked up stairs getting down fall decorations and going threw them. I find such treasures. I decorate simple, mostly natural things like pinecorns, leaves, brown jars, colorful rocks and of course my little critter statues like the squirrels, and fall birds. Worked a bit on cleaning Lillie's pen, which seem to have grown. I stake her out each day so she can keep grass and clover down. Picked lots of nearly ripe tomatoes, and still need to cook the beets I brought in.

So far no rain. But, it is very cloudy. I must be in land enough to be missed. We need to dry out. However, the humidity is very high 100%. Needless to say, no riding. And no drying out. Nice that Kayla could ride and help out. I'm not familiar with the shots. I know my nephew just started his barrel horse on hock and stifle shots. Do you have to do them on a regular bases or do they last for a while. Or is each situation and horse different? I am learning so much from you. Hopefully, Jax won't need them, but learning how and why is a big help to me. Vicki & Big Jax

How long do the injections last for Paige, and just what exactly are they for. Each hock or just one??
We had rain yesterday, nice today, but very chilly early this morning, and I think rain tomorrow. I listen, but sometimes, it goes in one ear and out the other, and forgets to stop inbetween. :)
Still working on cleaning under the lean-to, only take out about 3-4 loads a day. Have to find a new flower bed to make, but thinking about redoing the one around the telephone pole. Too much grass is growing there. So tomorrow will try to dig out some of the plants, and start that bed over. Long day today, my eyes are tired. Dominic is sick now with the flu that Mike had, we went to Phillips to pick up his school work for him. Didn't have much, and brought some food for him but forgot 7-UP, his Dad called a bit ago, said he was still sick.

Hi Marion, Indy & Paige! I hope Kayla was able to come out and ride Paige for a bit, but I guess that depends on just how much weather you got from that hurricane. I'll be going out to see Koot after work tomorrow. I don't know how many more of these week day visits I'll get with the days getting darker earlier. It's starting to get really dark by the time we leave Koot :( Voted. XOXO Danya and Koot

Sending you some rain next, then nice weather for a few days. Mike really enjoyed the trip, in fact barely home, and he says next we are going to Milwaukee. I would have went to the horse sale alone, but Dominic wanted to hunt. He is 14, but his parents do not have a place for him to practice. He surely can not hurt anything going around the hay field or the lawn. Of course Mike does not have to mow that part where the grass is flatten right down.
Dominic is a great kid to have around, because we can "discuss" things, but sometime he sounds like a 30 yr kid. We were practicing his driving skills, lots of room in the hay fields.

Hi Marion, Indy & Paige! Your weather sounds sooo nice! We are having really similar weather right now and it's actually quite refreshing. I'm sure the horses loved the 2.5 hours out :) My husband and I got the shed together Sunday morning. It only too about 1 1/2 hours so really not that bad. I was able to get all of Koot's stuff out of my garage so now everything is where he is :) I put Koot and Maggie together when I got there about 9am and left around 11:30am and they only squealed twice at each other and then everything was okay! I haven't heard anything bad from them since so they seem to be getting along enjoying the space together! Voted. XOXO Danya and Koot

Well, Kevin and Winter are both kinda pitiful just now, huh? A dog and her man, down together, lol. Wishing them both a speedy recovery.
Have you tried the flexion test with Paige? Of course, that's kinda hard to do right by yourself. Hope the injections work for her.
It wasn't much I picked up, no longer than I was there. He teaches his young horses to "pick him up off the fence" and positions them by bumping upwards on the halter until they step towards the fence, and eventually they are positioned perfectly to get on from off the top of a fence (or the mounting block). I haven't tried that one yet. The other thing I hope will help me begin to teach Allie to step around is to flex their head laterally and then swing your hand out 6 inches or so off your hip to encourage a lateral step with the inside front leg. Release the rein as that foot is in the air (in other words, really quick) and praise them. You can use your outside leg lightly if needed. Same cues as usual, just how quiet he was about it, one step, stop, repeat. Back them if they try to walk forward out of it. Gracie knows how to spin, so I was expecting it to be easy, but she kept wanting to walk off after I released her. After a few minutes though, she would step off just the rein. Very low stress exercise, which will be good for Allie. And his one rein stops always include a hindquarter yield of 90- 180 degrees.
Yesterday wasn't much fun around here. Got an email from the algebra teaher that there was unfinished work that would get 0s if not done by mon, so Madison and I spent 3 or 4 hours working, much against her will, on algebra. I got a few little chores done late at feeding time, but was otherwise inside all day. I did find a decent price on west nile/wee/eee vaccines and ordered them.
Well, headed to work today and tomorrow, so I'll probably not be on tuesday. Hope your week gets off to a good start

Wow, from jackets to fans in a week. Us too, up to mid or high 80s the last couple of days, but at least the nights are under 70 now. How is Kevin doing? I'm sure he appreciates your visits. Winter too. Do Winter and Honey get along?
Is Paige moving a little stiff? After the more strenuous season she had, she may need them injected, sure enough.
I've been letting it idle closer to a minute, and then leaving it running when I can instead of turning it off and on. Are there any steps to turning them off?
I did go see Buck in the morning, figured I'd kick myself if I didnt, and I always learn a tidbit from him, even just watching short videos on YouTube. He has a totally different teaching style from the big clinicians in that he doesn't spoon feed you; you've got to watch and listen closely to learn cause he's only gonna show you once. The riders who wanted help got it, the ones who didn't ask for help didn't get it no matter how bad they were falling apart. But that's fair. I picked up a couple new ideas, things to try a little differently, and I got to practice on sweet Gracie bareback in the evening.
Got 2 big round bales bought for the winter, (need 2 or 3 more), trimmed little Cinni, did groundwork with Allie, and my friend came over and cut the risers for the deck stairs. Had a funny thing happen at feeding time: I was hooking the lead rope to Dee's halter when she decided to rub her head on me and somehow, the lead snap wound up snapped on her nostril, lol. Boy, was she surprised by that! In all my years with horses, I've never had that happen.
Well, headed to church. Still loving our "new" pastor and his family. We celebrated their 1st year with us back in august; can't believe it's been that long. Anyway, hope you have a great sunday.

I am afraid that I did not get to go to the Neilsville Horse Sale, The Banker left me enough money to the Church collection box, and he left me Dominic as my baby sitter. He knew Dominic did not want to go, because today is the 1st day of bow hunting season. But I did enjoy the day with Dominic.
Yesterday I had to check out Dominic deer stand, to make sure it was safe for him. Today he was down, and helped him feed deer, and of course just wondered around in the woods for a long while.
It was funny this afternoon, I ask him why he never wants to drive the truck, and he said something, like, GrPa keeps telling me everything I did wrong. So, I said, he's not here, just go drive around the lawn and back yard, well, 30 minutes later he is still driving around and acting like he was having alot of fun. Lawn has some well traveled circles on it. He even was backing up very straight, and going good around the backyard where there are lots of flower beds. I am usually the one who has to teach them to nerve racking for his parents and Mike.

Okay, glow it but not too long, then sit and idle. This is complicated, lol. I took it up to the insurance company yesterday so they could see it, which they wanted to do before they'd put full coverage on it. I feel better driving it now that it has more than just liability on it.
Glad you had drier weather and could take a real walk with Honey. She was probably wondering what was up with the short walks. Paige looked so pretty in her FB pics the other day. Is she still working good for you? Thats so funny that they won't poop outside. Only in a clean stall, Mom.
I got the shingles replaced, and let me tell you, I did NOT enjoy the experience! Most of the ones that broke off were from the overhang and they put several layers of shingles on that part, for some reason. I'm probably not going to repair those since I really need a new roof up there in the next year or two anyway.
Yes, I'll totally need help getting the other roof back on. It came off in 1 piece and is pretty much intact except for one strip of tin. It'll take many hands to get it back on, but I have to replace the rafters first; they're pretty rotten and is probably why the roof blew off.
Still trying to make up my mind about going to see Buck Brannaman. I've been waiting for him to come back to this area for several years, but I can only see part of today and he's here for 3 days, so not sure how much I'll learn.
Well, hope your saturday is a good one.

So you have a new "best friend" named Winter. Glad to hear Kevin is doing a bit better.
Mike is finally feeling better, went to another funeral today, feel sorry for his brother who lived in Milwaukee, (5-6) hour drive one way, who was up here at his son's cabin on Labor Day 4th, had to come back up for funeral last Friday, then back up here for this one.
Tomorrow Mike is going with Mikey and Jennifer to northern Michigan beautiful fall colors are nearly here, and will be a bit more closer to the lake. Traveling up to Munsing, right on the lake, and then coming home Sunday threw Powers where his sister lives. They have been planning this trip since they went last fall. I want to go to the Neilsvilles horse sale on Saturday, it is a 3 1/2 day event, but I know I should not go. Usually Mike goes along, so he can see the High Grounds, which is a VA memorial to all the wars, it is so neat to see. Look it up on the computer, but so much better to see it in person, it has such a weird sounds with the wind charms.
Another busy day. Friday vote for you, and hope your weekend is wonderful....that means being spent with your horse.

So you literally let it glow a few minutes if it's freezing temps or less? Wow. Drove it yesterday and glowed it to start, much better start that way. Glad you told me. I totally misunderstood what Ken said about that.
I gave my ancient f150 to the guy that picks up our trash and he came and got it yesterday. He knows how to tinker with engines and I don't think he has a vehicle at all, so I hope he gets some good use out if it. It actually was cranking and running pretty good for its age.
Yep, the barn life will put joints to hard use, that's for sure. But I think sitting around would freeze them up too and of course, be less healthy and definitely less fun. Hope the new Synvisc injections really help out.
Wow, Kevin is upright-ish and walking? And home! Happy for him. Sounds like Ms Winter enjoyed her time with you, and was maybe a little upset with him for being gone so longlol.
Hope you have better weather today. Ours has been nice, back up to the 80s. I finally got the shed door back on yesterday. What should've only taken 2 hours tops took 2 days (got the wrong hinges, so busy with other stuff, had to peel back the aluminum skin on the door, etc), but it's finally done. Hope to get around to the shingles on the barn today. The roof on the pasture shelter is gonna be the doozy. The horses are fine. Winter coats are just long enough to give them a deeper color and feel soft, but not shaggy yet. Boo-boos still need some attention but are granulated in, just need to regrow skin.
Well, hope you have a great friday. Take care.

Hi Marion, Indy & Paige! Koot really seems to be happy and settled now. He'll whinny when I get there most of the time or if he notices me walking away before he's gotten his treats after a ride or turn out haha. I don't have them sharing the same space yet, but hoping we can do that soon - maybe I'll bring it up this weekend. We are putting the shed up which means I'll be hanging around the barn for awhile this weekend so might be a good time to try it out. All of Koot's stuff has been in my garage since he moved. He just has his halter over there right now. I actually brought his bridle over last night and rode him to the turnout and back which was nice. I felt comfortable enough that he's settled and would be okay for a little ride. I'll just be happy to have all his stuff there! Voted. XOXO Danya and Koot

Brake line broke on the car, when we came home from the funeral the other day. Just got it back tonight, because the other side needed fixing too. Not a regular garage/repair shop, because he works at a factory too. But he is a good guy, I always bring him some fresh eggs too. Yesterday, I did not even get on HC, by the time I turned the computer on it was time to go to bed.

I feel like a little kid, who wants to still play outside long after dark. Been so nice these last few days, I take back all the "nasty" things I said about Mother Nature. Been picking apples from drying for the winter for horses, washing jars for making apple jelly, (figured I would wait until a rainy day to do it), still working on cleaning under the lean-to and hauling it to the flower bed I am making. Been finding lots of baby trees in the woods, so they begged me to take them home, and replant them....I swear I can hear them calling me, maybe the wood fairies!! Went to a garage sale today, lots of horse tack, like I needed more, but did get a few nice deals. Spent my allowance for the rest of the year. Moved the guinea pigs outside a few days ago, so they can enjoy the breeze and fresh air. Lots easier to clean the cages everyday too, the plastic bottom ones, I have to wash and dry them. Once they have to stay inside again, will use woodchips for them. Sadie and the kitten, Precious, and very much interested in them. Sadie will not hurt them, but Precious is such a naughty little girl. Grizzly and Smokey don't even bother them outside.

Thanks, that makes sense. He showed me the curly que but I thought he meant don't drive off till that light goes out, but maybe he meant don't crank it till that light goes out. I shall ammend my ways. Took the car to do some stop and go errands yesterday and saw a million and one deisels out and about, made me miss mine. I tried to bounce up into the Camrey like you do a truck and it just doesn't work, lol.
They finally got the line fixed yesterday, well temporarily anyway. They still have to set a new pole at the neighbors. I'm sure they were excited to have power again, it had been just shy of 48 hours without. Every time the wind blew, the tree would sizzle and smoke, so I'm glad they fixed it.
Glad Kevin is doing better (?) and hope he comes home soon.
Hope your knees do better too. Seems like the Synvisc should last longer? Is there a limit to how often you can have it?
I'm dying to ride, but I'm so covered up with chores, continuing ed for work, repairs from Irma, I may never see a saddle again. Ok, that's an exaggeration, but it feels like it. Grrrrr. Maybe if I drive the truck more often to make up for it, lol.

So glad the kids were able to get outside for a 3 hour graze. Must've been beautiful weather. You know they enjoyed that, and I know you enjoyed watching them.
How is Kevin doing? Glad you're able to help with his dog. Why does she have sutures? You probably said, but I don't remember.
No, didn't say anything about glowing it. What's that? I went to move it away from a tree when I got home monday night and it took 2 tries to crank it.
What was left of Irma came through Monday. My neighbor, who's a pilot, said the sustained winds were in the 40s with gusts up to 60. I can believe it, I've never personally heard the wind sound like that before. I can't even imagine what 100 mph or 185 mph winds would be like, as poor Puerto Rico, islands, and Fla experienced! Lost quite a few shingles off the barn, the roof off the horses' shelter, and the door off a storage shed. The neighbor's power pole got taken down by a tree, so they've been without power since Monday night and it still isn't on. The power lines are stretched downward through one of my trees and it's been sizzling and smoking ever since. I spent a lot of yesterday watching it in case it broke out into flames (I know not to touch or spray water on it). Fortunately, God's protected us and the tree seems to have been burned away from the wires and isn't smoking as much. So that's our excitement going on. I have a ton of work to do to repair this and that, but grateful that the animals, house, and ourselves are all okay.
Well, hope you have a great wed. Take care.

As most of you know by now, my husband had a heart attack yesterday and was Careflighted to Harris Ft. Worth where he underwent a quadruple bypass. He had been having chest pains all night, but thought it was indigestion, and insisted Monday AM I drive him to the ER. Got about 4 miles down the road, looked at him, stopped and called 911 and returned home. The Drs. are pleased with his progress, although he was very groggy today (due to the morphine). So very scary. When the Dr allows, I will beat him for not waking me up and tell me what was going on. Classic HA symptoms!

Today you can get your vote and a smile, before you get back from your's and Honey's walk. I bet she loves going. Mike does not feel good, so I am in and out since before 6 this morning, to check on him. Cleaning once again under the lean to, and then work on the chicken run. That area is does not even need cleaning, but I wanted more stuff for the flower bed. The new bed is only about 12 x 10, sort of small. Trying to connect 3 smaller beds to make one giant one, so Mike doesn't mower there...well complain about mowing there.

Come visit me, Mistic, Willow & Whisper.

Well I am getting on HC, before the "bewitching hour" today, but not by much. Hope all your families and friends are safe from Irma terrible wind and rain. Such a Witch she was.

Not really sure the mama guinea hens "snuck" those extra eggs, but I marked all the ones I gave her with a big X. Cleaned guinea pig cages today, tomorrow, will put them in a rabbit cage, since the plastic ones just do not seem to work as well. And it will be nice outside, so Ghost and Chewy can see what the real world is like. Started cleaning out chicken run today, 4 wheelbarrows full, but most of this stuff is light, just mixture of dry straw, sand, and of course left over feathers, with no chickens attached. Just more filling for the latest flower bed. It's right next to the rabbit cage, so Velvet thinks I need to bring her a handful of grass or a apple each time I dump the wheelbarrow. She said she is a growing girl, which she is, a Giant Flemmish. Cleaned out the little room, inside the chicken coop too, mostly sand and dried lawn clippings, plan on putting up roost and feeders next.....I sister has too many doves, and is giving me 2 babies or young ones. It will also be home for any young chicks because there is a heat lamp all set up already. I must have done something inside today, oh, yes, I moved the table over a bit so Mike could work on the pellet stove....ha ha, well that was work. I did make supper, lunch and breakfast too for him. and I will get at dishes tomorrow morning before he gets up. I think!!

Come visit me, Mistic, Willow & Whisper.

Hi Marion, Indy & Paige! How nice of you to help him out with Winter. I'm sure he really appreciated it :) I hope you had a nice weekend. I was actually away Friday-Sunday so I didn't get any Koot time, but I'll be going out there on Weds to see him. Voted. XOXO Danya and Koot

Come visit me, Kootenai *Thanks for Sept HOTM!*.

Hi & a vote,
About the only thing I managed to accomplish this weekend was giving Blue a bath and clipping his nails, which he hates. Now he is ready to start Trick training class tomorrow. He is fluffy for now at least! My sister and niece were safe through Irma in Central FL, they only had some damage, like the gate broke off and debris is the yard. Lucky!

Come visit me, Rocky (the blue-eyed wonder horse), Comet (has new home) & Cowboy (Thanks for HOTD 1/19/2017!).

Sending prayers to all the people in Florida. How is that awful storm effecting your area?? Moved the baby guineas in the house out to the shed. They are just out growing everything. Been staking Lilly out so she can eat my clover patch which was getting too long. I keep it just for the rabbits and now the 2 guinea pigs, yep, suck the 2 of them in. Both are males about 1-1 1/2 old, one solid white with gray ears, and the other is white brown and black is name is Chewy. Other one is Ghost, only because I can not remember what she said. She is going to school and could not take them with her, so Dominic told her I would take them, and he must have been right.

Scott was doing some stuff on the roof of the carport today, and that didn't bother Sunset either. Going to be busy tomorrow, have GOT to make a WalMart run, haven't been there in months. Plus hoping to ride Lilly. Praying for all of those in Fla.

Come visit me, Mystic, Cisco, Angel Meg, Bo (RIP) and Jazz & Angel Nugget.
