How We Met
One of my mom's coworkers knew a lady with a horse for sale. Rye Leigh was 2 years old and younger than what we wanted but I always wanted a horse to train myself. Rye Leigh had never had someone on her back so it was my chance to make a horse the way I wanted it. Also we saved her from going to a breeding facility. We went through months of her doing alright but not 100% focus/understan- ding, me losing my patience,2 leg injuries (one were not sure how it happened, and the other one happened while getting caught in an electric fence). I really wanted to sell her but everyone kept telling me you can do this, keep trying. Once Rye Leigh was healed from her back to back injuries I had to start from the ground up again. I spent a lot of 1 on 1 time with her and gained more patience. When I started seeing big time results I realized she and I were meant for each other, we are best friends..

Thanks so much for your vote...it was such a wonderful surprise to see Luna had been voted HOTD...and she wasn't even running for it! I gave her extra carrots, of course. I went riding yesterday, but afterwards I tried something I saw in a YouTube video. I started teaching her to "shake hands" (or hoofs? LOL). She started getting the idea of what I want after about 15 minutes. She doesn't offer up a hoof on command yet, but she started lifting her hoof towards me (instead of backwards, as if I was going to clean the hoof)and letting me hold it as long as I like. So that's progress, and today I will repeat until she gets it. It's just a stupid trick, but it's fun!
It's getting real cold around here now, but that won't keep me away from Luna. Have a horsey day! Voted.

I love your story of how you met Rye Leigh. It is so true that patience is everything with horses. The "slow way" is the only way to make a great horse, and it sounds like you and her are doing well together. Have you actually had a chance to mount her yet?
