Few things about Whiskey: The 1st few times I rode Whiskey my arms were wore out and tired. I was thinking “man what in the world”. He did not and could not Neck rein. He was very hard in the mouth, no flex in his neck but Karla & Tim told me he needed that kind of work. Tim felt he didn’t ride him in collection and so on. He was Tim’s first horse. We would get under the canopy of the trees on the trails and he would do great with my seat aids which I was happy about. That is how I ride him, with my seat and leg aids. I guess we all are supposed to do that RIGHT!!!! I then started planning my next few months of teaching him to neck rein. I just went back to the beginning and put him in an “O” ring snaffle and took it from there. Every day his personality would shine and he entertained Cliff & me with his antics! Thank you for your support we appreciate it!

Here is a vote from Fatima.
Good evening and thank you so much for voting me HOTD. School began 3 hours late because of the icy weather we had last night, so we peeked into HorseChannel before leaving for school. We were surprised to see me in the spotlight this morning. I am happy in my new home. I just wish that Fancy would not be so bossy. Sometimes she is nice though. We get treats and attention here. It has been a long time since I had a lot of grain. I love my grain. I even try to eat with Fancy in her bowl. She let me get a morsel and then she chases me away. Trigger is hardly ever mean. But he takes Fancy's side when things get touchy.
Well, I just wanted to leave a blog to say thank you for all the kind blogs and friendship. HorseChannel sure is a great place!
Have a great night

Good Morning, we left a thank you vote. Dr. Cook left the next day for a veterinary conference in California, but he asked Dr. McGurrin to call him after seeing Mackie. I told Mackie that we were going to get some answers these people were the BEST of the BEST, surely they could help us. My friend, Jack trailered us and Mackie did super. We were met by Dr. McGurrin and her team. The first thing they did after taking a very complete history, was to attach probes and set up an ECG, as the printout started, Dr. McGurrin asked one of her team to tell her what it showed, he hesitated but finally said, "it shows that this horse is in heart failure". I felt my knees buckle, someone grabbed me and Dr. McGurrin handed me a box of tissue, she said, "you are going to hear lots of talk today, please try to be calm, when I have gathered all my information we will sit down and discuss it together" There were lots more tests. With all of the poking, probing and tests Mackie remained relaxed and calm. We took him back to a stall and went to discuss his case. Dr. McGurrin explained that typically horses do not show signs of heart condition, particularly racehorses, that is why you hear the horror stories about them dropping dead at the track. She felt in Mackie's case this was a very long standing problem, and eventually his heart just got to the point where it could no longer keep up. She wanted to assure me and of course, Dr. Cook that we did not miss anything, they just don't give any indication until it is often too late. She said sometimes drugs help, but in Mackie's advanced case she did not recommend it. I asked if she was prepared to help us that day, she said yes, I agreed to let him go as long as she allowed me to stay with him. She asked if I needed a bit of time with him first, when we were alone I explained to him that it was time, that I would be there and to please trust me one last time. I held him, I stroked his neck and told him how very loved he was, my face and my voice where the last he saw and heard. Sure ruined my make up that day, the ride home was terrible, Jack kept saying "let it out kid" I did...Dr. Cook was on the answering machine when I got home telling me how sorry he was and that he was glad Jack was with me, I did the right thing. Dr. MGurrin sent me a copy of the autopsy along with Mackie's halter a lovely braid of his tail and a plaster imprint of his hoof with his name. She said she removed and preserved his heart, she uses it for teaching purposes. I get great comfort from that. I learned 2 things that day, 1. Mackie never gave up, his heart did, 2. it is just a body, his spirit lives on, this is for you Mackie, I love you, we will meet again. If you feel like you know Mackie, then this month has been a success, thanks to all who supported us, special thanks to the dogs that came by every day to vote, Love Donna Lee & Mackie

Hi, I had to be at work for 4:15AM, then I had physio after work, sorry I'm late. We left a vote for you. I hope I can get thru these last two days. Things were going well for us, but on August 2/2007 as I was calling the guys in for supper, Mackie laid down just as he approached the gate, not that odd, the strange part was it took him a really long time to get up and with a struggle, it was like slow motion, hard to describe but strange. He looked absolutely exhausted, he had no temp, breathing was regular, he was E, D, P, P, but something just was not right, I went with my gut and I called Dr. Cook. He came the next day and after a very long thorough exam he asked me to put on my "serious hat", he said Mackie needed to be seen by a specialist at the Equine Hospital, a Cardiologist. I said, make the appointment, I'll arrange trailering, Thanks so much for standing by us thru the month. Your support means so much to me. Love Donna Lee & Mackie

Good Morning, I'm so off routine, we had to start work at 5AM yesterday and again Monday, they don't realize that this cuts into my HC time... We left a windy Canadian vote. I did the usual things for the stumbling without much success, but remember it was sporadic, one day while jumping a small course of xrails, Mackie just lost it before the jump and he fell down. Clearly he was upset and the way he looked at me was like, WHAT HAPPENED?? I was not hurt and he looked OK, that was when Dr. Cook came to evaluate. First thing he said was, "you don't want navicular..." after his exam he said he was drawing blood to test for EPM, my heart sank and I said NO, HE HAS NAVICLULAR. I had read a bit about EPM, and I did not want that. I won't go into detail, google it and you will see. It is a neurological disease with some fairly nasty consequences. So, I waited for the blood work to come back. Enjoy your day, Love Donna Lee & Mackie

Thanks to everyone that voted us HOTD, we are so excited, we are getting close to the end of the month, I still have lots of story to tell. We left you a vote this afternoon. When things started to go wrong, at first I didn't know what the issue was, mostly because it was not consistent, some days everything was great but other times it was like Mackie had two left front feet. I can't describe it any other way, he stumbled quite a bit, I know lots of horses stumble on occasion, but remember, I knew this horse, and this was not just a stumble. We had his farrier check him, we checked saddle fit, we looked at teeth, we had corrective shoeing done to help with breakover. The strange thing was it was not all the time, I lunged him and tried to see it, it was like he didn't know where to put his feet. Years earlier Dr. Cook gave me a book entitled Lameness in Horses, he has since lived to regret that....I read that book everyday, and when it got to where I felt we needed Dr. Cooks expertise, I called him and said "can you come and look at Mackie? I think he has navicular" Talk soon, Love Donna Lee

We left a thank you vote, I have been getting up at 2:30 in the morning to get my blog written and do some votes, I am so happy to tell Mackie's story. Interesting fact the Magnificent Albatross, the greatest Sandardbred of all time, was Sterly's grandsire, he was also Mackie's grandsire. Mackie came from a pretty good racing background here is a little info on his Sire. Cam Luck
Camluck was an awesome member of Canadian trainer Robert McIntosh’s “Dream Team”of pacers, which included champions Artsplace and Staying Together. His fame, however, came not only from his accomplishments as a racehorse, which saw him win over $1 million and 26 races, but as one of the most prolific stallions to ever stand at stud in Canada. His first nine crops old enough to race had accumulated more than $100 million and include 322 offspring with records of 1:55 or faster and ten millionaires. Hi River, we need your vote, please
Daily vote for for all, Prayers for Susan & Peekaboo
As you know most Standardbreds come off the track due to injury, that doesn't mean that they are finished, many go on to have great careers as trail horses, companion horses, Western or, English, basically they can do what any horse can do. So my search continued, because of the amount of riding I like to do and because I wanted to do some jumping I was pretty careful about the injury's, so any hock or suspensory stuff was out. I looked a quite a few and also during that time I was screening prospective buyers for Bray. That needed to be the right person for sure. Actually Audra, horse shopping is the only kind of shopping I like. Tomorrow we meet Mackie. Thanks for supporting my Angel Sassy Mac, Love you all, Donna Lee & Mackie

We left a frosty vote, now that I had started my search for another horse, remember I said I was stubborn, I wanted another Standardbred,I want to share this funny story about one I went to look at, I talked to his owner several times, she knew what I wanted and she told me about her gelding that was not a good race horse, he was 8 years old about 15.3 and I wanted to see him, his name was "Count Broccoli" Standardbreds sometimes have funny names, they called him Brock, his Mom thought that because Donna Lee and Count Broccoli rhymed that we were likely a good pair, that should have been my first clue to not was about 2 1/2 hours away so I took 2 friends, Sonya and another friend that was 8 months pregnant. We finally found the place way back in the boonies and all I can say is OMG. I would have taken him just to get him out of there, what a dump....and poor Count Broccoli, from first glance we knew he was full of parasites, and he was a rack of bones. I did not want to offend anyone so I asked if there was anyone available to ride him before I rode him, her neighbor got on him and she rode him until he dumped her. I watched and he had a strange gait and he kept wanting to drop his right shoulder, I suspected an injury, my friends said don't ride him, but I came all that way and I did not want to appear rude, so I rode him, I kept his head up especially at a corner, and I made it very short. I thanked her for her time and said I would think about him. My pregnant friend had to pee soooo bad, but she said, please lets just get out of here, the place was so bad she would not even use the bathroom....I often wondered what happened to Count Broccoli, more tomorrow, Love Donna Lee, thanks for helping Angel Sassy Mac, it means so much to us.

Good Morning, I'm all off schedule this morning, I hate that.... we had torrential rain and heavy wind warnings overnight. This morning I couldn't get in the barn, we have 2 large sliding doors, one faces south, one faces west. Last night I latched the south door from the inside because of the wind, I went in and out the west door, but this morning the wind was from the west and there was no way I could slide the door open, I had to wait for David to get up, have coffee and go out with me to open it. The rain has stopped, sky look pretty clear, but still major wind, we are all staying in. Talk soon, have a great weekend, Love Donna Lee

GOOD MORNING ALL, LEFT YOU A VOTE. Today's story is my personal favorite, here it is. Lessons were going well, we were becoming quite comfortable with one another, she loved her trot poles and her friend Doolie. She was learning to flex and bend but our canter was pretty rough. Sterl would anticipate my asking and she would throw herself into it off her front, not pretty. Our instructor said if we start her on some small jumps it will help her learn to use her hind end. Sterl was already a bit of a "wonder horse" around the barn. Lots of the other riders would chuckle "you can't ride a Standardbred" We practiced our two point, our release on the flat then, when we were ready we planned to jump next lesson. Word spread thru the barn like wildfire "she is going to jump that horse, Standardbred's can't jump" So, here we are next lesson, Val has a couple of TINY xrails set up, Sonya and Doolie were there, I was as nervous as can be. We do our warm up, get sort of relaxed, just then I notice that quite a crowd has gathered at the rail. They are all there to see a Standardbred jump. I trot around the arena, line up, get in two point, get ready for my release,PANIC..I turn my head to the right and CLOSE MY EYES... when I opened them we were on the other side of the jump, STERLY DID IT, Standardbred's can jump. LOVE THAT GIRL, talk tomorrow, thanks for the votes, LOVE DONNA LEE & STERLY GIRLY

So, now Sterl May is safely at the boarding barn, life is good. I HAVE MY OWN HORSE, I had to tell you all about Sonya because I never would have made it thru the training and frustration without her. It did not take long to see that Sterly knew NOTHING about being ridden, she had had someone on her back a handful of times, but trained she wasn't. She had no bend, no flexibility, she had no idea what aids were, her head was straight up and out, when she was confused which was often, she paced. That was her comfort zone. But, none of that mattered to me, she was mine, we would learn together. As lucky as I was to have Sonya, Sterly was lucky to have Doolie(Sonya's horse) his stall was across the aisle from her. And of course, when I rode, especially at first Sonya was always there. Sterly had this huge crush on Doolie and once in the arena, she would follow him anywhere. I kept Fool Kat for those times when nothing went right and I just wanted to ride and noT really work SO HARD at it. We started lessons with Sonya's coach, in the beginning it wasn't pretty, but like I said, we were both learning together. TO BE CONTINUED, Left a vote, thanks for yours, talk soon, Love Donna Lee & STERLY GIRLY
