Continued history of the Canadian horse:

The Canadian breed became renowned for its abilities as a roadster, racer and stylish harness horse. By 1820, classes for Canadian Horses were being held at agricultural exhibitions in Lower Canada and in New York. Over the next decades, increasing numbers of Canadian horses, including the best stallions, were sold to the United States. Many found their way into the foundation stock of other breeds such as the Morgan, Tennessee Walker, American Saddlebred and Standardbred.
With the outbreak of the U.S. Civil War in 1861, Canadian Horses once again were used for miltary service when thousands were exported to supply the Union Army. By the end of the war in 1865, at least 30,000 Canadian Horses had been exported for military service.
Later, in 1874, Canadian Horses took part in the historic North West Mounted Police Great March West, in the Northwest Rebellion of 1885 and are even said to have served in the Battle of the Little Bighorn. Canadian Horses sent to serve in the Boer War in South Africa did so well that hundreds were subsequently purchased for the British Imperial forces and shipped overseas. During World War I, more Canadian Horses were shipped off to battle in France, never to return.
Ironically, the popularity and availability of the Canadian Horse almost caused its demise as a distinct breed.

Yesterday I rode Misty and ponied Sierra. They both did pretty good, considering I dont do it with them very often. Sometimes Sierra tends to get a bit rowdy when I am ponying her, but yesterday she was very well behaved. It is still pretty chilly out but at least the wind has died down.

Question of the day: If you were looking to buy another horse, would you rather buy a foal and train it from the begining, or buy a full grown horse that isnt trained quite the way you would like it to be?

Have a great weekend everyone and tommorow I will be blogging on Morgans!

History of the Canadian horse:The Threats to the Breed

The advent of mechanization during the mid 1900s nearly marked the end of the Canadian Horse breed. After the second world war, the Canadian Horse population steadily dropped until it hit crisis proportions in the 1970s. Less than 5 registrations per year were being recorded from1970 - 1974, and the number of horses had dropped to an estimated 400.
During the late 1970s a few influential breeders recognized the plight of the breed, and slowly started acquiring quality animals, setting up breeding programs, and once again began promoting the breed and its wonderful qualities.
By the early to mid 1990s, the breed finally began to look like it was on its way back to recovery. The numbers were up to about 2500 - 3000 live animals worldwide and the status was changed from "critical" to "rare" by the American Livestock Conservancy.
With its increase in popularity during the early 2000s, unfortunately, just as has happened to so many other breeds, pressure began to be placed on the Canadian Horse to change from the traditional breed type, in order to suit the show ring and to meet perceived market trends.

Wow, its hard to believe that October is half over already. I didnt do very much with the horse yesterday, because it was cold windy and misty.

Question of the day: What is your least favorite horse related chore?

My least favorite chore is probably watering Sierra and Misty because their pasture is too for away to water them with a hose and I dont have automatic waterers, so I have to haul 5 gallon jugs of water to them with the tracter, and it really gets to be a drag sometimes.

Thanks so much to everyone that is voting for Dakota, your vote is appreciated!
I hope you are all having a good fall!

I dont compete I just ride for fun. I am not sure how my horses would behave at a show with so many other horses around but I would like to go to a show at least once in my lifetime. What about you, do you compete at all?

BREED HISTORY OF THE CANADIAN HORSE(REQUESTED BY HARDWIN)
The Canadian Horse is a little known national treasure of Canada. This hardy breed descended from horses originally sent to the “New World” by King Louis XIV of France in the late 1600’s. These Norman and Breton horses were felt to be of Arab, Andalusian and Barb ancestry – traits of which can still be recognized in the Canadian Horse today.
For hundreds of years, the French horses bred with little influence from outside breeds. They eventually developed into their own distinct breed - the Canadian Horse or Cheval Canadien. Because they evolved under the adverse conditions of harsh weather, scarce food, and hard work, the Canadian Horse remains the sturdiest and most acclimatized horse in Canada today. They are tough, strong horses, tolerant of inclement weather conditions, and are extremely “easy keepers”. Because of these traits, the Canadian Horse is often referred to as “The Little Iron Horse”.

Wow has it ever warmed up around here! Yesterday we had upper 70s but I dont think it is going to last very long. Yesterday some people came over to my aunts place to help her with some yard work( my aunt lives a very short distance from us). They had a couple kids that wanted pony rides so I brought Dakota over for them to ride and thay had a lot of fun.

Question of the day: Wich of the following is your horse most likely to spook at?
A. A loud vehicle passing nearby.
B. A vehicle moving in the far distance.
C. A plastic bag flapping in the wind.
D. A rustling noise coming from tall grass.

My HC pals are awesome and I hope you have a great day!

Well, I am probably not the best person to ask, but I have had a little experiance with a horse that charges. After my horse Misty had her foal, she got very aggresive and would charge me( she was pretty aggresive even before she had her foal). My reaction would always be to get behind something so that she couldnt hurt me, but that is the wrong thing to do.I eventually learned to stand my ground, and now she never charges or bites anyone anymore. It sounds like Moe has been through a lot and it is awesome that you have rescued him from his abusive owner. Just curious, is the horse in the background of your profile picture yours also?

Voted for ya!
Yesterday my little brother Ethan and I went riding together and we had a lot of fun. It has been such a long time since anyone has gone riding with me, so it was nice to have some company. I rode Misty and Ethan rode Dakota. We went for a pretty long ride, got to gallop up some hills and chase in a few calves. It has finally warmed up and yesterday was a perfect day for riding.

Question of the day: Do any of your siblings/parents like to go riding with you?

Except for Ethan, none of my siblings like to ride with me, or at all for that matter.
My mom has never been on a horse in her life( boy she doesn't know what she is missing out on) and my dad isn't much interested in horses.

Have a great day and tommorow I will have some breed info on Canadian horses for ya!
Thanks so much for all the support!

Well when I got Dakota, he had been in training for a month, so he was basically saddle broke, but he was very green. I was also pretty green, so things didnt get of to a very good start, in fact the very first time I rode him he bucked me off. But that was about 4 years ago and now he is a very good pony. Now and then when he is feeling spunky he might buck a little, but never anything serious and he is a very good kids pony. I would love to here about Moe's past!
