My Horse's Favorite Things To Do: Investigate anything she can get into. Follow and bother her horsey family: Pictures of Zuni's family are included in Zuni's collection 1st is **Shaliko Palus-grey reg. Half-Arabian mare 16 yrs old (born at Auburn University-owne- d her since she was 4 months old).
2nd **Arikara- Zuni's half brother is AQHA bay 15 yr old stallion, he was born on our place.

How We Met
We arrived at the pasture to find what we thought was a German Shepherd at the round bale with the old mares. We approached and found it was a baby horse! My brother in laws mare,Chelsea age 22, was exposed for about one afternoon to a stud who had gotten loose. Chelsea and her pasture mate were both fat, but we all thought it was due to the lush pasture. I was given the baby now know as Zuni, for my birthday..

GOOD MORNING, LEFT A THANK YOU VOTE, So, let's get right to it. On routine exam all her vitals where good, she, of course appeared healthy, she had regular vacs, wormings and her teeth were good. We drew blood for a complete work up, all neg, with nothing obvious we started the slow process of ruling out, one by one the possibilities. I mean slow because in order to not get confused we needed to give each treatment time to test effects, does that make sense?? Being a Mare, almost 15 and never bred, we wanted to rule out ovary issues first, I was happy and relived when the physical exam and the internal ultrasound was negative, we then went at the simple stuff like corrective shoeing, we tried a course of Regumate and a series of Prostoglandn injection, we tested for neurological issues, we looked at eye issues, double checked teeth and throat, there was no obvious tenderness in her back muscles, however she lounged better than under saddle. Thru all the testing, which took weeks, I still rode her and acted like everything was fine. When Dr. Cook was satisfied that we had ruled out EVERYTHING, he said he needed some very accurate xrays of her spine, he needed us to go to the Equine Hospital in Guelph. He called to make her appointment and I asked Val(our coach) to trailer us up there, and on Jan 15/98 in on of the worst snow storms ever off we went. TO BE CONTINUED. I read you had a shot in your shoulder. I had one a few years ago and I did not go back. Now when my shoulder bothers me, I try my best to back off on the work load. I know about that. I planned on working with Fancy today, but the rains came in. She has shed her winter duds and she is slick and shinny. I guess I will get new photos after she has a bath. Trigger is slick and shinny too.
Mother's day the neighborhood kids came to visit Fancy and Trigger. The children gave them treats and pulled grass. Trigger is still quite aloof. I wonder if anyone ever gave him treats before we got him. He acts like they just rode him hard and put him up wet. Once you catch him, he is so sweet though.

Hi Zuni, here's a vote for ya. Good luck at the show! Hope you bring home some blues! Oh yeah, those deep deltoid muscle arm shots hurt like heck! And the more you get the shots and it gets in your system, the worse you are going to feel! Sorry, just giving you a heads up! Yep, machine went nuts on me back in Jan, then in 3 or 4 days it started to run again. Steve got it up and running today, and when we get a nice weekend and my Kevin is home, we'll dig out dad's machine and see if it's okay and didn't dry rot out on the seals and belts. It was only a year old, dad got it 2008 and he passed in 2009, so it didn't see much use. Well I got my ride in on Paige and a couple of outside things done before the rains came in! And from the looks of the weather reports, right straight thru till next weekend! HUH! But my ride was great on Paige. Then I went to a BBQ for a little while, came home and spread some Magnesium chorlide flakes in the indoor arena to keep the dust down. Haven't put any down in a year now, it needed it. Just used 100 pounds for now on the really dry dusty areas. To wet and crummy out to turn the show kids out! Hot house flowers they are. So gave them lunch of a couple of flakes of hay, they were happy about that! Easy to please! LOL! Love ya, Marion and the blondies. Come visit me, Nuttin But Good. ♥♡♥ Yep, grey skies changed my plans yesterday morning! I did spring cleaning till nearly 12:00! I ate lunch, and then brushed Deacon and Rocket-fly sprayed and turned them out. I got Whiskey next and bathed him! He looked so pretty...after that I was tired, plum pooped!! So I relaxed and watched them graze. It will be a few days before I can ride around my home area due to the rains! Come visit me, ♥ Whiskey ♥ & ♥ Deacon ♥.

GOOD MORNING, LEFT VOTES FOR ALL, TO THANK YOU FOR YOURS. This is where Sterly's story takes a bit of a twist. FF almost 4 years, we are still at the boarding barn, Sonya is now in University, I still ride 4x a week. I started to notice a slight hesitation from Sterl that was new, she did not want to go forward, at first it was mild, and I could push her thru it, but it got worse. She would actually do a small buck and a very tiny rear when I asked for forward. This was so out of character for her, but ever her resistance was polite, like she was trying to get my attention, she did. Believe me when I say there were lots of suggestion from folks that observed us, most thought that it was behavior and that I was not strong enough and I was letting her get away with it, one woman told me I had to beat her hard enough to make a welt on her skin, that would smarten her up!!!. GOOD MORNING MY FRIENDS,I would like to continue with Sterl May's story, thanks for reading them and commenting on them, because she is 30 and retired, it is also fun for me to remember the early years. THANKS FOR THE VOTES AND SUPPORT. All was well at the barn, Sterly's retraining was in full swing, I still leased Fool Kat, so I was a pretty busy girl, 2 horses to ride 4x a week and the barn was 40 minutes from home, a full time job, a house and husband to take care of plus 4 cats and a dog(Nicky) that I did agility with. The young couple that owned Fool Kat were pregnant and building a new house, they had no time for her but, did not want to let her go. So I was a perfect solution for them. Unfortunately, the baby arrived and the house was ready and they were ready to take her home. I had leased her for almost 2 years, I had Sterly but still it was a sad good by. Fool Kat was 23 when I started her lease, I kept in touch after they moved her home, she was basically a pet, she died quietly at 32. Had some Sadie time today. We both need it everyday. It's getting hot here, so I didn't ride. I put the halter on her and walked her off the property. She was a little nervous, so we took it slow, stopping when she needed to to look around and see that she was okay. Neighborhood dogs were barking at us. She walked a little fast on the way back to the house. Had to keep stopping her to slow her down. She loved it. Going to walk her more often to get her use going off the property. Going to work up to riding her. Last time I rode her off the property, she was nervous and wanted to fight me. She should trust me more now. Hugs and a vote. Hi Zuni, here's a vote for ya. AWH GEEZ! Rabies shots are not fun at all! Take it from me. Had to go through them late Aug in 2011. Still paying that hospital bill off! Expensive as heck also. You're maybe going to feel really tired, feverish and won't want to eat! It was three weeks of heck. And the last shot, they went really deep in the deltoid muscle and hit bone, I couldn't move my right arm up in the air for 2 months. I was mad, but I was alive. Sorry you are having to go through this! Had a really good ride on Paige today. Needed it, started the day off with my washing machine taking a dump on me. I think this time it's a gonner! It's almost 35 years old, what'a ya think? Of course it was full of laundry and water, had to try and hand ring things out, bring them upstairs and handwash in the kitchen sink. Not my idea of fun! i rode buttercup. worked on walk/canter transitions. she gave one buck then worked out of it. my little rider fell off into a manure pile when smooch spooked! i felt bad for her because i usually drag the arena since the horses spend most of their day out there. didn't have time though. she was a good sport about it anyway. COME VISIT ANKA’S OWN PAGE ! It is so cold and rainy today (about 45°F) that it was good she did not get her HOTD, she is stuck in her stall because of the cold winds, rain & temperatures. Mid May it is usually very warm, more like 75-82°F . It can get cool in the summers or very hot & dry. Well, this is the coldest I have experienced it here in our area for close to 12 years! Feels more like Paris weather,LOL! GOOD MORNING, here it is day 16 already. WE LEFT A VOTE FOR YOU, and a big thanks for the wonderful support. Being a pretty new horse owner, I had sort of thought once I get the first year under my belt, I'd be good to go....Silly me, aren't we ALWAYS learning from them. One thing is for sure, if all horses were like STERL MAY, everyone would have a horse. By now she is pretty much the "sweetheart" of the barn. The owners loved her 'cause she was easy to handle, never caused a fuss and I was there regularly(every chance I had). One morning, Sterl was in the aisle cross ties, I was grooming her and Margaret was touring a new prospective boarder, they got to us and Margaret says "this is Sterl May, she is Standardbred, this horse jumps" as they walked past, I heard the guy say "nice butt!!!" Thanks for listening to my stories of Sterl May, I guess by now you can see just how special she is to us. The trail ride was bad, but there were tons of great stuff that happened at "the barn" One morning I had just finished my ride and we jumped a few little jumps. I had turned Sterl loose in the arena to roll. As I waited for her, one of the other boarders came in with a friend. She introduced me and said her friend just came for the visit to watch her ride. I told them I was almost done, I'd be out of the way in a few minutes. I couldn't help notice that the friend was REALLY looking at Sterly, of course I thought because she is sooooo beautiful. As I got ready to leave the arena, I called "come on Sterl May, let's go" the friend says, "what did you call her? Is she a Standardbred?" "she said, I'm K. V. this horse was born on my Dad's farm, OMG, wait till I tell Dad that I saw her, she looks great, do you jump her? he will be so happy to hear that she is alive and well", we both cried a few happy tears, what a small world, what a great horse. After that day, I made sure that I let Mr. V know every year or so that Sterly was indeed alive and well. 776 ZUNI & WILD WILLIAM!
Long day of work from 6 AM to 5 PM. Came home and helped our (still without his vehichle for towing) neighbor unload his horse stables manure,etc. Took only 10 minutes but getting ridiculous. I claim ANKA for mine after all the loans,LOL! A tired vote for you and please vote Anka for her HOTD! Also heard from Thailand and DARLING is doing well on his meds for his perspiration problems and enjoying his ocean rides and hosing down with carrots cut & cleaned to eat! Thanking you all with a vote today. We were really enjoying life together at the barn. I love having the guys home but I have always missed the camaraderie of other riders support. Sterly was now jumping small courses, mostly xrails but also some verticals. We had advanced to the outdoor ring. One evening, late spring I was at the barn and had just started my warm up when a couple of the other riders came in and said "we are going on a trail ride, want to join us" We had not done that yet, so I thought OK, sounds fun.....WRONG...Sterl May thought there was something spooky behind every tree, bush, rock, everything was a monster. She just could not settle, so I could not settle. The other riders are like, she'll be fine come on. So I hang in, we struggle along, Sterl on high alert, snorting all the way. Just then we see ahead of us in the field a dozen or so cows and everyone is like HEE HAW, LETS GET 'EM. I'm like, NO. STERL JUST FREAKED...they all took off, left us there, me scared to death, Sterl just dancing and prancing. So I did what any chicken would do, I got off and we walked back to the barn. I was just fuming, nice friends, don't ever ask me to go on your stupid trail ride again, everyone had a big laugh on us, it was all soon forgotten, but we never went on another trail ride again. I hope all of you moms had a beautiful Mother's Day. I had to work, but didn't mind. Being a mom and loving my sons and they loving me in return is what makes it so special. An emotional week this week. My oldest son, a Msgt in the Air Force, leaves the end of this week for 3 years in Germany. He and his oldest son celebrate their birthdays this week, too. Hi Zuni, here's a vote for ya. Happy Belated Mother's day to you too! Hope that you had a nice one, even if it's only having 4 legged kids, they're the best kind! Didn't do a whole lot today. Ran downtown and did some errands. Did ride Paige though. Worked on pushing that hip over and making her hold it and travel with the shoulders straight, good exercise for the lope offs. Then worked on downward transitions and stopping and then backing on a slack rein. I gave my legs a workout! LOL! Indy got the day off. Very cold, 35 this morning and a high of 52 only, windy too. ♥♡♥ Beautiful weekend! Whiskey and Deacon were awesome as usual! I often wonder if Deacon had an excellent rider with so much more talent to teach-how far could he go. He is so smooth and light in the mouth and he is so willing to try and do anything. I hope I am not holding him back from greatness…We BBQ’ed and just chilled other than my horsey time! I haven't been on HC in like forever!!!!!! The last two weeks have been pretty crazy...ok, really crazy! I have been doing some work for friends and trying to get everything set to move Skye to her new home. About two more weeks, and Skye will be like 5 minutes away...CAN"T WAIT!!!! We got a couple of inches of snow yesterday morning. It is almost gone now, but not very helpful to a growing grass. Sending lots of sunshine and a vote! GOOD MORNING ALL, LEFT YOU A VOTE. Today's story is my personal favorite, here it is. Lessons were going well, we were becoming quite comfortable with one another, she loved her trot poles and her friend Doolie. She was learning to flex and bend but our canter was pretty rough. Sterl would anticipate my asking and she would throw herself into it off her front, not pretty. Our instructor said if we start her on some small jumps it will help her learn to use her hind end. Sterl was already a bit of a "wonder horse" around the barn. Lots of the other riders would chuckle "you can't ride a Standardbred" We practiced our two point, our release on the flat then, when we were ready we planned to jump next lesson. Word spread thru the barn like wildfire "she is going to jump that horse, Standardbred's can't jump" So, here we are next lesson, Val has a couple of TINY xrails set up, Sonya and Doolie were there, I was as nervous as can be. We do our warm up, get sort of relaxed, just then I notice that quite a crowd has gathered at the rail. They are all there to see a Standardbred jump. I trot around the arena, line up, get in two point, get ready for my release,PANIC..I turn my head to the right and CLOSE MY EYES... when I opened them we were on the other side of the jump, STERLY DID IT, Standardbred's can jump. GOOD MORNING, we left you a vote, thanks so much for yours. Happy Mothers Day.
Things were settling into a routine, my work schedule allowed me to be at the barn T,F,S,S, because I worked a 12 hour shift on M,T,W. Our lessons were going well, Sterl was an excellent student, she took easily to things like trot poles (Charlie still HATES trot poles) every time I was with her I was so proud, every one thinks their horse is the best looking. Sterly had only been at the barn a couple of weeks, she was turned out in a small paddock along side the road. When I got to the barn that morning, Max told me someone had come by and wondered if that Mare was for sale. We have a large number of AMISH farmers in our area, at first I was taken back. FANCY'S PERCEPTIONS: Happy Mother's Day!!!
I have an aunt that has her birthday the day after my birthday, this month. My mom & I spent time with her today because she is in the hospital after falling out of bed. She seems to be ok. But I did not have a lot of Fancy time today. I am looking forward to my time with Fancy. Our weather today was cloudy, finally the rains came in.

Hi Zuni, here's a vote for ya. Wise choice to get off before being ejected off by a horse that's been on lay up for 17 months. Silly mares will always find a way to cause a problem! LOL! I looked up Rosie and she don't have a QH show record at all. If anyone I know is looking for a mare to halter or breed, I'll give them her name and have them take if from there. Well, so far the weather man has been wrong! YAY! We got a little rain on and off all day, but not the thunderstorms and heavy rains that they talked about yesterday! Got 2 nice rides in today. Rode Paige first, she was on! Then rode Indy, he was very good and he even loped for me, of course he would have preferred not to have used so much energy! LOL! Then I played with editing two video's that I did of friends showing this past weekend. Cut, splice, and added music and sent them to CD's to give to them. i rode sing bareback last night while waiting for slow poke princeton to finish eating his feed. he and peekaboo are the slooooowest eaters ever! we w/t/c'ed around the covered arena, which is the only dry area after all the thunderstorms. i started peek on alfalfa cubes, the only cubes they had at the feed store. she loves them! have to be careful not to overfeed, of course Come visit me, Sing & Herd.

So, now Sterl May is safely at the boarding barn, life is good. I HAVE MY OWN HORSE, I had to tell you all about Sonya because I never would have made it thru the training and frustration without her. It did not take long to see that Sterly knew NOTHING about being ridden, she had had someone on her back a handful of times, but trained she wasn't. She had no bend, no flexibility, she had no idea what aids were, her head was straight up and out, when she was confused which was often, she paced. That was her comfort zone. But, none of that mattered to me, she was mine, we would learn together. As lucky as I was to have Sonya, Sterly was lucky to have Doolie(Sonya's horse) his stall was across the aisle from her. And of course, when I rode, especially at first Sonya was always there. Sterly had this huge crush on Doolie and once in the arena, she would follow him anywhere. I kept Fool Kat for those times when nothing went right and I just wanted to ride and noT really work SO HARD at it. We started lessons with Sonya's coach, in the beginning it wasn't pretty, but like I said, we were both learning together. Hi ZUNI &Wild Will♡ from ANKA
and the mares and from Darling the TB gelding. I rode Anka on Wednesday for two hours. At just 3 years of age she was a perfect lady, just did not want to cross over the metal drain plate under an arch in our small (but touistic!) town. So we had to back up and go around it. The next one she crossed over without thinking about it,LOL! Dogs, loud motorcycles, people , cows didnot spook her, she was so curious! See all her pics on Angel PF & pals page, she is asking HOTD the 15 May. Today I am loaning my 4X4 to trailer of Anka's pasture pal to go to his horse club where he will stay the night then another rider's dad will trailer him & their horse to go to their show on Sunday. Sadie's a handful. She does need to be worked with a lot. Wish my time wasn't so limited. Looking forward to the day when I can have more time with her. She deserves it.
