My Horse's Favorite Things To Do: Investigate anything she can get into. Follow and bother her horsey family: Pictures of Zuni's family are included in Zuni's collection 1st is **Shaliko Palus-grey reg. Half-Arabian mare 16 yrs old (born at Auburn University-owne- d her since she was 4 months old).
2nd **Arikara- Zuni's half brother is AQHA bay 15 yr old stallion, he was born on our place.

How We Met
We arrived at the pasture to find what we thought was a German Shepherd at the round bale with the old mares. We approached and found it was a baby horse! My brother in laws mare,Chelsea age 22, was exposed for about one afternoon to a stud who had gotten loose. Chelsea and her pasture mate were both fat, but we all thought it was due to the lush pasture. I was given the baby now know as Zuni, for my birthday..

that pager incident does sound painful. i try to plan for falling off just to avoid that sort of thing. i usually put my phone on a fence post near the arena for that reason. hopefully i'll be able to crawl to it in the worst case scenario.
i rode peach, sing and buttercup over the past few days. it's been in the 80's, some clouds and little breezes. nice weather for the sunbelt. i posted a short video of peek so you can see how thin she is. she is improving and i'm sure the vet will want to continue the pergolide since she's gaining weight. now i have to brush her long winter coat off since she's terrified of the clippers. prayers for any affected by the killer tornado in OK. hoping none of our HC friends were near there.Come visit me, Sing & Herd.

Hi Zuni, here's a vote for ya. I was told that it's a forever thing, just a booster if ever needed again! Hope that they are right, I never want to go through that again! Just try to take it easy on yourself while all these shots are being done. It's really stronge stuff they are pumping into you! It was everyone's day off today. I did some errands, and then don't ya know it. It cleared up and the sun came out and so did the high humidity! But at least I got the lawn mowed and the kids got outside time in their pastures. Now I'm waiting on my farrier, Paige needs to be done, Bullseye needs a trim and Indy has to be checked, he might be able to go another week! Love ya, Marion and the blondies. GOOD MORNING, please drop by Charlie's page, I posted a picture of his foot, 2 weeks shy of 10 months, lookin' good...We left votes for everyone too, thank you
You guys are really good, a couple of you asked about her saddle fit, before we even got Dr. Cook involved, we had a saddle fitter take a look, he was satisfied that we had a good fit, on palpation of her spine she showed no tenderness. So here we are at the Hospital, the referral was made and Dr. Cook had sent a history and asked for xrays. I have to say the day was very long, but incredibly interesting, I was warned ahead of time that this is a teaching Hospital,so this would not be a quick in and out visit. Sterl was assigned Dr's in charge of her case and then there were what seemed like a million students at varying levels all hovering around my girl. Every square inch of her was gone over, and a million questions were asked. How nice to spend a whole day talking about your horse and everyone HAS to listen. They told me they would gather all their info and a report would be sent to Dr. Cook. They did absolutely everything except watch me ride her. When they lounged her, she actually moved pretty good, I think it was adrenaline 'cause this was exciting for her too, in the end her assigned Dr's said they saw NO need to xray her spine. Those of you that know me,even a little know that I am non assertive, but, be proud of me, I became like a Mamma bear with her cubs, I said "do you know Dr. Cook? he sent us here for xrays, do you have any idea how hard it was to get here today? we are not leaving without xrays" So, they took our xrays, she needed some sedation because these needed to be very accurate, we waited until the films were ready, they were brought to a large viewing screen and all the Dr's and students that had been with us all day were gathered for the reading. Fancy and I enjoyed a cloudy evening! We were overdue for this show practice and time just hanging out. Fancy did not freet for Trigger one bit, even though Trigger screamed murder every time we got out of his sight. We are expecting rains and clouds all week. But the weekend may be nice. We will try to practice a little each day. It was so much fun! And today was the first day Fancy was ridden since her heel injury. She was great. Like she never missed a beat. I am glad I did not rush her.

I spent most all of Friday at a friend's house horsing around...LOL! We went for a really nice trail ride, and even did a little cantering. So much fun to go riding again!!! Hi Zuni, here's a vote for ya. Congrats on the show. Sure that darn pony is closer to the ground and short strided to begin with. Little stinker! Gald you got through the day! Yes, they won't tell you how horrible those shots are. And warn you that it's only going to get worse. I have a very good friend that'a a nurse and she said, if they told people, they wouldn't get the shots or finish them. Then within a year, it's good bye, you've got rabies and are going to leave this earth. So they just let you think that it's all going to be okay, of course it will, cause you'll never die! The good news, once you get the series of shots, you never have to go through it again. Just a singel booster shot if ever exposed again. Steve got the old washer up and runnin'! But Kevin said that in a few weekends, he'll drag out the other one and set it up outside and run it, this way if it leaks, I don't have a swamped rec-room! Got a super nice ride on Pagie today, used her show bit, haven't had it in her mouth for like two weeks now, she really sets that head and stays in it. Then lunged Indy and did some shwomanship work with him. Then the fun job, de-furing Bullseye, he really needs his body clip, but we haven't had warm enough weather to give him a good bath first. I would ruin two, not one pair of clipper blades doing him! Plus with the nights going down into the 40's and the barn dropping down under 60 degrees, I don't want him to get chilled. GOOD MORNING, LEFT A THANK YOU VOTE, So, let's get right to it. On routine exam all her vitals where good, she, of course appeared healthy, she had regular vacs, wormings and her teeth were good. We drew blood for a complete work up, all neg, with nothing obvious we started the slow process of ruling out, one by one the possibilities. I mean slow because in order to not get confused we needed to give each treatment time to test effects, does that make sense?? Being a Mare, almost 15 and never bred, we wanted to rule out ovary issues first, I was happy and relived when the physical exam and the internal ultrasound was negative, we then went at the simple stuff like corrective shoeing, we tried a course of Regumate and a series of Prostoglandn injection, we tested for neurological issues, we looked at eye issues, double checked teeth and throat, there was no obvious tenderness in her back muscles, however she lounged better than under saddle. Thru all the testing, which took weeks, I still rode her and acted like everything was fine. When Dr. Cook was satisfied that we had ruled out EVERYTHING, he said he needed some very accurate xrays of her spine, he needed us to go to the Equine Hospital in Guelph. He called to make her appointment and I asked Val(our coach) to trailer us up there, and on Jan 15/98 in on of the worst snow storms ever off we went. TO BE CONTINUED. I read you had a shot in your shoulder. I had one a few years ago and I did not go back. Now when my shoulder bothers me, I try my best to back off on the work load. I know about that. I planned on working with Fancy today, but the rains came in. She has shed her winter duds and she is slick and shinny. I guess I will get new photos after she has a bath. Trigger is slick and shinny too.
Mother's day the neighborhood kids came to visit Fancy and Trigger. The children gave them treats and pulled grass. Trigger is still quite aloof. I wonder if anyone ever gave him treats before we got him. He acts like they just rode him hard and put him up wet. Once you catch him, he is so sweet though.

Hi Zuni, here's a vote for ya. Good luck at the show! Hope you bring home some blues! Oh yeah, those deep deltoid muscle arm shots hurt like heck! And the more you get the shots and it gets in your system, the worse you are going to feel! Sorry, just giving you a heads up! Yep, machine went nuts on me back in Jan, then in 3 or 4 days it started to run again. Steve got it up and running today, and when we get a nice weekend and my Kevin is home, we'll dig out dad's machine and see if it's okay and didn't dry rot out on the seals and belts. It was only a year old, dad got it 2008 and he passed in 2009, so it didn't see much use. Well I got my ride in on Paige and a couple of outside things done before the rains came in! And from the looks of the weather reports, right straight thru till next weekend! HUH! But my ride was great on Paige. Then I went to a BBQ for a little while, came home and spread some Magnesium chorlide flakes in the indoor arena to keep the dust down. Haven't put any down in a year now, it needed it. Just used 100 pounds for now on the really dry dusty areas. To wet and crummy out to turn the show kids out! Hot house flowers they are. So gave them lunch of a couple of flakes of hay, they were happy about that! Easy to please! LOL! Love ya, Marion and the blondies. Come visit me, Nuttin But Good. ♥♡♥ Yep, grey skies changed my plans yesterday morning! I did spring cleaning till nearly 12:00! I ate lunch, and then brushed Deacon and Rocket-fly sprayed and turned them out. I got Whiskey next and bathed him! He looked so pretty...after that I was tired, plum pooped!! So I relaxed and watched them graze. GOOD MORNING, LEFT VOTES FOR ALL, TO THANK YOU FOR YOURS. This is where Sterly's story takes a bit of a twist. FF almost 4 years, we are still at the boarding barn, Sonya is now in University, I still ride 4x a week. I started to notice a slight hesitation from Sterl that was new, she did not want to go forward, at first it was mild, and I could push her thru it, but it got worse. She would actually do a small buck and a very tiny rear when I asked for forward. This was so out of character for her, but ever her resistance was polite, like she was trying to get my attention, she did. Believe me when I say there were lots of suggestion from folks that observed us, most thought that it was behavior and that I was not strong enough and I was letting her get away with it, one woman told me I had to beat her hard enough to make a welt on her skin, that would smarten her up!!!. GOOD MORNING MY FRIENDS,I would like to continue with Sterl May's story, thanks for reading them and commenting on them, because she is 30 and retired, it is also fun for me to remember the early years. THANKS FOR THE VOTES AND SUPPORT. All was well at the barn, Sterly's retraining was in full swing, I still leased Fool Kat, so I was a pretty busy girl, 2 horses to ride 4x a week and the barn was 40 minutes from home, a full time job, a house and husband to take care of plus 4 cats and a dog(Nicky) that I did agility with. The young couple that owned Fool Kat were pregnant and building a new house, they had no time for her but, did not want to let her go. So I was a perfect solution for them. Unfortunately, the baby arrived and the house was ready and they were ready to take her home. I had leased her for almost 2 years, I had Sterly but still it was a sad good by. Fool Kat was 23 when I started her lease, I kept in touch after they moved her home, she was basically a pet, she died quietly at 32. Had some Sadie time today. We both need it everyday. It's getting hot here, so I didn't ride. I put the halter on her and walked her off the property. She was a little nervous, so we took it slow, stopping when she needed to to look around and see that she was okay. Neighborhood dogs were barking at us. She walked a little fast on the way back to the house. Had to keep stopping her to slow her down. She loved it. Going to walk her more often to get her use going off the property. Going to work up to riding her. Last time I rode her off the property, she was nervous and wanted to fight me. She should trust me more now. Hugs and a vote. Hi Zuni, here's a vote for ya. AWH GEEZ! Rabies shots are not fun at all! Take it from me. Had to go through them late Aug in 2011. Still paying that hospital bill off! Expensive as heck also. You're maybe going to feel really tired, feverish and won't want to eat! It was three weeks of heck. And the last shot, they went really deep in the deltoid muscle and hit bone, I couldn't move my right arm up in the air for 2 months. I was mad, but I was alive. Sorry you are having to go through this! Had a really good ride on Paige today. Needed it, started the day off with my washing machine taking a dump on me. I think this time it's a gonner! It's almost 35 years old, what'a ya think? Of course it was full of laundry and water, had to try and hand ring things out, bring them upstairs and handwash in the kitchen sink. Not my idea of fun! i rode buttercup. worked on walk/canter transitions. she gave one buck then worked out of it. my little rider fell off into a manure pile when smooch spooked! i felt bad for her because i usually drag the arena since the horses spend most of their day out there. didn't have time though. she was a good sport about it anyway. COME VISIT ANKA’S OWN PAGE ! It is so cold and rainy today (about 45°F) that it was good she did not get her HOTD, she is stuck in her stall because of the cold winds, rain & temperatures. Mid May it is usually very warm, more like 75-82°F . It can get cool in the summers or very hot & dry. Well, this is the coldest I have experienced it here in our area for close to 12 years! Feels more like Paris weather,LOL! GOOD MORNING, here it is day 16 already. WE LEFT A VOTE FOR YOU, and a big thanks for the wonderful support. Being a pretty new horse owner, I had sort of thought once I get the first year under my belt, I'd be good to go....Silly me, aren't we ALWAYS learning from them. One thing is for sure, if all horses were like STERL MAY, everyone would have a horse. By now she is pretty much the "sweetheart" of the barn. The owners loved her 'cause she was easy to handle, never caused a fuss and I was there regularly(every chance I had). One morning, Sterl was in the aisle cross ties, I was grooming her and Margaret was touring a new prospective boarder, they got to us and Margaret says "this is Sterl May, she is Standardbred, this horse jumps" as they walked past, I heard the guy say "nice butt!!!" Thanks. I trust God to keep him and his family safe.....Went out to check on Sadie when I got home from work last night. She'd torn her fly mask off. It lasted 10 days. Hope to someday move away from the egg ranch. The flies are horrible. Temperatures are now in the triple digits, too. Sending love and leaving a vote. Thanks for listening to my stories of Sterl May, I guess by now you can see just how special she is to us. The trail ride was bad, but there were tons of great stuff that happened at "the barn" One morning I had just finished my ride and we jumped a few little jumps. I had turned Sterl loose in the arena to roll. As I waited for her, one of the other boarders came in with a friend. She introduced me and said her friend just came for the visit to watch her ride. I told them I was almost done, I'd be out of the way in a few minutes. I couldn't help notice that the friend was REALLY looking at Sterly, of course I thought because she is sooooo beautiful. As I got ready to leave the arena, I called "come on Sterl May, let's go" the friend says, "what did you call her? Is she a Standardbred?" "she said, I'm K. V. this horse was born on my Dad's farm, OMG, wait till I tell Dad that I saw her, she looks great, do you jump her? he will be so happy to hear that she is alive and well", we both cried a few happy tears, what a small world, what a great horse. After that day, I made sure that I let Mr. V know every year or so that Sterly was indeed alive and well. 776 ZUNI & WILD WILLIAM!
Long day of work from 6 AM to 5 PM. Came home and helped our (still without his vehichle for towing) neighbor unload his horse stables manure,etc. Took only 10 minutes but getting ridiculous. I claim ANKA for mine after all the loans,LOL! A tired vote for you and please vote Anka for her HOTD! Also heard from Thailand and DARLING is doing well on his meds for his perspiration problems and enjoying his ocean rides and hosing down with carrots cut & cleaned to eat! Thanking you all with a vote today. We were really enjoying life together at the barn. I love having the guys home but I have always missed the camaraderie of other riders support. Sterly was now jumping small courses, mostly xrails but also some verticals. We had advanced to the outdoor ring. One evening, late spring I was at the barn and had just started my warm up when a couple of the other riders came in and said "we are going on a trail ride, want to join us" We had not done that yet, so I thought OK, sounds fun.....WRONG...Sterl May thought there was something spooky behind every tree, bush, rock, everything was a monster. She just could not settle, so I could not settle. The other riders are like, she'll be fine come on. So I hang in, we struggle along, Sterl on high alert, snorting all the way. Just then we see ahead of us in the field a dozen or so cows and everyone is like HEE HAW, LETS GET 'EM. I'm like, NO. STERL JUST FREAKED...they all took off, left us there, me scared to death, Sterl just dancing and prancing. So I did what any chicken would do, I got off and we walked back to the barn. I was just fuming, nice friends, don't ever ask me to go on your stupid trail ride again, everyone had a big laugh on us, it was all soon forgotten, but we never went on another trail ride again. I hope all of you moms had a beautiful Mother's Day. I had to work, but didn't mind. Being a mom and loving my sons and they loving me in return is what makes it so special. An emotional week this week. My oldest son, a Msgt in the Air Force, leaves the end of this week for 3 years in Germany. He and his oldest son celebrate their birthdays this week, too. Hi Zuni, here's a vote for ya. Happy Belated Mother's day to you too! Hope that you had a nice one, even if it's only having 4 legged kids, they're the best kind! Didn't do a whole lot today. Ran downtown and did some errands. Did ride Paige though. Worked on pushing that hip over and making her hold it and travel with the shoulders straight, good exercise for the lope offs. Then worked on downward transitions and stopping and then backing on a slack rein. I gave my legs a workout! LOL! Indy got the day off. Very cold, 35 this morning and a high of 52 only, windy too. ♥♡♥ Beautiful weekend! Whiskey and Deacon were awesome as usual! I often wonder if Deacon had an excellent rider with so much more talent to teach-how far could he go. He is so smooth and light in the mouth and he is so willing to try and do anything. I hope I am not holding him back from greatness…We BBQ’ed and just chilled other than my horsey time! I haven't been on HC in like forever!!!!!! The last two weeks have been pretty crazy...ok, really crazy! I have been doing some work for friends and trying to get everything set to move Skye to her new home. About two more weeks, and Skye will be like 5 minutes away...CAN"T WAIT!!!! We got a couple of inches of snow yesterday morning. It is almost gone now, but not very helpful to a growing grass. Sending lots of sunshine and a vote!
