How We Met

We arrived at the pasture to find what we thought was a German Shepherd at the round bale with the old mares. We approached and found it was a baby horse! My brother in laws mare,Chelsea age 22, was exposed for about one afternoon to a stud who had gotten loose. Chelsea and her pasture mate were both fat, but we all thought it was due to the lush pasture. I was given the baby now know as Zuni, for my birthday..

Good morning all, yesterday was sort of a relax and get rested day, boy, I even sound old....Dr. Cook came by, we did vacs and poop samples, we decided to do teeth next month, after the guys are on grass a bit more, because if he HAS to power float Sterly, I want her to have grass, remember how hard it was for her to eat her hay last time, but the good news is he would rather do it manually, he is old school and he feels you have more control manually, yes, it takes longer and it is tougher(on the operator) but in the end a better job. Because she is still quidding, but not as bad, he hopes that a manual float will suffice, me too. Charlie and I had a nice ride yesterday, I'm so lucky, I love that boy. We left a vote, have a great day, Love Donna Lee

I have been riding on the dirt paddock, but it is finally dry enough to head to the grass area, it is softer on his feet and it is a bigger area. Well here we are already, last day of May. I've enjoyed researching Paints and famous horses. Thank you so much for supporting Sierra, win or lose it was fun!

More on Smarty Jones:
As a 2-year-old, during a schooling session at the starting gate at Philadelphia Park in July in preparation for his first career start, Smarty Jones reared up and slammed his head on an unpadded iron bar, fracturing his skull and shattering his orbital (eye socket) bones. Trainer John Servis said at the time, "Oh my God, this horse just killed himself." The accident nearly caused him to lose his left eye. It seems ironic now that two of the other entrants in Saturday's Derby were lacking sight in one eye and Smarty Jones could have been the third.

After months of care at the New Jersey Equine Clinic, he finally made it back to Philadelphia on November 9, winning by 7 3/4 lengths in his debut. In his second start just two weeks later, he romped by 15 lengths. Servis said at the time to Chapman, "This is a nice horse. This horse could go somewhere." Chapman said, "John, only thing I want to go to, a horse like this I want to go to the Derby."

On a rainy May 1, 2004, Smarty Jones became the first unbeaten Kentucky Derby winner since Seattle Slew in 1977. Servis and Elliott became the first trainer/jockey combination in 25 years to win the Kentucky Derby in their debut appearance. Smarty Jones won the race by 2¾ lengths, earning $854,800 for the Chapmans along with a bonus of $5 million from Oaklawn Park for sweeping the Rebel Stakes, the Arkansas Derby, and the Kentucky Derby. He also joined Lil E. Tee (1992 Derby winner) as the only Pennsylvania-bred horses to ever win the Kentucky Derby. Smarty Jones' year, 2004, was the 100th anniversary of the Triple Crown races.

Work is good and I've been able to ride Charlie quite a bit. Because we missed out on all last season, my new goal was to ride every day that was nice enough, even if it means that I don't get other stuff done, like for example making dinner, too bad David, riding comes first this year, and guess what?? he is OK with that, Love that man. Todays story is about a racehorse named Smarty Jones.

Even before the Kentucky Derby, some were saying that Smarty Jones' story was fit for Hollywood. A year after the release of Seabiscuit, it seems appropriate that he would go on to win the Run for the Roses as the 4-1 favorite. Let's take a look at how the horse, his owner, his trainer, and his jockey came together and made history on May 1.

Smarty Jones was bred at Someday Farm near Philadelphia by his owner, Roy Chapman. He was foaled on February 28, 2001. His sire is Elusive Quality who performed best at distances up to a mile, setting a 7 furlong track record at Gulfstream Park and a world record at 1 mile on turf at Belmont Park. His dam, I'll Get Along, was primarily a sprinter and was sired by champion sprinter Smile. Despite these influences, his Dosage Index of 3.40 suggested that he could get the 1 1/4 mile distance of the Derby. He was named after Chapman's mother-in-law whose nickname was Smarty.

Soon after Smarty Jones was foaled, Roy Chapman's trainer Bob Camac and his wife were murdered at their New Jersey farm, causing Chapman to consider getting out of the racing business altogether. He sold all of his racing stock except for two horses, one of which was Smarty Jones. Chapman said, "we had some blood stock agents that were looking at other horses we were getting rid of and they did want to buy Smarty, but he was out in the field with his mama. I, thank God, decided to keep him and not sell him. He just had that look in his eye." Those two horses were sent to Florida to be broken for racing, and then were returned to Philadelphia to the barn of John Servis, a friend of Camac.
More to come tomorrow.

Hope everyone has a great weekend!

I rode Sierra this morning and she did great, probably our best ride yet. We worked on lots of circles and figure eights at a jog and I got her to lope a complete circle. She is doing great!

When Warrior finally passed away at his home stables in 1941 at the incredibly old age of 33, he was fittingly granted an unprecedented obituary in The Times, under the title The Horse the Germans Couldn’t Kill. My grandfather lived on until 1947 but Warrior’s passing affected him greatly. Years later I found a touching entry in his diary on the day that Warrior passed which simply read, “To quote Byron, I do not believe that he can be denied in heaven the soul that he held on earth.”

So I’m proud that my telling of the story has helped that soul to live on. Because, without doubt, Warrior was simply the greatest horse that ever lived.

Hi Zuni, here's a vote for ya. Well today's a wash out! Like rain and cold and windy, feels like fall instead of going into summer. Temp was 65 when I got up and by 2 pm this afternoon, it was down to 52 all ready and going into low 40 tonight! Just when I washed their sheets and put them away, time to get'em out again. No ride today, had the Lung Doctor for my check-up on my asthma. Doing okay! Then hit WalMart and then the grocery store. Kids got a good spa day however, spent over two hours with brushing and grooming all three of them. Bullseye is shedding, but he still needs a body clipping when it gets a little warmer and stays warm. Hopefully repair man will be here Thursday for my generator. Love ya, Marion and the blondes.

Leaving a vote, thanks for yours!

After the war, Warrior returned a hero and was petted by such distinguished guests as Winston Churchill and Queen Mary. But perhaps the sweetest moment came in March 1922 when he won a point-to-point race on the Isle of Wight, four years to the day since he led that famous cavalry charge at Moreuil Wood.

My grandfather and Warrior were inseparable and in 1938 trotted through their home village, their combined ages of 30 and 70 respectively, totalling a century. A virtually unheard-of feat. But to do it on a horse that had carried you through four years on the front line of the bloodiest war in history is almost beyond the imaginings of even Steven Spielberg. And while I greatly enjoyed Steven’s wonderfully evocative version of the fictional tale, War Horse, I have to say there’s no comparison to this truly extraordinary and inspiring real life story.

Finally had the Propane co. out, that's okay, repair man can't get here till thursday sometime. My electrician feels it's something in one of the boards on it. It's not the batters like everyone thought, I charged it over night and even took it to Napa today to have tested! It's okay yet! And don't you know, now they are call for a severe thunder storm tonight with hail! Didn't dare ride, didn't want to take out my fustrations on the horses. So instead I rode the lawn tractor all afternoon! At least I got a lot done, had to burn off that ticked off energy somehow! LOL! Love ya, Marion and the blondes.

The weather has been lovely here lately, I just love spring. The horses are finally almost all shed out and are starting to get shiny. Yesterday I had an early morning ride on Cherokee and then most of the rest of the day I helped my mom do yard work and gardening. In the evening I went to see Sierra and Misty and lunged Sierra. She did really good. She had gotten skinny over the winter but now that she is out on pasture she is filling out again. I cant wait to ride her again soon!

As General of the Canadian Cavalry, my grandfather was no shrinking violet. An undeniably brave man, he was a popular general. But it’s fair to say, not as popular as his horse. Warrior was simply a four-legged inspiration. There was a sense among the men that “if Warrior was OK, we’d be OK.” And my grandfather shared the troops pride in Warrior, because he felt he could never have earned their love and affection were it not for his horse.

This was no ordinary rider-and-horse relationship. They were incredibly close. If the General walked, Warrior would follow behind like a dog. You have to remember this was a horse he had bred and had ridden every day of his life, including some of the most pivotal moments of his existence so they had a bond like no other.

Thanks for your support!

Warrior was brave but not stupid. Fast but not fragile. But above all, he was a survivor. On one occasion the horse beside him was cut in half by a shell. On another, the horse whose nose he was touching was shot through the neck.

Tragically, over eight million horses and mules perished in the war, but time and again the fates conspired to spare Warrior. Three times his stable took a direct hit from a shell and he escaped. He sank in the mud at Passchendaele and was dug out while bullets splattered all around them. At Moreuil Wood, Grandpa and Warrior led a desperate charge across open ground straight into a hail of bullets. Warrior never flinched as he charged into that barrage. Hundreds of horses behind them died, but incredibly Warrior escaped without a scratch.

Leaving a vote, have a great weekend!

More on Warrior:
It was evident from an early age that he had special qualities. My grandfather would take him down to the local beach and let the waves break on him. Most horses would normally shy away, but Warrior stood stock still while the water crashed on him. Instantly he knew this horse had an abundance of courage. And so it proved in the summer of 1914 when Grandpa had no choice but to take him to war.

Weeks later in the first major action of the war, at the Battle of Mons, a cluster of shells fell within yards of them. Any normal thoroughbred would have bolted in terror. But not Warrior. As my grandfather later wrote, “To my amazement, Warrior made no attempt to run away. He simply turned his head and unconcerned, looked at the smoke of the burst.” It’s evident that he never once shirked danger despite Grandpa, at the front, galloping around wearing a red General’s cap, making for a huge and obvious target.

She is slowly - but surely - getting into shape and headed in the right direction. As for Marla, she is generally well-behaved if you show her who's boss. However the canter needs a ton of work. It's almost as if she's forgotten how- any gait above the trot just turns into bucking and rearing. We certainly have a lot of work to do.
Hope all is well & left a vote!

Todays story is about a Thoroughbred horse named Warrior-a real life war horse(as told by Brough Scott.)

The incredible story of Warrior, the real-life War Horse, has long been a legend in our family.
Bred by my grandfather General Jack Seely in 1908, a couple of miles from his home at Yafford on the Isle of Wight, no horse and rider can ever have been through such a sustained series of adventures. They walked off the boat together at Le Havre in 1914 to join the Western Front, and cheated death a thousand times, surviving all four years of the war from Ypres to the Somme, Passchendaele and Cambrai before returning home where they continued to ride on together.
I’ve always thought it rather sweet and poetic that this sturdy bay thoroughbred gelding was christened Warrior because from the peace and tranquillity of the Isle of Wight where he grew up, he remarkably went on to become one of the greatest warriors of all time.

More on Warrior tomorrow...hope you all have a great day!

Hi Zuni!
Beautiful mare!

There's been a lot going on at the barn lately! Yesterday, the barn owner told me to start working with a horse named Marla. Marla is a bit of a brat, especially from getting away with all that she has. Her owner is a little girl in 3rd or 4th grade who doesn't do much with her. Marla has become pushy and somewhat disobedient so I am going to be working with her to correct her behavior. She's been doing mostly walking, and the occasional trot. Today, I took her out and did some ground work. When she realized she couldn't push me she was listening very well. Then I lunged her, and walk/trot was excellent. The canter, however, could not even be called a canter. As soon as she did, she sprang up in bucks and rears... Let's just say she'll be fun when I start riding her next week.
Anyway, Marla and Rosie are in the same pen. As soon as I opened the gate to let Marla in, Rosie pinned her ears at her and got very upset. I finally got Rosie clear of the gate and let Marla in.. And then Rosie chased after Marla. Jealousy problems much Rosie? I put Marla's halter away and got Rosie's and as soon as I walked back into the pen Rosie walked right up to me. I was like "Aww Rose, you just want me all to yourself don't you?" She's such a sweetheart.
Well it has been a fabulous day!
Hope yours was too!
Left a vote & lots of love!

Come visit me, Rosie (& her rescue story)).
