How We Met

I had always wanted a horse and knew that one day I would. I had a whole plan up on how I was going to purchase a horse when I got a job. I had faith that sometime soon I was going to get one. Then one day I went to an auction just to look but guess what? I came home with a beautiful horse! I am so thankful to God for him. I knew that if it wasn't for God, I never would have the chance to meet Charlie Brown!
Psalm 86:15
But you, Lord, are a compassionate and gracious God, slow to anger, abounding in love and faithfulness.
Hebrews 11:1
Faith is being sure of what we hope for and ceratin of what we do not see.

Good Morning,We left a vote. Yes, Greg came out yesterday. Hurray, Charlie was not tender to the hoof tester, as I said I went with my gut and kept the leg wrapped, because I believed it to be tendon or ligament, I saw improvement with the wrap. After paring the hoof he could find no evidence of abscess, and Charlie was comfortable during the trim, there is still a defect at the toe, see photo below, but Greg says this is a tough time of year, the ground is wet with dew in the morning, so it is hard to keep it dry, he did not find any white line disease, and he wants me to use the 17% iodine ONLY once a week because it burns, I'm leaving him wrapped one more day, Dr. Cook wants an update today. Thanks for all the positive thoughts. PS the pie was good. Love Donna Lee

The last few months have been hard ones. I couldn't catch Charlie anymore. I would spend 1 and a half hours just to come up to him and touch him for a few seconds! He was a spoiled, rotten brat!!! Which isn't surprising with him having a first time horse owner:) He had no respect for me and thought he could boss me around. I didn't know what to do. We finally decided to build a small enclosure for him so he couldn't run away as easily. I got him moving around until he submitted to me and then caught him easily. The next day, my sister walked up to him and just put the lead rope easily over his head. Before I couldn't pick out his hooves. Today I spent almost two hours with him. I picked up his hooves and he didn't struggle once! He also stood great for me when I tied him up. Before he would struggle. He isn't perfect but he is still improving. I still have to chase him around the pen but he is getting better with being caught. I lunge him and go out with him almost every day, now that I can catch him. Any opinions with things I could do with him to make him better and know that I am boss? Another thing I should point out is that when I walk up to him he usually kind of leans his body weight away from me and almost starts walking off. What should I do to allow me to walk up to him without him starting to walk away? Thanks

Come visit me, Charlie Brown.

We have certainly been busy. Family trips are fun but the long rides can be exhausting. Funny thing is, if I were going on a horsey related trip, I would be so excited, the exhaustion would feel good. LOL! I think today’s thunder showers helped me to feel rested once again. Fancy and Trigger are doing fine too.

One of our friends has seen how good natured Fancy is on our rides, and he mentioned to me that Fancy’s high strung behavior in the woods last week, could have been because she sensed something in the woods that I was not aware of. Lately we get a lot of creatures coming into the yard from the woods. There are rabbits, ground hogs, foxes, raccoons, etc. Maybe she did sense something. I do know she has never been that high strung on any of our rides. And maybe she just felt a bit hyper. I may never know.

Last week, Cowboy was sitting on Trigger, waiting on Fancy and I, when a butterfly flew by, grazing Cowboy’s cheek with it’s wing. As Cowboy was telling me how soft the butterfly’s wing was, I could hear the amazement in his voice. I told him he had been blessed that day. That was one of the sweetest kid moments ever. Even though I can never tell him that, because he is such a BIG boy now. You know, the pre-teen thing is going on “)

FANCY'S PERCEPTIONS, All I Need to Know in Life I Learned From My Horse: Love those who love you back, especially if they have something good to eat.

LITTLE COWBOY CLASS/Word of the Day: “Bucking: counter-irritant.”

Have a beautiful evening ✞

Hi Charlie Brown
We left a vote, some T-storms rolled thru last night, we missed any of the nasty stuff, but it did cool things down some, thank goodness, as Zuni said, we all seem to be suffering the heat this summer, I can't remember a summer when I have kept the horses in so much, I'd like to be able to leave them out at night, it just isn't safe here, I wouldn't sleep a wink. Have a great weekend, talk soon, Love Donna Lee

Hi Charlie Brown
We left a vote today. I love summer probably more than anyone on earth, but, oh man this is just too much. We are suppose to get a break from this oppressive humidity by Saturday but it is coming back next week. Charlie hates it, he is soaked thru by 9AM, he hates bathes, so lots of cool sponges for him, then in and in front of his fan. Sterly, she just goes with it, she is like yeah, its hot but I'm OK, love that girl, keep cool, love Donna Lee

I WANT TO THANKYOU EVERYONE FOR THE VOTES YOU GIVE ME EVEN THOUGH I AM NOT OFTEN ON! Charlie has improved so much since the last time I've been on!!!!! We built a paddock by the barn. Now I don't have to walk to the back of our 160 or some acres. He isn't herd bound with the neighbor's horses or the cows anymore. He has totally changed. When I come to the barn he sometimes will run to me and just stand there as I pet him. Before he would run away from me unless he was eating or already on the lead. He also used to dislike being stroked on the head, now he loves it. His looks improved too! No longer is he a fuzzy, skinny pony! He's plumper and glossy! He ties up better and picks up his hooves even better than before. I rode him bareback for the first time!!!! So perfect! I've even done some barrels! He coughs now and then because of his heaves but I don't really work him hard so he will be fine. Charlie also does very well with little children and the children love him. I am so proud of my little buddy!

Well, I would suggest spending a lot of time with Charlie, brushing, hand grazing, and maybe even walking him. Maybe bring some treats with you when you go to the pasture so that when he sees you he associates you with something good. Some horses just aren't as friendly as others no matter how much time you spend with them but I'm sure Charlie will improve.

Here is an early morning vote for you, STERL MAY and I appreciate all the wonderful support, thank you.

Dr. Cook went to the University Hospital to go over Sterl's case with her Drs, he then came to us to explain the diagnosis in detail. This type of condition is sometimes seem in very high end dressage horses, because they are held in such tight collection for long periods, enormous stress is placed on the spine, it is sometimes caused from something like a fall eg. a horse flips over in cross ties, or an accident in a trailer, that type of thing, also studies have shown that pacing Standardbreds are more susceptible because of the diagonal motion of the legs during pacing, BINGO, STERL IS PACER BRED. Regardless of how it happened the outcome is the same. Sometimes with rest and time the bones will actually fuse, therefore no more rubbing of bone on bone and so no pain.
The bottom line was Sterl's riding days were over. Dr. Cook suggested that I give her a year off and try her again, in the meantime, she will learn to accommodate herself, she won't do anything that hurts, I now had a pet....see you tomorrow, Love DONNA LEE & STERLY GIRLY

GOOD MORNING ALL, LEFT YOU A VOTE, Thanks for being patient with the story, I don't want to bore you if they are too long. Have you heard the expression "egg on my face"? well, that is exactly how all these Dr's felt as they went over Sterl's xrays, here is the diagnosis "xrays revealed sclerosis, periosteal proliferation, decreased interspinous space and lytic cysts along the 14-18 thoracic vertebrae" to break that down it means that the bones of her spine are rubbing bone on bone and causing her great pain, add a saddle and weight and it it even greater...One of her Dr's said after reading the xrays he could not believe that she let me on her back at all, he said "all I can say is your horse has ONE HELL OF A HEART" I already knew that. In such cases sometimes cortisone is injected into the spaces, so they brought in a Dr. to assess that option, it was determined that there was not enough room to get the needle in, surgery was discussed but not recommended, we were offered an acupuncture treatment and we took it, they said improvement could take up to 2 weeks, if nothing happened it wasn't going to help. It didn't. So after a very long exhausting day, we bundled up my beauty girl and returned to the barn, TO BE CONTINUED, Love DONNA LEE & STERLY GIRLY

GOOD MORNING, please drop by Charlie's page, I posted a picture of his foot, 2 weeks shy of 10 months, lookin' good...We left votes for everyone too, thank you

You guys are really good, a couple of you asked about her saddle fit, before we even got Dr. Cook involved, we had a saddle fitter take a look, he was satisfied that we had a good fit, on palpation of her spine she showed no tenderness. So here we are at the Hospital, the referral was made and Dr. Cook had sent a history and asked for xrays. I have to say the day was very long, but incredibly interesting, I was warned ahead of time that this is a teaching Hospital,so this would not be a quick in and out visit. Sterl was assigned Dr's in charge of her case and then there were what seemed like a million students at varying levels all hovering around my girl. Every square inch of her was gone over, and a million questions were asked. How nice to spend a whole day talking about your horse and everyone HAS to listen. They told me they would gather all their info and a report would be sent to Dr. Cook. They did absolutely everything except watch me ride her. When they lounged her, she actually moved pretty good, I think it was adrenaline 'cause this was exciting for her too, in the end her assigned Dr's said they saw NO need to xray her spine. Those of you that know me,even a little know that I am non assertive, but, be proud of me, I became like a Mamma bear with her cubs, I said "do you know Dr. Cook? he sent us here for xrays, do you have any idea how hard it was to get here today? we are not leaving without xrays" So, they took our xrays, she needed some sedation because these needed to be very accurate, we waited until the films were ready, they were brought to a large viewing screen and all the Dr's and students that had been with us all day were gathered for the reading. TO BE CONTINUED, LOVE DONNA LEE & STERLY GIRLY

Great Picture
GOOD MORNING, LEFT A THANK YOU VOTE, So, let's get right to it. On routine exam all her vitals where good, she, of course appeared healthy, she had regular vacs, wormings and her teeth were good. We drew blood for a complete work up, all neg, with nothing obvious we started the slow process of ruling out, one by one the possibilities. I mean slow because in order to not get confused we needed to give each treatment time to test effects, does that make sense?? Being a Mare, almost 15 and never bred, we wanted to rule out ovary issues first, I was happy and relived when the physical exam and the internal ultrasound was negative, we then went at the simple stuff like corrective shoeing, we tried a course of Regumate and a series of Prostoglandn injection, we tested for neurological issues, we looked at eye issues, double checked teeth and throat, there was no obvious tenderness in her back muscles, however she lounged better than under saddle. Thru all the testing, which took weeks, I still rode her and acted like everything was fine. When Dr. Cook was satisfied that we had ruled out EVERYTHING, he said he needed some very accurate xrays of her spine, he needed us to go to the Equine Hospital in Guelph. He called to make her appointment and I asked Val(our coach) to trailer us up there, and on Jan 15/98 in on of the worst snow storms ever off we went. TO BE CONTINUED. Have a great day, Love Donna Lee & STERLY GIRLY

GOOD MORNING, LEFT VOTES FOR ALL, TO THANK YOU FOR YOURS. This is where Sterly's story takes a bit of a twist. FF almost 4 years, we are still at the boarding barn, Sonya is now in University, I still ride 4x a week. I started to notice a slight hesitation from Sterl that was new, she did not want to go forward, at first it was mild, and I could push her thru it, but it got worse. She would actually do a small buck and a very tiny rear when I asked for forward. This was so out of character for her, but ever her resistance was polite, like she was trying to get my attention, she did. Believe me when I say there were lots of suggestion from folks that observed us, most thought that it was behavior and that I was not strong enough and I was letting her get away with it, one woman told me I had to beat her hard enough to make a welt on her skin, that would smarten her up!!!. I chose to call Dr. Cook, I explained the situation and we made arrangements for him to come and see her, I asked if it could be "just" behavior, he said "whenever a horse that was happy with its work begins to resist, they are trying to tell you something is wrong", in the meantime carry on as normal, act like everything is fine TO BE CONTINUED, Talk soon, love Donna Lee & STERLY GIRLY

GOOD MORNING MY FRIENDS,I would like to continue with Sterl May's story, thanks for reading them and commenting on them, because she is 30 and retired, it is also fun for me to remember the early years. THANKS FOR THE VOTES AND SUPPORT. All was well at the barn, Sterly's retraining was in full swing, I still leased Fool Kat, so I was a pretty busy girl, 2 horses to ride 4x a week and the barn was 40 minutes from home, a full time job, a house and husband to take care of plus 4 cats and a dog(Nicky) that I did agility with. The young couple that owned Fool Kat were pregnant and building a new house, they had no time for her but, did not want to let her go. So I was a perfect solution for them. Unfortunately, the baby arrived and the house was ready and they were ready to take her home. I had leased her for almost 2 years, I had Sterly but still it was a sad good by. Fool Kat was 23 when I started her lease, I kept in touch after they moved her home, she was basically a pet, she died quietly at 32. TALK SOON, LOVE DONNA LEE AND STERLY GIRLY

GOOD MORNING, here it is day 16 already. WE LEFT A VOTE FOR YOU, and a big thanks for the wonderful support. Being a pretty new horse owner, I had sort of thought once I get the first year under my belt, I'd be good to go....Silly me, aren't we ALWAYS learning from them. One thing is for sure, if all horses were like STERL MAY, everyone would have a horse. By now she is pretty much the "sweetheart" of the barn. The owners loved her 'cause she was easy to handle, never caused a fuss and I was there regularly(every chance I had). One morning, Sterl was in the aisle cross ties, I was grooming her and Margaret was touring a new prospective boarder, they got to us and Margaret says "this is Sterl May, she is Standardbred, this horse jumps" as they walked past, I heard the guy say "nice butt!!!" HEY,he was talking about the horse. LOVE DONNA LEE & STERLY GIRLY

Thanks for listening to my stories of Sterl May, I guess by now you can see just how special she is to us. The trail ride was bad, but there were tons of great stuff that happened at "the barn" One morning I had just finished my ride and we jumped a few little jumps. I had turned Sterl loose in the arena to roll. As I waited for her, one of the other boarders came in with a friend. She introduced me and said her friend just came for the visit to watch her ride. I told them I was almost done, I'd be out of the way in a few minutes. I couldn't help notice that the friend was REALLY looking at Sterly, of course I thought because she is sooooo beautiful. As I got ready to leave the arena, I called "come on Sterl May, let's go" the friend says, "what did you call her? Is she a Standardbred?" "she said, I'm K. V. this horse was born on my Dad's farm, OMG, wait till I tell Dad that I saw her, she looks great, do you jump her? he will be so happy to hear that she is alive and well", we both cried a few happy tears, what a small world, what a great horse. After that day, I made sure that I let Mr. V know every year or so that Sterly was indeed alive and well. WE LEFT YOU A VOTE TODAY, THANKS FOR YOURS, talk soon, Love Donna Lee & Sterly Girly

It is hot and humid today, supposed to get up to 90! Yesterday I helped my aunt put the wire up for Sierra and Misty's other pasture. Last year the beef calves got out and tore it all down so we locked Sierra and Misty off of it. Today we got the electric hooked up and let them out in it. The pasture they were in before is nibbled down to the dirt so they are very happy to have a new pasture to graze in. Voted:)

Thanking you all with a vote today. We were really enjoying life together at the barn. I love having the guys home but I have always missed the camaraderie of other riders support. Sterly was now jumping small courses, mostly xrails but also some verticals. We had advanced to the outdoor ring. One evening, late spring I was at the barn and had just started my warm up when a couple of the other riders came in and said "we are going on a trail ride, want to join us" We had not done that yet, so I thought OK, sounds fun.....WRONG...Sterl May thought there was something spooky behind every tree, bush, rock, everything was a monster. She just could not settle, so I could not settle. The other riders are like, she'll be fine come on. So I hang in, we struggle along, Sterl on high alert, snorting all the way. Just then we see ahead of us in the field a dozen or so cows and everyone is like HEE HAW, LETS GET 'EM. I'm like, NO. STERL JUST FREAKED...they all took off, left us there, me scared to death, Sterl just dancing and prancing. So I did what any chicken would do, I got off and we walked back to the barn. I was just fuming, nice friends, don't ever ask me to go on your stupid trail ride again, everyone had a big laugh on us, it was all soon forgotten, but we never went on another trail ride again. Hope everything went well w/the farrier/deworming!
Ethan and I are having a blast being home alone, we go to bed late, get up late and of course, eat lots of junk food. My family gets home from the wedding tomorrow sometime.
All the snow has finally melted but it has been rainy and windy the last few days. Yesterday I lunged Sierra with her saddle on and did some ground driving with her also. Ethan wanted to ride Dakota bareback for a while but he was having trouble mounting him. He kept on either ramming into him with his shoulder and nipping at him or else turning his butt around so Ethan couldn't get on. Ethan has been the only one to ride Dakota ever since I got Cherokee and turns out he has been learning some bad habits. I tried to mount him bareback and he laid back his ears and bit me. Then when I tried again he reared. Dakota has never laid back his ears or tried to bite me before and he never rears either. I decided to work with him for a while before letting Ethan ride him. I got him on the lunge line and every time he tried to ram into me or bite I made him work on the lunge line. He caught on fast and soon he stood nice and still for me to mount. I trotted and loped him bareback for a while and then let Ethan ride. Then I rode Cherokee bareback for the first time, he was perfect. Planning on working some more with Dakota, Ethan lets him get by with wayyy to much. Have a wonderful Sunday♥

Misty is pretty well trained so I mostly just ride her for fun now and not for training. When my aunt first got her she bucked, she was agressive and she hated riding. After she had Sierra she got very protective and she would charge at anyone who came into the pasture with her ears layed back. Now it is very rare that she bucks and she never lays back her ears or tries to bite.

“The great Easter truth is not that we are to live newly after death – that is not the great thing – but that...we are to, and may, live nobly now because we are to live forever.” (Phillips Brooks)

HI!!! Here is a Happy Easter vote for you!
I am so happy to be able to blog and vote! Saturday I got my job list caught up and the brace is helping with the swelling, pain, & numbness. I have missed interacting with you all. I will blog and vote often as I can depending on my physical situation.

Saturday afternoon we went to the farm to take pics of my brothers and their friend as they rode out. I rode Buttercup in the field, well, my brother lead me on her. When he got her she did not like anyone. Now, she knows who he is and she only wants to listen to him! I could not ride her without him leading her. I did not want to get into a tussle with her either because my wrist are weak. I did enjoy the short ride in the field though!!!

Fancy's wound continues to improve. I was afraid to let her get her kicks out, but I let her out for a while Friday. She ran! Bucked, kicked, & ran more! There was NO limping, no swelling, no bleeding. I did put some bell boots on her before I let her out. Does any one know if it is ok to allow her to wear bell boots all day or night? I took them off when I put her back in the stall. The bell boots covers that wound so I think they will help if I leave her out. I don't know anything about bell boots because I have never used them.

If you saw our last video, don't worry, Fancy was not in any danger. Fancy has been goin up them stairs since she was 10 months old. When we go there more often she walks up them better than I do. They are in the park and there is grass on both sides. I never let her walk down. I think the pool noodle getting under her leg made her feel funny because the first time she was unsure. After I
placed that noodle back at her side she was ok.
