How We Met
I decided to trade one mode of transportation for another after a deer totaled my car (yes his pasture mate is a more recent addition because of a deer as well). Chance came to me after countless hours of research searching for the perfect beginners horse. He made the long haul from Kentucky and was welcomed by snow and me of course - neither of which he was too fond of. It took A LOT of work on my part to learn to speak his language but he is full of lessons and teaches me something new everyday. He is an absolute joy and always makes me laugh when I'm having a bad day!.

Voted. I read my blogs, looks like most of us are really enjoying our equine pals this spring! Great blogs! And now we have a whole new weekend to enjoy more adventures, have fun :)
Trigger had a bath Wednesday evening, then he spent the night stalled. Trigger had his vet visit today. He loaded up nicely the first time, but he backed out before I got the butt bar up. The second time he stayed in there. Fancy ran around screaming bloody murder. I like to take them places without the other one so they can know that it is ok to be separated. They do not agree with that. LOL. When we returned, Fancy was filthy with sweat and dirt, from all of her running and screaming. When I turned Trigger loose, Fancy scolded him roughly for leaving her. After that, Fancy was nice to Trigger. I cannot believe how silly Fancy can be.
We really had a bad storm this evening. I was filling Fancy’s water tub when the storm began. The wind was exceptionally high and Fancy was playing in the water. I just put a tarp over Bandit’s (my Siberian Husky) kennel on his birthday, May 31, Well, the wind lifted that kennel and tossed it sideways into our chain link fence on that side of our yard. Bandit was a bit terrified, he ran into his dog house and stayed there until Cowboy and I got his kennel back in place. Then I took that tarp off. The wind did blow harder, and I was thankful the kennel stayed on the ground for the remainder of the storm. As we worked on the kennel, Fancy ran crazy then went to eat hay. I guess all the running wild and crazy did work up an appetite. Trigger did not seem to really care that the wind was up. He did join Fancy munching hay in the rain though.
It was amazing to see huge trees swaying wildly, almost touching the ground. It was beautiful and frightful at the same time. I hardly ever see this because I am usually in the house when the storms come up. I was glad when the storm was over and things were peaceful again.

We left a vote today, looks like another rain day coming up, I am off to physio this morning, I'm still not able to drive, so that is just one more thing that David has to do, I have to say, I like being driven around. There really is very little I can do with one arm, but, I can still let the guys out in the morning. I can slide the barn door open with one hand as long as it isn't windy, and because both of these guys drop their heads, I can get halters on, I can even carry hay, one flake at a time, it isn't much, bur I look forward to it. Tomorrow it will be 8 weeks since my shoulder surgery. I wish I could say I was all better, however, physio is tough, I'm not a baby, bur this really hurts. On the positive side, I'm getting a great tan or as David says "probably melanoma" and I've read several books and here is the best one, because I did not want to sedate Sterl May to clip her, I have, with one hand and a razor comb, clipped her, she looks great, how many people do you know that are that dedicated to their horse???!!! HERE IS THE FINAL EPISODE, THANKS TO EVERYONE THAT SUPPORTED US ALONE THE WAY. WE LEFT YOU VOTES AS WELL.
With Jackie and Sterl settled in their new home and David and I in our new house, things were great, except Jackie's health was failing and his quality of life was sometimes quite poor. I convinced myself that I should really look for another horse because if something was to happen to Jackie, Sterl May would be alone. Plus I would like to ride again. After an EXTENSIVE search(please read ROYAL MES "HOW WE MET") I found Charlie. What can I say about Charlie, he is simply the best. Charlie arrived Oct.8,2008, Thanksgiving Sunday. Jackie passed quietly with David, Sterly and me by his side on June 9, 2010. She loved her little buddy, she watched and called for him for several days. Dr. Cook told me to let her be, they mourn the same as we do. We had him cremated and he is buried in the pasture where Sterl can be close everyday. This is her last move, it is my last move until they cart me of to the "old folks home" Everyday is an adventure, what I have tried to say this last month, is that thru all of it, STERLY GIRLY has always been there. FANCY'S PERCEPTIONS: All I Need to Know in Life I Learned From My Horse: When in doubt, run far, far away.
Fancy was a very good girl at her vet check up this morning. I remembered at the last minute to get the vaccine in her hip instead of neck. She seemed to tolerate it better that way the last time. The vet measured her height for me. Fancy is 15 HH!!! I could tell she grew, but every time I measured her, I always get 14. ???. I knew I was not getting a correct reading when I measured her.

Just when I was sure things could not get any worse, guess again. Not only was I looking for a new place for Sterl & Jackie to live, understand that boarding 2 horses that are not ride-able was out of the question. Jackie was also having some health issues, he had COPD and Cushing's disease, plus due to an old case of laminitis he wore special shoes, all of this cost $$$. You know that expression, "BEING AT THE RIGHT PLACE AT THE RIGHT TIME" Well, I could almost not believe my luck, I heard from a neighbor that a place just down the road was going to be available, to make a long story short, when I looked at it, it was perfect, it needed fencing and the barn needed some reno, but nothing like what I had been thru, the only catch was if we rented the barn and pasture, they really wanted us to take the house as well. I would actually be where my horses were, I could see them all day, it would be amazing. I believe in life it isn't where you go, it's how you get there....we were home. Here comes another rainy day vote, THANKS SO MUCH FOR THE SUPPORT, WE LOVE IT.
I just bet you are all thinking that finally everything is going my way and we all live happily every after.....not so fast. Mackie was without a doubt, a truly wonderful horse(please take a moment and read his"how we met"on his profile. He is ANGEL SASSY MAC. I think it best describes him to say that he was like a sick child, he was constantly struggling with something and of course, we worked thru it all. When we had been in the barn almost 9 years and Mackie was 11, EVERYTHING started to go downhill fast. The barn owners had a change of heart about retirement and decided to sell the property. There I was with 3 horses and looking for a new home again. I thought of tons of possibilities, some you don't want to hear. The farm sold in 3 days, however, the new owner gave me until spring to move, that gave us almost 10 months to find a new home. In the meantime, MACKIE'S health deteriorated and on AUG 8/2007 at the University of Guelph EQUINE HOSPITAL, with me by his side until the end, he was euthanized due to heart failure. He was only 12. I can tell you, I miss him every day. So, it was just me Jackie and Sterl May again. TO BE CONTINUED. RAINY DAY VOTES FOR ALL, My search began again, Sonya and I had 3 horses lined up to look at, none were close to home so we made a day of it. The first 2 were not even possibilities, I was tired, it was getting on in the day and I wanted to just go home, Sonya convinced me we had come this far, let's just go look. The directions were bad, we got lost, when we finally got there I was in a bit of a cranky mood. Everything changed when we were introduced to Sassy Mac. He was so handsome (but I had learned that is no reason to pick a horse)His manners were excellent, I actually wondered for a minute if he was drugged, he wasn't, we spent several hours with him, hearing his history, his training, the personal medical reason the owner had to let him go. He was 8, 16hh and oh so sweet. I rode him, we video taped him, we came home to think it over. Mackie arrived the next week, Jackie and Sterly had a new friend and I had a horse to ride. Life was good again. ANOTHER LOVELY DAY COMING OUR WAY, WE LEFT BIG THANK YOU VOTES.
Once I got hurt, there really was no way for me to shake off the fear, and once BRAY was on to my fear, we were going nowhere together, I decided that although I really LOVED that horse, I didn't LIKE him very much. I sold him to a young woman at a large show barn, she had far more riding experience than me, plus she had a large support group around her. I was happy for BRAY, I really thought he would do well in that environment. He was such a handsome guy(his picture is a the bottom of the page)So, off he went to his new adventure. Now, here I was back a square one again, just me, Sterly and Jackie, there had to be a horse out there for me....Three weeks after I sold BRAY, I got a call from his new owner, he had an accident in his paddock, when he came in that night, he walked on 3 legs, refusing to put right hind on the ground. She got two veterinary opinions, both agreed after xray and ultrasound that the stifle muscle was torn, prognosis was hopeless. She chose to euthanize. She asked if I'd like to come and say good bye, because he had actually been my horse more than hers. It wasn't suppose to be like this, I had already said good bye once. LEAVING A SUNNY SUNDAY VOTE. THANKS FOR THE SUPPORT.
The barn was done, safe and Sterl had her little companion, it was close to home,it was on my way to work, so I could stop at 4:30 in the morning and, for example if I thought I had left lights on, I could pop back over before bed to check. This next chapter is not one I'm very proud of. When Jackie and Sterl were settled in, I started looking for a horse to ride. I found Brazen Virtue, we called him Bray. I went against Dr. Cook's advise and bought him as a 3 year old, to be fair he was a peach at 3, but by the time he turned 5, he was an idiot. Bray was trotter bred Standardbred, he was a bit over 17hh, and he was gorgeous. Wrong reason to buy a horse....live and learn. When I started to have trouble with him, I did what I thought was right, I got help. I had 3 horses now and had them at home, I didn't have a lot of extra cash. I sent Bray off to training school, that helped some, but once back home he started to fall back into his bad habits. This sweet at 3 horse, turned into a 5 year old that tried "to kill" me, I rode him and was just glad every time I got off in one piece, I found I was making excuses not to ride, things like, it's too windy or too wet or I'm tired or he's too fresh. I finally admitted, that I was afraid of him. The last straw came early one cool spring morning, I was feeding, put out hay, Bray was fresh, I was between Bray and Jackie, out of the corner of my eye I saw the foot come up, I remember saying, "don't you dare" that was the last thing I remember, when I came too, I could not find my glasses, I don't think I knew what had happened, I managed to get to the phone and called David to come help me find my glasses. We went to the hospital, his kick caught me on the forehead, 17 stitches and a serious concussion. It was over for me and Bray. When I look back at what I know now, when I look at pictures from that time(today's profile shot, and one more at the bottom) in almost all the pics, Sterly was between Bray and Jackie, she never trusted him. GOOD MORNING ALL, we left votes on this sunny Saturday morning.
Clean up got under way, basically this property had been left about 15 years ago, the barn closed up the fences left to fall down, the house had been rented over the years and as you can see from the pics, the barn was used as a garbage dump. We had to literally hack the overgrowth away with machetes in order to get inside, we carted away at least half a dozen trailer loads of "junk". It took a good couple of months to get it ready to be a safe comfortable home for Sterl May, but thru all the work I stayed focused on my goal. Once she was settled and happy I would look for a horse to ride. The only issue was Sterl had never been alone and I worried about her stressing by herself, that is where "Jackie" entered the picture (today's profile shot) Our coach, Val had a few boarders, one owed back board, they had a horse and little Jackie, they came in the middle of the night and took the horse but left Jackie, Val gave him to Sterl May for company. Jackie was about 7 when we got him, part mini, part Shetland pony, about 9hh, but don't worry, he didn't know he was little. He became Sterl's "little side kick". Life was good. GOOD MORNING, We left you all a vote. Now that I had an answer although, not the answer I wanted, I have to admit that I did fall apart, there were lots of tears. Reaction varied at the barn, most were understanding and sympathetic but remember the lady that said I needed to "hit her harder", well she said "I don't know what you're crying about, you just sell her and get something else, it's not like you raised from a baby" I have never believed that animals were disposable, and I promised Sterl a home until the day she died. But, reality set in David said that I could not continue to pay board to go 4x a week to simply pat her, there was the wear and tear on the vehicle and the gas for all the travelling back and forth, for what, I can't ride her. I needed to THINK. bringing her home was not an option, we had no land or barn. I didn't know what to do, YET, but I knew I WAS NOT GETTING RID OF HER. Here is an early morning vote for you, STERL MAY and I appreciate all the wonderful support, thank you.
Dr. Cook went to the University Hospital to go over Sterl's case with her Drs, he then came to us to explain the diagnosis in detail. This type of condition is sometimes seem in very high end dressage horses, because they are held in such tight collection for long periods, enormous stress is placed on the spine, it is sometimes caused from something like a fall eg. a horse flips over in cross ties, or an accident in a trailer, that type of thing, also studies have shown that pacing Standardbreds are more susceptible because of the diagonal motion of the legs during pacing, BINGO, STERL IS PACER BRED. Regardless of how it happened the outcome is the same. Sometimes with rest and time the bones will actually fuse, therefore no more rubbing of bone on bone and so no pain.
The bottom line was Sterl's riding days were over. GOOD MORNING ALL, LEFT YOU A VOTE, Thanks for being patient with the story, I don't want to bore you if they are too long. Have you heard the expression "egg on my face"? well, that is exactly how all these Dr's felt as they went over Sterl's xrays, here is the diagnosis "xrays revealed sclerosis,periosteal proliferation,decreased interspinous space and lytic cysts along the 14-18 thoracic vertebrae" to break that down it means that the bones of her spine are rubbing bone on bone and causing her great pain, add a saddle and weight and it it even greater...One of her Dr's said after reading the xrays he could not believe that she let me on her back at all, he said "all I can say is your horse has ONE HELL OF A HEART" I already knew that. In such cases sometimes cortisone is injected into the spaces, so they brought in a Dr. to assess that option, it was determined that there was not enough room to get the needle in, surgery was discussed but not recommended, we were offered an acupuncture treatment and we took it, they said improvement could take up to 2 weeks, if nothing happened it wasn't going to help. It didn't. You guys are really good, a couple of you asked about her saddle fit, before we even got Dr. Cook involved, we had a saddle fitter take a look, he was satisfied that we had a good fit, on palpation of her spine she showed no tenderness. So here we are at the Hospital, the referral was made and Dr. Cook had sent a history and asked for xrays. I have to say the day was very long, but incredibly interesting, I was warned ahead of time that this is a teaching Hospital,so this would not be a quick in and out visit. Sterl was assigned Dr's in charge of her case and then there were what seemed like a million students at varying levels all hovering around my girl. Every square inch of her was gone over, and a million questions were asked. How nice to spend a whole day talking about your horse and everyone HAS to listen. They told me they would gather all their info and a report would be sent to Dr. Cook. They did absolutely everything except watch me ride her. When they lounged her, she actually moved pretty good, I think it was adrenaline 'cause this was exciting for her too, in the end her assigned Dr's said they saw NO need to xray her spine. Those of you that know me,even a little know that I am non assertive, but, be proud of me, I became like a Mamma bear with her cubs, I said "do you know Dr. Cook? he sent us here for xrays, do you have any idea how hard it was to get here today? we are not leaving without xrays" So, they took our xrays, she needed some sedation because these needed to be very accurate, we waited until the films were ready, they were brought to a large viewing screen and all the Dr's and students that had been with us all day were gathered for the reading. GOOD MORNING, LEFT A THANK YOU VOTE, So, let's get right to it. On routine exam all her vitals where good, she, of course appeared healthy, she had regular vacs, wormings and her teeth were good. We drew blood for a complete work up, all neg, with nothing obvious we started the slow process of ruling out, one by one the possibilities. I mean slow because in order to not get confused we needed to give each treatment time to test effects, does that make sense?? Being a Mare, almost 15 and never bred, we wanted to rule out ovary issues first, I was happy and relived when the physical exam and the internal ultrasound was negative, we then went at the simple stuff like corrective shoeing, we tried a course of Regumate and a series of Prostoglandn injection, we tested for neurological issues, we looked at eye issues, double checked teeth and throat, there was no obvious tenderness in her back muscles, however she lounged better than under saddle. Thru all the testing, which took weeks, I still rode her and acted like everything was fine. When Dr. Cook was satisfied that we had ruled out EVERYTHING, he said he needed some very accurate xrays of her spine, he needed us to go to the Equine Hospital in Guelph. He called to make her appointment and I asked Val(our coach) to trailer us up there, and on Jan 15/98 in one of the worst snow storms ever off we went. TO BE CONTINUED. GOOD MORNING, LEFT VOTES FOR ALL, TO THANK YOU FOR YOURS. This is where Sterly's story takes a bit of a twist. FF almost 4 years, we are still at the boarding barn, Sonya is now in University, I still ride 4x a week. I started to notice a slight hesitation from Sterl that was new, she did not want to go forward, at first it was mild, and I could push her thru it, but it got worse. She would actually do a small buck and a very tiny rear when I asked for forward. This was so out of character for her, but ever her resistance was polite, like she was trying to get my attention, she did. Believe me when I say there were lots of suggestion from folks that observed us, most thought that it was behavior and that I was not strong enough and I was letting her get away with it, one woman told me I had to beat her hard enough to make a welt on her skin, that would smarten her up!!!. I chose to call Dr. Cook, I explained the situation and we made arrangements for him to come and see her, I asked if it could be "just" behavior, he said "whenever a horse that was happy with its work begins to resist, they are trying to tell you something is wrong", in the meantime carry on as normal, act like everything is fine TO BE CONTINUED, Talk soon, love Donna Lee & STERLY GIRLYCome visit me, Sterl May````PROUD TO BE HOTM````, Angel Sassy Mac & Friends & Royal Mes.

GOOD MORNING MY FRIENDS,I would like to continue with Sterl May's story, thanks for reading them and commenting on them, because she is 30 and retired, it is also fun for me to remember the early years. THANKS FOR THE VOTES AND SUPPORT. All was well at the barn, Sterly's retraining was in full swing, I still leased Fool Kat, so I was a pretty busy girl, 2 horses to ride 4x a week and the barn was 40 minutes from home, a full time job, a house and husband to take care of plus 4 cats and a dog(Nicky) that I did agility with. The young couple that owned Fool Kat were pregnant and building a new house, they had no time for her but, did not want to let her go. So I was a perfect solution for them. Unfortunately, the baby arrived and the house was ready and they were ready to take her home. I had leased her for almost 2 years, I had Sterly but still it was a sad good by. Fool Kat was 23 when I started her lease, I kept in touch after they moved her home, she was basically a pet, she died quietly at 32. HELLO! So my mom, Lena, has decided she want to run for HOTM, but, in order to do that she's going to need at least 600 votes! Now I think she misplaced them somewhere and I don't think we are smart enough to know where she put them. Before I bought Sterl May(read her how we met story please),I used to lease a solid bred paint mare, at a local boarding stable not far from home. Her name was Fool Kat, I leased because as an adult getting back into riding, I wanted to be sure before I bought my own horse. The barn owners thought that I should buy a foal and raise it up. One of the other riders at the barn heard this and she said she knew of someone that had a horse for sale for not too much $$$ she mostly wanted a good home for this horse. The only thing was, she was a STANDARDBRED, that didn't mean anything to me. I went to meet her, and I will never forget the feeling I had when I walked into her paddock, she tuRned to look at me, THOSE EYES, THOSE BEAUTIFUL EYES, she still has those beautiful eyes, thanks for your support, we left a vote too.
